"Care to see something oddly intriguing?" **pulls out full sized PC Game box from shelf** Miss those days when PC games came with a full sized box and actual manual
I was 11 when this came out. It is the first game I remember buying on launch day, not because I was looking forward to it, but because I happened to be in the store and happened to have a bit of money in my pocket. Instead of the usual candy, I would sometimes save up my weekly allowance to buy a game. It took me 3 years to defeat the game and I loved every moment of it. Where did that patience go? I can't just sit down and do the same thing over and over again, like I could back then. I had the patience of a saint, now I have the patience of a primed grenade...
Ok, this is how it works. 1. This game is one of the best games ever made! 2. I think the game is challenging but not unfair. Once you master the controls, you are the man. 3. The intro still looks awesome! 4. This game is a masterpiece.
Might have to disagree with you on it not being unfair. There area a lot of cheap deaths in that game that are impossible to see coming unless you've already been killed by it already. I think there's a difference between puzzle solving and tedious trial-and-error.
My brother and I played the crap out of this as kids, and one of our favorite pastimes was getting a group of Modokon, slapping one, and watching the resulting slap-war. Which.. usually killed a few of them. I didn't realize how much I missed this game. I think it was one of the few harder games that actually kept our attention span.
same with me my uncle got me the game as a Christmas gift when I was 7 the same year the game came out it scared me so bad I never played it again until I downloaded it on my ps3 slim
"Abe's Oddysee is something you'll probably love or hate, usually just both at the same time." A perfect description of this game. No more words needed.
this game should be flooded with awards, the creativity, how advanced it was for it's time (not even needing 3D models to compete with other games) the puzzles, the game play, the cutscene animation, the message about the world, slavery, meat industry, the originality and uniqueness, a CD of this game and it's source code should be in a museum exhibit it's incredible.
It's so strange to hear someone other than me talk about this game. My grandpa and me would play this when I was a very young kid and to this day we both still revisit it. I've never once heard anyone talk about it but it has a hugely special place in my heart. I still remember how betrayed I felt when I found my grandpa's stash of gamenguide for this game and the sequel since he'd brag about how far he was getting
Oh my freakin frakin God!!! For years I have been trying to remember what this game was called!! When I saw the thumbnail for this video I screamed!! Thank you LGR thank you!!!!
Tobi Foxworth You were lost, and now you are found.... go forth my child, play this damn game.. cry, die, and die again; for you have a righteous calling, to GET THE GOOD ENDING!!! And in betweens time (between rage quits) you should play Psychonauts if you haven't already, much easier and the humor in both games are kind of sort of similar in a distant weird way.
+sleaf6 Just save yourself the sheer frustration of playing this and watch the endings on TH-cam. You're not missing much by not playing it. Prince of Persia, Out of this World and BlackThorne are much better choices than this.
Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exodus are some of my favorite games of all time. And Abe's Exodus improved upon somethings, like allowing you to save without checkpoints (but if you forgot to save you'd want to smash your head against the wall). I'd always take on the challenge of finding and saving every last sweet, hidden Mudoken. The puzzle aspect was awesome. I've been dying for a new Oddworld with new puzzles to solve. I'd even love to try new and tasty, but I don't have any playstation console. If I even had the original playstation, I'd be playing Oddysee and Exodus. I'm so glad you reviewed this, I'd actually been curious about your opinion on these since they are as I said, 2 of my favorite.
thank you soo much for doing this video i have been waiting for this for a long time. i fear if i hadnt of said anything the other day this would have never been uploaded
What great timing to find this review now. I just bought this came on CD at Salvation Army for a dollar. Love it! I used to play this back in the day and forgot how much fun it was. Now if I can just get past this one part...
I remember buying this gem for my play station in a used ps game store. It's demo was on the demo disc for ps. I immediately fell in love with Abe's Oddworld. First I got the bad ending, then I saved enough mudokons for the good ending. It was back then with that torturing checkpoint save system a real PAIN. Friends came together and watched me playing it. It was the predecessor of online playthroughs. But I did it. I saved all of them. And it was a huge achivement for a 13 years old kid. The game's athmosphere is incredible. I still love this game today. It is a part of my childhood and me. I loved how it isn't about mindlessly killing enemies but it is about save others and planning carefully every step. My big brother called this game: "that stupid whistl game." He didn't understood what I loved in it.
this game gives me so many nostalgic feelings of when I used to watch my dad play it. As a kid, the scenery freaked me out and I was too scared to play, but now I own New and Tasty and love every enraging minute of it
I never beat this one either, mostly for the punishing checkpoint system, but also because of the irritating limitation of having to rescue _one mudokon at a time,_ which to me just translated to busywork. Luckily, both issues were corrected in the sequel and the recent remake.
