Sorry for the sound issues. I think I’ll have everything dialed in for the most part by Friday. It’s just growing pains as I work to improve the overall audio so people listening on different devices can have a good experience. I realize it was clipping a bit today after I raised the volume. That should be better next time as well.
It never mattered what Jesus' skin tone was until the American Democrat party decided it did a long time ago when they wanted to insist he was European white. But ... I like to remind the ignorant bigots of my day who think Jesus was Subsaharan black that on the lines of latitude where Israel is, that's a white skin tone ... all around world following those lines. You go to Iraq next door, Lebanon, the Gaza strip, all those places the Bible references, go take a trip, they're all white. Well, they're a mix. They go from white to tan. In relation to the USA, you're looking at the US-Mexican border because those are Israel's lines of latitude. From native America, we can guesstimate that if they were outside all of the time, then they were probably more tan, although southern European white Rome was all over Israel at the time, Israel had recently-for-skintone come out of captivity to mostly white Iraqi Babylon, and Israel was always an advanced modern society for the current world, which means they intermarried with all their white neighbors. But again, it never mattered until the American Democrat party decided it mattered way back when. They still think it matters, but the skintone of their bigot brainwashed puppets has shifted. Same animal, different demographic. In 100 years, assuming we still exist, it'll probably have shifted again because division is the bread and butter of the Democrat party. They have never stopped being what they are and will never stop being what they are.
You hit the nail on the head when you said "They just want to hijack Jesus for their side. I just want to understand the real Jesus because he's my Lord. He's not my tool for promoting my agenda." What I have, sadly, seen quite often, is people who claim to believe in "Jesus" but they really believe not in Jesus, but in *their* "Jesus," who believes and says what *they* want him to. A "Jesus" who makes them comfortable. If God's word, if Jesus' word, never makes you uncomfortable, then you aren't hearing what He's saying.
@@JamesRichardWiley Ah! You must have missed the story of the resurrection! So sorry. There is actually historical evidence for the resurrection. You have to look at it properly.
I like the way you put the world's version of a sinner as being marginalized and victimized when they have to be confronted with their own sin. That's a perfect example of how some justify their sinful behavior.
We are all sinners. Every last one of us. But with Jesus we have ALL been washed and sanctified. We just have to follow him. We can't be holy enough we cant be good enough. But thank God for the cleansing blood of Jesus!!
As someone that grew up around Mediterraneans and is one myself, I see no point in questioning his race. We all generally look the same, the cultural differences are the most notable. Greeks, Spanish, Italians, Israelis, most North Africans look to be the same race almost without genetic testing.
It doesn't matter what Jesus looks like. He gave his life for ours. He paid a debt we could NEVER pay. And one day when we meet the thought in my mind will not be "wow he looks just like the pictures". It will be a full recognizing of his light and love. It will be feeling the full impact of his sacrifice. It will be that feeling that you get when you are HOME. Safe, loved beyond love, peace, joy, and gratitude!
Except that it does matter when you are understanding the context of stories. For example, the story of the good Samaritan is highly subversive in its context because Jesus is a Jew speaking to Jews who (at the time) *hated* Samaritans. Without thinking about who he was we miss the punch of the story. This goes beyond specific examples though and matters for the bigger picture as well. Jesus belonged to a conquered and oppressed people. He wasn't a Roman, the world super-power. This matters because if he were Roman and declared Lord then people would just see him as another Caesar. However, when a Jew (and a crucified one at that!) Is declared Lord, it's a scandal to the Jews and Folly to the gentiles. Lastly, consider our context, are we more like Romans (yes, America = super power) or more like the Jews (no... Unless you are part of a minority in America). This difference colors how we see the gospel. Passover is a story of liberation of oppressed people, and how you see Christ our passover lamb differs based on whether you need liberation from oppressors or not.
@@fishgibblets979 You're wrong. It doesn't matter at all. If you knew about what Jesus said then you would know that He was NOT concerned with oppression! In fact, when His diciples tried to get Him to conquer Rome He rebuked them! He told them that His kingdom is not of this world. He then proceeded to tell them to pay their taxes to their oppressors! Jesus NEVER talked about race unless is was to show that it does not matter! How someone sees the "passover lamb" is irrelevant and whether someone is "oppressed" or not is also irrelevant. Christ came for one purpose, to save sinners from their sin. Paul later tells us that in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek. Meaning that race has no bearing on salvation. Christ did NOT come to save people from oppression, only their sins. Understanding context has NOTHING to with one's oppressed status. It only has to do with understanding what Jesus meant by what He said to the crowd at the time. To try and somehow link that to race in America is ridiculous.
This was a great video. My Progressive friends share this meme so much and I've addressed one or two issues here or there but most of them haven't even read a single book of the Bible or any other work from outside their subculture. So, they can't begin to think of Jesus through any lens other than the lenses of their subculture. The next time I see them share this meme I'll just share this video in hopes they learn something of the real Jesus. I mean, they have been conditioned to ignore anything that takes more than five minutes of their time but there may be one who is moved to learn more.
Clearly "colonizer" Jesus is a stand-in for white people in general. They've been indoctrinated that whites\Americans\Christians are the source of all the world's ills, so they instinctively latch on to anything they see as "other" even without any understanding of the underlying principles. This is why they hold so many contradictory beliefs, e.g. pro lgbtbbq but also pro islam, traditional gender roles are oppressive but a child exhibiting cross gender preferences is a reason to transition them. The fact that they say Jesus wasn't white as if it's some big slam dunk just reveals their own bigotry.
"Actually! The historic Jesus....." Then they proceed to paint a direct opposite caricature of Jesus 🤭 Thanks for sharing this one Mike! I love your ability to "think biblically" about everything. It's gonna be real awkward when the real Jesus shows up and we all have no choice but to shut up and be ashamed of ourselves.
not everyone will be ashamed. the ones who are saved, and who have been given a new heart have nothing to be ashamed of..i know you didnt mean it like that. im not ashamed of the gospel. or a dark skinned dark haired Jewish man.
Jesus explained to the rich young man that he should sell his possessions and give his money to the poor, take up his cross and follow him. Every Christian should take these words seriously if they want to go to heaven and be with Jesus.
@@JamesRichardWiley It's not just riches. The point being made by Jesus is not one of earning a place in Heaven by performance, but one of the evidence of a true Christian is that they let go of what ever earthly thing(s) that they love enough to hold them back from dying to themselves and following Him.
I commented the link to this video under every Facebook post that included this meme until Facebook wouldn’t let me comment anymore 😂 Thank you for your time Pastor Mike, even before I was saved I saw this meme floating around and knew it didn’t seem quite right.
Thank you Mike, I've been praying for this. I've recently been confronted with a "Jesus hung out with sinners" type of people and I informed them that they are called to turn from their sin. "But you can always repent" one said... But how many times can you repent? How long can you continue to sin and expect God to forgive? True repentance comes with change, change that happens when we are born again in Christ. I've serious grappled with whether I've been wrong to confront them. These same people told me they don't listen to scripture, only the words of Christ. The scripture I shared were the words of Christ. They also began to tell me about their interpretation of God through their intimate relationships with him. Progressive Jesus is not my Jesus, my Jesus gave me words to follow so I don't have to leave it up to my interpretation. Praise Him!
So enjoying this. Just started. I love how you explain point 1 about Jesus being white. My sister told me once, and I think she's pretty wise. There are no paintings of the real Jesus; WE are pictures of Jesus by our lives and changed hearts. Yeah. That was good.
@@RubioBoy85 I love that rendition! I still have a old school "painted" rendition of what Jesus looked like. I just want to see Him face to face. That's all that really matters.

