Lovely episode as always. The next one with Shankar Mahadevan could be fantastic as he’s such an immensely talented musician himself. Please ask him, was their music somehow inspired from ARR’s sound as Dil Chahta Hai, their first major break contains traces of that new era sound - and perhaps they pushed it forward. Besides, how the Bombay music directors would say and receive ARR’s ground breaking and also highly popular albums, one after another? I hope he will not dodge the answer. Lastly, how in these days and age, after 30+ years, ARR is considered among the music fraternity specially in Bollywood? One more, do film directors tell Shankar, Ehsan and Loy in narration that they need ARR’s kind of sound and treatment?

Truly another interesting episode of Srinivas journey and totally agree with the Moment of the Day! But I thought you will keep that thing about Rajinikanth picking his voice over an established singer’s voice as the Moment of this episode but this way also I’m glad! After all, if not for Rahman all these eventful things wouldn’t have ensued for the movie and esp for Srinivas who I knew at that time only that he was given the Kalaimamani award for this song in Padayappa, one of my most fav movies of all time which I watched in Telugu countless times. Infact, I heard that this movie’s airing on Gemini TV 📺 h has also raised its TRPs and broke the records that way too!! Though, he didn’t sing for any bgm scores but Rahman’s bgms for this movie is a treat to listen for both Rajini fans and movie lovers across the Southern states. I thought he would mention that as well. The bgms are so racy that they added super octane high voltage energy to each and every scene which is what also contributed to the phenomenal success of the movie (both in movie theatres and TV) apart from Rajnikant and Ramya Krishnan’s powerful acting and the superb screenplay in the movie. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable fare to watch this movie every time it airs on TV. It’s just pure magic in each and every scene that keeps you hooked from the first to last scene! Srinivas too sang the song with great poise in his vocals like a classical singer and made the song a huge hit. It would be interesting had he revealed who the other singer that actually sang for this song that he also idolised. Another interesting thing that’s unique to probably this album in Rahman’s career is how the songs became more a hit only after the movie released as many Arr fans didn’t think of this album highly when they heard it on audio. Most ppl including me felt that it was not quite up to Rahman’s usual standards in music at that time. But the realisation came that he did the right job only after watching the movie that the songs are unusually different as they had to gell with the movie’s story very much and not dominate like any of his other musical scores. Nevertheless, his massive bgms more than made it up for the missing grandeur in the songs and Rahman’s touch is exquisitely felt in the score of each and every scene taking the movie’s impact way more higher on the audiences!! But because the movie became such a ‘mass’ive hit, the songs too went on to become hits which is rare with ARRs music as his songs usually became the first crowd puller than the movie on many occasions, be it South or North! Also, I felt there’s an error on your part when I heard that Srinivas sang the Robot sing for both Tamil and Telugu. I can’t say about Tamil but in Telugu it was SPB who sang that song and not Srinivas. He might be in the chorus but his name was not mentioned for this song’s credentials! You may check this with your sources again!! Thanks.

Hariharan sang the first version, but Rajini and KS Ravikumar weren’t fully satisfied, then ARR re recorded with Srinivas, and they loved this version. Somehow, ARR had to very politely and diplomatically convey this to Hariharan who was a very established and senior singer by then. This incident was conveyed in one of the interviews, I can’t recall exactly which one though.

Sujatha was already an established singer in Malayalam. In fact she was senior to Chitra.

Please ask him, was their music somehow inspired from ARR’s sound as Dil Chahta Hai, their first major break contains traces of that new era sound - and perhaps they pushed it forward.

Truly another interesting episode of Srinivas journey and totally agree with the Moment of the Day! But I thought you will keep that thing about Rajinikanth picking his voice over an established singer’s voice as the Moment of this episode but this way also I’m glad! After all, if not for Rahman all these eventful things wouldn’t have ensued for the movie and esp for Srinivas who I knew at that time only that he was given the Kalaimamani award for this song in Padayappa, one of my most fav movies of all time which I watched in Telugu countless times. Infact, I heard that this movie’s airing on Gemini TV 📺 h has also raised its TRPs and broke the records that way too!!
Though, he didn’t sing for any bgm scores but Rahman’s bgms for this movie is a treat to listen for both Rajini fans and movie lovers across the Southern states. I thought he would mention that as well. The bgms are so racy that they added super octane high voltage energy to each and every scene which is what also contributed to the phenomenal success of the movie (both in movie theatres and TV) apart from Rajnikant and Ramya Krishnan’s powerful acting and the superb screenplay in the movie. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable fare to watch this movie every time it airs on TV. It’s just pure magic in each and every scene that keeps you hooked from the first to last scene!
Srinivas too sang the song with great poise in his vocals like a classical singer and made the song a huge hit. It would be interesting had he revealed who the other singer that actually sang for this song that he also idolised. Another interesting thing that’s unique to probably this album in Rahman’s career is how the songs became more a hit only after the movie released as many Arr fans didn’t think of this album highly when they heard it on audio. Most ppl including me felt that it was not quite up to Rahman’s usual standards in music at that time. But the realisation came that he did the right job only after watching the movie that the songs are unusually different as they had to gell with the movie’s story very much and not dominate like any of his other musical scores. Nevertheless, his massive bgms more than made it up for the missing grandeur in the songs and Rahman’s touch is exquisitely felt in the score of each and every scene taking the movie’s impact way more higher on the audiences!! But because the movie became such a ‘mass’ive hit, the songs too went on to become hits which is rare with ARRs music as his songs usually became the first crowd puller than the movie on many occasions, be it South or North!
Also, I felt there’s an error on your part when I heard that Srinivas sang the Robot sing for both Tamil and Telugu. I can’t say about Tamil but in Telugu it was SPB who sang that song and not Srinivas. He might be in the chorus but his name was not mentioned for this song’s credentials! You may check this with your sources again!! Thanks.

Hariharan sang the first version, but Rajini and KS Ravikumar weren’t fully satisfied, then ARR re recorded with Srinivas, and they loved this version. Somehow, ARR had to very politely and diplomatically convey this to Hariharan who was a very established and senior singer by then. This incident was conveyed in one of the interviews, I can’t recall exactly which one though.
