      that's beautiful and sad. great quote.

    • @jslearner
      @jslearner 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The world would actually be a better place if we all could speak one language irrespective of that one language. This quote means nothing, it just sounds nice.
      ADDITION: In your original post you stated that this was ethnocentric. I haven't judged any culture as inferior or superior. I haven't even suggested which language should be the singular language. I purposely avoided that in fact. Maybe you realized this so you edited it out.

    • @melissadavidson5024
      @melissadavidson5024 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@jslearner i don't agree with that at all... better for the ppl whose language was chosen to be spoken? I think it is wonderful we have diversity in this world and a little bit of something different... even if it's just a language... to call our own in a vast universe. Plus it gets ppl interested in learning other languages. That's like saying this world would be better if we only ate Chinese food or listened to classic rock. But i respectfully disagree with ur statement as mine is just an opinion as well. I do understand why it seems the world would be better under one language...i feel it would be easier but not better

    • @jslearner
      @jslearner 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@melissadavidson5024 What you said sounds beautiful, you even used the magic "diversity" word. A common language would allow people to communicate thoughts and ideas. It would allow people to correct misconception and solve social problems without interpretation. It would allow business to operate without the language barrier. There is a reason why there is something called "the language barrier". When you go through the act of interpretation, which I do in a number of meetings throughout the week, there is something lost in that translation. Also, Do you feel like you are eating one type of food when you listen to music/song, just because it is all in one language. An honest answer is "no". It is efficient. These are objective reasons why one language would be better. It is not an opinion. It is truth.

      @@thunder_birdfps8294 it's a curious thing you mention Mainland Africa. The first inhabitants of the canary islands came from the north of Africa, and even after the spanish conquest there are few things that still remains from before, as the names of people and places between many other things. But sylbo is only present on the island of La Gomera as far as i know...sometimes you can hear someone whistling on other islands but you tend to find out that those who whistle were born in La Gomera or have family on it.
      So if Sylbo has the possibility to come from Africa, it amazes me how can remain only on one island among other seven even when its one of the smallest and remote from Africa.

      Why is it hard? If there are say 100 distinct tones/whistles, then each tone can be assigned a letter. Or it could be a logographic writing system like Chinese/kanji. Tones are not so different from the normal English sounds coming from your throat (except of course that it is tedious). If one is possible to write, other should be as well.

      Calm down. I'll believe there's more to bird calls as soon as someone who's actually been studying them has published proof that there is and got it peer reviewed at least twice. But I won't be a guy who hasn't got the first clue about bird calls, watches a video of people talking in whistles rather than words, signs or letters and goes "I bet bird communication is too complex for our human minds to understand and you can't prove that I'm wrong!!".

    I found this video while looking up "La Gomera" upon a suggestion from another viewer. We're on another channel talking about a method of communication used by a fictitious group of Luddites in the video game "The Last of Us, Part II", known as the Seraphites. This viewer mentioned to me that they were influenced by "La Gomera" (not knowing the name of the language is called Sylbo; I had no idea either).
    Later on, I found a post by another viewer who said that the sound designers at Naughty Dog (the developers of the game) wanted to make the Seraphite's whistles more eerie, so they made them more minimalist...and it totally worked.
    This "lost" language is just utterly fascinating, wow. So distinctively unique, for sure. Thanks for posting this! Cheers.
