One thing I really like about the Penguin black spines is that they lay flat really well and get a good spine crease. I never read the introduction either. I was really disappointed that Jane Eyre was spoilt for me by reading the intro so I learnt to avoid them.

The Penguin books also have really great annotations for classic works so can get more out of it without having to look everything up yourself and let you know a reference is there if you don't notice.

I think the introductions are usually very well-written; they encapsulate the emotions one feels while reading the novel in words that do them justice. But, yes, you are right - it is better to read them after finishing the novel.

I literally have been debating for the past few days to pick an edition for my classics: your video come just when needed!

Thank you for this. I love hearing about various classic editions. Yes, that's my biggest gripe with the Penguin Clothbounds and the reason I am averse to getting them, due to their durability (and I heard they're tightly bound) and that Everyman's Library (my favorite edition) are about the same price (sometimes cheaper) with high quality. But of course I understand it comes down to taste and some may prefer the Penguin Clothbound due preferring it's aesthetic.

I was not aware of so many different collector's editions. Thank you for awakening me to such interesting collectibles.

Best wishes with your reading. I was surprised at how different content can be. If you are getting Machiavelli's The Prince I would recommend the Penguin Classics edition. For Sun Tzu's Art of War , the Wordsworth Classics edition. Both are beautifully translated, almost poetic. Just my opinion of course.

I collect classic books as well. I really enjoy both the Oxford and Pengiun classics, especially when they are all with each other on the shelf, with the contrasting black and white spines. I agree with what you said about some of the oxford covers not really matching up with the story they are on though most of them are all right. Great video though really enjoyed it.

I find the text size, spacing, and font vary slightly in the Penguin classics editions, and even more so with the Modern Classics line. I think it has to do with the manuscript and previous work editions that are available to them. Especially if something is not a newer release, updated edition, new translation, etc. I think it may just be a copy of a previous release.

Always been a fan of Readers Digest, I really like the way the book title is displayed on the spine.

You totally nailed it with reading being a sensory experience. This was an excellent idea for a video and I was introduced to two editions I hadn't seen before: Barnes and Noble, and whatever the Virginia Wolf edition was. Those look so nice. I really enjoy the Clothbound Classics, although beware that some of the design can rub off. I read Crime and Punishment in December and the red markings came off. I'm glad you covered this. Something else to consider in classic editions where foreign classics are concerned is the translator. I read a lot of Russian literature, and even the same editions might have different translators. And then there's size - I have two Penguin Twentieth Century Classics of Virginia Wolf -- Mrs Dalloway is smaller than The Voyage Out, and it's kind of annoying. And Chekhov's Plays in Penguin Classics black is smaller than the same edition of Chekhov's Lady with the Lapdog and Other Stories.

really love such detailed discussions, especially when you show the typography. Although a closer look at the fonts would've been great

Thanks for this! Just ordered a word cloud collection of horror stories for Halloween! Also a huge fan on the Wordsworth classic editions in hardback. They have very charming simple paintings on the cover (Moby Dick especially has my heart)

I love all of the collections you’ve shown here! I own a few books from those as well except the Oxford ones but it’s definitely in my radar.
I have to say however that I stopped buying the Clothbound classics because the hardcover print was falling off really bad in some books more than others even though I treat my books with a lot of care so I just opted for other editions instead.

Some of the penguin classics are breath taking-ly beautiful and some are appallingly ugly, like their edition for Dracula. I personally prefer the MacMillan Collector's Library edition of Dracula but I don't like how every book in their collection is basically cookie cutter except the bottom of the covers (I get it's a collection but it's just my opinion) but I hate literally all other editions of Dracula I've seen so far.
