The idea behind the red rings in the heat shrink solder joints are to hermetically seal the silder joint from water etc. I have used similar in the RAF for years to rapir cables ...we use a heat shrink gun with a curved air deflector attachment to give all round heat so you get uniform shrinkage.
Chris keeps me highly amused with his understatements and pragmatism ... "Yeah, it's crept up that one, hasn't it". Another entertaining episode, thanks.
I use those connectors quite a bit, if your joining a bunch of close wires I use a wide blade metal scraper and place it under the wire I’m working on to avoid melting others around it!
The little rings on the ends of your solder sleeves are environmental seals, to keep moisture out of the solder joint. They're great devices, just go easy with how you apply the heat on pvc-jacketed cable as the cable insulation can melt before the solder. I also would tin the wires before fitting the solder sleeve to avoid a dry joint. Very handy little things; I use loads at work (not cars).
Hard to look at the original damaged car to what you guys finished with. Shows how good Chris is at repairing with the tracking so close. Top job guy's, hopefully it will be sold soon and on to a new home.
Heatshrink solder sleeve connectors widely available on ebay. Also recommend Lidl Parkside heat guns when they have them on sale - wide range of temperature control with LCD display and lots of accessory tips so safer to use in tight spaces.
When you make electrical joints, stagger them along the loom so you don't get a big lump when you tape over them. Use self-amalgamating tape as it will survive the weather better.
Hi Rob, great episode as normal. As an aside when in-line splicing multiple cables it’s best practice to stagger the joints if you can it saves ending up with a big lump in the cable and protects against possible issues further down the line.
A really good repair to the Polo, you have made it as good as new. Even the professionals could not detect that it was repaired. Regarding the heat shrink and solder joints, I use them for harness repairs which are exposed to the weather. They are really good if used properly.
not even the pros can tell you have repaired it, just goes to show the quality of the work you guys do !! another one saved . thanks for the content guys
Hello Rob and Chris, I used these 'solder shrinks' every day in my old job repairing looms on cherry pickers. I have even successfully repaired canbus looms with them, never ever had one fail. Much more reliable than soldering and a bit of electrical tape!
Usual perfection with a totally focussed attention to detail. Really tasty parts bill. A really lovely, low miles Polo. Form a queue guys. Glad to see a decent margin coming out of it for you👍😎
Rob one thing to try with the heat shrink solder joints is to stagger them on the loom so you don’t end up with a large bump in the loom under the tape
Damn those parts where expensive full face lifts on rare models have really pushed prices sky high happy for you both that you will be able to make a profit out of it & looks fantastic 👍👍👍
Rob - there’s an attachment that fits on the end of the heat gun that spreads the heat all the way round those connectors, makes life easier when using them, it should have come with the gun. Great job as always
I have not seen those little joiners before and I am getting old! They look like a quick fix certainly if you don't do soldering. I was doing a thumbs up when the lights came on then I laughed realising of course that you can't see me! At least I followed your saying ' let's get involved'. That car is almost like new now with the low mileage and unrecorded. I think that is a fair price and a profit so well done to you both for another top repair. Thanks Rob and Chris for another great video.👍👍
Used to work on RAF Tornado fighters and we used those sorts of solder sleeves on the aircraft wiring, really good for hermetically sealing inline crimps
I’m not a fan of VW’s but this is a nice little car. Top work! It’s cars like this that catch out the man doing it himself on his drive. A bargain can soon go down the pan if you need to load the parts canon.
Hi Rob, I mainly repair these new shape Polos, do you have a trade account with TPS? I find most the genuine parts are pretty reasonable, and cheaper than main dealer, especially things like the fog lights, front wings etc. They also stock the 3pin connectors you needed for pennies. Sometimes not worth the time searching for used parts. Anyway, great video as always 👍
Nice and easy end to this one. Love the heat shrink for the wiring, will certainly look for them when I need to do wiring again. At least you managed to keep your hands warm doing that 😂 what a cracking little runabout 👍🏻
Mine included - been waiting 3 weeks for a merc tyre valve repair kit just so I can fit a tpms sensor with new seals because apparently merc haven’t got stock of them - they sell the valve without the fitting kit which is daft! This is on top of other parts I’m waiting for that haven’t arrived for 3 or more weeks! Nightmare!
Great to see before & after at the end. I must add when a garage does the tracking make sure the device on the steering wheel is fitted on to make sure the steering is straight. I had mine done once and it was all in the green on the screen like in this video, but there was no device on the steering wheel and when i drove away after he finished, the steering wheel was slightly to the left when going in a straight line. I had to go back to get it redone and he got it right the next time round.
