The Bangkok Railway Building (Hua Lamphong) was not demolished, but would be used to make the Railway Museum and the King Rama V and Rama IX Museum.

I made my first Bkk-CM train journey on Christmas Day, 2003. The seats were slatted wood benches, the carriages were the old style where you stepped into the open to go between them, and there were three other people in my carriage (all Thai) for the entire 12-hour journey.
Absolutely loved it, and would do it again in the same manner . . . if I wasn't an oldie now.
The big bonus of that day, of course, was meeting my now wife 😎

I've always enjoyed the open aired trains in Thailand. The few times I took the air con trains I really didn't like it. Felt stuffy and uncomfortable. Kinda like a long airplane ride. When I traveled CM to Bangkok, and vise versa, did the night time sleeper. When I went to Hat Yai it was 2nd class air con like yours. Really didn't like it. The 3rd class, as you've said, are fun as you hang your head out the windows. And, lots of food vendors get on and off between stops. Great food and priceless memories!

Hi Chai- last week, Dton and I travelled from BKK to Buriram on a 2nd class train with AC too. What was supposed to be a 6 hr trip turned into a 7.5 trip due to a break down. We only paid 375 ea and we didn't get a meal. Instead, there were dozens of vendors who boarded at different stations selling delicious food. You definitely had a newer car. Our seats were not comfortable, no table trays and no electrical outlets. I tried to move to a forward facing seat but was reprimanded by the officer lol and had to get back to my backward facing seat ;-( Enjoy your time in BKK! -Raun

In all my years in Thailand, I have never seen that style of fan train where there are no open windows almost looks like the Sprinter Air Con the most expensive train possible that has the meals included. These are the trains that the stations like Chiang Mai always sell tickets to foreigners. Unless you speak to them in Thai that you want a 3rd class ordinary train is this the ticket they will sell you.
What they tend to have on that run most of the time over the last ten years is what I have always referred to as the Garbage trains the ones that look like old subway cars from New York City. They are the loudest, most smoke, and dirtiest in the fleet. Oddly you never see them on any of the southern routes out of Bangkok only in the north and Isan. The most broken-down trains run from Nong Khai to Udon Thani.
In the future, the best train on the Chaing Mai route the (rot rayo) fast train 3rd class that makes a stop in Lampang about 1pm in the afternoon and continues onto Bangkok. The ones that have the older brownish red cars. The trains leaving Chiang Mai tend to always leave at least an hour late for no reason. I am not joking when I say I have traveled on the Thai trains hundreds of times over the last twenty years and 99.9999% of the time they are always delayed somewhere down the line. In your case if not late you have been damn lucky.

Man! I always love your input! Pretty detailed and alway another angle of traveling 🤩 sometimes things go right. @@Chai_Travel I only took a Sprinter once because I was curious and hated it. I don,t like air-con buses any better always end up feeling dizzy and tired so always try to get a fan bus or train when possible. On most of the long runs more than five hours, they tend to be air-con these days but you can still find a fan bus if you ask. Be careful at some of the bigger bus stations like Chiang Mai or Rai for example they will tell you they don,t have fan buses when they do. My motto always ask more than one person. The same goes for many hotels.
