How do you finish the inside (inner diameter ). of the rings?

Yea this is what I am struggling with the most. That and the ring sticking to the bushings

How the hell do you not get the ring superglued to the mandrill

    • @Kuesa

The bushings are made of Delrin, which doesnt stick to CA glue

  • @creaturefpv

And its taking my super glue like an hour before i can touch it too. Idk what thats about. And when i use the acceleration spray it messes up the glue where it will shrivel up and get bumpy or if i use the thicker glue it gets bubbles.

Excellent video except for one thing. I was surprised by how many coats of CA glue you used. Ive never seen one use more than 4 coats. But, that a good way to separate yourself from others. One takeaway: You may want to turn off auto focus on your camera.

That is a pen mandrel with a couple different bushings on them. the black one's don't stick to the glue.

What temperature is where u live? Reason I ask is coz does your CA finish ever go white? I live in Ireland and after about the 3rd layer it goes a little cloudy on me 😔 I live in Ireland, any good tips for me to try or have u ever had the same problem

    • @XxTRIPPZYxX
      @XxTRIPPZYxX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Activator can make it cloudy if you are using that. Just let the glue dry on it's own. That's the only thing I can really think of

Hector Otero Jr yeah I started out Makin wood rings with out a lathe, get yourself a drill an a rotary tool like a dremel n that's pretty much all u need as a basic starter pack.. U can do them by hand with a hand saw or a jewelers saw either but u do need a drill to get the whole in the center.. There's also a way of Makin "bent wood rings" with vaneer wood.. If u check out some video on here about Makin bentwood rings you'll find lots of vids on how to do it. That's how I started an learned man., hope this was some help to give you some ideas.! If u are clever enough am good with your hands you can make a small lathe yourself from a DC motor from a drill, or even an old drill.. This is what I did at the start too 😉 there's video on how to make those too haha that's the best thing about TH-cam, lots of "how to" videos for those who like to learn things ✌

I like what the guy is doing with first thin CA then thicker CA. But one thing I really don't care for is people that post a good vid but don't list everything they use, where they get them and the full technique. I just started doing rings and experimentation is the name of the game. I am getting a pattern dialed in.
I saw a bunch of walnut/maple/padauk/bloodwood etc. to 1 1/2 in and re-saw them to 1/8 and 3/16+ then cut them 1 1/2 in squares and smooth the faces on a stationary belt sander. Then pick contrasting colors and glue them up with the grains opposing to give them strength. I was using CA that the "expert" at Rockler told me was as good if not better than wood glue but I've see a few problems with a few that I have been turning so I am probably going back to tightbond.
Next I drill a 5/8, 11/16 or 3/4 in hole in the center and use one of those expanding ring mandrels (I have two sizes, 6-9 and 10-13 at $30 apiece. You can get them in half sizes too but that's what we have sandpaper for) from the bangle guy to rough them to outside diameter then put them in my chuck to turn the inside diameter close and use a 1/2 copper pipe wrapped with 180 grit in the drill press to smooth and dial in the final size.* Then back in the chuck for a couple of coats of CA. Back on the mandrel (usually wrapped with painters tape to snug it and protect it from CA getting on it which can be a bit of a mess to clean up) and turn it to remove the marks from the chuck and to final outside diameter then hit it with the CA.
But another thing I have been trying when I'm not pressed for time is soaking them over night in a small, seal-able container with Mahoney's walnut oil. After drying for a few days (hung up in my furnace room) hit them with the buffing wheel. The ones I have done so far seem to have come out pretty nice and I don't have to contend with my gloves getting ripped apart and fingers super glued. I may pickup a jar of that Zinsser Bulls Eye® SealCoat and try that. Sounds like it is fast and pretty durable.
*I do have one of those Irwin drill press adjustable wood bits that will go from 5/8 to 1 1/2 inches so I can really hit off sizes (trying to eyeball them isn't easy or accurate) but I want to replace the holding screw with a hex or allen head, I can tell trying to tighten with a flat blade screw driver isn't going to be a long-term solution because you really have to reef on it to keep the blade in place however it is a goofy screw, it will fit in a metric or standard but neither hex or allen metric or standard will fit in the bit so I am going to talk to a machinist I know to see what he thinks. It may be a proprietary thread.

Orienting the wood grain perpendicular as you describe does make the rings alot stronger but over time as the wood expands and contracts it will make the surface of the ring uneven. If you want a stronger ring I would look into titanium ring cores or even stainless steel

      Hello @bolognapogna
      Thank you for asking.
The application works with the 500 rpm as well as log as you ensure the entire surface of the ring has an even application. 🙂