Got the exact same connector ripped off on mine, will try them solder joints!! Also that radiator support grill cost me £20.45 before VAT from TPS, shopped around for most other parts, even got the bonnet in colour £130! 😂
Rob, when mentioning Chris’ Instagram you should mention an outrageous thing Chris MIGHT get up to, (a bit like Top Gear did with the Stig), eg hang gliding naked down Snowdon, being a magicians assistant, or talking about being a Scrabble grand master, etc. Could be a fun way to end each video. Well done on the car - looks good.
Those connectors are great - Renault used to sell them in the crank sensor repair kits. And those VW Center caps - I too bought some off eBay and last week tried to fit them - very tight!!
Evening Guys. What a lovely Polo. I was trying to add up as you were talking doing the number and was as shocked 😮 as you both were. But a fantastic end result and a lovely little car for someone’s Christmas 🎄present 😄
I'm not a fan of those solder seal connectors, they are not the best. Tried using them for a while but even when taking extra care to join the two wires as neatly and accurately as possible, moisture can still get in there and the connection can corrode and fail after a year or two. I find the best solution is to solder, heat shrink and then seal it all with a piece of amalgamating silicon tape. It actually doesn't take any longer than messing around with those things.
been using that things for years they are prety good usually but not always...nyway you have not done that quite right all be it should be fine....next time keep heating the ends of the sleeves til they close fully onto the wire too but you defo had the right idea starting with the centre 1st so the solder melts 1st but keep going til the tips of the sleeves at each end fully close too
Very nice results gents, and a good series, albeit an expensive one. You will still come out with a good profit, and someone will get a very nice car. Always enjoy your projects and I thank you for keeping us entertained and engaged.
It turned out nice in the end, but you had a challenging, not to mention expensive hill to climb to get there. Hopefully, you will get the money you are asking for the restored and honour will be served. It turned out to be a bigger gamble than expected one way and another, but if anyone could turn it round, you two could achieve the right result.
Wow £6K parts, was thinking £3k as you went through them, quickly mounts up BUT this will fly of your shelf, it looks superb and as usual the effort you two put into your work shows, it will be great for the next owner, thanks guys!👍👍👍
Another great video. Car vertical have really ramped their prices up. The last time I used them to do checks just over a year ago it was around 7 quid per report, now it's close to 20 quid!
That Polo was a parts nightmare Rob! But you came out on the right side. Royal Mail are a disaster. I switched broadband supplier on the 23rd November. They sent my new fibre router out on the 30th on a 48 hr tracked service. The switch was scheduled for today (7th) but the router has not arrived. So I am now using my 'phone as a 4G hub (as the old supplier has terminated their service of course) after buying a Wifi dongle until the Royal Mail decide to do their jobs.
Top work on the VW POLO guys. The car looks like a totally different car you would never know if it was ever involved in an accident. The car looks like a beautiful car lads well done guys you’ve earned small profit out that car. Can’t spot a fault with that car so far. Rob Your going to do some snagging in that car don’t go to crazy Rob 😂 see you on Friday.
Another great video lads, Things don’t be long adding up, I had a similar experience with a Mini recently, The price & availability of dealer parts is shocking! Keep up the great work, Happy Christmas from Ireland.
Another one completed to your usual high standards with nothing left to chance. The parts list was considerable and expensive for what didn't seem like a huge amount of damage. As you say the problem was it was the latest model and IMO VAG parts seem very expensive - the OEM market follow the dealers in terms of prices I guess. Anyway its now an immaculate, late, low mileage Polo which I'm sure will soon find a buyer at that price. By my reckoning you just have one more Polo to go!
Really pleased you have got that one finished it Looks like new Well done Rob with the solder connection's you can buy them to fit all sizes and if you don't have heat a disposable lighter work's just as good 👍
Lovely car guys. The before and after pics show the amount of effort you both put into repairing the vehicle. It’s still a cheap car. Low mileage, well sorted, and in lovely condition. Nice one gents, and an interesting series of videos. The body repairs by Chris were a real pleasure to watch. Someone will get a very nice little car. Cheers gents….
Hi Rob & Chris, I've been using those connectors for a couple of years, you're right they're brilliant, never given me any problems.
The tracking showed how perfectly the car was rebuilt! Top jobs lads
I use those connectors quite a bit, if your joining a bunch of close wires
I use a wide blade metal scraper and place it under the wire I’m working on to avoid melting others around it!

