The mucus like gel in your soaked tiger nuts is glycosylated vegetable protein chains Tom. The glycation of seed proteins is very noticeable in tiger nuts when soaked, same goes for chai seeds. Its purpose is to protect the seed from pathogens when it starts to germinate. HTH.
Thanks for the info. Well, I just spent the last half hour reading about glycosylated veg proteins and seed mucilage. Today's word of the day is mucilage. The research paper I mentioned in the video is linked in the description. While they didn't specifically mention the slime in the paper, since the tiger nuts are so high in starch I assumed it was just starch. Based on what I've read, my current understanding is the seed mucus is primarily made of polysaccharides, with starch being one of the main 3 polysaccharides in plants. www.mdpi.com/1661-3821/2/4/19 . I wasn't able to find any reference to glycosylated veg protein chains in relation to seed mucilage. It seems like starch is the right answer. Am I missing something?
Upon further reading, I did find reference to glycosylated proteins. It appears the composition of seed mucilage can vary widely among different species, with varying concentrations of polysaccharides, glycoprotiens, pectins, etc., but mainly polysaccharides. "Generally, polysaccharides present in the seed/achene mucilage contain pectin, cellulose, hemicellulose and starch, varying in combinations and compositions across different species." www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.01.08.574694v1.full This is all technical biological jargon that the average Joe doesn't care about, but I find it very interesting. Thanks again for the information.
Love to see discussions like these within a fishing channels comment section. Thanks for the great input @chrisdado. I love how you made Tom curious enough to further his research, this is a prime example of how we thrive as mankind!
Good stuff tom! This was like a carp fishing movie . Showing at times you will struggle. It might be the spawn or a plentiful supply natural forage. Once you fished through these tough times it makes the catching that much better. Congrats on the nice commons tom!
Good trips to tag along with. Gotta love new reels. Smooth, quiet, all clicks are sharp. Drags are smooth. Using boilies sure up your work load, having to rebait every fish. Did you catch a grass carp last season? I maybe remember one.
Got to say my man, you inspired me to go back to the simpel way of carp fishing. I used to do all the works to catch a small one. Now i do simplw stuff and catch loads. Thanks man
I had the opposite happen! Last year got all new gear twice. Had a phenomenal season. This year has been rough going. Not gonna buy a bunch new gear for a while though! Glad your curse was broken early!
I have been looking for new spots this spring and have been really dealing with boat traffic as well. Had a boat anchor on top of my bait pile a few evenings ago lol. Weird year so far.😊
In the past I've had good success getting rid of parked boats by blasting some music on my phone. Whatever music you think might be most obnoxious to the guy in the boat. Some gangsta rap or anything in Spanish usually makes them take off pretty quick. Good luck!
Some FIB's put some grass carp in a lake that used to be awesome bluegill fishing when I was in high school. They ended up killing all the fish and starting all over. Screwed up the fishing that we had at the time. I used to live in Denver and they used to put grass carp in the ponds to keep the weeds down. They treated them so they couldn't breed. I would put a leaf on a hook and throw it out to them when they were sucking stuff off the surface and do pretty good.
Right now I'm waiting until it gets dark out because here is a free fishing weekend so there are probably a bunch of people out there fishing...as soon as I started fishing at night I stopped worrying about boats running into my line.
@@OutsidewithTom Bwhahaha, I'm one of those peeps. My training club is International and when I post on the forums I try to post both so the other peeps don't loose continuity trying to figure it out. Not to worry, us state side carpies can't even spell polysaccharides. 🤣
Excellent vid Tom!! The series was cool, it keeps it real and makes it so relatable to us dedicated bankers. I enjoy seeing the water temps, even a good guess helps me judge what's kind'a goin' on in my waters as well. All the little bits and fun you throw in help with me making the 'best' choice, I think 🤔I have been 'off' the water the last two weeks only due to the Holiday and the crazy that it brings, back at it this week!!!! Thanks Tom for all the real stuff. P.S. Love the new green light weight hoodie. SPF?
Glad you enjoy all those little details in the videos! Yeah, that green hoodie will be good for sun protection. I think I was wearing it for gnat protection in this video. Thanks James!
I've caught thousands of Carp in the past few years. When one comes along that doesn't put up a fight, it's REALLY unusual. I always take a look at them for signs of wounds, or sickness. Never find anything. Sometimes it happens, but not very often. Carp are battlers. Born and bred. Not sure what part of the country you're fishing in, Tom. But how often do you see Mirrors and Leathers where you are? On the Madison Chain (Yahara River) and Rock River in Wisconsin where I fish, they're not very common. I'll see 2-3 each season, if I'm lucky. Last year I think it was 4 (out of maybe 750 on the bank), and that was a surprise. I did catch one on Lake Monona 2 years ago that I think would qualify as a leather. NO scales at all, except a row tightly packed along the spinal ridge. Really neat looking fish. Glad I got pictures of it.
Most of the places I fish have overhanging trees that make casting overhead impossible. Most of the time you can't see them in the video. I have better results casting my way. Thanks for watching.
I switched all my carp reels to sougayilang spinning reels. So far they have been excellent reels. Very cheap but well made. Still in a slump though carp a breeding and that's the worst time here to catch one.
Hey Tom, Do you like this 9 foot ugly stik elite over the catfish version of the same rod? I know you have the 7 footers for cats. I have a 6’6” medium heavy ugly stik for carp and the fight on that is way more fun than on the 8’ catfish series medium heavy ugly stik. I did pair it with the 5500 Okuma Bait runner like you mentioned. I might return the 8 catfish and grab the 9 foot elite if you think it’s a worth it for a more fun fight. Cheers, brother!
@@OutsidewithTomthank you, brother. I checked out your gear list before I asked. It is listed as 4000 for the discontinued model but I think in one of your videos I overheard you say 5000. Thank you for clarifying. I think I’ll pair it with the 5500 Okuma since the 4000 Okuma I have is paired with the 6’6 medium heavy ugly stik that you recommended also. I have been catching carp like crazy since following your videos. Thank you for the great and real content. Skunks, catches…all of it. God bless.

