    Folks over at Nunomo sent me their new groovebox QUN MK2 to try out and after a few weeks of testing, I thought I'd share a few sounds and my thoughts on it.

    This looks dope. It was a good move to make the only knob on the thing as large as possible. I love Volcas and the NTS-1, but turning those tiny knobs is not great.

    $185USD! It is true!! But as I was about to press add to cart, I thought about the room full of gear I have almost to the ceiling and the thought "GAS" came to mind.. In my current predicament, do I really need another synth?? I clicked off the site sadly.. I have gear that does what this synth does and more and I already own it so I do not have to pay yet again for another synth. Oh! It is nice and it is small and I like it lol! But... My Yamaha RS7000 with RM1x and AN200 and DX200 and Microfreak, and Uno Synth, and Venom, and and and!! You get my meaning now lol

    This tiny beast is a complete no-brainer addition to any rig. (edit: I ordered mine a month ago. Hopefully it'll be making cool granular noises soon, along with ZOIA!)

      @@feronous8207 Did. Didn't wait long either. Love mine. some very cool tools in a tiny package. I slipped a rear Tamiya car tire over the stock knob. Makes single finger control easy, and comfortable, and adds a cool look, if you ask me. . What's better on an amazing tiny synthesizer, created by a Japanese guy, than a Tamiya car tire for a knob? 😁 Made perfect sense to me. I have a bunch of parts. I've custom modified, and painted like 9 Beak Spiders. I considered a neon tire for the knob, but went with traditional black.

      I have a Zoia and, in spite of the fact that I wanna ultimately move to an all (free) software rig, I'm leaning towards getting a second one down the road (maybe even a Zebu if I wanna lose my mind with some Eurorack bullshit).
      What stuff does the Qun do that the Zoia doesn't, tho? I'm not a wealthy man. I guess I don't really know if the Zoia can do FM synth at all, but how does the Qun's granular and sample manipulation compare?

      well even a 32 GB usb stick is tiny enough and is possible to hold tons of samples, if someone would like it.
      many old wavetable synthesizer PCI boards were small as well )

    Thanks for a great video. I have a Korg Electribe 2 Sampler (red version). Is the Qun Mk2 more advanced and easier to use or are they just completely different and incomparable? I'd appreciate your opinion. Please keep up the good work.

    Ooh la la! Can you do the granular processing on incoming audio or only onboard sampled presets? I would buy it simply for that alone.

      I don't think it processes live input directly to granular, but I think once sampled it can be chosen by the granular engine.
      I might be wrong. Mine arrives later today according to ups

    200 bucks?! What?! That's insane. Has no business being as good of a bang-to-buck ratio as it is. Like the model cycles or PO-33. An absolute value proposition.

      This is a great comment. It's a good reminder that most of us don't really need a new synth and learning to use what we already have is usually more rewarding and also yields better musical outcomes in the long term.

    Can you use Novation Launch Control XL MK2 to control it - bigger knobs?

      You could maybe through Ableton or another DAW, but that controller doesn't have a MIDI out so it can't be used directly with QUN (or any other hardware synth).

      yeah, M8 is 13cm x 9cm whereas Qun is 9.5cm x 8cm.

      Micro USB if I remember the name correctly? Not the modern symmetric-ass USB-C but not the ancient large one either.

      the drums on this video are samples, but you can synthesize drum sounds with the built-in sound engines. It comes with stock presets for at least kicks, snares, claps, hi-hats and crashes if I remember correctly.

      haha, I've gotten into a 3D modeling rabbit hole, which has taken the time I've typically spent making videos.
      to your question, I guess it depends on what you expect of it. after all, it's a relatively cheap device with a lot of features and a small footprint, so that comes inevitably with a lot of button combos and (at least first) a semi-confusing user interface. the build quality is actually surprisingly nice and it feels sturdy compared to many other cheap synth devices.

    Wow! They could add 4 analog voices (out of CEM clone chips), make it 100-150$ more expensive and beat Analog Four in the most of moments! The only big con (beside my love to analog sources) that I see here is a lack of knobs and buttons! Too spartan :)

      @@roryjineffect yep, but no analog oscillators - bad for me :) As an affordable FX box with a granular engine - pretty neat!
      But as I've started to dig Raspberry Pi theme then I want to finish it and make my own FX box.
      Pitty that I've didn't knew about this QUN before I was ordering my RPi stuff ))