If these folks actually went back in time to the days of colonialism, they’d be hard pressed to find any paintings of “Jesus” in a British colony. Protestants tended to not have such things back then.

@@JamesRichardWiley Brother, no matter what your spiritual belief is, its undeniable that Jesus Christ was a real man that actually died on the cross and His body was missing from His tomb 3 days later. There are no other rational explanations other than the fact that the Gospels are real eyewitness accounts and Jesus Christ is the Son of God who rose from the dead. He lived a sinless life and healed countless people. He taught us the most valuable lessons in human history. He came here to be the perfect once and for all sacrifice to atone for human iniquity for all those that believe in Him. He extends this free gift and free mercy out of His love for all of us. John 3:15-21 “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.” We have all broken God’s laws and fallen short of His glory. God is a perfect judge who will judge us righteously and fairly. The wages of sin is death: eternal death. We earned our wages rightly by our lifetime of iniquities. If He were to judge all of us, we would all come up short. Thats why Jesus came to grant us mercy. Jesus Christ took on all of our sin on the cross and suffered the punishment that we deserve. We broke the law and He served our sentence. He rose on the third day triumphant over sin and death forever. He justifies us and demonstrates His promise through His resurrection. He promises all of us who believe in Him everlasting life, not because we earned it or deserve it, but because He is good and He wants us to turn from our evil and cling to Him for His grace. In order to truly believe in Him and be saved, we have to look at our sin in God’s light and recognize how serious it is. We must repent and trust in Jesus Christ as our only hope and only salvation. I will pray for you brother. I love you.
I've had a few college kids my age try to come at me with the "white Jesus" thing. Showing them a picture of asian Jesus usually ends that discussion before it starts.
The Black Nazarene (Spanish: El Nazareno Negro, Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno; Filipino: Poóng Itím na Nazareno, Hesus Nazareno) is a life-sized image of a dark-skinned, kneeling Jesus Christ carrying the Cross enshrined in the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in the Quiapo district of the City of Manila, Philippines.
@@JamesRichardWiley There was a tradition at one time that he looked like King David. David, the descendant of Canaanites, Moabites, and Jews, was described as “ruddy”, which has traditionally been understood as red-haired. That was a Moab trait and occasionally, you can find red headed Arabs. Not white, but not the dark end of the spectrum, either. I reject the short haired look. Short hair was a Greek and Roman thing and most Jews wore their long unless they were embracing Roman and Greek culture.

