  • In this video I'm sharing with you 3 kombucha myths. I used to think these things were 'set in stone' and nonnegotiable but I've learned the truth throughout the years. I hope you enjoy. See below for a picture of vinegar eels.
    1. You have to use glass bottles for your 2nd ferment 1:06
    2. Using white vinegar in your ferment 1 will kill your SCOBY 2:12
    3. You need a SCOBY to make kombucha 5:12
    All myths, my friends. Watch the video to find out why.

    The pellicle actually contains the large amount of SCOBY, I brewed kombucha from scratch (with store drink) and it fermented firstly very slow.
    And then, when there's grown a thick SCOBY, it ferments really fast (like about 2 - 3 days)

  • @bestcrossroad

    I obtained my 1st SCOBY online , it came with starter liquids, it’s been 3 yrs now that I ferment this wonderful drink. But, I also tested the idea of making/ obtaining a SCOBY from kombucha that you buy from store. If you leave the store- bought bottle at room temp. It’ll form a SCOBY and I successfully used it with the rest of the liq. as starter tea. I ferment 3 gallons at a time, our family like our meals with kombucha.
    Thanks for sharing your ideas Lyzz. ❤️

    Yes I agree with you. The scoby is not necessary. I got my first scoby by fermenting some komboucha and sweetened tea for a week. I've also stored some komboucha to make it into vinegar and it formed several scobies.

    I've always used plastic soda bottles for my 2nd ferments and I culture vinegar eels for my fish but I sure don't wont to eat them ,thanks for the tip.

    Great video!!! Would like to hear more someday about what infestations, molds or what else happens right or wrong with the fermentation process. And maybe how can we repair such problems? And for those microscopic worms, probably to salvage the 'vinegar' you might have to boil that substance with them in it for a good source of protein. :)

    • @KombuchaLiz
      @KombuchaLiz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey thanks for watching. I could do a video on what to do if your kombucha gets mold. Or maybe causes of mold in kombucha and what to do about it. I think that's a winner. What do you think? Thank you for the idea. I'll pass on those worm protein sources. Peanut butter sounds much better haha.

    Good info but I was hoping for some more controversial topics like how you "have" to use organic, non-GMO, ingredients. SCOBY dont care. SCOBY just wants caffeine some form of sugar.
    Oh, and for those that might be wondering vinegar eels arent really "eels". They are nematodes, AKA roundworms and can occur in any unfiltered vinegar. They occasionally find their way into kombucha even if you DON'T add vinegar to your tea. Vinegar eels are just looking for an acidic environment where they can feed on yeast. This is just one of the many reasons we need to make sure we keep our kombucha covered at all times.

    • @KombuchaLiz
      @KombuchaLiz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is great information about the vinegar eels. Thank you for sharing that.
      I agree SCOBY's don't care if the tea is organic or fair trade. They just want some suga. Sorry it wasn't controversial enough for ya. I thought making kombucha without the SCOBY was a good one . Do you think I should do a video on ingredients?

    I confirm you 100% do NOT need a scoby. You can use 1 bottle of GT's plain kombucha, 1 cup sugar, and 4-6 teabags to make your first gallon. Then you may as well use most of that to make more because it's addictive

    • @KombuchaLiz
      @KombuchaLiz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and sorry for the late reply. Yeah, I think you're on to something about that, not making unflavored. I think you'd be fine using a flavored one. I've had lots of F2 bottles grow a scoby. That is what I would do. I haven't tried it yet but I will put I on my list of videos. Especially since unflavored is getting so hard to find.

    Someone please help meeee! I can't get rid of vinegar eels!!!!! The first time I made kombucha it got infested with vinegar eels because I used apple cider vinegar, HUGE MISTAKE. I learned from it and threw the whole batch. I made a 2nd batch and this time i made sure I cleaned everything, I literally sterilized everything and I also used a whole new scoby that I bought. And I still ended up with vinegar eels! Honestly, I have spent too much money and I'm not sure what to do. Pls help

      @KombuchaLiz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kevin. I am so sorry you're having this problem. I'm sure it has been super frustrating. I read over some information it sounds like you've done everything suggested EXCEPT after you sanitize your jar rinse it with DISTILLED WHITE VINEGAR. That is all I have to suggest. I'm guessing all the equipment, not just the jar, that came in contact w/ the batch of vinegar eels was also washed and sanitized?

    • @kjmo10
      @kjmo10 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KombuchaLiz yes all the equipment was sterilized. I even made sure to use a new sponge and a gentle dish soap to wash everything. I sterilized with boiling water. • @KombuchaLiz
      @KombuchaLiz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. I don't suggest using vinegar at all. Some people will do this (use white vinegar) if they don't have enough of the starter tea. Some people actually like it. So what other people have done, probably on accident, is used apple cider vinegar. Using apple cider can cause the eels. I don't recommend using vinegar at all. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have more questions. Happy brewing.
