Another great video. Thanks for sharing. Grew up in the SFO Bay area. Left for Nevada 26 years ago. I don't miss the cities, traffic, people, politics, or gun laws. But I really, really miss California's beauty and outdoor recreation! Nothing like it in this country. If only California could be the way she was in the 80's! From Abalone diving, Salmon/Rock fishing, to hunting. Paradise!
Thank you for taking the time and effort to do this video. Very informative. I was born and raised in Santa Barbara County. My dad referred to those little black tails as suitcase deer.
Me too. Hunted all over, from Sisquoc down to Santa Ynez and over to Jameson lake back in the '80's. It's insane there, now. I went back to Mono hot springs on opening weekend about 15 years ago, and the campground was filled with drunks on quads. We packed up and left.
This video brought back memories for me. I used to Hunt D14 D11 D13 and X10 on occasion, way back 1994-1997. California is the most diverse state with unbound beauty. I left in 2019 for Florida because of the cities turning to hell and the leftest politics! I do miss San Diego and go back when I can to see friends.
What a great video! I love how you put together all of the hunts for the season and that made it interesting even when you didn't see anything or get a buck, which is exactly how most hunts go on pressured land. And what a great wife you have to get out there and do the filming! And then to finish up with a great buck at the last minute just added to an already great experience, well done.
And I love your channel as well. I'll look at a few other channels every now and then just to see what the latest fad in hunting and shooting is this month, but your channel is one of 3 that I actually watch. @@desertdogoutdoors1113
Good job. A public land buck is always a trophy. In the Black Hills. We went to a limited draw about 1988 and that made a huge difference in quality of both mulie and whitetail deer. We were passing up mature 4 by 4 whitetails in the 130 class for heavy beamed 4 and 5 point bucks. Then, for a variety of reasons, we had an explosion in mountain lion population. Now, its getting tough again. No dogs allowed due to intermixed tracts of private land leave us with limited options. Cut a track and hope it goes to a cave, or, try to call them down from the rimrock. Both are about as tough as any hunt I go on. Miserable weather, deep snow, extreme cold, is when they really roam.
Thank you for sharing your 2023 deer season , and congradulation on your success. That was a very nice buck. I shot one just like yours and his teeth were almost all gone.. they told me that's all he was ever going to be just a big old forkie. I've been hunting D11 for around 45 years now and it definitely not the same anymore. I've got quite a few old forkies. Several 3 pointers. I pretty much hunt with a Bow now with the A31 tag so I have till the end of the year. Thanks for sharing your video.
You hit the nail on the head with how beautiful CA can be when you get away from the cities. Im in east San Diego county (D16) and work in a more metro area as a fire/medic. Sometimes at work it seriously bums me out with what is going on in the urban areas. Then during my days off I am lucky enough to be legally hunting in Cleveland 15 minutes from my house, 25 minutes from my house I have huge areas of Cleveland and 60 minutes I got the massive BLM in the deserts. When you take a minute to look at it, it really is a beautiful state in the back country's. Great video, glad you got that buck with the 25-06.......my favorite caliber. The 80grn Barnes will put a whollop on a coyote with case full of H4831sc.
Man I think I met you when I was at a local station asking about road closure into the national forest during turkey season. Over by a certain small airport.
I am originally from Fresno. Now in Florida. I miss the outdoors in California there really is no comparison. But I had to get out due to the political climate. Among other things. But it is a beautiful state
Congratulations Desert Dog! Beautiful CA Buck and well earned. And thank you!! I developed a load for my 25 WSSM using methods from the reloading video and used for a successful Utah Hunt this year
Nice, nice buck, I got one a few years ago in D6, a forked horn, he weighed 189lbs and he was 251/4" wide, you can be proud of that one, he looks like 4 to 4.5 years old, good eating, thanks for sharing.
Congrats on the buck, enjoyed the video very cool to see some beautiful country in California don’t really ever see this aspect of the state, thanks for sharing.
Nice video. Thank you. That was an excellent meat or cull dear. Amazing width but he was never going to have more points I would think. You are a good hunter!