Mike I can't tell you again how important this video is for today. I recently sent an evangelistic video (for the first time) to a friend I've known a long time. We don't talk alot but never the less we've known each other a while. How he responded was just like he had been watching memes that are telling lies about Christianity. What he called me and what he said about Christianity was literally the opposite of the truth. It really made no sense. I had to take the time and brake down every lie in response. I pray it opened his eyes to how totally ignorant he is about the real Jesus and Christianity. Thanks you so much!!! Keep up the Truthful work. 😁
How can they say "Historical Jesus" only wanted "justice through restoration" & to "liberate the oppressed" when the Bible is pretty much all we know about Jesus and the Bible makes it CLEAR that Jesus came to atone for our sins and give us eternal life? Edit: Y'all I'm not saying the Cross was His ONLY purpose!
*sigh* I’ll never understand. Jesus said several times why he came. They just want a mascot for their agendas, which is ironic given that they claim they’re setting the record straight compared to Jesus’ conservative caricature counterpart.
The atonement through sacrifice theory is a prominent one in Christian culture, but it definitely isn't and can't be the *only* true theory on the purpose of Jesus' time on earth, and here's why: Jesus spent 3 years in ministry teaching the masses, which would be pointless if Jesus' plan was to die on the cross as atonement for the sins of the world. The bible makes it clear that Jesus wanted to bring the inverted kingdom of God down to earth, so he taught to love your enemies and that the last should be first. Thinking that Jesus *just* came to atone for our sins sterilizes him of his teachings, which I would argue are the most important part of his time on earth.

I grew up seeing the blue-eyed Jesus and the black Jesus both. Back then, in a more civilized time in many ways, it was understood that different groups of people often depicted Jesus as one of them because he died to save them, too. The modern, olive Jesus is probably closer to actual history, but doesn't all these different kinds of people getting to depict him as 'just like them" come closer to what he was about?
Yea I think it makes sense to depict him through the lense of whatever culture is envisioning him as. So while He is often depicted as the White Renaissance Jesus. In African or Asian or Hispanic cultures he'd be depicted as such. Which I think is a beautiful sentiment. That conversation Jesus had with Pilot when Jesus says "You say that I am" , Is used by every denier of Jesus' Divinity. Now I'm off to go check concordance sources for the greek...since I have no idea which Matthew series video you addressed this in. And thumbs up for raising volume. I could hear much better.
I can't help but laugh at how soft and effeminate they made colonizer Jesus look. It seriously looks like he could be on a Pantene commercial. I find it interesting that those who bring up Jesus not being white act like it's a major "gotcha" that's really supposed to upset us. Of course he wasn't white. The paintings of Him as white were probably done by people who have been gone for years. It's like the people who act like they're gleefully destroying our faith by telling us that Jesus may not have been born on December 25.
To think women back then cared about anything more than today is what is unscientific. All prior history in those regions clearly depicts all men of influence as good looking. Zeus and Thor could also be shampoos models and the stories on them are from 1000 years prior. Would we know of them if they had dad bods? Look at all those Italian sculptures. Does anyone know who the fat guy on the turtle is? Look at every modern election in America since women could vote, the better-looking guy has won every time. I bet JFK is still the most recognizable. The psychology on what women will pick is well understood. Even bringing people back to life wouldn't impress women if Jesus weren't good-looking. No women would care if Jesus was the son of God unless he was good-looking. All kinds of people were performing magic in other regions and no one cared about those that did that stuff because there were clearly no extremely good-looking Warlocks or Shamans running around. And since the Romans were in Israel 60 years before he was born, Jesus was likely half to 3/4 white. As someone that is half Asian, except for the lack of cowboy hats, I can't tell people from that region apart from anyone in Texas. They are white now and it had to have started as soon as the Romans arrived. That's only how it worked every other time when they showed up somewhere. God knows this basic psychology about people. And if you think about it, why would God make his son homely? Are people saying God had no ability to decide how Jesus would look? Does that mean Jesus could've been born a female? So, God could predetermine sex but not looks? Aren't many people believing such a thing really no different than them hoping Jesus is the same color? I'm seeing a lot of people arguing God had no control over certain aspects of biology and that is blasphemous...
Also, I see CGI bots that look like real people these days. Anyone can make one it seems. That's why I will never accept a CGI rendition from a TV show from a dozen years ago that looks cartoonish. One can also point out the shroud was carbon dated at not even a thousand years old. I'm not surprised the special is never aired because one can surely pick it to shreds these days. Who accepts a cartoonish rendition from a Hollywood special as empirical fact? Morons, that's who...
Seriously calling out sin is like having a snowball fight with sea urchins. Whether I hit my target or miss wildly, MY conscience is still getting pricked too.

