  • Today we wanted to show you how there can be a lot of danger when logging in the woods! We had a very tricky tree that was caught up in another tree, and it took quite a lot to get get this tree down safely!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

An other youtuber (small farmer in sweden) said that the ultimate civilization is when a person can spend his/her whole life learning and practice oboe. Thats not really what the life as a farmer consists of. This is not my first language, so please excuse any errors in the text.

Ha ha as someone who TRIED to play the oboe in my high school band, I'd say that's a pretty funny statement. Even with private lessons to learn to play it, I had to go back to my original instrument, the clarinet, after a year. It's a very difficult instrument to learn to play. I always admire and appreciate the oboe players in an orchestra. Thanks for sharing. Take care, from Texas.

Lady, once again lived up to her name and went straight to her stall, but boys will be boys and Bill took the liberty ! Bearings need grease when they come under load and they need to be repacked now and again , but I guess you knew. The bent drum on the wheel is of no consequence since the brakes are not fitted ! I suspect as, you say there should be another nut to lock the bearings into place. Thanks for the video Jim, and we do miss the camera skills of Brenda. Enjoy the week end.

Hi Jim , *Axel comment that may help you*
I never tell you tubers what to do, that would annoy the heck out of me. But sometimes I will say what I would do if I think it would help. There should be a grease seal on the very inside of your axel, it actually goes into the hub and will hold the bearing in place when you reinstall it. This keeps the dirt etc. out so you don’t ruin your bearing. I think I would use a product called Locktite on the threads before installing the nut. That will lock the nut on so you don’t have to weld it. It can be removed with heat applied to it.
I’m a retired mechanic and metal fabricator, I wish I lived closer, I’d love to help you out! Washington State is along way away.
I hope this will help you. John

since your axle does not have a hole for a pin then you probably have an axle that uses a special washer where there is a concave slot on the axle and there is a tab on the washer that goes into the slot so teh washer wont spin. then you bend the outside of the washer against the nut. the special washer goes on after the bearing but before the nut. so its bearing, special washer and nut last.

This a awesome logging this is how it should be done I live in Michigan and the machines keep getting bigger but the wood doesn't even reach maturity they have to cut 3 rows of red pine to get the down then they skid 2 rows I would love to large scale logging shut down in this country they keep saying carbon footprint but the logging is exempt from all climate talk and pollution they destroy 500 time the value of the wood they clear cut half mile from my house a 300 acres the wind has went from 2 to 5ph to 15 to 25 mph large scale and clear cut logging needs to be band in America the wood is max 16inch stomp there no need to have machine that weighs 6 ton 14 feet wide large scale logging needs to be band completely there no jobs they went from 7 to 10 hand cutters per job to 2 guys and there cutting 70 acre clear cuts in 3 days to week when I was kid there would be saplings started at the beginning of job now they plant it 2 and 3 years down the road over 30 thousand acres in my small township clear cut on scenic byway they completely ruined Michigan for paper

Logging and cutting down those trees... dangerous work. Did that with my husband. He was very careful like you. He kept an eye on me. My father in law worked horses all his life. They had a very large team - Bud and Bill. Don't remember what happened to one that it died but the other grieved itself to death. Enjoy your videos. Oh yes! Hey Jim... if you haven't figured it out yet, your cart's stub axles should have the outer bearing retained with a castle nut and split pin. The split pin serves two functions, one is to prevent the nut from backing off as yours did and the other is to adjust out the play in the wheel bearings. It is customary to grease new bearings before installation. Palming the grease so that it fills the voids between rollers and cage is a popular way to achieve this. many how-to's on youtube! Love your videos... you and Brenda seem to have a unique working relationship!

You have such a special bond with your horses Jim, They trust you completely and i am always amazed at how much those two horses can pull behind them. As dangerous as that situation was you still got that tree on the ground. I learned a lot from watching this video it is always enlightening watching you go about your day. It is great that Andy could come out today also to help with some chores on the farm which frees up your time to get more logs out onto the landing. As usual your horses did an outstanding job. Give them a good pat each for both of them i know you don't like giving them treats but if you have a couple of carrots i am sure they will like that kind of a treat. I think they earned it. I am sure Brenda would have closed her eyes at some of the things you filmed in this episode and your camera work wasn't too bad Jim. Stay safe and have a wonderful day.

Jim, you always do a fine job video taping and explaining what you do. I enjoy the real raw footage of your daily activities and how you handle the horses in all circumstances.

Daaaang Jim this adventure was a little sketchy for me. i'm aware that you know you trade, but wow, take care. winter is coming take a few hours and upgrade/repair your hauling device. sure don't want that happening in the snow. Brenda's vidéographie is ok, but i sure would not want my wife in the woods today with the troubles you were having.

Hi, I have these problems often, and Brenda is rarely in the woods with me. It's all part of what I do

well done , Just shows how hard it can get very quickly. Yep Brenda is the professional camera operator but I am happy you took the time to film it so we could see something some of us don't get to see.

Brenda does a very good job behind the camera! One thing I will say is when Jim is holding the camera he does such a good job explaining what and why he is doing things.
I love the videos! Keep them coming!!

So amazing the way the team listened to you.
Sorry about the broken cart-just curious if you checked the other tire/wheel?!
I do enjoy Brenda’s special gift of filming-this was also very educational. I just am in awe of how well that Lady and Bill responded to your voice commands; such a great relationship you have with your teams.

Great repair job Jim! So nice to hear only your voice occasionally, and the harness noise from the horses as you drive through the woods. So refreshing is the sound of silence... No problem with the camera work. Fantastic response by the horses...

I miss Brenda's camera work! But this was ok. I could see the bumper save the cart wheel. I don't know if the audio was out of sync with the video, I don't think it was, but it sure did look like the horses were obeying your voice commands before you spoke them. Maybe it was the reins, but it sure did look like they figured out your plan before they even started. Brenda would be proud of them! I enjoyed this video as always 💕🐎

Do you have Whisky Jack's (Canada Jay's) or Ravens visit when having your lunch break . We always had a small campfire with a tin of tea for a warm drink . First time l had a whisky jack take a small piece of bread from my hand one of those small but unforgettable moments. You maybe too far south for those birds . Cheers
