Dawn Marie, thanks for your reaction to City Slickers, I knew you would fall in love with Norman. Hope you react to the sequel CITY SLICKERS II : THE LEGEND OF CURLY'S GOLD (1994). The part of Curly was played by Jack Palance, here is Jack being a badass in real life: th-cam.com/video/JC6Y3WEJ0tI/w-d-xo.html
Hi! 😁 Billy Crystal has a ton of movies and cartoon voice overs. ANALYZE THIS and RUNNING SCARED with Gregory Hines! Glorious Reaction!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼🎄
Dawn, you were born in the wrong place & time. Fortunately, that can be fixed. I grew up on a cattle ranch of about 2000 square miles (about 1/15 the size of Scotland) and life there today isn't much different from 150 years ago, save that they now have pickup trucks. So please come to the US and see the West, and live your dream.
Jack Palance won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in this movie. He was about 72, and he was most famous for playing villains throughout his long career. He even played Genghis Khan. Palance went up to the stage to give his acceptance speech, and did one-armed pushups on the stage. His costar in this movie was Billy Crystal, and he was hosting the Oscars that year. For the rest of the night, Billy Crystal made one joke after the other about Jack Palance. It was great, but I guess you had to be there to realize how funny it was.
I saw it, and Billy Crystal's riffing on Jack's feats of strength during the rest of the show was so funny. "He just bungie jumped off the Hollywood sign".
Jack Palance had also been in '94 comedy "Cops & Robbersons" as an FBI team leader in a stake-out in wannabe cool agent Chevy Chase's fam's house... My Dad didn't laugh.
Jack Palance had also been an FBI team leader in '94's "Cops & Robbersons" on a stake-out in wannabe agent Chevy Chase's fam's house, & he was still seriously scary!
@BranDZ7 Hear that big Steve McQueen fan here , he was and always will be the King of Cool i will give credit where credit is due and Jack Palance is a cool cat as well i 'll always remember him as the host of RIPLEY'S IT OR NOT ! and i use to do an impression of him . Cheers.
Such a great movie. When it came out nobody expected it to be a hit, but it's popularity went through the roof! Such a simple, honest movie. Thanks for the review.
There are no reactions out there that equal Dawn. Her tears of joy at the desire to participate in the events of this movie give it a whole new lease of life.
Bruno's best day/worst day monologue is absolutely the high point of this film for me. VERY powerful speech, tremendous performance from a tremendous actor. RIP Bruno Kirby, he left us far too soon.
Yes, Yes Yes. Finally. This is one of the best comedies of the 90s and it has kinda gone unnoticed. It really has heart to it. It's a comedy but it has those moments of humanity- Norman's birth, Curly's death, Ed's story about his father, Phil finally breaking down. It really has heart and I love it for that. The sequel was as well received but I enjoyed it to. Billy Crystal was at the top of his game in this one. Another really good movie of his you HAVE to watch is "Running Scared". It's a buddy cop movie that predates "Lethal Weapon". It's the right amount of serious, funny, and action. And, the chemistry between Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines is amazing. Please consider watching it.
I hadn’t seen this in tears. When Jack Palance went up to accept his Academy Arard he wanted to prove he was healthy by doing one-handed pushups. Great reaction as always and I like the red hair.
9:33 Anyone who has ever worked with cattle has gotten a call at 315 AM from a neighbor or friend telling them their cows are out. So, you get up when the cows decide.
In the sequel "City Slickers 2: Legend of Curly's Gold", Daniel Stern & Billy Cristal return to New Mexico w: SNL's sarcastic Jon Lovitz as Billy's brother, & w: 'Curly's bro...aw, you'll see, Dawn!
Beautiful reaction Dawn. The movie is legendary. Jack Palance was Curly. The Sequel is all about Curly and his twin brother Duke. You have to watch it. It is a wonderful follow up. Cheers Dawn ❤❤❤
I agree with you, Dawn. Spending 2 weeks vacation on a working ranch would be awesome. There are also ranches where you can go and stay and not have to work, but still have access to all of the fun stuff like horses and camping.🤠
Also ‘Norman’ is a type of dairy cow, probably a gurnsey. They do have the cutest faces. The rest of the herd is a mix of angus, charlette, and few others. Norman’s coat looks nothing like the rest of the herd. That coloring is only found with dairy cows.
The real-life animal actor that played Norman, after the movie’s completion, the calf was not sent to a slaughterhouse or put in any danger. Instead, the production ensured that the animal was well cared for.
Jack Palance won the Best Supporiing Actor Oscar for this performance. He'd been nominated twice before. In _Shane_ he played Jack Wilson, the gunfighter in black, one of his Oscar nominations, and for which he won a Laurel Award. He won an Emmy Award for his lead role in the teleplay _Requiem for a Heavyweight_ (1956). If you get around to watching Tim Burton's 1989 _Batman_ you'll run into him again. Yeardley Smith (Nancy, Phil's not pregnant girlfriend) is the voice of Lisa Simpson.
My son and his children own a ranch in Idaho raising Scottish Hyland cattle. My grandchildren maintain the ranch with help. I am so proud of the beautiful work they have accomplished.
When Curly talked about the love of his life... just seeing a beautiful woman's silouette one time? That always got me! Just admiring a natural beauty and being satisfied that he'd experienced a singular exquisite moment. Amazing!!
Jack Palance was the villain in Shane. Such a legendary actor. He won Oscar for City Slickers. Did one arm pushup on stage after he accepted award. What a bad ass legend.
