I am planning to stay in Canada for a year to build an Eleanor based on the first generation Mustang Coupe and bring it to Korea. The budget is $50,000. Currently I am watching a lot of restoration videos and getting motivated. Thank you for your great videos.

    there's a company where i live making classic broncos completely aftermarket selling for like up to 250k. These are new cars built in 2023 with no original vin. I think fastbacks will reach that point. As the market gets smaller and smaller ppl are still going to want them. Of course those broncos have the 5.0 coyote and dana 60 axles, and the complete works

    • @ScottHarness1
      @ScottHarness1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I absolutely believe you are right. The price point for the conversions are sky rocketing. The parts will become super expensive soon enough. Fastback mustangs as far as muscle cars go are way more expensive than the others (not talking about very unique cars but general muscle cars) with that price point and people's desire to have one it makes sense that they will be a reproduction car soon.

    Thanks Pastor Scott, I traded a 4post lift for a 68 and 67 coupe and they are ROUGH, but not to be dissuaded I’m going forward the coupe for my wife and the fastback conversion for me, I was an aircraft mechanic for years before switching to HVAC, yes I know your asking why, another story another time. I love the Lord and wanted more time for Him, anyways thank you for this series, most videos just gloss over the actual process and for a knuckle dragged like me I need things explained to me like a six year old. This has always been a dream car. I grew up in a small town everyone knows everyone. My dad was working for a mechanic down the road named Willy. One day during the summer I went with my dad to work (I was probably 12-13). While they were working on the race car I wondered into a different section of the barn. Using the flashlight on my phone wondering around stacks of tires, old motors, car panels, and then BOOM… there she sat.. a 68 Ford Mustang.. it wasn’t the fastback, but I still fell in love with it. I gave it a proper look through and walked back into the main shop. (The car was all original, but hadn’t ran in years and was parked in shop for 18 years). I then asked Willy what I have to do for that car to which he responded “Get your son out of my shop he’s snooping too much”. I didn’t know he had that one I only ever heard about the 71 Mach 1 he had all original and immaculate shape. He kept that in the house garage I never saw it. Willy was a well respected mechanic and man in our community. Unfortunately he passed in 2022 and all his stuff has been going through auction. The 68’ sold for $2200 at auction sadly I was unable to purchase it at the time. R.I.P. Willy

    You are correct, some buyers will NOT care that the car was once a coup. I have a 68 coup and would never convert it because it is way too good shape. But paying stupid amounts of money for a real fastback is up to the buyer, be my guest if that is your desire in my view.
    Also people are stupid, there will be guys out there that will create what I call "paint job cars" they will paint over rust, do shit body work that will look good for the first 5 months after painted. NO, do your own work, create your own value. Your series will do well for those who can !

    Being the owner of a real fb that I recently restored I find this topic interesting. I agree with everything you have said in this video except that you failed to rake in to account all of the unique fb parts that you would need to acquire for the conversion that you likely would already have with the real fb. Glass, window trim, interior pieces, etc. Not needing any of this for my car I'm not sure what all this would cost but it has to added to the cost. What do you think it would cost to completely finish one of these conversions?

    • @ScottHarness1

      Most if the sub $20k Fastbacks I find have tons of missing parts. It’s hit or miss how much glass or interior there will be at that price point. Just looked at a 1967 FB that was $18k no glass, one door missing, no interior no front fenders, rusted rear quarters. The valuation of FB’s is on the rise. That makes the conversion even more of a good idea. As far as completing the car It really depends on the builder. If the builder wants to really try to do a fastback clone they can but so many who go this route aren’t trying to make a duplicate fastback as much a having the fastback body style and modify the rest. Most want a fastback that they can drive and not be in a car that $50k and up. For me I’m doing a very modified car with tons of modern components. My objective and budget is finished and driving for under $20k.

    Hi Scott. I really enjoyed your coupe and fastback conversion. I am the average guy, some mechanical skills but not enough to do any cutting nor do I have the space. The garage house my wife's RR and my '18 GT PP1. My dad owned a 67 FB when I was young and that's how I became in love with mustangs. I was going to trade my "18 for the "24 Dar horse until I saw your video. I'm not gonna lie, I wish that I had the time to enjoy the satisfaction of doing this my self, but that's not reality. I work 8-5 and I don't have the time to do such a time consuming project. If you're married like me, you know that other priorities come first. I would rather the experts do such detailed and persist work for me. Like you mentioned, I could get someone to do the body (conversion), the suspension, brake system, drive train, and I would like to put a new coyote w/ 10speed in it. Also, I would like to put the '18+ dash and interior inside. I 'm thinking the interior could be got from a wrecked parts car. Excluding paint and wheels/tires, how much do you think this can be done for? roughly.

