The opening day of dove season was a family tradition. In 1978 freshman football (Los Banos Ca) our coach told us "anyone missing practice tomorrow to go dove hunting will be sorry"! 6 of us spent the rest of the week doing windsprints, it was still worth it. We always hunted safflower fields or cut wheat and barley fields. Nothing fancy, no decoys or expensive clothes just the ol'model 12 16ga and a couple boxes of shells. Oh yeah, a green 5 gallon bucket to sit on.
Great video, you guys crushed it. We went out Saturday night and last night and did well down in imperial valley. Seems like there is a lot of birds down here this year, Saturday night was really good.
Unfortunately I missed dove opener, had carotid artery surgery instead. Not fun. Next Monday is opening day of archery deer and I plan on making that and may do some dove hunting also. I’m after another B&C/P&Y trophy here in Kansas. Good shooting @Desert Dog Outdoors, both you and your wife.
I’m from North Carolina but I love Kansas so much! I’ve done a lot of pheasant hunting in north central Kansas around Downs. What part of the state are you in?
@@NCWoodlandRoamer I say let them badmouth all they want, it affects me not. The amount of game, apart from elk, moose and bear, is enormous. There are trophy whitetails and mule deer here and I have a couple on my wall to attest to that. I usually harvest 6 deer because that is how many I can legally take and they fill one freezer along with doves, pheasants, prairie chickens, and quail. The other freezer is for elk and moose. Kansas is a great state for the hunter.
Nice. Yeah Sunday was very slow by comparison but I managed to still drop 14 birds. Limits on Friday and Saturday and I rested today. Dog brought me a bonus dove in the city on Friday. Think it got clipped by a vehicle but she comes running up with another dove somehow.
I really think your shotcam footage has helped me with my hit rate. Went out for about an hour and a half this morning and got 4 birds with (only😂) 21 shots
Well, it looks like the dove who avoided the red dot tended to live through the day! I like shooting clays but the doves are safe with me in the field, lol! Great video!
DDO, do you guys have white wings up there at all? Here in South Texas we are covered up in them. They are about the size of the Ring Neck that you killed.
We have so many that TPWD started what is known as "special white wing only" for the first 2 weekends in September. Our normal opening day is the 3rd weekend in September. South of I-10 opens later, they claim its for migration purposes.

My wife hit a dove with her truck leaving the field on opening day, lol. Those young-of-the-year doves aren't very smart.

Looks like fun! What size shot do you use for dove ? Im guessing 8 or 9 with a full or tighter choke ?
He’s in commiefornia so he has to use steel shot. #6 is what he says he uses in an older video of his on steel shot for upland hunting.

yep, clays don't instantly change direction, speed up to 55mph, or do barrel rolls when you point a gun at them.

We occasionally get a few, but they are rare this far North.
The White Wings are in the South Eastern portion of California. Someone hunting there will get a mixed bag but it would be mostly Mourning Doves.
