    Hello from Brazil. I am not so good at speaking english. It is not my native language. It is fascinating to see a country like India to preserve so many diverse languages despite centuries of british colonization. Here in Brazil, the portuguese language dominates all spheres of public administration and daily life. There are very few exceptions. Greetings from Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) to all people of India, regardless of religion or ethnicity.

    People who are advocating Tamil movement should realise that Tamil itself is a dominant language and is a threat to minor languages of Nilgiris and Tamil Nadu. Vaagri Boli, Saurastra, Kodagu, Toda etc are all threatened by Tamil.
    Any major language is a threat to minor languages.

      Exactly... There are state specific languages like oriya in Odisha and bangla in west bengal but within the states their are language specific to communities which are their common tongue which slowly replaced by state language and then slowly hindi and english replaced them.

      Raghunath Ramachandra a small number of people from the small Mauritian Tamil community speak Tamil. I laughed my head off the first time I heard them speak. No disrespect I thought it was more pure than news Tamil in TN. The lady was like Vannakam, enna seidi, Amarungal. Most Tamils in Mauritius who speak little Tamil actually think enna seidi literally means how are you. Of course it may be considered an equivalent because they say that along with the greeting instead of soukyama or nalla irkingla.

      Bhaskara Rao Chukkala They day the same about Hindi or Bihari languages spoken by those who settled in the Carribean. When a community moved from one place to another, if they move as a group they tend to keep the languages the same as long there is no outside pressure to change and as long there is enough interactions with people who speak the same language. Smaller communities tend to preserve their languages sometimes better then the larger ones.

      Actually Sinhalese as a language is closely related to Oriya, not Tamil!! Their Dance styles of Kandiyan dancing is again closely related to Oriya folk dances. The traced the Sinhalese people to be people migrated from the old ancient kingdom of Kalinga. The Tamil people in Sri Lanka are obviously related to the Tamils in India.

    The theory of languages cracking up sounds interesting, there are dialects of English and Spanish that are quite unintelligible, but considering the unifying power of media and technology today, I thought that they wouldn't so easily turn into their own units of language. But who knows. :) Thank you for this video, it was very interesting.

    • @virajvibhute8510
      @virajvibhute8510 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Kauê I thought the exact same thing. In a way he has said it to without realising it. He said language belongs to a community. Well today world is increasingly becoming one community.

    • @jayrad8139
      @jayrad8139 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Viraj Vibhute yeah its really interesting . I heard Noam Chomsky too espoused the same thing that people try to identify with their communities. But considering the advancement in technology in communication and an integrated world slowly small languages will recede into the background and whether it will die or not depends on how long the world can continue its integration. If there are set backs to globalism those languages will resurface. It depends on the success or failures of globalism.

    • @jonhanson8925
      @jonhanson8925 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, really interesting. This idea that languages have a "carrying capacity" and they break up because they get so big that one language can't meet the needs of all the groups that speak it.
      It's a fascinating way to look at things, though I have to say I can't quite wrap my head around why that might be considered a primary reasons for languages diverging rather than isolation.
      For most of human history the only way to hear the way someone from a certain area spoke was to visit the area yourself or to have someone from that area come to you. It makes sense that Latin cracked up because the Roman Empire cracked up and citizens of Rome were no longer traveling as often through the region and using Latin as a lingua franca.
      My ancestors only heard from the people who actually came into shouting distance from them, but here I am listening to the way people speak English in India, in England, in Australia, and all over the world. In turn people in all of those countries seem to be consuming material from the Anglosphere for entertainment or learning purposes.
      As American hegemony fades I could see people turning away from American pop culture and cutting themselves off from that avenue of learning. But on the other hand, as the world grows more connected the importance of having some common language also increases. On one hand, I could see English evolving into a new language in India because of Indians losing interest in content from America and the rest of the Anglosphere. But then, if Indians allow their English to drift too far then they would lose their ability to communicate with people from those countries and with people who use English as a trade language.
      It's a lot to think about, but I'm so glad I am thinking about it. I think that because fate gifted me the English language at birth I can take it for granted. But there's nothing magical about English and some day it will evolve beyond my understanding.

      yash mhatre even I'm a Hindi speaker but let me tell you one of my travel incident I belong from Nagpur ( Maharashtra) and we here communicate in both Hindi and Marathi without any discrimination but when I went to Pune ( Maharashtra) and moment I used Hindi as my preferred one since I'm fluent in it ,the environment turned hostile they were treating me like I'm from other state and was discrimating. How can I be sure of discrimation? I went with a friend who is fluent Marathi speaker. So I hope you got my point and what I meant to say.