    • @ScottHarness1
      @ScottHarness1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Friend, The market for conversions is really complex presently. I'm going to paint with a broad brush with this answer. The conversion all in at a shop is $10-$12k that should include parts. That is a simple conversion and does not include floor pans, floor supports, or any other metal work. All of that would be extra. I have no idea where to start with the drivetrain, but I would estimate $12-15k for that. The finish work on the car such as body work and paint, windows, interior, wiring and such could be another $10k or more depending on what you are wanting. It's all subjective though and very dependent on the parts and builder you choose. I would say $35k or so for the work and parts would be a low ball park. That wouldn't include the original car cost. Some will say: "Why put $35k in a coupe to fastback conversion?" the simple answer would be the base rust bucket fastback would cost you what the entire conversion would cost before you started the work. In the end if you buy a coupe for $5-10K you have a finished car under $50k with a late model drivetrain and motor as well as new creature comforts. The same work using a Fastback as the base car would easily be $30k more because of the original car cost. The coupe converted would be worth about what you have in it plus a little more, the fastback would be worth what you have in it plus a little more. In the end the fastback is worth more but cost more. It's a wash at the profit line.

    I have a 64.5 Coupe with no title. Didn't realize at the time how much of a mess it can be, because I'm in Utah, a state that tends to be more lenient, and just assumed it would be easier. I've learned the car came from a scrapyard in Wyoming, so the title may not even exist anymore.
    I'm recently discovering the guys here on TH-cam that swap old chassis onto modern a Mustang chassis. The way I see it, I can either title it as a modern Mustang (though there might be issues if I were to buy a wrecked salvage Mustang, trying to get it inspected and converted to rebuilt/reconstructed), or get it titled as a kit car or specially assembled vehicle, similar to a homemade trailer. Do you have experience with chassis swaps with these Mustangs? Any recommendations? What about companies like Lost Title Solutions, where they track down the title for a price? Are those options worth anything?

    • @ScottHarness1

      No, unfortunately they are different. I have a 1965 coupe that I considered converting and doing a series on but that is way in the future. I may do a list for that year model as well just haven’t done it yet. What you can do… use the parts names on the list and look up the parts numbers for your year based on the names. The names are the same but the numbers are unique for 1964-66, 1967-68, 1969-70, 1971-73.

    I SHAPED THE HARD TOP TO A FASTBACK STYLE (THE VETTE TOP IS METAL) , AND TRIMMED IT (ITS MY JOB)

    THE FRONT OF THE HOOD WAS HINGED SO YOU COULD LIFT AND PROP THE TOP OPEN, SO YOU COULD OPEN THE BOOT (TRUNK) AND FASTEN IT DOWN WITH NASCAR HOOD PINS , SO WHY DIDNT I USE THE OLD FASTBACK WRECKED ROOF, THINKING ABOUT IT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASIER, BUT WAS OFFERED MONEY FOR THE OLD MUZZ AS IT WAS (WINDOWLESS) BUT PRETTY BENT
    I SOLD IT 12 YEARS LATER FOR £30,000 ,(WELL CHUFFED) AND IT TURNED UP IN PALE BLUE WITH STRIPES , AND FETCHED 120,000 DOLLARS IN USA
    AND IT SAID
    THE ONLY ONE OFF SOFT TOP FASTBACK MUSTANG IN THE WORLD ,,, PHEW , ITS DO ABLE , TRY IT
    THIS WAS BACK IN THE 80'S, THERES A SOFT TOP NEAR WHERE I LIVE ,ALL IN BITS 7 GRAND AND RUSTLESS,,,,,,SHOULD I DO IT AGAIN)?????????YES

    I understand what he’s saying and I like his videos and appreciate what he’s doing, but here in the western states, you’re not finding good condition coupes for $2,700. Furthermore, the interior parts for a fastback conversion are another $3,000-$4,000. We converted my brothers 67, it’s easy to do, but he spent $8k on a coupe six banger, then another $9-$10k to do the complete conversion (interior and exterior). It is definitely cheaper than buying an original, but do your homework, based on my experience it’s not as cheap as it sounds, and unless you are in a large metro that has a big classic car appetite, selling old mustang parts from the coupe isn’t that easy.

    • @ScottHarness1
      @ScottHarness1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can build a fastback for much less. Especially the coupe purchase. I just did a quick search of market place and found five coupes $2500 or less. They were In Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas. You can source a complete interior for a Fastback less the front seats for under $1500. You can spend as much as you want but there are ways of spending much less. For instance you can use your coupe interior and just add the vent panels. The numbers I used were real numbers and what I actually spent. I have helped dozens of people do the same. I do agree on doing the homework part.