Hi chris, we use those solder splices in the aerospace industry. I use them daily. Good enough for a typhoon great for a polo. Dazza
When you make electrical joints, stagger them along the loom so you don't get a big lump when you tape over them. Use self-amalgamating tape as it will survive the weather better.
I am always astounded by you in-depth knowledge of salvage . Best channel on TH-cam by far.
Hi Rob, great episode as normal. As an aside when in-line splicing multiple cables it’s best practice to stagger the joints if you can it saves ending up with a big lump in the cable and protects against possible issues further down the line.

thanks for the content guys
Great to see the before picys again as it's easy to forget how bad some of the cars are. Great job gents.
Those red rings in the heatshrink solder is adhesive. It makes the connection watertight. Good stuff with the polo
Glad to see a decent margin coming out of it for you👍😎
yeah those little solder heatshrink things work well
I use those connectors all the time, they are brilliant
Rob one thing to try with the heat shrink solder joints is to stagger them on the loom so you don’t end up with a large bump in the loom under the tape
Damn those parts where expensive full face lifts on rare models have really pushed prices sky high happy for you both that you will be able to make a profit out of it & looks fantastic 👍👍👍
I used those heat shrink solder connections 43 years ago in the RAF. So long as both ends are tinned they work a treat.
Rob and Chris, great work! Especially those solder heat shrink! Always a pleasure watching!
Lovely workmanship again guys
Rob - there’s an attachment that fits on the end of the heat gun that spreads the heat all the way round those connectors, makes life easier when using them, it should have come with the gun. Great job as always

congrants ,we do not miss any of your videos ,we are so far from you ,in Uruguay south america ,regards
I have been using those solder fittings for years,I always stagger the repair, but they are very good, get mine from RS Northampton
Good evening Rob and Chris, what a transformation.
That was one hell of a parts list.
Thank you for taking the time to upload another video. Ged.
I wondered if those easy solder joints were any good. Now I know. Thanks guys. Superb job as usual.
I’m not a fan of VW’s but this is a nice little car. Top work! It’s cars like this that catch out the man doing it himself on his drive. A bargain can soon go down the pan if you need to load the parts canon.
Lovely job Guys parts are costly would you do another one 👍
Great example of you guys going the extra mile to get the right parts for a project. Great stuff.
Cars like new guys, professional repair and rebuild as always,no corners cut in this garage, well done guys
The solder joint repair things are brilliant I’ve used them so many times, another good video and another good car, well done 🍺🍺
No bodge with these guys just a proper job well done lads.
Hi Rob, I mainly repair these new shape Polos, do you have a trade account with TPS? I find most the genuine parts are pretty reasonable, and cheaper than main dealer, especially things like the fog lights, front wings etc. They also stock the 3pin connectors you needed for pennies.

Anyway, great video as always 👍
Nice and easy end to this one. Love the heat shrink for the wiring, will certainly look for them when I need to do wiring again. At least you managed to keep your hands warm doing that 😂 what a cracking little runabout 👍🏻
Another cracking job lads! That car's gonna make someone very happy.
Haha the little cheeky grin when walking to front of car that’s the best feeling when you get things fixed 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That will make someone a nice little car, well done lovely job as always.
We feel your pain, the post is ridiculous at the moment. Its killing small businesses.
Mine included - been waiting 3 weeks for a merc tyre valve repair kit just so I can fit a tpms sensor with new seals because apparently merc haven’t got stock of them - they sell the valve without the fitting kit which is daft!

