@@paulwoodford1984 Nope it was the 28th of February 1998, the day after they finished filming the 3rd series. Frank Kelly who played Father Jack died exactly 18 years later in 2016 on the same date...Sorry I've just seen you say it was 1998.
The 90s were just such a great time to be alive. I miss them terribly. Everything was about fun and nobody took anything too seriously.

@@michaelhouston551 No. The 70s were a time of abject poverty in this country (I live in the UK.) The 80s were a time of recession and strife for many people. The 90s while by no means economically utopian for many people I'm sure, were a time of great resurgence in positivity for this country. We had Brit Pop, we had Cool Brittania, we had everything going well for the majority and people were largely happy and prosperous. That's the majority view. I'm not being rose tinted I'm speaking comparatively on the whole between today and the 90s. We live in a far bleaker, smaller, less liberated world today than we did in the 90s. Most people who were there and are here now would agree with that. Apart from the Karen's of course. They were probably complaining then and complaining even more now!
@@brettpritchard265, not just Brit pop, we had rave culture, the last great revolution that many teenagers were a part of that was something special , techno music has taken a resurgence in the last decade but the parties are not the same as back then

He was an absolute legend. No matter how many times I watch Farther Ted it still makes me laugh. One of the best comedies of all time.

The 90s was the last true decade. Definable by its music, TV, fashion, art, club scene, youth culture etc. When young people could become whatever they wanted and we all mucked in and laughed together.
You know some people say those of us who look on the 90's in such a highly regarded way have rose tinted glasses. ......they're wrong. If you were there... you know. It was bloody brilliant!
The last great decade. It has been all downhill since the 90s.

Tell me about it. I loved the mid to late 90s, met the love of my life, dream job, loads of mates, parties, fun times. England felt confident again, and I remember thinking "we're in a good place now, things are just going to get better and better"

Father Ted is timeless, I think it’s beyond a golden classic.
Its awful to know that it wasn't long after this interview that he died. So very sad. He had finally become a big star, would have gone on to do great things I'm sure.
This episode aired in November 1997, just 3 months before Dermot died at the young age of 45. What a shame he didn’t get to write that book, or bless us with more of his comedy.
I still love Father Ted, still watch the dvd’s and Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without watching A Christmassy Ted with a beer.

I'm welling up watching this, for the fact that Dermot Morgan was taken from us so soon, for my own lost youth, and for the 1990s - the last time England was a fun, confident place to live in. We're in such a sorry state now it doesn't bear thinking about...

What a great person. Was really saddened when Dermot passed away in 1998. A gentleman that inspired many a person. R.I.P. Dermot.
One of the people who sculpted my childhood, along with Richie and Eddie. Sadly missed - but we are so lucky to always have Ted
I saw him with my uncle in Clonmel. He was brilliant. His impressions of Irish politicians from Michael Lowry to Charlie Haughey were something else. His Scrap Saturday radio programme was epic.
What a genuinely great guy he was. Such a sad loss.

Absolutely loved Father ted when i was growing up. And was probably the first time i felt sad a tv figure died. What a legend.
Interviews had a different feel to them back in the 1990s. More real somehow
I remember my mother (who herself sadly passed last year) calling to my bedroom when I and my Brother were 11 and 12 respectively and telling us that Dermot died. We were stunned, as an Irish family we adored Fr. Ted, it felt like a part of the new era for the country from the mid 90s to the 00s and Dermot's portrayal of Ted was wonderful. I can't believe its been 25 years since Dermot passed, he had such great things ahead of him. RIP
Sadly, since Dermot died it's been downhill for both England and Ireland.

The Republic of Ireland v Belgium match that Dermot and Chris are talking about took place in Brussels on 15th November, 1997. Ireland lost 2-1, losing 3-2 on aggregate and failing to qualify for the 1998 world cup in France. Dermot died from a Heart-Attack on 28th February, 1998, which means after this interview, he passed away 3 months later
The fact they are wearing poppies shows that this interview is late October or early November
He was absolutely right about the young Irish players bubbling under and that they'd break through in time - we qualified for the 2002 World Cup.

Just occurred to me, I’ve never seen him as himself and not as father ted. It’s so odd to see him just be Dermot Morgan. What a guy.
He was a naturally funny and very talented person, as well as being really likeable. His passing was such a tragic loss. He was and still is so loved by so many.

There are so many great sit-coms from Dad's Army, Porridge, Some Mother's Do Ave Em etc but Father Ted might very well be the one with the most laugh out loud moments of any of them. It's definitely in the top five comedy shows of all time. Truly great!

Such a shame about Dermot,but apparently he never stopped working..he had no off switch..he had this relentless drive too keep working all the time..I miss him as do many others,a lovely talented guy who will always be remembered.
He died exactly one week before my brother died (aged 17) and they both had unbelievably similar dry wit.

Can remember the day he died. Was so shocked to the core. Poor guy taken way, way too soon.
I'm not a religious man but I reckon Saint Peter turned to God and said "Jeez Mick dis goy's hilarious, get him up here pronto!". Dermot is awesome.