      Yes i get your point and respect it, but that is problem about us discriminating based on language. And coz of which we try to hide behind english. Its not about good or bad this is just the situation. All we can do is work together towards a better future and keep out culture alive and not let it die.

      Indian Hindi replaces those words with Sanskrit and Prakrit words along with apbhramsh. Hindi's grammar structure is very well Indian,even now!
      Also, English is not a pure Germanic language. It is an admixture of Germanic+Romantic language along with influences from other groups as well.

      RIPHitchens it's actually calling Hindi, Bengali, Tamil as the same language - Indian. Chinese languages refer to the languages of China, or to be more specific, the Sinitic language family. What is commonly referred to as "Chinese" is actually the Mandarin language.

      @pnydu 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mate ... i dont need explanations or justifications... i understand what is meant, once again ...if he was a chaiwalla or a railway clerk ... i wont raise the issue, but again he is a professor of linguistics ... him refering to "indian languages" is different to calling all languages of india as indian ... thats what he did by saying "chinese" ... cantonese and mandorin may be the most common dialects but thtere are hundreds of distinct dialects in China. I am sure that the people of chine are as proud of thier nation and its heritage as you are of India.
      And had a Chinese professor made a similar statement about Indian languages... i would have commented the same on his/her page.

    07:13 "Chinese, English, and Spanish will crack up and develop into different languages."
    Do not underestimate the power of globalization. There will be a need to communicate to as many people as possible, creating incentive to maintain mutual intelligibility. The prestige feeling many get for knowing a common dialect, the existence of grammar nazis, and the internet being mostly consistent in dialect, also contribute to that. So long as there is a global economy, the languages will not crack. If changes to a language do come, it will affect the language on a global scale.

      Rakesh Kumar the relationship is reverse. Many words and Avestan are from later lartbof Rig Veda (non-family portions) and Zarathustra himself says they come from the homeland of Aryans (India) and the names he mentions as his forefathers are contemporary people mentioned in earlier parts of Rig Veda. To know he Vedic chronology, you need to understand that Vedic Sanskrit is not one and the same throughout but it indicates newer words in the mater parts so it shows that Just the Rig Veda alone spanned through several millennia. Earlier portions of Rig Veda were composed on the banks of Sarasvati and this is where the Dasarajna battle happens with Aryan Purus fighting against non-Arya to the west. Arya here not in a racial sense here but cultural, those who spoke a sister language but it was different enough to be considered a corrupted version of the Vedic language.
      Then the victor claims the lands sending the foes out of their homeland, Kashmir and other regions west and northwest of Haryana and Indian Punjab.
      Then Rigveda mentioned dryingnof Saraswati in the later hymns and movement it people to Indus which becomes the most important river. The lost Saraswati is deified as Goddess of learning as in the banks of this now extinct river Vedas were composed.
      The tribes that loved west are known as Persians spoke the Avestan which is a language to Sanskrit.
      Other tribes that lost also moved out and they resulted in Hurrites and Kassites.
      One cannot say that Sanskrit came from out of India based on he current political setup. Ancient Vedic lands extended to regions beyond current India.
      ProtoIE language may have formed outside of current Indian boundaries but it separated into multiple branches and they moved out of India. The closest branch to ProtoIE is Sanskrit and it can only remain as close to its predecessor because it stayed close to the source. So Sanskrit could have originated near India and moved into present geo-political boundary and the other branches which stayed near by were Iranian, hurrite, Kassite and Tocharian (Tushara). There are mention of many tribes which were sister civilizations in RV and these were the many branches and IE languages. Some moved out to the North to near Russia and some to Anatolia from Kashmir and regions near it to Europe the people who moved took the language and culture.

      Rakesh Kumar even Tamils don’t accept that Tamil is older obviously Sanskrit is older. As it has the oldest records Tamil came much later. Sanskrits earliest scripts the Vedas has words of Dravidian origins. Yet it wasn’t tamil or any other Dravidian language but from a Proto Dravidian Language out of wich Tamil and Later Telugu Kannada and Malayalam appeared. The only thing you can say is that Tamil is the longest Surviving Classical Language in the world wich is with 80 Million speakers world wide still a important language for communication.

Based on the example you quoted about Tanjore Marathi, could the Lambada community be speaking the same language that was spoken during Indus Valley times?

    Let's be realistic language is a tool that enables humans to convey their thoughts and ideas so let's not get sentimental and fight amongst ourselves by saying this language is better than this or that it's just a tool let's not let this create a divide between us. it's natural for only the best to survive just like the quote "survival of the fittest" we have way too many languages which kinda pushes us apart and creates a barrier so it's for the best that they disappear. We need a language that everyone is able to speak ultimately eliminating the language barrier we have. So I guess it's eventually bound to have and it can't be stopped.
