You may be asking yourself, what are PRELOADERS?
    PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
    What does PRELOAD mean?
    PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

Hadn't rode for 10 years and that was a crotch rocket. When I purchased my 2020 SGS last year, I told my wife exactly that. I told her it was a much heavier bike and to let me get more comfortable with it before I put her on it!! No shame in my game.

@jsmooth7048 same exact situation here. Had a zx6r and hadn't rode in about 10 years. Jumped out there and bought a Road Glide Special recently. Love it but definitely way heavier and still getting used to it. Stay safe out there!

Thanks Robert, this is the reason I started being to boss. I wanted my wife to be safer and comfortable. She wants to practice with me. Not all the time, but loves to go with me to my little practice lot. With her, I never push my limits, while practicing. When we are at a rally or show, she’s always pointing out guys that she would never be a passenger with. And when I dip and make a u-turn or lean into the turn, in a parking lot or at a show or rally, she always says “great job baby”. It’s the best feeling ever. She and those around me, know that I’m in control.

Thanks for the videos, 10 years ago I lost my left leg in a motorcycle wreck that was unavoidable with a car passing another car on a hill and zero room for me to maneuver without going off a embankment. That much said I have difficulty holding the left side when I’m 2 up but I’m smooth enough with the right foot to raise at the same time as my left when the bike moves. And refuse to go 2 up on windy days that could put the wind blowing me to the left. In time I’m sure I can strengthen the left leg enough to easily hold 2 up against the wind. Before the accident I rode 20 years no incidents but now realize I was only skilled at curves and straight roads, not slow speed and u turns. Your videos are a great help on areas I need to work on.

I finally took my wife for a ride today about 40 miles in town and interstate too... after almost 2 yrs of building up my confidence and skills . It went better then I actually thought. The main thing i told her is don't fidget and move around at slow speeds and in slow turns to throw me off balance . And it went well... super glad, and my wife loved it too. Still have lot to learn and riding 2 up is definitely whole another ball game but thank you for your teachings ...

I have searched for this video for some time. Been riding about 9 years, and just upgraded from a 2003 Vstar Classic 1100 to a 2013 Street Glide. I'm in LOVE. I also wanted to start getting my wife out on rides, but I'm the type of guy that likes to research everything. But now this video has certainly helped add some comfort to this process. My wife eventually will be riding her own bike, but in the meantime I want to get her some wind therapy, too! Thanks for all the videos, Robert. You're a huge asset to all of us riders that look to TH-cam for advice! Cheers from Canada!

The shifting thing i had to teach my g/f about.
She had a habit of adjusting herself while i was braking or stopped. I had to explain to her that, that doing it under braking is the worst time to do it. If you need to move around do it while we are moving or give me a warning while we are stopped. While we are moving, the bike will handle any shifting you do(yay physics). If we are stopped i can prepare for the shift.

First time viewer here to your channel. The weather in Louisville 'The Derby' Kentucky is gradually getting warmer and soon the motorcycle riding season will be in full swing. I've been riding since 1981 and found your videos to be extremely helpful and informative as well as entertaining. You and your lovely bride make a great team! It's always helpful to get 'refresher training' per se after several months of non-riding during the winter months. Congratulations to you both on a job 'Well Done' and continue making the outstanding videos, they are much appreciated.

I love the fact that you go into detail like I do when I explain things. 😅 My lady hates me for it but that's how we are bro. But yes, I have implemented your rules and teachings when I finally put her behind me on the bike. And yes like you mentioned she remembered more than I did 😅 but she does her part and does her responsibilities and we love going out for weekend cruises and never forget the teachings 👍

Thanks to you and your Queen for this. Rode through my 20s and 30s, didn't at all while raising our boys up.. Now that they're grown I wanted a bike back in my life. I restred an 82 Goldwing the last couple of years and have been riding a bit. I was going to talk my wife into a ride, but after watching this I realize I'm basically a newbie again and need to rebuild my skills and confidence before taking my Queen for a ride. Thank you.