Good and fun video Tom, the trials and tribulations of a bank fishermen.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks David.
Morning Tom. Oddly enuf out carping while watching ur video I catch most of mine while watching YT.
Update - 2 absolute toad carp, 1 med carp and a non fighting dink.

I caught a few grass carp last year, but yeah I think only one made the cut on video. You have a good memory!
Only for a few good things. Congratulations.

Good seeing you back on the PB pond. I have an Emcast reel and that thing has been a real workhorse. Great video as always.
Thanks 👍

Here in Iowa, the DNR stocks triploid grass carp in some lakes to control weeds. They're pretty fun to catch.

Definitely one way to avoid the crowds, good luck!
I applaud your dedication ,those carp look hungry,
Thanks for watching.
I have those reels and I love them!
Nice, me too!
It takes a lot of time to do a video, and I appreciate it. I really hope that the fish aren't spawning when I get home. 😂
Thanks Steve, I appreciate your support. Hopefully they are done spawning (or not started yet), good luck!
Good video man. Enjoying watching from the UK 🇬🇧. Tight lines.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
hey tom, 300 kmh is about 180 mph 😂 but you were pretty close. love ur videos keep it up
Haha, thanks. I was just poking fun at the people on youtube who are always stating things in both imperial and metric. Glad you enjoy the videos!

Hi Tom, I enjoy your videos, very educational.
I wanted to ask if you have tried cotton seed
meal or pond fish food as a pack bait?
I haven't tried any of those. Thanks Terry.

Mirrors are very rare here in Iowa as well. Out of hundreds of carp each season, I'll catch maybe one or two mirrors. I've never caught a leather.
Nice video Tom
Thanks!
Hey Tom, i'm wondering why you never cast overhead? In my experience it's way easier getting accuracy and distance that way

No more underwater cam vids?
Coming soon.

I had some but whenever I had a fish over 5 or 6 pounds they flexed and I was afraid the stems would break. Get what you pay for!

Just curious if you’ve tried this 99% rig at a pay-lake? It’s quite a bit different than what we use down in the south.
We don't have paylakes in the North.

I like the Elite better for carp, the Catfish rod is a bit stiff for my liking. But, I don't think you can go wrong with either one.
@@OutsidewithTomI think I’ll grab one. Do you have it paired with a yeah 4000 Daiwa sorry or the 5000?