Learn from Dermot's mistakes he'll have wanted that.Take time off work, relax and don't drink.
Less than one year after he appeared on this show, he would go on to suffer a massive heart attack…

He died the following year, on my birthday, it was such a shock, poor man he wasn't very old. I wonder what he would have gone on to do if things has been different - weirdly father jack died on the same day years later. RIP father Ted

You and I both. This was the year of the dirty dozen, he and Gazza got naked for comic relief. That was the best night of TV I ever saw. Was at uni, watched it with a bunch of mates. I would go back to these days with all three wishes.

it's hard to try to add 25 years to this man's life to picture what he might look like now or how he might react to our current internet culture now. I hope that 25 years from now people would still love to get to know his stand up and acting roles and take inspiration from them, in that capacity he will never die if that is the case

The 90s - the truly last great decade. Well, up until about 2008. Since 2010, everything gone to sh*t. RIP to a comedic legend.
9/11 was the end of the party. I realised within hours that things would never be the same and only get much, much darker.

It's very sad that he passed so young but it's great to see him here as we remember him and as he will always be remembered. To this day, it's impossible to watch any episode of father Ted without crying with laughter, despite probably seeing said episode at least 20 times previously ❤

My youngest daughter Áine was born in March 1995 so she watched Fr. Ted as a baby with her two older sisters. She is a Primary School Teacher now at 28 and still is a massive fan of Fr. Ted. It is so easy to relate funny incidents in life to Fr. Ted. Great comedy.
There are comedians and there are naturally funny people. Derrmot didn't have to try. He was a great personality, with brilliant chemistry and I enjoyed every episode of Father Ted. Before PC ruined talent, the 90's was a very good time for self expression, experimentation and TV innovation. Comedy is the best anti depressant. RIP.
There was incredible comedy on TV week in, week out in the 90s. There were evenings during the week when you knew various comedy shows would be airing on BBC, channel 4 etc.

90s was a perfect time for freedom of speech, expression, and true liberal values. I took it all for granted, never thought we'd decline as quickly as we have.

If you're 34 now you must have only been about 8. I was and still am a massive FT fan (visited the house this year for my 40th) and watched TFI a lot too but missed this, so this is a real treat!

Watched this the night it aired, thanks for making me feel so old.
My English and Latin teacher, rehashed his 'Live Mike' work every Monday morning in the first 5 or 10 minutes of Class
This takes me back to a time when TV was good. I've no idea what it's like now as I stopped watching it about 10 years ago and cancelled my license.
I loved him in Father Ted. Top man. I grew up with priest house a few doors away. So it was brilliant to see it sent up.
His eyebrows were 20 years younger than him ❤️

Father Ted I'd rate as maybe the best comedy show ever. It is absolutely timeless. It's up there with the greats and maybe I'm biased but I'd have no problems with it being number one

Not that it really matter but it was just a little over 3 months. It was one day shy of 16 weeks to the day of that episode being aired. He smoked heavy and lived a stressful life. His lifestyle caught up with him in the end.
This was my childhood , I was only 8 or 9 when he passed away and here in Ireland it really was a huge deal , but Father Ted is on T.V to this very day

I would have watched this when it aired and what surprises me now is the rapid fire speed of the interview, like its a race. I don't remember it that way. Its almost a perfect interview format for the TikTok generation. 8 mins might be too long for them though.

He played fr Ted just brilliantly in an all time classic show. Passing away just as the 3rd series finished was just tragic. He would have been a legend for the rest of his life continuing to this day.
He died one day after recording the series' final episode, he suffered a heart attack while hosting a dinner party at his home 💔
It was lucky that it happened after the final episode. Sad but he left a phenomenally piece of work

Still sad the way he died so suddenly, it seems unlikely in the world of sitcoms, that this type of thing would ever happen again. Well 25 years have passed since the show ended.
Tommy Tiernan said the amount of takes of the Theme From Shaft may not have helped.
That said he obviously had a defect that would have impacted sooner or later
@@zanussidish5685 oh yes I heard the repeated dance moves to Shaft, that Dermot Morgan had to do with Tommy Tiernan, as he kept flubbing his lines was something he opened up about in a 2009 interview, with thinking that this contributed to the fatal heart attack the next day, after the last episode was filmed. The start of this scene was hilarious, though as an excited Father Ted has just heard from Father Buzz Cagney, that him going to America is official. So when Father Kevin then wants to talk to Ted, he is just simply unable to contain himself, try as he might listen to Kevin. “Ted, could I talk to you for a moment?”
“Sure”.
“I uh… I, I, I, I just want to thank you for talking me off the ledge the other day. It was very good of you. I can’t pretend I’m any happier I’m afraid. The world still seems a dark, unpleasant place”.
“Yes! I have to get all of my stuff brought over, but that won’t be a problem. Ah, Kevin, hello. What can I do for you?” All of this carried on with Ted not having his mind on what Kevin is saying to him, up until Ted says, “Hold on, Kevin. Do you mind if I put on some music?” It’s just pure comedy gold!

@@natmanprime4295 Yes, I remember once hearing an interview with Ardal O'Hanlon saying he definitely looked unwell around the time Father Ted was coming to an end. Ardal’s father (who was a doctor) also noted that Dermot looked ill and should probably get checked out.
If his hair hadn’t gone grey early he would’ve looked much younger.
Interestingly a severe copper deficiency can lead to an aneurysm/stroke one sign of it is tons of grey hair early in life ..... anyway rip
