When Jack Palance accepted his Oscar for this performance in '92, first thing he said was, "Billy Crystal - I crap bigger than him." He went on to do a bunch of one-handed push ups onstage.
Jack Palance (Curly) was famous for dying violently on-screen in 28 different Hollywood movies, so his quiet, peaceful death here was an ironic and comedic homage to his long career. Several funny websites have compiled clips of his death scenes.
Most of us who grew up in the 80s were introduced to Jack Palance as the host of a tv show called Ripley's Believe it, or Not! His grizzled, intimidating voice was the perfect match the the mysterious topics presented in the show. And our parents would go "Hey, that's Jack Palance", and we'd say "WHO's Jack Palance??" etc etc.. Later he popped up again in the Tim Burton/Michael Keaton 'Batman', and then his Oscar winning performance here.
"Support Your Local Sheriff" (1969) starring James Garner, Jack Elam, Walter Brennan, Bruce Dern, Henry Morgan, and Joan Hackett, is a highly rated western spoof that you really need to see someday, when you're in a laughing mood again.
@@MadisonKThamesHey Madison, another Western Comedy that nobody reacts to is The Frisco Kid. It stars Gene Wilder and a fresh off of Star Wars Harrison Ford. I think you would really enjoy it. Hope ya had a great birthday!
The director Ron Underwood wanted to actually film a calfing live, but Billy Crystal told him, "There are some things I won't do for money." They hired a special effects team to create the rear portion of a cow, then pushed a live calf through. Norman was played by MANY different calves as they wanted Norman to stay the same size, and young calves grow too fast for a filming schedule, so pretty much every week was a new Norman.
Maddie will be all smiles watching this one! I definitely know you had a good time with this. Billy Crystal at his finest and ole Jack Palance have a REAL good time! Super Thanks! We all know it's late, but Super Happy Birthday Madison!
A fun older western comedy is Cat Ballou from 1965 - staring a young Jane Fonda in the title role and Lee Marvin, who won an Oscar for Best Actor as a drunken, over the hill, gun fighter in his role as Kid Shelleen.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Very emotional for me on a personal note because it was the last movie I saw in the theater with both my dad and cousin who are no longer with us. I think of them every time I see it.
How many Westerns did Jack Palance (Curly) do in his career? No one knows. This man flew bombers over Germany during WWII, got shot down and his face badly burned. German doctors saved his face, giving him his money-making Hollywood grin.
Happy Bday Madison! This is the PERFECT movie for you this day! I saw this on my first visit to Austin Texas and we went horseback riding and sang the Bonanza theme -- then after I made my friends go see CITY SLICKERS which just opened that day and we could not have loved it more. It's a genuinely good movie with a great script from the writers of SPLASH and PARENTHOOD,. They know how to combine heart with humor and genuine insight. I thought you watched SHANE and would recognize the older Jack Palance, who earned his Oscar. Celebrate yourself, yee-haw!
Happy birthday, Madison! I was a teenager when this came out, and it's always been a favorite. Now, firmly in my mid-life crisis years, it hits differently. I still love it!
The VCR discussion use to be soo hilarious and relatable. So many now-a-days won't know the struggle of teaching someone how to program it to record, set the time, and then tune to channel 3 when you needed to play it back later.
When I was just 7 or 8, my parents dropped my brother and I off at our local Fox Cinema in Riverside, California. Between the two of us, we watched a full-length movie called 'The Mercenary.' At that time, this film had been made in Italy and would be part of a genre of productions known as "Spaghetti Westerns." Within this same motion picture there was a character named, "Curly," who was played by an actor named Jack Pallance! No doubt that the producers of 'City Slickers' were reprising the character of Curly so many years gone by!
Jack Palance won the Oscar for best supporting actor for portraying Curly. I remember seeing him doing 1 armed push ups at the ceremony after he was given the Oscar. He was an excellent actor in everything I watched him in. The chemistry among all of these talented actors was superb. Fantastic movie.
@@clint81 Yes I saw the sequel few times. Very funny, and Norman was a big boy by then. I'm biased, I love John Lovitz, him as replacement for Bruno Kirby didn't bother me at all
I really love this movie and agree it had some scenes of real substance. That scene where Phil fingers the gun and half-mindedly explains why managing a store requires responsibility is heartbreaking.
I don't recall if I first saw this in a theater, or VHS rental, but I loved it that first time. For a time it was a TV classic, then just disappeared from listings.
I myself own a black Stetson "El Patrón." I could be one of those three - a Jewish guy from New Jersey, and I was 40 when the movie was released. The "one finger" meaning-of-life is also a Zen story. The master's disciple asks him how to find true wisdom, the master holds up a finger, and the disciple is enlightened. I'd bet money Billy Crystal knows that story and used it. Mitch's recollection of his day at Yankee Stadium is true - Billy Crystal's father took him to a Yankees game, and Billy got to meet Mickey Mantle and get his autograph. In 1977, he and Mickey were on a talk show. Billy brought along the program Mickey had autographed and asked him to sign it again, which Mickey did. It was a nice moment.
35:09 Not surprised at all that you were tearful - the Bonanza scene gets this 52 year old man every time. The musical stanza building to it is so good.
this is basically a top tier mainstream comedy for that time, #5 in the box office that year, after Beauty and the Beast, T2, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and Silence of the Lambs. relatively wholesome, shades where it gets dark but moments that brighten it back up. just very well written and genuinely funny. the 2nd one is probably not considered as good, but i remember it having some pretty good moments. the story is a little goofy but still fun!
I'm soooooo glad that this video just happened to "randomly" pop up on my page. I had never seen your channel or any video that you had posted before (that I know of), but I watched it primarily because of the movie. It is one of my favorites! Madison mentioned Jake Gyllenhaal was in this and immediately I thought "He is? He must be older than I thought or he must have been a kid" meanwhile she says "So I guess this movie can't be too old." Great reaction, Madison - looks like you really enjoyed it.
Love Jack Palance! His “One Thing” bit in this flick is one of my all time favorite scenes, THE Best description of a fulfilling life path I’ve ever come across❣️
