Severn Beach & Railway Halt UK

  • The railway began life as a Resort train when Severn Beach was a well known holiday destination for the residence of Bristol. It also worked, indeed still works as a docks railway around the port of Avonmouth, as well as a coal and freight line north of Bristol. It was later extended to join the Gloucester Birmingham line to enable goods and passengers to travel from Birmingham to Bristol in both directions.
Although the line remains the stations in-between have not survived well.
This series of films aims to look at or for evidence of stations. Stonehouse, Frocester, Berkeley Road, Charfield, Wickwar and Yate on the Bristol to Birminham line.
We look for evidence and to tell the stories of the ‘goings on’ surrounding their history

The industrial area adjacent to Severn Bridge was a regular destination for my truck and I as was the now closed Paper Mill at the foot of the Welsh side of the crossing. If I remember rightly, Downtons Haulage had a rail head which came off the Severn Beach Branch and at that time was still in use. Thanks for the video Ron great content as per usual.

There really is something special about your videos. Such a pleasure to watch; my son is only 6 but he really enjoys them too. Thank you for making them!

Superb video. What a wonderful place this must have been in the 1930s. It's many years since I was there. To be honest, today it is quite hard to imagine the idea of anyone coming here on holiday. Severn Beach is quite devoid of charm being mostly a commuter town I guess . You may be interested to know that St Andrews Road station you featured, is the least used station in Bristol - 5728 passengers in 2019/20. Love the two river crossings. The old bridge really is a grand old lady. Thanks for taking me there today. I enjoyed reliving my memories

Very interesting video Roy. Certainly not the most scenic of places, but some nice relics lying around. That old post was especially beautiful, been looking for something similar for the corner of my brick wall.

An interesting place, Ron. I have memories of further down the estuary over 60 years ago, when I travelled by train from Sussex to Weston in Gordano by train, changing at Bristol to a very slow local steam line. I see that village has a population of 301, so any railway in the area would be long gone. I can't remember if the station we went to was in the village, or if we had to go to Portishead, which would have been the nearest place of any size. Anyway, memories are hazy after all that time, and the girl-friend didn't last! Thanks for the video! Living now in New Zealand with almost no history here, it's good to get a bit of nostalgia, and your walks are always valuable.

Great video, nice to see a different perspective of the new severn crossing, have passed over it many of times but never saw what lies beneath! :)

Thanks Ron, that was really enjoyable. I though your audio was great by the way, especially the sounds of that DMU accelerating away and, as ever, your choice of theme music.

A bridge or a crossing? An old or a current sewage pipe? Hawaiian station? Your wit gets crispier by the video. Rare pleasures. Thank you.

Oh wow - that is something to which I shall look forward to seeing. Look out for, or beware of, shades of my mid- nineteenth century ancestors some of who were baptised/married at St Mary!

Hi Ron, Sorry for being late. Lovely video of a very interesting area. I've not been over the crossing since the late 90's with two young children screaming in the car! Hope you are doing ok! Best Wishes...Tim.

@@ParkinsonsWalks I'm so sorry again Ron, same here too. Covid blues again this week I'm afraid. I'ts a bit challenging, I suppose the dull winter weather does not help. I've just tried to get out a bit more for walks this week! Tim

@@levelcrossing150 Hi Tim, we are surrounded by floods at the moment, out of a possible six roads out of the village we are currently down to one! Fortunately our house is on a hill so we're ok. Take care and enjoy your walks. Ron

@@ParkinsonsWalks Thanks Ron, I live in a floodplain area and fortunately like you I live on a hill too. The whole valley would have to fill up to reach my house. The only slight downfall is that it gets quite windy from time to time so I keep an eye out for my tiles. It sounds like if things get worse you might need to consider getting a dinghy, I believe there are some great bargains to be had in Dover these days!😉 Take care....Tim

Very interesting visit to a place that is 'the end of the line' in every respect. As a Man of Kent, it reminded me very much of the Isle of Sheppey, and believe me, you don't want to be reminded of the Isle of Sheppey.

I watched a video on Bristol and its traffic nightmares and one suggestion reopening the rail alongside the Severn side and Portihead etc they were thinking of light rail like London Docklands or Croydon Tramlink both would be better than 1.5hrs in car each way....
