Thanks O2. I was not born into a family where we had the luxury of radio or tv. But when I was old enough to understand music, we were blessed with the ability to buy a radio. And what a blessing it was, I was able to grow up listening to AR and my most favorite memories are listening to Chinna chinna aasai and pudhu vellai mazhai for the first time. And my first most favorite singers were Unni Menon, Chitra ma, and Sujatha chechi. goosebumps 🥰

Rahman never compromised in making selection of singers irrespective of language. He was pretty sure that a particular song needed voice of particular singer, say Chitra for Rang De Basanthi,Sadhana Sargam for Vennilave, Sujatha for Ishq Bina etc etc... If Sujatha or Swarnalatha sang few great numbers in Hindi, it's because of ARR.

Great story of that legendary humming for Roja Jaaneman. Loved it. Likewise the husky voice for Podhu Vallai. Bit sad that she did not get to sing Hindi version Ye Haseen Vadiiyan. She probably would have been a better known (or bigger) singer in North (Bollywood) had she sung it.

Love the way she is so elegantly dressed for the interview.. she’s a royalty herself in her own right! And many thanks for finally dedicating an entire episode for her Roja humming and all other songs. If that is not mentioned, there’s no life to this interview and ofcrs as she herself said there’s no looking back esp after this! I think the best is always saved for the last and this episode reminds me of that saying.
In terms of songs, she might also had enjoyed a full fledged Paruvam vanaga or Pudhu vellai in Roja itself yet she was replaced by Chitra in Hindi version. That song too was one of her big jewels 💎 during her initial stages itself and brings out that ethereal, soulful quality of her voice. But nevertheless, he luckily didn’t and couldn’t replace her humming for the title song speaks volumes about her being complimented as Sarangi by Spb for that little yet soulful crooning in Roja. She along with Minimini were the true voices of the title character ‘Roja!’

Rahman in 90s, and early 2000s was more experimental, bolder and was ready to take risk.....perhaps because directors like RGV, Maniratnam, Shankar were there and they were also bolder, ready to take risk and non-conservative in terms of screenplay and story telling.
After that era directors became a bit reluctant, a bit conservative so Rahman had to follow them.
But then,we have still Rang de Basanti, Delhi-6 soundtrack, MOM background score, and many songs like Veera raja veera to celebrate.
But yes, She is absolutely on point when She is talking about 90s and early 2000s. Shankar Mahadevan also echoed same thing.

My Nextdoor neighbor Sridhar Anna was listening to Roja on the it was released, he was a raja fanatic , he had a nice audio system, he was glued to the system listening to Roja songs , I kept talking to him and asking him some stupid questions, suddenly he turned and gave me a tight slap and asked me to be quite , it was very unusual but looking back now, probably he just expressed out how he felt as a ilaiyaraja fanatic thinking no one can even enter Tamil film music while raja is reigning 😂
