Matilda (Mara Wilson from Mrs. Doubtfire) discreetly mixes peroxide with a beauty product. Her father, Harry (Danny De Vito from Batman Returns), wakes up and goes to the bathroom. Just like every morning, he puts product in his hair to make it look beautiful. However, it is precisely this product that Matilda tampered with. When Harry arrives in the kitchen, the family is in shock. His hair is completely bleached.

What’s the Matilda movie about?
Young genius Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson from Mrs. Doubtfire) is regularly neglected and mistreated by her parents and her older brother. At school, she discovers the harsh punishments that Miss Trunchbull (Pamela Ferris), the tyrannical principal, inflicts on students, while her teacher, Miss Honey (Embeth Jean Davidtz), becomes attached to Matilda because of her intelligence. Honey demands that Matilda be promoted to a higher class, but Trunchbull refuses. Miss Honey tells the Wormwoods about their daughter's genius but they ignore her while Matilda discovers that her father, Harry (Danny De Vito from Batman Returns), is under FBI surveillance. Her parents refuse to believe her. Matilda exercises her telekinetic power by making objects fly in the house and thwarting FBI agents who threaten to put her in an orphanage. She goes to Trunchbull's house to try to scare her with her power, but the director discovers her presence. The next day, Matilda reveals her powers to Honey, but Trunchbull goes to the classroom to get Matilda to confess. Trunchbull ends up leaving school for good. The FBI having discovered enough evidence to bring Harry down, the Wormwoods must flee to Guam. They want to get Matilda back from Honey's house but she refuses to follow them and asks to be adopted by Honey. They eventually agree and Matilda lives happily with Honey, who then becomes the new director of Crunchem Hall.

I always forget Danny DeVito plays the Dad. He’s such a good actor that when he changes his personality and grows a mustache you literally don’t notice that he’s Danny DeVito.

He meant to say "When a CHILD is bad." Instead he said "When a PERSON is bad." and thereby introduced a revolutionary idea: that children could punish their parents... if and when they deserved it of course.
And this guy was very deserving.
i actually took this to heart and hid a few of my parents items on them for a while when i was a kid... they found them eventually of course but i did make them think they were losing their minds

it's funny how his character is the mean dad but in real life. He actually takes care of Wilson while her mom was sick.
Her mother died of breast cancer shortly before the film was released in cinemas, but she got to watch it right before she passed away.

Since Danny DeVito is narrating this I'm thinking it's implied that Mr wormwood is telling his story from prison after getting caught and has finally learned his lesson after all these years

Some would think that. But on the other hand, the narrator and Harry Wormwood are basically two different people, despite having being portrayed and voiced by the same actor.
That makes sense. It would make even more sense that Harry, Zinny and Michael never made it to the airport and were caught by the feds.
Yeah, and even if they did escape, they most likely would have eventually been caught anyway, since Guam is under US jurisdiction.

I never quite got why Harry needed stolen car parts in the first place. Like, are the car parts from old cars? And if so, why do they need to be stolen? If they are new, why is he putting new parts on old cars when he's a dodgy dealer anyway? May as well go to a scrapyard and use old parts he could pick up for next to nothing no?

Mara Wilson and Macaulay Culkin are my two favourite child actors/actresses of the 90’s… both are just absolutely adorable and loveable by all. I’m glad that Mara got a title role in Matilda, whereas in Mrs Doubtfire she was a secondary, yet important character.
Could you imagine if Kevin McCallister and Matilda Wormwood Honey met up and became friends? I think that it would be hilarious to see Miss Trunchbull and the Wormwoods fall for booby traps, or the Wet Bandits fall victim to magic powers!

I never realised how smart and mature Matilda is, she read and in this clip, made her own breakfast with no help at all. Even though I remember this movie well because I watched it a lot when I was younger, this movie makes me sad rewatching it. She basically was emotionally neglected and emotionally abused. The Tv scene and her book getting ripped up always made me the most sad. Glad she met Ms Honey though. I remembr the ending being my favorite part and seeing her actually happy at the end.

Until I started watching Cheers, I always thought Rhea Perlman was a tall woman. The angling of the camera and the outfits (especially when Miss Honey visits the Wormwood house) she wore made her look much taller. Not just standing next to Danny DeVito.
something i like about this film is that they really don’t treat michael and better than they do matilda, it’s just that he’s too thuggish to be hurt by it.

Just a few months before this movie came out my 4th grade teacher read the original Roald Dahl children’s novel to my class and we all loved it. Then that summer I found out about this movie and my mom took me and my sister to see it. I liked it better than I thought I would.
