  • Bellevue is a city located on the east side of Lake Washington, across from Seattle, in the state of Washington, United States. With a population of around 150,000, it is the fifth-largest city in Washington and the largest suburb of Seattle.
Bellevue is known for its highly educated and affluent population, with a strong economy driven by a number of major corporations, including Microsoft, Amazon, and T-Mobile, among others. The city has a high standard of living, with a wide range of upscale residential neighborhoods, shopping centers, and cultural attractions.
In addition to its thriving economy, Bellevue is also known for its natural beauty, with numerous parks and green spaces, including the popular Bellevue Downtown Park, which features a large reflecting pool and a 240-foot waterfall. The city also has easy access to outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking and skiing in the nearby Cascade Mountains.
Bellevue is home to a number of notable cultural attractions, including the Bellevue Arts Museum, which showcases contemporary art and craft, and the Meydenbauer Center, a convention and performing arts center that hosts a variety of concerts, theater performances, and other events throughout the year.

I live in Seattle but grew up in the suburbs near Bellevue. Even then Bellevue was known for its general affluence and perfectly tepid suburban-ness. Not much culture other than shopping, kind of bland, but you felt so safe that you didn’t ever even think about your safety.
Revisiting it 40 years later, downtown is almost unrecognizable. I feel like I’m walking in an artist’s conception of a city-very depersonalized, very inorganic. If there was ever anything remotely funky or natural-seeming about downtown Bellevue it is gone, gone, gone.
It is so different from Seattle now that I actually felt foreign-almost like a trespasser into a virtual place whose utopian function I was not a part of.
That said, I definitely felt immaculately safe, but this time I noticed how safe I felt.
Seattle tried to do what Bellevue did-forfeit soul for economic function and safety-but somehow it couldn’t pull it off. It managed to erase so much of its cultural identity as an artistic, working class city in favor of a corporate paradise; but it suddenly quit when it was too late to quit. It feels like the planners and public safety boards just abandoned it altogether.
The result is a very conflicted city. The edginess and funk tipped into frightening, and the tech Mecca vision turned into something haunting and dystopian.
But Bellevue clearly pulled off what it aimed to. It’s not for me, but, as a life-long Seattleite who found that I need an occasional day trip into drama-free security, I’ve found that Bellevue is…useful.

Agreed, absolutely. A little bit reminds me of an imaginary capital of a tiny petro authoritarian regime run country in Western Asia. AK doesn't appear to be overly impressed, either.

So well written and insightful. I find that the only place that stills somewhat holds the old seattle edginess is next to UW, on the ave. Even capitol hill caters to the wealthy now. You could even say that all of the west coast has changed a place accepting of creatives and the average person into now a dystopian place only for the wealthy who can afford the obscene cost of living. Very sad to see

Looks like just another dead downtown area in the US. No people walking, just cars. And in downtown Seattle there are just way too many homeless people, people with mental issues and people on drugs and any combination of those.

The Bellevue Downtown Park sounds like a stunning place to visit, and the outdoor recreation opportunities in the nearby Cascade Mountains are definitely appealing. What a beautiful place! The lake was gorgeous and the homes that surrounded it were stunning!. I loved the cherry blossom trees but was hoping to see some exotic birds:-) I see that Bellevue is home to Thomasville furniture. I spotted the building on your walk:-) It's a quality brand for those who like a traditional look. I'm a little more eclectic than that, but my mother has always enjoyed them.

Beautiful walk Ken, I loved the park and Lake Washington. What do you think of the giant Redwoods? Actual Redwoods forests on the CA coast starting from the Oregon border into California. My very fave place to go.

I mean I get it, it's a clean and peaceful place which I guess is perfect for some, but it's giving "boring suburb" for me (as someone who grew up in a different boring suburb). I want the opposite of quiet, spacious, and car dependent. I want the excitement and walkability of Capitol Hill or Belltown.
