I own a 1966 that was my dads truck,I love the thing and it is bullet proof,it'll run forever. Those engines were like a modern day diesel.Pure toquore ,thanks for the vidio.
I owned a 1963 GMC Carry All 4wd drive 4 speed, 305 V6. Regarding eh 'plaid' valve covers, AS I understand, engineers pulled engines off the line for mods in the production changes. The plaid valve covers were to let a future engineer or tech, knows mods have been performed.
Family had a 66 GMC 3/4 ton with V6 we loaded that thing with firewood and everything else would haul or pull anything as long as you didn't have to do more than 50 MPH lol.
I'm told it was in the showroom at the local GMC dealer. I'd have been showing it off but I doubt my grandfather did. They were so dirty when I was a kid the plaid was barely visible!
I learned something today. I’ve never seen a big block V6, and the plaid valve covers, if someone told me about this before I saw this video. I wouldn’t have believed it. My uncle had a 63 Chevy step side. He put a 500 Cadillac in it. It had a B and M quick shift. I’ve got some very fond memories of that truck. It was a very good looking truck.
Love your video. I have my G-father’s ‘63, stepside, grand 4 speed, K1500, 3/4t, 4x4, 305E V6, w/ the original winch on the front & PTO out the rear - all still functioning. Has a 5:1 gear ratio front & back and was really a farm implement on our land in central Texas. Still have those same white dog-dish hubs😊, and evergreen paint. It has 78K original miles on it. It too was garaged and now resides in my garage here in Tulsa. Too many great memories to regale here, but I think of him everytime i walk out in my garage. That great smell of American iron & engine….so very good!!😊
Very cool old truck, that's wild about the valve covers ! If I was going to fix up a pick up of that vintage, the GMC w/the big V6 would be top of the list.
The first thing most people who don't realize what a pure truck engine the v-6 is,is to yank it out and toss in a chevy engine. The plad valve covers were used to introduce the 305E which featured 3 ring pistons and an economy cam.63 was the only year. That same year they also made available the 230/292 chevy 6. Nice truck, glad you're keeping the V-6,it is a great engine.
I enjoyed your presentation,i remember as a kid going into junk yards with my Dad and him saying...see that old truck? Thats the best engine GM has ever made ,the V6 big block... thank you sir ..
A 348 cubic inch V8 with two cylinders removed. I had one of these. Lots of low rpm grunt, not much top speed due to 4:10 gears. Good truck for pulling a boat.
No nothing similar to the 348, other than a similar looking valve cover. This engine out weighs the 348 by about 200lbs, huge 4.25" piston bore and the spark plugs are inboard on the intake manifold side. Solid lifters with an actual rocker shaft. Takes two men and a boy to lift the large journal crank.
I was told years ago the plaid valve covers were only put on the 351 V-6. I know there were several cubic inches motors. The 305, 351, 402, and a 478. They also built a 702 V-12. It was a solid cast block, but had four heads on it. I don't recall the HP, I want to say it was around 325, but the torque was over 600.. GM designed and built all their V-6 motors to run for 500,000 miles.
repaint looks to be Earl Scheib - was popular option back in the 1970's if you just needed paint, and not a tick-sheet restoration. (they might have even washed it before they painted it...) very cool old truck!!
I believe those came with a breather type cap on the valve cover, instead of the solid one, to act as an air intake for the PCV valve or road draft tube, however this one is equipped. Without the breather cap, it can build up pressure in the crankcase and cause oil to leak out of the main seals.
@@kylescarfarm With that in mind, I'll sleep on it and see what happens, I'm in my mid 70s and have some health issues.....we will communicate again soon... You figure out what it's worth to ya meanwhile.....👍🤔
That's a beauty. Very nice keeping it in the family. Thanks for sharing ! 👍👍👍

The plaid valve covers are cool!
That's Kool enjoy your grandfather's 63 GMC for many years thanks for sharing with us
Great to see these old survivors. Glad it’s unmolested, those old V6’s are great engines.

Very nice truck. A true survivor. Keep it as is!

Nice truck. Those are amazing engines.
Can you imagine buying this brand new and with the plaid valve covers ? would have been so cool

I have a 63 with a 350 plus a B and M quick shift!
Outstanding truck . I'm jealous.
Awesome example of a survivor. The ol V 6 sounds like the ol Chevy 235 idling. Ha ha!!
What a beauty! Happy she is all orginal mechanically.
Thanks, I plan to keep it original!

Wow that truck sounds like real workhouse! Thanks for sharing!
@@kylescarfarmHow is it that the plaid valve covers look to be in such great condition as old as they are?
Thank you. Thank you🤩

I didn't finish the one sentence, the plad valve covers were only used in 63,and only on the 305E

Your Dad is a smart guy! Very underappreciated engine!

Plaid Valve Covers only came on random 1963 305E to my knowledge
Very nice pickup truck!🙂🙃😉

Your funny, I forgot about Earl. His paint always had that whitish haze on them.
Cool old truck!!!

Very good point.
Nice truck
Thanks 👍
You installed the "good humor" hubcaps on it. Like the other ones better.
Three on the tree, Armstrong steering, Legstrom brakes--gawd, how I hate the "basics" of the time..!
Ya still have the 63 V-6 GMC? I've got a complete pulled engine if you're interested? Very unique engines..... I'm in apple country Upstate NY....💪🤠
Quite a distance from Iowa, otherwise I'd like to have another!

Sounds too noisy, these were good trucks. Leaf springs in back.
I would fix that drivers door and the rest of the rust issues and repaint it.
That was my intention but decided to leave as is. I've had a straight rust free door for years but never installed it. The patina look suits me.
“Dual Climate Control” LOL
Big whoop... 🙄