Ghost81 Haha, yeah, but even worse, there are some few parts of the game where there is no checkpoints, and there are several hard secret rooms with mudokons in a row. It should also be noted that the original game had like 1/3 of the mudokons, so you didn't need to be able to talk with several at the same time, and where you did, that was an intentional extra challenge.
MMDE Well, there are rooms, even early on, where there are three of them together and the birds are in the next room, which means: greet one, tell him to follow, move to room 2, sing at the birds, then go back to room 1, greet the second, etc etc. Not game breaking, but a little aggravating if you didn't want to leave mudokons behind.
I was very young when my father got this game. It literally destroyed my childhood. Oddworld bestowed on me the worst vivid nightmares a 5 year old could ever imagine, and should never have. Everything about Abe haunted me, from his orange ponytail, to his fiery red eyes, but none more than his mouth being sewn shut. It still turns my stomach seeing his face.
Played this one and the Exodus too as a child. Loved it ! Still love it ! Great review LGR. Keep up the good work. It´s nice to see all these old good games from my childhood. :)
Thanks for the video! Once you showed the menus I had an instant flashback to playing and enjoying the PlayStation version. Great game, doesn't feel dated at all really. I wonder how influential the gameplay and art style are even today. My guess is: quite a lot.
Dude just watched your review on Sanitarium and now this, both games i've never heard of. I'm starting a list of games to get XD Thanks to you! Must...watch...more...reviews... :) Let's hope I don't break my computer in rage when I play!
This game is pretty much solely responsible for getting me into gaming when I was a kid. Before then I hadn't really encountered such an amazing world to explore. Now I'm in my second year of university studying computer science and making my own games too.

Perfect review. The stubborn little brother of ragequit games. Damn, I freaking love Oddworld but I freaking hate Oddworld sums it up pretty well.
My partner and I recently decided to try to complete Abe’s Oddysee, something neither of us achieved as kids. We managed it, but I’m pretty sure we both need counselling now.
I always loved how you could possess the enemies and make them kill each other, that and this game's amazing visuals completely blew my ten year old mind, good memories..
I grew up with this game, its one of my absolute favorites, I have finished it so many times I lost count, played it on everything it was officially and unofficially ported to and honestly know every word of every cut scene, the series in general has good and not so good entries, but none I would call bad, cannot wait for soulstorm.
This game aged so well graphically. And does everyone think this game is as hard as Clint says? I had trouble as a kid but when I went back to play it a few years ago, it wasn't too tough.
I miss when real artists made games. Not AAA money-hungry studios. Ars Technica did an interview with the creator of Oddworld, he was a real artist and in it for the passion, not the money. I also replayed it recently and did not find the game anywhere near as difficult as LGR says. I saved all 99 without too much trouble. Challenging at times but not enough to be frustrating.
Man I played this game back in the day on the original Playstation. I remember it being exactly like you described it. I actually bought it for Playstation again a few months ago, but still haven't played it yet. I may do that today after watching this review. Great vid man!
One of my favourite game, best design and also best experience and a pleasure to finish. Also Abe as a character is one of the most friendly one, like Wall-e. Still wonder why it doesn't exist a movie in the oddworld universe.
I remember having this game for my PS1 back in the day. I sucked at it none the less, now I going to get it on steam. Thanks for reminding me of this great game LGR!
Oh god. This brings back nightmares... I saw this game back in early 2000s, at least I think it was this game. I remember that you played as an alien, it was distinctly puzzle/platformy and you were escaping from people that tried to eat you. I'm not convinced that this is the same game (albeit most of it matches up, the art style feels different). Either way, the game has haunted me for roughly 15 years now. Now I'd just like to know even more if this is the same game.
Dojan5 Are you thinking of Wild 9 maybe? It's also a side-scrolling platformer with dark gritty graphics (although fully polygonal) where you fight aliens, and was on PS1 as well. It was a lot more action oriented than Oddworld though and you played as a human (with a little alien sidekick who was like a mix of Daxter from Jak & Daxter, and Abu from Aladdin).
Robert Martin No. It was really similar to Oddworld (assuming it's not Oddworld). I never played it myself. I was over at my neighbour to play with her iguana. There was a man there too, he had a laptop on which he played said game. I watched for a bit, and I remember a cutscene (where this alien found out that he was going to get eaten) and some gameplay. The reason I'm doubting that it's Oddworld is because I remember it being a lot bluer than the gameplay showed in this video. It also looked a bit more futuristic and a bit less industrial, I think. Granted, this was many years ago, so it's quite possible that my memory is deceiving me.
I've got such fond memories of this from my childhood. Yet strangely I only had it for 3 days. Rented it once and played it to completion. Everything about it just spoke to me and it's probably one of fondest remembered gaming memories.
