    These are actually how we receive internet in my area. There is no ISP willing to run cable several miles from house to house so one guy on the edge of town got Gig internet and he just sells you internet for $40 a month and daisy chained a bunch of these together so we can get internet

      yes its legal. I once had a 78Mile ptp link between two mountains to service customers in a remote area. They call them WISP, or Wireless ISP's

    • @ppsarrakis
      @ppsarrakis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      its not legal for private connections to be distributed around.... its on your contract.. its even illigal to give it for free...

    • @gamesofcontent
      @gamesofcontent 7 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Democritus86 if it's in a contract the it is legal. the law voids any contract that contradicts it. therefore if a contract can be written discussing the matter then the law is silent on the issue.
      either way it's not illegal for me to buy it or use it so until they shut his ass down I'm cashing in

    • @ppsarrakis
      @ppsarrakis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      sorry i ment its "illegal" on the ISP's perspective not on the law so preaty much worst thing it can happen is to void your contract,ofc the tax office might want his ass.

      After 78 feet you generally need a permit to put up a tower depending on bylaws. and the larger towers require a pretty significant base and guide wires. i would imagine that they rent or lease the building they work out of further complicating the installation of a tower. More of a pain in the ass thing than a price thing in my opinion for them.

      +Baruch Bacon it would actually be 14.2 because with Internet protocols there are generally 10 bits per byte. SATA also works in a similar way. With my understanding of this it is supposed to allow for less errors with data transmission as the additional bits act as some sort of second check for the data.

    I've done 30-50km links with older Ibiquity hardware before here in South Africa. Works well. Ping does go up obviously. Linus do a proper example. Go climb a mountain or hill that has line of site to your office and show us the results. (alignment is a bitch when you and the other guy is sitting on 2 towers 50m up in the air.)

    • @darkpsion
      @darkpsion 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Francois Botha Yeah they could at least have tested the range in a nice real world situation and not just 50m down the road with $300+ worth of kit, even though the principles are the same.

    • @luizfcavalcanti
      @luizfcavalcanti 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Francois Botha The newer versions of Ubiquiti products have GPS based alignment, you can input the coordinates in both antennast and get the alignment done.

    • @bahnny
      @bahnny 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Luiz Fernando Cavalcanti dos Santos Their GPS stuff sucks.. Go cambium if your gonna use GPS. Ubiquiti's gps based "titanium" systems failed horribly.

    • @luizfcavalcanti
      @luizfcavalcanti 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      evan ricci failed in we hat way? I we work in IT... never had problems. If you're going to say it's bad... provide evidence.

    • @bahnny
      @bahnny 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luiz Fernando Cavalcanti dos Santos There's a reason even ubiquiti isn't continuing the titaninum line. Where to start? Costing wasn't good, they felt that the timed devices were worth more when they should have been focusing on making all their hardware support timing. Deployment? They had no central timing so the benefit of it was lost on them. I believe the edgeswitches tried to address this but chicken before the egg. Software was plagued with issues, Random reboots and session deauth's due to desync'ing. The only thing that they did well, is the units were sturdy as hell. Drop it 200ft off a tower? I'm sure its fine.. Ubiquiti has way better hardware (Power Bridges) and way more stability (normal rocket m5's) with better cpe options (nano bridge/beam?). Timing just doesn't work well with 802.11* it's not what the protocol's for. For PMP your better off using a proper TDD solution (Look at cambium, or mimosa) I can give you a few dozen RMA's and constant tickets with ubiquiti 'maybe we can fix that in another patch' if you want to give me your email, I have about 3k units deployed. I like Ubiquiti as a vendor, but there is a time and place for any tool and ubiquiti's is rather limited.

It's amazing!!!! a local company has used this technology to bring broadband to rural communities. the phone line offers 0.5mbps 👎👎👎 this puppy gives us 30mbps rock solid and we have got rid of the phone line all together. Great technology! means I can watch linus tech tips every day 😊

    You can use iPerf3 to get an accurate bandwidth measurement of what the throughput of the antennas is. You would setup one side in the iperf server mode, in the "datacenter", and then use the iperf in client mode on your laptop. I'm a network engineer, we use this all the time, really good tool.