We need to find out what the scriptures say about Him. That's not putting Him in a box *or* letting Jesus be Jesus. That's knowing the Jesus of scripture. 😁
I studied art history in college. The artwork was simply to depict the gospel to people in Europe who did not know how to read. Each culture depicts Jesus looking like their culture. Totally agree.
Awesome video! 👏🏼 Unfortunately I realize I have had “meme Jesus”thinking at times. I just want to please the Lord, and I pray that He gives me discernment on these things.
“He is not my tool, promoting my agenda. I am his tool, promoting his agenda.” Beautifully said! I literally went “Ooooohhhh , That’s good!” Out loud when you said that, Mike!
Mike - Love you bro and I thank you for letting the Holy Spirit work through you. I have to correct you a bit here. The reason you can go to Caribbean countries, South American countries, African countries, Australasian countries and even North American countries and find white Jesus clearly is not because of ignorance of the world around them or simply making it look like the people there. Clearly when caucasian people arrived in those areas they knew the population there wasn't white. Those pictures were used as a tool during some very painful periods to assert a hierarchy and so yes it was racist. This is just history. You can go to many of these countries and find the pictures/statues still there among a mass of people that do not look like them and you can date when those pictures/statues were installed. Colonisation cannot be ignored here, there was a method and unfortunately imagery was used. I agree often the imagery of Jesus is just the reflection of the people and there are places where it shows this but think logically - that just cannot be the case everywhere (see above areas)! It also doesn't tie up timewise. I agree people can often look to racism as an answer when it isn't but in this case unfortunately it very much is.
I completely agree with you as an African; many people in my country reject Jesus because of the pictures they have of him as a white man introduced by colonial masters and that sends painful memories , I love your teaching Pastor Mike and I always learn something new from your teaching. This is just a correction of course in love
Wouldn't it make sense, though, that the colonizers would bring their own versions of Jesus with them to these new lands? This was the image they always had of Christ, so of course they would believe that it was the "right image".
@@jesussaves6625 Not at all. If the genuine reason was to provide converts by belief and not intimidation then you would make the image as close to the people you are looking to convert. I also disagree that they believed the image was "right" because they were aware of where Jesus was born - at best it was just a relatable thing as Pastor Mike said but notice, that same 'relatable' reason would apply when spreading among a native (or enslaved) population. It makes far more sense that it was kept as white images for control in terms of hierarchy, especially when it wasn't exactly the whole scriptures in full that was taught - otherwise they'd have to admit their colonising/slavery conquests were unbiblical. Its good to explore possible reasons so good suggestion but yeah, still is pretty clear to me
I remember the first time I saw a 'historical Jesus' picture, a long time ago, I thought it was interesting - I'd never seen a portrayal of Jesus' ethnicity as He perhaps was. But then more and more and especially these days, more, I saw this become the meme it is now, acting like it was the colour of Jesus skin that was the main thing. So long as the colour of His skin or His ethnicity is never the main thing, I find all portrayals of Him around the world beautiful. My husband and I were gifted a gorgeous story artwork with a Tibetan looking Jesus. Yesterday I was at Truro cathedral in the UK and found it beautiful to see how people there in history had depicted the Old and New Testament saints, even if their aesthetic had that Anglicised flowing hair. Having bought into the progressive diversity ideas as a teenager, I am so glad to have the freedom God offers us to appreciate some of the true diversity God loves.
Jesus is a man made character who appears in an ancient Hebrew story about a wandering messianic preacher who can be molded into anything you want to believe.
I think you make a good point about shifting our mindset and priorities to HIS perspective and values. You are right; his focus was on the eternal Kingdom that has to do with freedom from the oppression of SIN and reconciliation with GOD, and we are the criminal that gets restored through Jesus' blood.
I LOVED this video concept, it was awesome!! Memes are such a widespread cultural phenomenon, so your analysis of this is SO appreciated!! What a great reminder and example of always discerning the world around us. Thank you!!! 😁
7:31 I had some thoughts on this… It’s totally fine for Jesus to be Korean, in a Korean community, or to have darker skin in a country with those kinds of people in it. The reason we have issues with ‘white Jesus” is because the United States of America is not a ‘White-People Country’, it’s an ‘Everyone Country’. Our Jesus needs represent Everyone. Don’t get me wrong, it’s OK to have a white Jesus in your interpretation. The problem is using this version of Jesus to enforce a class or race division, as was rightly pointed out in the video. I doubt the KKK would have used crosses in their symbolism if Jesus was had olive skin in their interpretation. The ‘White Jesus’ _can_ be used to represent ‘Everyone’ in this vacuum, in the absence of these divisions. This should be proof enough that it’s not implicitly racist on its own - people are racist, not Jesus. That being said, I _would_ like to see more darker-skinned Jesus in our artwork, to help bring Everyone into the fold.
Mike already explained in this video that artwork from Ethiopia paints Jesus as Ethiopian. Jesus in China would be painted as Chinese. The reason there is so much of "white" Jesus artwork, is because of the Renaissance period when there was a huge explosion of artwork in white areas of the world.
Look up Orthodox iconography. That is the true depiction of Christ. We cannot make Christ in our own image for the sake of inclusivity. He is who He is.
I’m about to swell your head, Mike. But you deserve it. I just had a picture jump in my head while listening to you of the apostles sitting at your feet completely enthralled with your teachings. You really are special. I think often about that person you told us about whom told you you shouldn’t be a teacher. Man, am I ever glad you didn’t listen to him. We would really have been robbed. 💝