Robert Great video once again. I started to ride with a Military MC and as we entered the main Marine Corps Birthday venue we were doing exercise number two. Many of the brothers were duck walking the entire time. As a new guy I didn't touch the ground at walking speed through thousands of folks some darting to cross in front for a distance of over 1/4 mile. My u-turns were tight at around 19 feet and impeccable. I didn't have Mary on yet, but more practice and i feel comfortable enough that I will trust my slow sleep operation 100% no Duck Walk with her, no problem. Thank you for a new life in safe, quality cycling. Amen and thank you and Anita and my Classmates for a memorable and life enhancing experience.

Great Video Thanks. I have been riding motorcycles for over 45 years now I got a ultra limited back in 2019 a real game changer for me I had to watch you and other people on here mostly motor cops to understand what I was doing wrong. My biggest problem was dropping the bike with my wife on the back when I came to a stop because I did not understand about staying off the front brake and keeping the bike straight I had a lot of bad habitats to overcome. My 1986 Harley Softail which I have rode since 1990 is like riding a dirt bike compared to what I have now.

I watch all of your videos, but for the very first time today I watched this video with earbuds on. Wow, what a difference the earbuds made! At 64, I think most of us have some level of hearing loss and with the earbuds on it really came through loud and clear what preload and keep it loaded means. I clearly heard each and every RPM from your bike on each and every exercise. I truly don’t see how you find all the time to teach all the classes, edited the videos and transcribe the audio but all I can do is say thank you!!!

Hi Robert! I just subscribed to your channel. Used to ride 25 years ago, before kids lol....just got "gifted" another motorcycle. I used to have a Honda Silverwing 650, which I was quite competent on, however, new bike is a 2000 Yamaha Road Star 1600. HUGE difference! So I'm watching vids and practicing when I can. I've taken it out on a couple short rides, even in town, and was ok, if a little wobbly/wide in my turns! A lot heavier bike than I had, but my last ride to town, my turns were better and my confidence was a bit higher. I have a small parking lot near me I'm going to ask permission to use to practice my slow maneuvers. Thanks for the great videos, I'll keep watching!

Thank you again Robert (and Anita of course) for providing us with great content once again! I often get passengers that want to counter when going into a turn because the lean is uncomfortable even after giving instructions on the bike turns by leaning. Instinctively they want to lean the opposite way the bike is leaning in a turn. Hopefully this video will help...I know it will help! Appreciate all you do!

Riding two up is the highest responsibility a rider can have.
Sometimes I have a problem getting my Queen to understand this. I do everything in my power to know my bike and be safe. Before I’d even take her anywhere I made sure she was fully equipped with full gear.
Anyway.. there are some basic things the passenger needs to do as well. It’s a team effort to come back home safe.
It’s my responsibility to be the boss of my motorcycle and to educate my missus on how to ride safely in the back.
She always wants to start adjusting herself when we are creeping to a stop or lean over to talk to me when we are under 10mph.
Preloading pulling to a stop saved me from
A dump in one of those situations. She leaned way to the side when we were prolly at 5mph and if I didn’t have some power on tap and pulled against the rear brake .. we woulda gone over.
Ppl should NEVER taking having a passenger lightly. They have NO control over what’s going on (well except for passenger responsibilities)

  • @Yamahog
    @Yamahog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Awesome lecture, Rob... Just a reminder note from me to your crew, et al..... The Physio- Psychological reason for the passenger "looking" in the same direction that you are when doing these maneuvers, is so they don't get dizzy and throw the bike off balance..... If the passenger is off balance, aka motion sickness, you will have issues..... Stay Safe

25:34 (Just adding this as a bookmark for myself.) This is what I'm working on and I was doing the exercise with handlebars all the way turned and locked before moving which I believe added to my sense of the drama that ensued. It's one thing to keep it loaded....it's another thing to find yourself barely hanging on to the bike with your throttle hand as the bike announces your failure with a throaty roar while it tries to nosedive because it caught you eyeballing your cones. (BTW, I don't yet practise 2 up, and won't until things become less dramatic.) I think I might owe you some 4 count pushups as well.
