I adopted my boy Duncan knowing he was already older but he's still a very sweet boy just doesn't use his wheel very much and loves his rest. Something I like to put out there is elderly pets need love too. Especially in shelters where they are often overlooked
Ugh my first hammies eyes started to get crusted shut during its last week of life. I wish hamsters lived longer. But I’m just glad there’s ppl like you that can give them an amazing life the short time that they are here
Me too, at least if they could live as long as guinea pigs do. Nosey's eyes also get crusty, especially after he sleeps. I wipe his eyes with a cotton round soaked in lukewarm water or saline solution. It really helps open his eyes.
It’s nice to see someone else do this. I would get so much grief from people in Facebook hamster groups when I would suggest downsizing for an elderly hamster that couldn’t get around as easily.
The way I see it is if the hamster is struggling, downsizing and making the cage more flat is a good thing to do. Of course, we still shouldn't go under the minimum recommended size and should still offer all the enrichment necessary. I think sometimes we need to understand that bigger is not always better and that we need to adjust the environment to the specific animal we are caring for and their needs at that time. You gave me a great idea for a future video about exceptions to hamster care rules. Thank you! 😊❤

I've had my boy, Buddy, for two months and he is around 19 months. He belonged to a relative who could no longer keep him. He had a small wire cage and sparse bedding! 😢 I did tons of research as i haven't had hammies for years. FFWD And my boy is loving his new home with all mod-cons, new big wheel, etc, deeeeep bedding and a 3 chamber hide and 'Private Beach' 😂. He's got a new lease of life in his later life 😂. Bless his ❤. He's so adorable 😍.
My Russian also had a big setup, this brought back memories.💖 He developed cancer and it was impossible to remove the tumors as he had a bad reaction to anesthesia. But he had treatment and weekly checkups. He was a fighter who lived 6 more months. Very energetic. Close to his 3rd bday the vet and I decided to let him rest. As painful as it was... It's the best we can do in some situations. He left peacefully, painless and with someone beside him. He now rests in my garden and I also kept his paw prints and little of his of his hair.
I am sorry for your loss. It's always a hard decision to make but it's for the best. You did the right thing. When Nosey's time comes he will also be buried in my garden under a hazelnut tree. But I hope he will hold on for a while longer.

Cute 😍 my sophan is almost 3 now and is unstable when running around. I keep everything low for him too now. He would definitely hurt himself otherwise..he still loves snuggles though and his hamster popcorn treat..i hate seeing him so frail as i remember his younger days..i love him dearly
As our little hamster babies grow older it’s sad to see them slow down my boy, Brathalemew Chungus Gingersnap III when he was only about a mouth old that was three mouths ago and he has shown no signs of slowing down anytime soon and couldn’t be happier

Miggy had crushing disease he was on steroids for a good few month but he deteriorated n I felt the best thing was to say good bye n let him be at peace ! John Paul was screaming and in total panic rolling all over when he was dying ,I wrapped him in a blanket to try make him feel safe and I took him to be put down it broke my heart to see him like that I try remember all the good times he had but I always go back to the horrid scared look on his face 😢 so sad these lil baby’s have such short lives im too soft I just cry thinking of it 😢❤

It's spruce, which even though is a softwood has phenol levels comparable to hardwood. This makes it safe to use. It's great for burrowing, especially if you add some soft hay.😊
I wish I filmed making the cage. It would be very complicated to explain because it was made mostly of some scrap material I had and some old windows I cut up. I plan to make a similar looking cage next year but with proper material and precise dimensions so that people can replicate it. 😊

Wow ur hamster is pretty old! One of my hamster is about 2 years old , she always gets eye infections and she sleeps in a kind of hibernation sometimes (once I fought she died) sadly I don’t even see her to much but ik she is alive because she eats her food
You can wipe your hamster's eyes with saline solution on cotton rounds. It helps with sticky eye. Be careful about the temperature in your house, if it is too low your hamster can go into torpor, which looks similar to hibernation. This is very dangerous because hamster's don't naturally hibernate and it's hard to wake them up from torpor.
I love my hampsters I gave my 10week spirit a cuddle today and a run in his maze twice he met my rats today they love him ps for a minute they forgot I was there ha ha my pets are funny blowing each other kisses
I know this is off topic, but I had a hamster named Milkshake who refused to die She was blind and had a huge tumor, but she still lived to 4 years old.

It's a genuine concern, it's tough to see them get old, especially when you watch old video's of them. You will be there to care for him until it's his time to go. Hopefully, he's still got a lot of fight left in him. 😊

My rats got very old so moved top leavl top half way down so he didn't have to climb I have 2 hampsters one is 10 weeks the other 6 months old
