I totally agree with you with the 1st book (Lord of the Flies). It didn’t excite me, I couldn’t relate with the main character and I could only manage half of the book. For Charles Dickens, if you can’t even enjoy Great Expectations then I wouldn’t even attempt to read a Tale of Two Cities (Only able to read about 10 pages.) Another ‘classic’ I would avoid like the plague is To Kill a Mockingbird. I was able to finish the whole book but it was so damn boring.

Try T he Way of All Flesh - substantial length, but not a word of it bores you: an interest in the 19th century helps, but even without that, it reads well: and, if you like anti-heroes, the character of the parson is as anti-heroic as you can get. Horrible man, but brilliantly drawn. Mind you, there are hundred of classic novels: I'm hoping to live long enough to read all of them; I just recently finished War and Peace, in a rather dated edition - the translator worked hard, ruining her eyesight in the process, but it's very much of the time in which it was done; whereas the novel is said to be (wish I could read Russian) much more lively. I did get very fed up with Natasha, be it said; I think Tolstoy, like Dickens, was sentimental about women - in different ways. But I'm having to turn you off now, because I haven't read the Count of Monte Cristo yet! Everyone has but me - but I don't want you giving away too much of it!

You totally nailed it with reading being a sensory experience. This was an excellent idea for a video and I was introduced to two editions I hadn't seen before: Barnes and Noble, and whatever the Virginia Wolf edition was. Those look so nice. I really enjoy the Clothbound Classics, although beware that some of the design can rub off. I read Crime and Punishment in December and the red markings came off. I'm glad you covered this. Something else to consider in classic editions where foreign classics are concerned is the translator. I read a lot of Russian literature, and even the same editions might have different translators. And then there's size - I have two Penguin Twentieth Century Classics of Virginia Wolf -- Mrs Dalloway is smaller than The Voyage Out, and it's kind of annoying. And Chekhov's Plays in Penguin Classics black is smaller than the same edition of Chekhov's Lady with the Lapdog and Other Stories.

I should have been the target audience for Lord of the Flies. I love dystopia, love Hunger Games type stories. I hated this. I think I reviewed it too charitably, the more I think on it the more I dislike it.

January was amazing for reading. Found my groove back last year by changing a little what I read. I began reading through a list of the western canon last year and found I have been leaning to heavy towards YA because of watching booktube and getting enamoured of pretty bookcovers when really I’m not the target audience at all with my 38 years growing up picking from my parents shelves. So while I can still enjoy a YA or too I have found it deeply satisfying having most of my books be clsssics, history and such now. Most of all my growing interest in greece, rome and egypt. Looking forward to diving into Hesiod soon and I’m enjoying my current read of the Oresteia. So my January was 13 books which is far and beyond my earlier average which was between 6 and 9. For February probably 12 I think.

I love wolves that’s why I read White Fang and I agree with you. It was so difficult to read about this poor animal being mistreated. Jack London was an animal rights activist so I understand the point he was trying to make but there was just too much detail for me to like the book or read it again.

Best wishes with your reading. I was surprised at how different content can be. If you are getting Machiavelli's The Prince I would recommend the Penguin Classics edition. For Sun Tzu's Art of War , the Wordsworth Classics edition. Both are beautifully translated, almost poetic. Just my opinion of course.

Of the books you mentioned, I only read Tess and I loved it. I guess it really depends on whether or not you like tragic stories because I do and I think the tragedy was what I liked in Tess. How a young girl is mistreated by fate and other people so much that she feels like she doesn't deserve good things. I also think her passiveness was great because it underlined the fact that as a woman she has less power to decide for herself. And I think it shows how it is almost too exhausting to even just get your hopes up. I have to say I was kinda disappointed by Great Expectations. It's not a bad book by any means and I had fun, but I didn't feel any deep connections to the characters and the plot. Same thing with Metamorphosis by Kafka. Yes, it is interesting, but that was everything I felt towards these. Another one is Frankenstein, but I really want to give this book another chance. Because I greatly enjoyed the plot and the discussions, but I didn't enjoy the writing. I have to say though that this was one of the first classics I've read and English isn't my first language so I probably needed more experience to thoroughly enjoy it.

I love all of the collections you’ve shown here! I own a few books from those as well except the Oxford ones but it’s definitely in my radar. I have to say however that I stopped buying the Clothbound classics because the hardcover print was falling off really bad in some books more than others even though I treat my books with a lot of care so I just opted for other editions instead.