The parts total escalated quickly 😮
Still a cheap enough thing at £9k though, another quality repair 👌
Thanks for the mention Rob, those connectors are ace! Andy.
Lol it wasn’t you bud
Got the exact same connector ripped off on mine, will try them solder joints!! Also that radiator support grill cost me £20.45 before VAT from TPS, shopped around for most other parts, even got the bonnet in colour £130! 😂

Another cracking video guys. The Polo came out well, says enough when your tyre guy made those positive comments. Looking forward to the next one!
The Polo looks like brand new Rob!
Quality rebuild as always Rob,we never doubt your work! :D
Great wk as always Rob & Chris.
Well done Rob, you got stuck in on this one.
I used the heat shrink connectors on my internal van lights 2 years ago no problem as yet
Same I did a Jcw mini 2017 and it was crazy the cost of parts was 2x the cost of the car never again lol you have to be so careful with newer stuff
Another great job guys - and the mics are working well at last 😊
I'm not a fan of those solder seal connectors, they are not the best. Those heat shrink solder sleeves are mustard! I find the wind proof lighters work as well as a heat gun. Great to see it all back together.
been using that things for years they are prety good usually but not always...nyway you have not done that quite right all be it should be fine....next time keep heating the ends of the sleeves til they close fully onto the wire too but you defo had the right idea starting with the centre 1st so the solder melts 1st but keep going til the tips of the sleeves at each end fully close too
They was completely sealed bud
Very nice results gents, and a good series, albeit an expensive one. You will still come out with a good profit, and someone will get a very nice car.
Always enjoy your projects and I thank you for keeping us entertained and engaged.
I've used those electrical connectors when refurbing my son's Westfield. Brilliant idea. Quick, easy and simple.
Another one saved and expertly done ! 👍
Well done guys. Always nice to see a car returned to MINT condition, especially a POLO. 😁😁
Lovely job. Expensive but well worth it. Cheers, Bob
Microphone sounded epic at the end!!!
Fantastic. So good the solder connectors .
That picture of when you bought it; nasty!.
Nice car, now.
Another great turn around guys, cracking little Polo all sorted for someone to grab a quality car at a bargain price 🙌
Good job , love this shape of polo had a reef blue r-line cracking car
You're like a well-oiled machine, Rob. Nice work on this one.
Another Cracking Job Rob and Chris.
Wow £6K parts, was thinking £3k as you went through them, quickly mounts up BUT this will fly of your shelf, it looks superb and as usual the effort you two put into your work shows, it will be great for the next owner, thanks guys!👍👍👍
Those connectors are brilliant and waterproof. The red ring at each end is a sealant adhesive . Used in aircraft many years ago .
Been using those heat shrink solder joints for 10 years👍🏻
Another one sorted.Nice wee profit too.On to the next one.
I've been working on bikes and cars for many years now. What you guys do is incredible, much respect from me here in Lincolnshire.
Prices now are just crazy . Still yet another great little car out the done lads . Well done thank you for another great video .
It is amazing how all the small amounts add up to one big one
That is a lot of money but at least a profit still in it 👍👍
Look at how lovely this turned out definitely a win 👀
We had those solder joints at Citroën back in the 90's, there should be an heat gun nozzle adapter available for those connectors too mate 😊
Another great video. Car vertical have really ramped their prices up. The last time I used them to do checks just over a year ago it was around 7 quid per report, now it's close to 20 quid!

Those heat shrink things look really cool, thanks for sharing that :)
Aside from the Solder joins have a look for waterproof heat shrink. Many sizes for many needs!
Top work on the VW POLO guys. The car looks like a totally different car you would never know if it was ever involved in an accident. The car looks like a beautiful car lads well done guys you’ve earned small profit out that car. Can’t spot a fault with that car so far. Rob Your going to do some snagging in that car don’t go to crazy Rob 😂 see you on Friday.
i had often wondered how effective them solder sleeves were Rob,now i have seen them in action i have to get some from screwfix :) :)
Had my little kit of assorted from Lidl’s
Use them cable joiners all the time , There brilliant and waterproof too although I usually put heat shrink ether side too 🤙🏼. Great vid as always
Where could I get these from please
@@reaganstanislas3688 Amazon mate .
Another great video lads, Things don’t be long adding up, I had a similar experience with a Mini recently, The price & availability of dealer parts is shocking! Keep up the great work, Happy Christmas from Ireland.
Clever fix great job Rob and Chris, great work
you've both done it again what a lovely polo absolutely immaculate keep it up guys

great - might have been a bit troublesome but a nice little car at the end of it all Rob !
Lovely car guys. The before and after pics show the amount of effort you both put into repairing the vehicle.

Nice motor, great job, great video chaps.
Those new mics are the dogs danglees... Thank you!
Just brilliant work yet again from the dynamic duo. Well done guys. 👍👍👍👍👍
Another entertaining video!! The polo lives to fight another day, thanks to you guys !!
A fantastic cheap new polo !!