Great video somehow you came up on my feed. I got lucky this year in b zone with a beautiful 3x4 a monster for California general zone. Good hunting fellow jeeper.
Thanks for sharing this hunt. Great looking buck. California does have beautiful country once you get out of the muck. You're fortunate to have a wife helping video. I've hunted D9 before..long ago...didn't persevere like you did and too many hunters.
You stuck with the 92 grain Hammer bullets? You could probably do a short vid on its preformance,, detailing impact velocity, bullet reaction and what not.... Thanks
@@jamesmooney5348yep, I'll do a video of the pros and cons. Even though this deer dropped instantly, there were issues that troubled me. Let's just say, I got the JFK "magic bullet" effect.
Thanks for the video bro! We hunt moose and bear up here on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. If I want deer, I fly to either Kodiak or Prince of Wales island. Whenever we go on vacation, I’m always looking into what’s to hunt nearby. Did you know they have deer on Molokai island in Hawaii? Awesome to hear there’s still good hunting opportunities down in CA! I don’t like crowds much either but have found there are awesome people anywhere. Even in those big cities. Peace.
A great spot to hunt the D3-D6 zone is New Melones lake. Hwy 120 above Sonora, Dodge Ridge is also a great option. Also any area above Copperopolis, and any forest trails near or around Arnold Ca.😉
I wonder how the x-12 deer herd faired this last winter. You have to figure it was hard on them. My group of 60 and 70 year old hunters hope to draw x-12 as a group for one more trip. We won’t be very effective, but it will be fun with hopes of spotting some nice bucks.
Great stuff. Much appreciated. Agree it's a ton if extra work.Even though it's not the type of video that goes mega viral I live watching these as an inexperienced CA hunter with no one in my social network that hunts
If you really want a challenge you can come hunt D16 and I'll gladly trade you spots and hunt some property that holds enough deer to make it "boring" 😂
Great video DD, thanks so much for sharing your experience. Definitely different to my outings here in the UK 🇬🇧. Forgive my ignorance but I take it that you don’t need to wear orange while out hunting.
Most western states don't require orange. California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Idaho, and Alaska don't require it. In Oregon, only children need orange.
Hey Dog. I appreciate your time and effort to make these video's. I was wondering if its possible, make a video and explain the hunting zone and where we can hunt and where we can not. And also explain the zone map Where is the public land? How can we find out?
Download the OnX app to your phone. You will see all the hunting zones, public land, private land, fire and weather alerts. You can zoom in on spots, mark spots, and use it for navigation.
Growing up in CA my dad and I routinely hunted X-1 for many, many, years…and then the rules changed. Hence, before I moved away from the state last year, I hadn’t hunted deer in CA since around 1999-ish. In fact, my last hunt in CA was what used to be called D-2A…the south east side of Mt Shasta…just east of McCloud. It was a great area and we harvested two deer that year. Most people I’ve encountered here in Texas have no idea what Northern California is like…truly God’s country!!!
It's an older Kuiu Venture 1800 I've been using as my day pack for a few years. It holds my glassing gear, and is skinny enough not to interfere with my rifle when it's slung.
Great fork ! My son and i hunted 12 days this year to fill all 4 of our tags . We killed 2 big bucks ( my son got both of those ), and 2 three year old forks . All public land . Busted our butts , and hunted hard . Just a few more deer up here in Northern California though . We might get a chance to get him his first bear if we can get the time . Every hunter should be getting a bear tag , and trying to fill it . They eat the hell out of our fawn deer !

Loved the video.... you earned my sub... love your ideas n thoughts .. Happy Holidays n Great wide buck
California’s geography is the only thing that keeps me here.
People like to hate on Ca because they’ve never been here… we have it all.
Nice video. Thank you. That was an excellent meat or cull dear. Amazing width but he was never going to have more points I would think. You are a good hunter!
Nope, he would never be more than a 2x2. Fantastic size buck for this zone though (which is famous for small bucks).
Wow DD that’s a huge 2x2 👍congratulations
Great Video, Congrats on the Harvest!
Nice looking buck…for California, Congratulations! I myself am mostly a still hunter but will hunt whichever way I need to.
Nice buck and thanks for the video.
