  • In this ring making video we are making Bello opal bentwood rings from walnut burl veneer and crushed purple Bello opal on our wood lathe. Follow along on this step by step tutorial, and learn how these beautiful rings are created so that you can DIY!
    This is really old footage that I finally got around to editing. Just trying to get some practice with the new editing equipment. I find it really interesting seeing all the things I do differently now. If you are interested in having a custom ring made, feel free to send me an email - SharpKnifeNuts@gmail.com

      I ordered a super small, inexpensive lathe that I bought primarily for making beads, but may very well be capable of producing rings on a small scale as well. I'll do a little review on it and throw it up on the channel. Might be a good starting point for anyone that wants to get into ring making. Stay tuned!

    • @ApollosRings
      @ApollosRings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I start with 250 grit sandpaper, then work up in 150 grit increments all the way up to 2000 grit, then I use Micro-Mesh and work through all those grits, then finally I use an automotive polish to finish it off. It's a tedious process, but it comes out beautifully once you're finished.

    Just a suggestion:
    it's better to use a thinner wire around 0.2-0.3mm and the wire should be under tension to hold the ring properly.

    • @ApollosRings
      @ApollosRings  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, really appreciate that! I guess it could be hard to tell from this vid, but it's just the stock live center that shipped with my lathe, it just has an outer ring that makes it look like the dowel is in it. This is a really old video though. Since this I've upgraded to a much better thread on ring mandrel. If you're looking for one, let me know. I can point you in the right direction.

      If you plan on turning more than a few rings, it's definitely worth spending a few bucks. I used the dowel for a while, but learned pretty fast it was more trouble than it was worth. The first time a ring got glued to the thing and all that time was wasted made me want to chuck it across the room, lol.

    What gauge wire do you use?

    • @ApollosRings
      @ApollosRings  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a few different gauges, but I believe that is 28 gauge in that particular ring. That is the gauge I use most frequently.

  • @imagineengine
    @imagineengine 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What is the resin/hardner that you use to hold your crushed stone in the inlay with. So many different kinds to choose from?

    • @ApollosRings
      @ApollosRings  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a link to the exact CA glue I use in the video description. The thin is great for penetrating, but I use a medium, and sometimes even thick viscosity for setting stones and opal.

    • @imagineengine
      @imagineengine 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ApollosRings Oh ok. I geuss I got confused. Not difficult for me....lol, I thought I seen you using some blue looking epoxy stuff on top of your titanium wire right before setting the stones. I thought that must be epoxy or resin used for bonding the stones.And speaking of stones, do you crush your own or buy pre-crushed. I seen some on the website you spoke of that appear to be already crushed. By the way I ordered the thin and medium CA glue in your links, just havent used yet. Thanks

    • @ApollosRings
      @ApollosRings  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use CA for damn near everything. It's really versatile stuff. I do recommend the Bob Smith Insta-Set to go along with it though. It's a spray that instantly cures the CA. Definitely useful in a lot of situations. The blue stuff you saw was probably paint. I'll match the paint to the opal color, then paint over the titanium wire so that if there's ever a thin spot of opal in the inlay, the wire won't show through.
      Now as far as stones go, now I crush my own. I used to buy it crushed before, but I like to have different sizes on hand, so I started crushing it myself. I'll probably do a video on how to make the crusher I use. It's super simple, works great, and saves me $. I'll try and get that video out ASAP

      I was gonna buy a stone crusher on Amazon from a link I found on a video, but when I went to order it, it was unavailable. Go figure...lol It was a couple of galvanized pipes that were kinda of overpriced I thought. One fit inside the other so that a sliding hammer was formed, with caps threaded on the ends for crushing...

  • @LotsORamdomStuff

    What is the wire inside the ring for? And what did you paint it purple with?

    • @ApollosRings
      @ApollosRings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wood rings can break very easily, so I like to reinforce my wood rings with titanium wire. It adds strength and helps with crush resistance. Since the wire is titanium it is still very lightweight.
      The purple paint is so that the titanium wire doesn't show through at all if there are any small gaps in opal, and also makes any small gaps much less visible. I match the paint to the color of the opal being used.

    • @LotsORamdomStuff

    How do you free the ring from the mandrel?

    • @ApollosRings
      @ApollosRings  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an excellent question, and something I have had lots of issues with. This is super old footage, I now have a much better setup that I'll have a video on shortly, but when I had to use this mandrel I had to be extremely careful when freeing the ring. I would take a very sharp pointed tool and very slowly and carefully trim te edges just enough to break the bond of the glue. Problem was that every now and again the glue would seep under the ring. I ended up breaking a couple rings before I scrapped this setup for a much better mandrel. Entirely too much work wasted when they break.

    • @terrythornton1549
      @terrythornton1549 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I thought when I saw you glueing, that stuff gets into any tiny space. If a nylon mandrel would work that would come free more easily, but it may not give enough friction to hold the ring. Will look for your later videos. Your presentation is good and very informative.

    • @ApollosRings
      @ApollosRings  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah, you are absolutely right about the glue getting into tiny spaces. If I used the thick stuff it would work better, but I have accidentally used medium on more than one occasion and had disastrous results.
      I eventually ended up making my own bushings out of recycled HDPE and turned rings on a pen mandrel for quite some time. The HDPE works unbelievably well. I've sort of retired the pen mandel now though and use a specific ring turning attachment for the lathe. Took a bit of getting used to, but now I hate using anything else.

  • @jayrogers4775
    @jayrogers4775 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure why you put the steel wire in. Even a fairly thin bentwood ring sealed with cyno is incredibly strong. I just finished a plain wood one 7mm wide and 2mm thick and it's not possible to break with my bare hands. Anything strong enough to break it would badly damage the finish and ruin it anyway.