Mike there's another meme just like that circulating that I would like your opinion on. It says: Genocide is biblical, loving your enemies is biblical but only one is Christ like. Slavery is biblical, chainbreaking is biblical but only one is Christ like. Patriarchy is biblical, counter culture elevation of women is biblical, but only one is Christ like. Retributive violence is biblical, grace filled restoration is biblical, but only one is Christ like. Segregation is biblical, unity is biblical, but only one is Christ like. Christ transforms but not the bible. Be wary of those who know one but not the other. (Jordan Harrell) I am really curious to hear your take on this.
Thank you so very much...bc I was following an unconditional love ministry....they began to say things like the killed by church and state and justice was only through restoration saying the devil may one day be saved...I hadnt yet found your clear teaching and it all was being taught behind closed doors at a conference and not in the main public teachings. it confused me for a while. i lost friends ...but even in confusion ....I knew that teaching was taking people away from the cross ..thank you for such clarity...
To be honest I don't care what race Jesus is. Why are people so hyper fixated on an immutable characteristic... I used to be a national socialist, and extremely hyper fixated on race and ultra nationalism. Jesus delivered me from that form of thinking, he made me realise how wrong I was. I used to worship man (yes, that Austrian Painter, I know its cringe)but now those things have become less relevant to me. Christ has filled my heart with so much love. I just want to love people. Speak the truth in love, but love nonetheless.
Heard some pastor say the other day "Go to Israel and look at the people... they're white!" I mean, that's not wrong, is it? I don't know. I think there are some people (Mike excluded of course) who say "Jesus looked middle-eastern" in a sort of snobbish way as if they're educated when really it's not something they've spent a lot of time thinking about or looking in to.
The real Jesus teaches us that “Whoever shall divorce his wife, and shall marry another, commits adultery against her. And if a woman, having divorced her husband, should marry another, she commits adultery”, and "whoever shall marry her who has been divorced commits adultery", and clearly warns that "anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to depart into hell."
What about if your brain causes you to try to take over the government in a coup? Should you have your brain removed? Or maybe have a few ECT treatments?
Wow. Recreating a face from a skull found in the middle-east? People must have no idea how many wars between armies from countries other than Israel were fought on that ground. That area of the world has seen more battles than almost any other country on earth. That skull could belong to a soldier who was Egyptian, Roman, Greek, Babylonian, Assyrian or any other of a dozen warring armies who not only used soldiers their own race but any of a dozen other nationalities.
I'm not saying that the recreation from the skull was entirely accurate, but I would imagine that a forensic archaeologist would have more knowledge about where the skull came from and it's lineage.
I came away from this more certain of my Salvation. Just going thru hard time. I thought this was Biblically accurate. (Just a note, your scripture of man/woman belonging to each exclusively has been logged over me that a woman must always give herself to her husband on demand. Honest. Over decades, in a few churches, all Protestant of one form or another. One, if we have Jesus as our Savior and are married, why would we withhold? Sure rough day here n there as we aren't perfect. Why have I heard this in Church often? I was told by 2 men, I must submit to husband as he is head. No problem. You must love me as Jesus loved the church and He laid down His life for her. Riles the power hungry w/o Jesus.) Thank you, Mike for all your hard work. The broadcast was fine. Your a perfectionist, we benefit. I love that YT didn't get a commercial. I think it hard to keep a train of thought. I think YT wants us schizophrenic. I found with purchase of a JBL 3x4" BT, my sound so much better than phone. Best $35 ever spent. Sale. 🕊Shalom
Thank you so much for this. I’ve already used it to clarify some stuff to several people at work! Especially about why he was painted white wasn’t a sign of racism just lack of knowledge of other skin tones!
I'm probably going to regret writing this, but why does the "colonizer Jesus" look like a "non-binary" guest on a main stream talk show that thinks voiced opposing opinions are actual violence?
This portrait was comissioned during a fad of "buddy Jesus" type discipling. "Jesus loves you just the way you are, you're super special to Jesus, if you could see Jesus the way he sees you, blah blah blah" so the goal was to make him as soft, approachable and non-threatening as possible. There's actually a black Jesus portrait that is nearly identical to this one, my mom had both of them painted on black velvet back in the day...'It was the 70s' is my only excuse for the fact that we owned velvet art.
Outstanding video and teaching Mike. You bless me so much with the way in which you break things down, and in your delivery. I Thank God for this ministry.
What I find disturbing is all the new age churches out there and church leaders who are not teaching the the word. They will take a part of a scripture and twist it and turn it to fit their needs. Like all the prosperity preachers on TBN, Hillsong also the music they sing these days is not worshiping God.
So glad you did a video on this topic. I've seen the meme pop up every now and again for about the past year and it really bothered me every time i saw it. I'm looking forward to what you have to say on the topic.
I knew more -at 5 years old- from a clay animation video my parents bought on VHS about the resurrection of Jesus than the creators of this meme. 🤦🏾♀️ Spoiler: The movie was quoting *scripture.* Edit- The movie is called "The Miracle Maker" if anyone is interested.
The fact that I'm listening to this with the sound all the way up on my phone while my wife is sleeping next to me n she hasn't woken up and asked me to put headphones on verifies your statement lol
