  • Today we are headed to the Old Fashioned Harvest Days in Madrid NY and Ken & Buck (our Percherons) take the stage for a horse pull. We hope you enjoy the pull and seeing all of the old fashioned equipment and way of life!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Thanks for including the extras, like that exhibit of antique carriages. Also for the ponies! Your fellas are powerhouses but ponies can earn their oats too! How much weight did the winning pony team pull? I'd love to have a good pair of ponies! All in all, what fun! Thanks for taking us along!

Wow. I like horse pulls. I was watching o e at our county fair. There were several that you could hardly get them to hold still to hitch. They were wild. Then there was an old man who would back his horses up calmly & they would explode pulling. As soon as the pull was done they were quiet & calm. They won.

Buck and Ken have a lot of heart. I'm proud of them! And of their handler. My Dad died last year at age 82, and one thing he always said was, "You never stop learning." Another thing he used to say was, "I'll know better next time " No matter how much experience you have, I guess there's always room for improvement. The main thing is to have heart. I enjoyed this video as always 💕🐎

Thank you for taking us to the horse pull and giving us information about the weight and distance on each load. Thanks to the judge for letting you and the viewers know what's going on. Proud of Ken and Buck, they done well and it's been a while since they have done some pulls. Interesting buggies and horse machinery. I think that huge wagon with the "stall" in the back is a thrasher or hay baler which a horse is in that "stall" powering the machinery. Jim, with his serious game face, he spoke with kindness of his horses' welfare and seeing the mistakes and make changes next time. Brenda, awesome, awesome narrations, information and fabulous video!

Should coulda woulda Jim hands down best team there as far as I'm concerned. Always very calm just like there owner , they didn't hit the sled they pulled it. And with an exception of the last pull always done it together. And I was glad to see you let them keep pulling after the whistle was blowed. Both of my uncles were pullers. You can sure tell which teams are worked daily. I have to say it again Clam& Collected. . Thank You for a great video.. Ronnie (Clifton Colorado, originally from South East Kansas)

In the display they have a black Hearst, Where we lived in HOLLAND there was special lady in the 300 year old city.
When she passed on they had A white Hearst, white horses at her funeral out of respect for an old virgin spinster in town- done in dignity John.

For life of me, I will never understand draft horse pullers & drafts asked to pull heavy loads with check reins on. What ya hell. It is simple physics. A horse pulls best thru the entire length of his body, head down , with his head up he ends up pulling more across his back & your putting a lot more strain on their hocks. Another thing, when your driving them their heads go up & down & with every step that check rein snaps tight...bang in their mouths. They use their heads for balance, can't do that either. Lastly, a horse's sinuses are designed to drain when their heads are down. They like to put their heads down & blow their noses, can't do that either. For the love of God, these horse's are pulling their hearts out for you guys, how about making it as comfortable for them as you can. I'll get off my soapbox now.

Of the two teams who pull the heaviest load. They seems to anticipate the pull.

Put Bill with Buck to pull and get them good and hot right before you go in the ring and no one will touch them you'll be way ahead of the game! (just my opinion) Great video as always!

Holy Smokes!!! That was something else to watch! Do the horses need the next day off or light work after going to a PULL? Draft horses, especially the "working" ones, are truly amazing animals, They are absolutely Gentle Giants! God bless and pass the carrot's.....

Is it common for work horses to also do pulling contests? I have a sense that around here, southern Indiana and western Kentucky, the pulling horses just do that; they don't regularly work the farms. Also, have you ever bought Belgians from the Amish community in Daviess County, Indiana?

That was awesome job Ken, & Buck. Back as a young boy we go see the Mule pulls. Jim seeing this makes me want to drive down to Columbia Tennessee, they have what’s called a mule day. The highlight is the mule pull.

I miss doing the pulls with my old Belgians (Rip) had a team of sisters ... I miss that "click" and the raw power when they heard it .. of course yours our angels , mine would get sooo excited , glad I only had to erive them , they where tough to hook... But they where angels doing anything else 💖 could cry i miss them so much the pony pulling always has anlmazed me also 💖

I don't know that much about pulling, I always rode quarter horses, but there appears to be a difference between the other teams and yours. The other teams drop the rigging and the horses pull immediately, not really waiting for the direction to pull. However, your boys appear to wait for your go ahead. That's a testament to all the work you do with them. They are so amazing!

That's so cool. I had just asked a few videos ago if Ken and Buck ever did pulls. Then, tada, there they are. I love your horses so much! They are so beautiful and healthy and so well behaved!! Y'all have done excellent work with all of them. Lots of time and commitment. God bless you. Can't wait til the next one!
