    Excellent! After seeing someone break their side stand while mounting their bike using the foot peg I have never tried it. I have seen many people do it without an issue but still. I have never seen anyone do it from the right side and everyone I have seen mount using the peg hasn't done it with transferring the weight off the stand.
    Now that I know the correct way to do this I'm going to practice and use this skill. The older I get the more difficult it is to do that high kick to get on my bikes.
    Thanks to you and Christina for sharing your knowledge.

    • @TravisTerrell
      @TravisTerrell ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? Man, the kickstand *had* to have been damaged, haha. (Or perhaps the rider weighed as much as the motorcycle?) I'd be afraid to even park the bike, for that matter lol. Sure couldn't do any handy kick stand turns!
      Personally, I use the pegs, but just climb on whichever side of the bike I happen to be closest to. Sometimes if it's really leaned over, the right side is way easier, though. It can be hard to climb on a tall bike with rear luggage without them, even for me at 6'1".

    I've recently got into motorcycles, and got myself a Kawi Eliminator. It's been a lot of fun, but I've found I love roadtrips and "bike camping" at campsites designed for cars, so I'm thinking an ADV bike might be in my future. But at 5'8", they are a bit tall.
    My MSF instructor was even shorter, and demonstrated the way to mount his ADV bike, but at the dealership today while dropping off my bike for work, I felt like a goof mounting a Versys and a NC750 and being a bit off, but thanks to this video, I think I know what the secret sauce I'm missing is.
    I'll try mounting my Eliminator as well as if i test sit or ride ADV bikes this way, to get in some practice with my balance when mounting, so thank you so much for the funny video and education!

    Great video Bret! An alternative to the passenger dismount - Susan gets off our 1200GSA (once I'm off) by simply lifting her right leg and swinging it over to the left, then slides off. Dead easy. She does get on the same way as nicely described here - she gets on first!

    This is one of your best videos- and that is a tall order my friend!
    I used to be a monkey and get on my bike so many ways BUT on duty broken back/neck fused with titanium rods/shoulder crushed really limits my mobility now. Especially if I have been off the bike for a bit I go out in the garage and practice getting on/off. Your vid gave me great motivation and justification to keep it up and keep riding.

    Great video! My partner mounts my V-Strom like that, sitting on the rider's seat and then shuffling back when my bike is loaded. No one taught us, it just made sense to do it that way! 👍
    I've often mounted my bike from the right side. But as an instructor myself, it's not what I teach my students as they're all learners and riding beginner's bikes on the street. I'll let them find this video later on! 😂

    I have recently started mounting using the peg on the left side of the bike. I started mounting this way after carrying quite a bit of camping gear. I am not as flexible as I used to be so I mount much more slowly than Bret does. To prevent overloading the stand I lean over the bike and put weight on the right handlebar.

    Thankyou very much for this video, I've just got back into motorcycles after a 4 yr hiatus & hip replacement and I'm not as flexible as I was back then, this video has given me the confidence to practice this method, especially approaching from the high side which I've always avoided. Comes in handy sometimes due to some parking situations where highside would be the better side. Consider me a new subscriber.👍👍

    I love using this method of mounting and dismounting with the pillion in place -- but -- make sure to shut off the bike in gear. The one time I did not, and did not notice a very gentle slope, the bike along with my lovely wife rolled off the side stand and feel to the ground. I then said ``what are you doing down there`` which did not help much. Just be in gear on shutdown.

    Ha! Bret, have you been watching me try to get on my luggage laden bike? Occasionally unable to lift my right leg fully for reasons unknown, short and getting older, my riding friends often have a laugh watching me try to mount. This year, I started getting on from the right as you've demonstrated with much criticisms and guffaws. Thank you for this vid/training and confirmation that mounting like this is okay!

  • @arthurwhite8245
    @arthurwhite8245 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Bret and Christina, that was fun to watch. I learnt some time ago how to mount and dismount bikes that were too tall for me when I was working on rally bikes. These animals are way too tall for me to be able to put a foot down while sat in the saddle. I start the bike and let it warm up while it is on its stand. Then, standing on the left side of the bike with my left hand on the handlebar and my right hand on the saddle, I push the bike into an upright position and kick up the side stand. Then I pull in the clutch, put my left foot on the left peg and engage first gear, move my right hand to throttle and start to pull away. As the bike moves forward and starts to assume the self balancing mode that moving bikes have I simply step up and swing my right leg over and put it on the right peg. The dismount is simply the reverse of this manoeuvre. Obviously this requires some degree of confidence as I think does your mounting technique. Though come to think of it, most things motorcycle related require slightly more confidence than is needed to steer a tin box on wheels 🙃.
    Safe riding

    DR650 rider here with Acerbis 5 gal tank. I found I needed to put my body weight over the fuel cap; so maybe the 10 or 11 o'clock position from the pegs (if the headlight is "noon"). My knee is actually at the back of the tank rather than then the seat. That probably means that's where I need to be in sketchy terrain.