I've seen some variant of this argument since the 1980s, and you're correct, both conservative Christians and progressive Christians push this. For me personally, I've just kind of come to grips with the idea that if he knocked on my door and I see him standing on the other side if I have the Holy Spirit in me, and the Bible tells me that that the spirit fills those who follow and believe in him, then the Holy Spirit will leap for joy upon seeing him. And in a quasi related note, I'm becoming a firm follower of the "don't have an image" philosophy, because it can be a problem. In fact the only "religious" imagine in my home is an angel painted by a Christian friend who painted it while going through a divorce and suicidal at the time. As an individual who was also suicidal for a period of time, I fell in love with the painting because I could feel the pain that she was going through. I had an opportunity to get it, so I did and it's held a central position in my living room since, I don't view it as worshiping an angel or heavenly being, its a painting from someone who was going through hell and the painting depicted her grief in a way that I could connect with so I wanted it so much that she gave it to me, probably mostly to shut me up but possibly because she knew how much I appreciated this particular work.
@@-.George. Yes, absolutely true! Jesus is physically real and alive and reigning beside the Father in Heaven. My comment is about what is in the video. The artist of this meme has labeled a fake version of Jesus "historical Jesus" when they really mean reinterpreting Jesus in a way that is less offensive to modern secular culture.
@@ethanmoon3925 But according to the Bible, Jesus is really black. When I first saw that picture, I had respect for it. Other images of black and white Jesus are images of Satan.
I agree with everything except the reason Jesus multiplied the bread. He actually said He has compassion on the crowd because they haven't eaten in a long time and then He feeds them.
European artists of the Middle Ages and later had a fairly good idea of what Jews of their day looked like but didn't want their Jesus to look like a much despised Jew. Michaelangelo's David isn't even circumcised...
What do you think of the portrait of Jesus, Prince of Peace, done by Akiane, the child prodigy that claims God gave her a vision to paint? It does seem miraculous to me that a 8yo could do such a painting, but curious your thoughts on this.
Picture Jesus as a Mediterranean man that looks like hes been walking around preaching and working for 20 years because that’s where he was from and what he did. Best you could deduce is he had long, dark hair and beard, probably a bit of a rough appearance from working in the sun all day for most of his life.
This was very helpful in refuting alot of the misunderstandings people have about Jesus, great video Pastor Mike I appreciate your ministry God bless! 🙏🏾
For your first point “was Jesus white.” I was someone who believed this for the longest time as a kid, but after my Christian school went through the middle east talking about all the places Jesus has been it hit me like a brick and I felt so dumb! 😂
Don't feel bad, most of the Fox News crowd thinks Jesus was White too. Up until the 1970s, the majority of Catholic & Protestant churches in America only had images of White Jesus on their walls, so that's what people had in their homes.
I don’t know what complexion Jesus was and I don’t really care, it’s inconsequential to my faith. That said, it’s really silly to think that what people look like in 2022 in a specific place necessarily means that’s how they looked 2000 years ago.
If you trace the history of the Jews you will find they came from Asia. This is supported by DNA research. There were people of all skin tones during that time. They went from Asia to what is now Turkey then down to Egypt.
@@freegraceau It's not silly. It's quite probable that people who live in middle eastern countries have always been darker than those who live in cold climates.
Regarding your Section on 'Citizenship in Heaven', it seems to me that meme Jesus is what drives 'Kingdom Now', 'Christian Dominionism', and 'Seven Mountain Mandate' theology. Matthew 26:53, Luke 17:20-21, John 6:15; 18:36, Philippians 3:20-21, & Hebrews 13:14 (especially the latter two) all speak against these teachings. There is only one place in scripture where one finds a reference to seven mountains...
Meme Review: Mike Winger edition lol. I wouldn't mind that series. Sadly, I a lot of people get their theology from memes on social media, so I do think it is important to dissect them and show their error.
I have seen many Jewish people who are light-skinned and have blue eyes, but also some that are darker-skinned. My conclusion is I do not think we can know for sure. I also think this does not matter at all. No one had photography back then, and artists' views of Jesus I do not think were contemporaries of Jesus.
Yep, I've also seen fairly light skinned (not white) Jewish people with green eyes, but they could be more recent variations. We don't really know. But their ancestors came from southern Babylonia, which is modern day Iraq.
Exodus 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Leviticus 26:1 “You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I Am the Lord your God. Acts 17:29 Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man.
"A good many Christian-political writers think that Christianity began going wrong [...] at a very early stage. Now this idea must be used by us to encourage once again the conception of a “historical Jesus” to be found by clearing away later “accretions and perversions” and then to be contrasted with the whole Christian tradition. [...] "In the first place [these constructions] all tend to direct men’s devotion to something which does not exist, for each “historical Jesus” is unhistorical. The documents say what they say and cannot be added to; each new “historical Jesus” therefore has to be got out of them by suppression at one point and exaggeration at another, and by that sort of guessing (brilliant is the adjective we teach humans to apply to it) on which no one would risk ten shillings in ordinary life, but which is enough to produce a crop of new Napoleons, new Shakespeares, and new Swifts, in every publisher’s autumn list. [...] "Our third aim is, by these constructions, to destroy the devotional life. For the real presence of the Enemy, otherwise experienced by men in prayer and sacrament, we substitute a merely probable, remote, shadowy, and uncouth figure, one who spoke a strange language and died a long time ago. Such an object cannot in fact be worshipped. Instead of the Creator adored by its creature, you soon have merely a leader acclaimed by a partisan, and finally a distinguished character approved by a judicious historian." -- Undersecretary Screwtape, as per C. S. Lewis