I absolutely loved this game as a teen in 97, still have the original disk i used back then in good condition and recently downloaded the new version ( new 'n' tasty ) on steam!!!
Still got the cds of all the games here for pc. This was a game that I probably played the most during my childhood. Loved nearly everything about it. 'ELLO
I love how not everything had to be so bombastic and crazy with this game, it was so subtle and atmospheric, I just love it. I loved this game so much as a kid, and this series was so close to my heart growing up. It's kind of sad that, at least in my opinion, the beautiful subtlety and just genuine art feels so.. Lost on the newer games (New n Tasty and Soulstorm.) They just feel so like, loud and in your face all the time for no reason and it's just like, damn. I miss when everything was so subtle and never Directly shoved in your face, the exception to the quiet, subtle atmosphere was the intense chases, dangerous encounters, or panicking moments. It feels like the newer games tried too hard to be different, but also felt like it was trying too hard to be similar to the older games in some ways. I just feel like the older games felt so genuinely focused and just, I dunno.. I love this series, and I kinda really miss it.
This was one of my favorite games as a kid, my dad would get so aggravated at it, he would leave the room and I would pick up the controller and attempt to try. It was the first time I ever saw a game that felt so incredibly otherworldly and artistic. I never found it that hard, but probably because I had grown so accustomed to it. One of my favorite parts were when he rediscovered himself after he escaped the factory.
Cool review! Loved this game as a kid, amazing art style. Finally finished it when I got back to it years later. I fondly remember my heart racing whenever you were about to finish the Scrab temple. Such a ridiculous maze with failure around every corner, hahaha! Also liked the sequel, but personally don't like what became of Oddworld (Inhabitants) after that... Lastly, painstakingly saving all the Mudokans wasn't really worth it in my opinion. Looking forward to the next LGR review...
As a mudokon myself I must say Great review!! Ive always wished I owned the big box version of this. I dont own many big box games I only have Resident Evil 1 2 and 3 in big box but this is definitely another one for the shelf.
As a small kid, I was curious about those 'Spinning Things with Handles on the side and blink red/green' until I made a Mudukon tread on one and it exploded!
In the early days we spent so much time and effort on one game, trying over and over again. Nowdays you fail once and you never come back to your game and just get another one. I remember putting so much time into this game, but it was awesome and Oddworld is one of the best! Very well worth it :).
I loved this game back in the 90's. I love it now (I have it on Steam). It is as difficult as it was back when I was a pre-teen twat, and that hasn't changed, nor has the fact that I am still a pre-teen twat. lol
I remember watching my parents play this when I was very young. My sister and I would say, “Follow me.” Just like Abe for the longest time.
Lol cool!
I also knew people that kept saying that lol.
Hello. Hello. Follow me. Okay.
And of course we can't forget which I'm sure that's why LGR got into it 😂
@@adventureoflinkmk2 Stop it! Nuh-uh.

David Taylor Saying that, I also used to find the original Worms game scary.
oddworld is one of my all time favourite game series
I've got such fond memories of this from my childhood. Yet strangely I only had it for 3 days. Rented it once and played it to completion. Everything about it just spoke to me and it's probably one of fondest remembered gaming memories.
just about to play some Arcanum then I see you've uploaded something, 11 minutes ago! had to watch, keep it going Clint! Rock On!
Best game ever, this and Einhander, I'd still play to this day.
I really loved this game! Glad I found this channel 😊
This review is so spot on with how I feel playing Abe's Oddysee.
damn. i still play this game all the time. used to have nights with friends playing this together.
"-unless you are prone to fits of rage, or setting your computer on fire,"
I recon Markiplier or the GameGrumps should play this.
great review. played this when a was 17 years old. great memories!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH I am so glad you decided to review THIS gem! I totally love it! Thank you! You could do Abe's Exoddus in the future, too.
Love Oddworld, love LGR,
Saw the thumbnail on my youtube front page.
jumped with joy! X)
Loved the ABE games when they came on steam I couldn't resist. Along with Cinemawares Wings
OMG I loved this game. It ate my summer break between freshman and sophomore year.
I approve of this review. :)
I approve of your profile pic.
Finally : D Hope my requests were part of making this one happen. I freaking love Abe's Oddysee and Exodus.
lorne lanning and the guys at oddworld inhabitants are geniuses!! one of the most unique games ever, truly worth a play every now and then.
I had the psone version.. never had alot of experience with Dos.. I like your reviews dude they help me sleep at night.
Binging this playlist!
I've always wondered what Oddworld was about. Might give it a shot sometime.
I LOVED this as a kid. Thank god it's on steam. I can re-live my childhood.
It is as difficult as it was back when I was a pre-teen twat, and that hasn't changed, nor has the fact that I am still a pre-teen twat. lol