    Lifting upright from the sidestand side I found it easier to turn the handlebars to the right as I’m pushing off the ground with my left leg. Seems to more easily want to “fall” right that way.

    When you mount from the side stand rotating the wheel over the opposite side, as you have done over the first example, help to reduce some of the weight that go over the side stand, plus give more space.

  • @luisbraz-ruivo

    Thanks Bret, I have been doing this for years but from the left side. I have done this technique on 250cc bikes and on 1200cc bikes, never had a problem with the side stand. I do two things that for me work well. I either have the front wheel straight or turned to the right to give room to mount and I ALWAYS keep my right hand on the front brake lever to keep the bike from moving just in case. I find mounting from the right side unnatural, I know it is just my brain but why change 40 years of brain training? Thanks for the video.

  • @matt_kelly
    @matt_kelly ปีที่แล้ว

    Your point about short riders is true. I have a tall bike and I find I have to put both of my feet on the pegs and then lean way out to get it off the stand. I don't always feel confident putting my outside foot on the ground since I don't know if I can get my foot all the way to the ground if I'm on uneven terrain. Maybe I should try getting on from the non-stand side to help with that, I am so used to my technique from my shorter bike. Thanks for the tip! If my bike is loaded up with camping gear I tend to just do the rolling version of this mount and I've never had a problem with it.
    It seems like every adventure channel I watch (ItchyBoots, OnHerBike, etc.) they always prefer to stick their leg over like you demonstrated in the beginning, I always thought that was an unbalanced accident waiting to happen.

    I have tried both sides. Still like the kickstand side. Either works well with my Wing. My 400 adventure bike has soft suspension and sinks a lot when I weight it. Opposite side gets pretty shaky and I don't like it. I'm 73 years old and don't have great balance. Kickstand doesn't sink into the ground. It has a 3" square plate welded on. My buddy was having trouble mounting his Tiger. I told him to step on the peg first. No more problem even with a tail bag.

    After getting a tall bike (DRZ 400) I was told by the seller and other videos about mounting on the right side including the safety factor of being away from traffic. My right knee isn't the best and I had to pick my body weight up the 18 inches (the right foot peg heigh) can be painful. I was approaching the bike at an an angle. Per your instructions by planting your knee into the gas tank seems to create a lot less stress on my knee and the counterbalancing of your weight over the bike seems to happen without having to make a consious effort. All the other videos teaching this mounting method need to go back and include the knee to tank aspect. Thanks

    Peg mounting is great in some situations but mainly when you're sure you've got good ground and a mostly level stable bike (not something to rely on to always be an option). I'm tall enough (barely) to directly swing my leg over even my 701 with side bags so the only issue (with any of my adv bikes) is when a top bag/case is mounted. For those situations I use the peg if I trust the ground and posture of the bike (half the time maybe - these are adv bikes and are often on the soft stuff) and bunny hop in the rest of the time.

Partialy I was using my body to raise it from the kickstand, but the getting on I either intuitively did as I should or I'm very lucky and my kickstand is a trooper.

      Wouldn't have surprised me at all. That man has some serious moves. I bet his killing it on the dance floor.

    After seeing the passenger mount and dismount section:
    You should definitely creat a gymnastics horse routine for motorcycles 😂

    This might work on a heavy 1250GS but if I try to mount my Honda NC750X that way, it tips over. No matter how far I lean over and puch my knee into the seat.

    Wasn't that you showing how to turn around on a tight track using a kickstand? :D
    The method you presented here works with the big cows. Try (and show) this with something lighter...

    How about a shorter person getting a heavy bike off the side stand? I’ll do a search of your videos. Great technique and I love your helper!

    thanks, does this actually also work on a lighter bike like Honda's crf300 rally or Voge 300 rally? Is bike weight any influence?

    I am curious as to why you have a patch of the Flag of Nepal on your jacket.

      That is the Jacket I wear when I guide motorcycle tours through Nepal. I am working on a new Nepal tour for the end of 2024.

    I've been watching your videos for years and I have to say they are great. Very informative. I've recently gone on a few rides with a passenger and need to upgrade the toothpick passenger pegs. I'm having trouble finding any information on wide passenger pegs. Any suggestions would be great. 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R Rally