The quality and crispness of your voice was amazing after you fixed it at 33:00, your growing pains are not in vain
I have no problems here

You hit the nail on the head when you said "They just want to hijack Jesus for their side. I just want to understand the real Jesus because he's my Lord. He's not my tool for promoting my agenda."
What I have, sadly, seen quite often, is people who claim to believe in "Jesus" but they really believe not in Jesus, but in *their* "Jesus," who believes and says what *they* want him to. A "Jesus" who makes them comfortable. If God's word, if Jesus' word, never makes you uncomfortable, then you aren't hearing what He's saying.
And in the midst of this competition Jesus has nothing to say because he is dead and does not care.

God doesn't plan for us to sin.
The first time I heard anyone talk about Jesus' race was from internet atheists.
Nah, Im pretty sure it was on Good Times when James brought home the painting of "Black Jesus"
Fr. I don’t know many Christians that care about Jesus’ race except for people that assert that Jesus was black.
As someone that grew up around Mediterraneans and is one myself, I see no point in questioning his race. We all generally look the same, the cultural differences are the most notable.
Greeks, Spanish, Italians, Israelis, most North Africans look to be the same race almost without genetic testing.
@@Steph-sk3xb 100%
I belief Jesus was Jewish and worshiped the Jewish god Yahweh.
Amen 🙏🏻
@@fishgibblets979 Yup
Jesus is God and God cannot give up His life. He is immortal.

Then they proceed to paint a direct opposite caricature of Jesus 🤭

21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”
We have all broken God’s laws and fallen short of His glory. I love you.

Too bad nobody described what Jesus looked like.

Thank you so much for this, Pastor Mike! I’ve been seeing so many people hijacking Jesus for politics lately. I’ve always had the discernment to know that the things these people say aren’t correct, but am still learning how to explain why using scripture. As a new Christian, your videos have been so helpful!
Thanks for turning the volume up. It really helped.
Mike, when I watch your videos, I often end up hearing a nugget of truth I never heard before.

Oh, thank you so much! ♥️
They lightened him up big time from the European "Jesus".
Exactly!
Well done once again Pastor Mike!! Tackling timely issues biblically 😊

The history of external COLONISATION of Africa can be dated back from ancient, medieval, or modern history, depending on how the term COLONISATION is defined.
Ancient Greeks, Arabs, Romans, and Malays all established COLONIES colonies on the African continent, some of which endured centuries. In popular parlance, discussions of colonialism in Africa usually focus on the European conquests of the New Imperialism and the Scramble for Africa (1884-1914) era, followed by gradual DE COLONISATION after World War II. The principal powers involved in the modern COLONISATION of Africa are Britain, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain and Italy. In nearly all African countries today, the language used in government and media is the one imposed by a recent colonial power, though most people speak their native African languages.

And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. This is one of my favorite videos that Mike has done. We all need to stop putting Jesus in a box and let Jesus be Jesus.

Jesus quite literally puts the “Christ” in “Christian”.
Its good to explore possible reasons so good suggestion but yeah, still is pretty clear to me
@@ionman5164 Fair enough, brother. God bless.
What ancient Hebrew story is it? You can make up any sort of Jesus you want, but it doesn't mean there wasn't a real Jesus.
I think you make a good point about shifting our mindset and priorities to HIS perspective and values. You are right; his focus was on the eternal Kingdom that has to do with freedom from the oppression of SIN and reconciliation with GOD, and we are the criminal that gets restored through Jesus' blood.
Hopefully you will outgrow that.
"Jesus was a Bible thumper" 😂 Great line and great teaching in general.
I LOVED this video concept, it was awesome!! Memes are such a widespread cultural phenomenon, so your analysis of this is SO appreciated!! What a great reminder and example of always discerning the world around us. Thank you!!! 😁

I had some thoughts on this…
It’s totally fine for Jesus to be Korean, in a Korean community, or to have darker skin in a country with those kinds of people in it.
Yes to all of this 💛💛
This!
@@bradleyperry1735 are you referring to the Christ Pantocrator?
I’m about to swell your head, Mike. But you deserve it. I just had a picture jump in my head while listening to you of the apostles sitting at your feet completely enthralled with your teachings. You really are special.
I think often about that person you told us about whom told you you shouldn’t be a teacher. Man, am I ever glad you didn’t listen to him. We would really have been robbed. 💝
thank you Mike for going line by line and giving historical, biblical context. Jesus is Lord!
Mike there's another meme just like that circulating that I would like your opinion on.
It says:
Genocide is biblical, loving your enemies is biblical but only one is Christ like.
(Jordan Harrell)
I am really curious to hear your take on this.

Glad you switched to our team brother! What a great redemptive story. God bless.
Amen. Glory to God. thank you for your powerful testimony brother.
I think Mike made that point.
God bless you for all you do and thank you for this video in particular, very insightful and much needed!