Dawn Marie you have great taste in cowboys! Jack Palance is one of the best actors around and always played the bad ass character! I knew you would fall in luv with Norman the cow (calf). Best part of the movie is the best and worst day stories! Oh... and the bringing in the cattle scene while singing the Bonanza theme song! Thanks Dawn Marie ❤️💛🐄
Liked this movie as a kid when it came out and went with grown-ups, now I'm 40 and it definitely added new dimensions and I see myself a bit in all three of the guys.
To Dawn - Best Reactor Ever! You need to watch City Slickers 2. I think we’ll be seeing it before you know it. Merry Christmas to you and yours, Dawn Marie!
Definitely best movie ever. Billy Crystal was so good back in the day, and was the best thing about the Oscars when he presented a few times. If you haven't seen his movie 'When Harry Met Sally', you really should get on it.
This is my favourite movie :) All my life I planned to go on a cattle drive when I turned 40. Sadly, when 40 hit the world was shut down from covid so I never went. Maybe that's why I still haven't found my smile. Glad you enjoyed it. If you go on a cattle drive, hit me up and I'll go too 😂
Dawn Marie you are an inspiration. You remind me of my mom so much and believe me that is the nicest thing I could say about anyone. My mom grew up on a cattle ranch in Colorado and she loved animals and people too. You are just like her. Thank you so much for your reactions and insights and for sharing this movie I’ve loved since it came out long ago. My mom loved it too, especially lil Norman.
Fantastic reaction, Dawn Marie! It is a great movie. Funny while teaching important lessons. My wife's family had dairy and beef cows when she was growing up. She played with the calves, milked the moms, and fed them every day. She still loves calves, though we can't have them in our suburban home. Don't tell anyone, but for Christmas, our daughter is giving her 1/2 hour with a calf to play with.
"If hate were people I'd be China!!" is one of the best lines in cinema history bar none. Yes that's Daniel Stern from HOME ALONE :D. One of Crystal's finest hours with a hilarious script and an Oscar winning turn by Jack Palance as the crustiest cowboy ever :D. Your reactions to Norman Dawn Marie had me happy laugh/crying :D. Hugs 2 You xoxo
Ya spotted Jake Gyllenhaal, but the 20 yr old girl that told Phil she was pregnant, is Yeardley Smith, the Voice actress for Lisa Simpson. She also played Putter in The Legend of Billy Jean. Billy Jean is played by Helen Slater, Bonnie in this.
What a great movie. I do not understand why people cannot make movies like this anymore. I guess it is a lost practice or something. It is too bad. Thank you for bringing this movie back. Have a good day.😊
Yes, dawn. You can absolutely go on a western cattle drive today. Probably my favorite job was camp cook for a dude ranch. They move their cattle from Wyoming to Montana and back twice a year. I had an 1867 Studebaker chuckwagon with all the goodies. The interesting thing is that 99% of the groceries I had were the same as they would have had in the 1800s, dried beans, whole slabs of bacon, flour, salt, sugar, coffee, cornmeal and such. Everything was cooked over a fire, but the wagon also had a diesel generator that I used for some modern equipment and lighting. An electric mixer can be a great thing. The ranch even had a couple of guys that were full time hunters who provided all the meat for the trip. There were some tough times, injuries, storms, disaster but In 3 seasons I never saw anyone quit. Best job I ever had.
The 3 of them are absolutely how 3 middle-aged office workers act on vacation together. We’re going to the desert as well, for New Years, there just happens to be a city with hotels, resorts and casinos on it. My ‘stupid proposal’ was to see how close to Area 51 we can get, I’ll even cover bail.
You were the giddiest I’ve ever seen you, and that was during the first half before it got really funny. It was a delight to watch you. All of Scotland now knows what to give you for Christmas (Norman).
I'm glad you watched this. So few do and it is worth the watch. Curly won the Academy Award for this role. Wait until you see Norman in #2. It is worth the watch also.
I hadn't seen this movie sonce it first came out in the theater. I enjoy watching it again and your reactions Dawn. It was good pick by your patreans!👍 Now you have to see the sequel 😊!
I remember when this came out I worked in the movie theatre as a teenager selling popcorn. At one point, an elderly married couple stormed out of the theatre demanding their money back due to the "disgusting, dispicable calf scene", claiming something to the effect "there are children in there, for god's sake!". Having grown up on a farm, I really didn't understand what the big deal was. Something else: I know my parents had to grow up faster than I did (in the sense that they had to accept great responsibility at a very young age) but it's still funny to me now to see everyone going through a midlife crisis at reaching 40.
Dawn, you're just a cowgirl at heart. The American southwest is calling you. Curley's finger is also a Zen story. The Zen master holds up a finger and the disciple has that "wake up" moment that resolves all his questions. I suspect that the screenwriter knew the story and made use of it.

Dawn is living this movie before our eyes. Always been an underrated film
Since I first saw this movie, many years ago, the word "Hellooooooo" has been part of my vocabulary haha
Bruno's best day/worst day monologue is absolutely the high point of this film for me. VERY powerful speech, tremendous performance from a tremendous actor. RIP Bruno Kirby, he left us far too soon.
I’ll always remember Bruno Kirby as the young Clemenza in “Godfather Part II”
I think Daniel Sterns tent monologue was equally as good. A great comedy, but some very deep, thoughtful moments.

City slickers is good enough on it's own but watching it with Dawn makes it that much better.
