    Strange as it sounds, I think both Roger and Gene absolutely nailed their Batman Returns review

    • @davidsavage5630
      @davidsavage5630 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Why is that strange? They weren't very stuffy film snobbish critics. Look up Siskel's positive review of Mortal Kombat. I enjoy that movie but no out of touch critic or snob would praise that movie the way he did. And even say he dislikes video games but enjoyed the movie enough that it made him consider giving Mortal Kombat games a try. They may not have cared much for Batman Returns but they hardly trashed it. It's not a film for everyone..

    Batman Returns was the first movie I saw in a theater without a guardian. Saw it opening night (LOVED IT!) & when I came home from the theater, this episode of Siskel & Ebert was re-airing.
    To love 'Returns' then have the animated series debut a few months later...exciting times! Thanks for posting this; everything came flooding back! 😅

      Batman Returns was No match for the first movie from 1989, that movie was a classic! But Batman Returns was ruined by Tim Burton taking it too far. It wasn’t even a Batman movie, it was a Tim Burton movie. It was literally a repeat of Edward Scissorhands with the Penguin. It wasn’t about Batman

      @@nsasupporter7557 In your opinion maybe. To me, Batman Returns did everything a sequel is suppose to do; upping the ante, the stakes felt higher, etc. I left that theater in '92 feeling exactly how I felt coming out of Chrisopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" in '08; like I had just seen one of the best Batman movies ever & looked forward to a third Tim Burton entry.
      Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman & Danny DeVito's Penguin...c'mon, pitch perfect introductions for an edgier, 90s audience. (no shade to the actors from the 60s camp series) Tim Burton's entire aesthetic kickstarted the modern-day cinematic look of those characters & Gotham City. I'm not taking anything away from Batman '89 cemented "classic" status, I like that one as well, but personally, I prefer "Returns."

    • @nsasupporter7557
      @nsasupporter7557 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FireMadeFleshII dude, FYI most sequels are garbage anyway! I know it’s all based on opinion, but still. Most people know that sequels never live up to the original movie, generally speaking.
      Burton made BR his own movie and took away from Batman. As I mentioned earlier, if you look closely to the plot and pay attention to the designs and costumes, it was literally a repeat of Edward Scissorhands with the Penguin. Hence why I said it was a Tim Burton movie, not a Batman movie. Burton has this annoying infatuation with the villains, he likes them better than Batman. This movie wasn’t even about Batman.
      It was a depressing, disturbing horror movie. But I respect your opinion though

    I think Ebert badly misunderstands Batman Returns. The power of the film is the relationship between Catwoman/Kyle and Batman/Bruce Wayne. Through each other, through their multi-tiered relationship with each other, they each come to realize that they don’t know who they are without the mask, without the persona. This, especially for Kyle, is, once realized, terrifying (the scene at the end when they unmask each other is stirring). They desperately want to connect with each other, but they only way they know how to is via their respective masked alter-egos, but those alter-egos are essentially opposed. The Catwoman/Batman relationship (at least in this movie) cannot be consummated in any way other than the death of one or both. This is a sorrowful realization. Batman Returns is not a great movie, per se, but it is, I think, the best Batman movie.

    • @ricardocantoral7672
      @ricardocantoral7672 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think he was right about the film's construction. As is the case with many Burton films, there are individual scenes that work well but the story construction is practically non-existent. Still, I love the Batman-Catwoman relationship and the older I get, the more I appreciate it. I would take it over the relationships with Rachael and Selina in the Nolan films.