Sale. 🕊Shalom
I love how they list "patriotic" as a negative.
Exactly, both versions are dramatized lol (this is coming from an artist)
This portrait was comissioned during a fad of "buddy Jesus" type discipling. "Jesus loves you just the way you are, you're super special to Jesus, if you could see Jesus the way he sees you, blah blah blah" so the goal was to make him as soft, approachable and non-threatening as possible. There's actually a black Jesus portrait that is nearly identical to this one, my mom had both of them painted on black velvet back in the day...'It was the 70s' is my only excuse for the fact that we owned velvet art.
I can see where you’re coming from xD. To me, the “historical Jesus” looks like a cave man
Outstanding video and teaching Mike. You bless me so much with the way in which you break things down, and in your delivery. I Thank God for this ministry.
The easiest way to handle this meme is to say "if I concede the historical Jesus will you follow his teaching?"
Man, I love Mike’s videos. THEY ARE SO GOOD!!!
What I find disturbing is all the new age churches out there and church leaders who are not teaching the the word. They will take a part of a scripture and twist it and turn it to fit their needs. Like all the prosperity preachers on TBN, Hillsong also the music they sing these days is not worshiping God.
It's funny the historical picture of Jesus is how I picture Peter...
Hello special people

So glad you did a video on this topic. I've seen the meme pop up every now and again for about the past year and it really bothered me every time i saw it. I'm looking forward to what you have to say on the topic.
I knew more -at 5 years old- from a clay animation video my parents bought on VHS about the resurrection of Jesus than the creators of this meme. 🤦🏾♀️
Spoiler: The movie was quoting *scripture.*
Edit- The movie is called "The Miracle Maker" if anyone is interested.
Do you know what platform I can watch it on? :)
Pastor Mike, thank you for all you do for us. We love you, you be our brilliant teacher.
The sound level hasn't improved, it's still as soft as the beat of a butterfly's wings.
Wait for it.
The fact that I'm listening to this with the sound all the way up on my phone while my wife is sleeping next to me n she hasn't woken up and asked me to put headphones on verifies your statement lol
Love the analogy!
Their "historical Jesus" is a "good teacher"! It's not Jesus, not the Messiah, not God! Just a guy who said nice things.
Historical Jesus is the Messiah and the God of Israel.
Looks down at the pile of burlap, felt, and hay. Yup. That straw man is well and truly beaten.
European artists of the Middle Ages and later had a fairly good idea of what Jews of their day looked like but didn't want their Jesus to look like a much despised Jew.
Michaelangelo's David isn't even circumcised...
I just finished a year in bible college, I'm very happy that the church I go to have biblical teachings.
What do you think of the portrait of Jesus, Prince of Peace, done by Akiane, the child prodigy that claims God gave her a vision to paint? It does seem miraculous to me that a 8yo could do such a painting, but curious your thoughts on this.
The problem with child refugee is that Israel was part of Roman Empire and Egypt was too. Two different states. Same empire.
I recently found this channel about a few days ago and I'm a big fan of how you stand up against all these perversions of Christianity
Picture Jesus as a Mediterranean man that looks like hes been walking around preaching and working for 20 years because that’s where he was from and what he did.
Best you could deduce is he had long, dark hair and beard, probably a bit of a rough appearance from working in the sun all day for most of his life.
Good. Jesus mainly did his ministry from 30-33 years of age I believe.
“Hmm these people don’t really look that white” lmao
I don’t know what complexion Jesus was and I don’t really care, it’s inconsequential to my faith.
That said, it’s really silly to think that what people look like in 2022 in a specific place necessarily means that’s how they looked 2000 years ago.
If you trace the history of the Jews you will find they came from Asia. This is supported by DNA research. There were people of all skin tones during that time. They went from Asia to what is now Turkey then down to Egypt.
@@freegraceau It's not silly. It's quite probable that people who live in middle eastern countries have always been darker than those who live in cold climates.
Thank-you for this. I've seen this and appreciate your braking it down. So appreciate your ministry!
They really know how to take all of the power and authority (on paper) from who Jesus Christ (Yeshua) is.

@55:47 That's the Apostle Paul, who wrote a substantial portion of the NT.
Exodus 20:4
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
Leviticus 26:1
“You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I Am the Lord your God.
Acts 17:29
Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man.

"A good many Christian-political writers think that Christianity
began going wrong [...] at a very early stage. Now this idea must be used by us to encourage once again the conception of a “historical Jesus” to be found by clearing away later “accretions and perversions” and then to be contrasted with the whole Christian tradition. [...]
"In the first place [these constructions] all tend to direct men’s devotion to something which does not exist, for each “historical Jesus” is unhistorical.
"Our third aim is, by these constructions, to destroy the devotional life.
For the real presence of the Enemy, otherwise experienced by men in prayer and sacrament, we substitute a merely probable, remote, shadowy, and uncouth figure, one who spoke a strange language and died a long time ago. Such an object cannot in fact be worshipped.
Instead of the Creator adored by its creature, you soon have merely a leader acclaimed by a partisan, and finally a distinguished character approved by a judicious historian."

Thank you so much for everything you do, Pastor Mike! I love your humour as much as your thorough biblical teachings ❤️
Thanks for actually spreading truth with no bias for self gain it is refreshing because there are way more that use Jesus or religion as a whole to seek to prove there own personal interests not God's theres :( ❤so refreshing to hear the truth ❤❤❤
Neither are correct, but despite "Colonizer Jesus" being a strawman, it still succeeds in being a little more correct than "Historical Jesus". 🤦🏻♂️
I’ve been waiting a long time for someone to provide a long-form response to this meme. Thanks, Mike.