    Fantastic video proving a LOT of points - thank you very much to LTT
    I had my wifi cut off because I changed bank accounts and Talk Talk didn't even give me the chance to set up a new standing order - so I asked a neighbour if I could use their wifi from their Vodaphone service and they said yeah sure. My little Atom struggled with 2 bars of green on the connection but I did at least get a connection of sorts if I stood at the back door with it open.
    I was pretty angry with Talk Talk and had already made my mind up that having been a customer of theirs for 10 years or more without missing a payment that I would never go back to them so I did a lot of ebay research for prices and internet research for products which might help me. Luckily my neighbour is much closer than 25 kms (just 5 houses away in fact)
    I got a generic 802.11n dongle with an aerial attached to it (non directional) and a 10 metre extension cable (way too long - I needed much less but I didn't know at the time) - the dongle has the Realtek chipset in it, the booster cable has a capacitor in it
    When I got it I taped it to my kitchen back-door window, plugged the usb cable in to it, put the other end of the USB cable into the Atom, ran the software and bingo - from one or two low signal networks available there were literally dozens of 5 bar solid connections available (mostly with pre-shared keys of course so no use to me of course but they were there and thats the point)
    I now (pay and) share my neighbours wifi and he has a couple of other friends on it - he has a 72mb/s fibre optic - he has it set up so we all get around 15 mb/s each for permanent but the box he has is smart and will give as much throughput as available until another user contests it - clever stuff I have no clue how that works but the point is it is never slow, videos don'e end up buffering (except on facebook, go figure ? ) and if he hadn't told me I would have had absolutely no idea at all I was sharing with anyone else
    One of the connections is another friend of mine who lives about 800 yards as the crow flies and he is connected to regular (twisted pair) broadband and asked if i could attach to him to check the connection out, so I entered his password and bingo another available strong connection tested at around 12mb/s or roughly the same as he gets from his router to his laptop which is about 5 yards away. He is up the hill and it is pretty much obstruction (and houses) free
    Right - so the longest most folk would ever need a cable is about 5 meters - get one with the capacitor in it they are only about £1 more - I suggest rigging up some sort of hook system and attaching it with Gorilla tape on the windows where you might want to use the computer so its there right away without having to faff about with tape every time - or maybe even a little stand for it ? It's movable and that's important to remember.
    The reason I think this video is so great is that I am really angry with the amount of money that has been spent cabling Wales - it runs into many many £billions and proves the point that money was a complete waste. This money was paid by the public coffers - not the service supplier - what a complete and utter con that was eh ? Unforgivable especially as I had thought good RF type wifi would be achievable and made mention of it many times before all those £billions were spent.
    I couldn't afford one of those dish things to do a test with so this was really really a great experiment to share.
    Thanks again

    According to an authorized Ubiquiti Networks reseller's site, the Ubiquiti PowerBeam® ac (
    PBE-5AC-500) shown in this video costs US$159.00 _each_, not $150 for a pair as implied by the host. To get a link going may set you back $400, or more, depending on additional cables and antenna mounting gear. The prices aren't a whole lot better than what it cost to set up a homebrew Wi-Fi link 5 to 10 years go, although the package is slick and appears easier to set up.

    For a not free line of sight ( trees etc ) use the 900 Mhz radio transmitters from Ubiquiti
    I,am using them for years , working great The 5 , 3 and 2.7 GHZ are nice if you have a free line of sight
    Depending on the climate where you living in i advise ( humid climate ) gel filled shielded cat cable, standard cables are breathing and in time they are full of condense .
    Most important is keeping the Fresnel open en clean the first meters
    I,am living in the middle of the bush and have a wireless connection over 6 radio transmitters , passing mountains etc to a multi wan router, there are more than 50-clients on this system
    Have fun .

      +Pandonaut Productions Don't want to sound like a know it all however, I must interject. Speedtest.net is not best benchmark at all because it uses port 8080, by default. ISP's have started boosting this as a result, the port has something to do with DSL or dial-up. Testmy.net is a much better and more accurate speed test. It's more relevant because it uses port 80, which is HTTP/web traffic. Also testmy.net lets you do long term testing. EDIT: TIL: testmy.net is not the way to go, the consensus is to just go with speedtest.net

      You're counting the entire link. What matters is the last mile. It's usually several ms. The first hop of my ubiquiti access point takes about 1ms when entirely utilized, or 7ms when fully utilized.
      DSL's last mile latency is usually 2-15msec. VDSL is usually on the lower end of that.

      +oEx0duSo It will let you "bridge" two networks. So if one side had a gateway to the internet and the other side did not then yeah, one side would go to a switch router and as could the other. Think of it like a network wire running through the air, it has to plug into something.

      A meter is basically a yard and a km is basically 2/3 of a mile (since Europeans are only 2/3 as awesome as we are 😎). Pretty easy to remember.

      @svampebob007 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +LimPu people don't realize that some times it's a matter of distance from the ISP that is causing the low speeds, spending more on the fastest package might just end up with them paying for like 20Mbs, the ISP saying they can only deliver up to 15Mbs and them ending up with 12-10Mbs.... been there done that. and ofcourse the nest package deal is 10 or 5 lol.
      so yeah burn the house move to one with fiber already installed.

    My ISP provides me internet via the same point to point WiFi connection. They have a receiver antenna mounted high up on my house. It works well even in bad weather. The transmitting antenna of the ISP is like 3 miles away with lots of trees and buildings in the middle.

    I forgot if it was Detroit but citizens are using these to be provide internet to neighbourhoods that don’t have high speed internet. They were linking the dishes house to house to make a private internet network. So every new customer added a new structure to expand the network. They would also approach the tallest buildings and offer them internet in exchange for mounting dishes.

    Also, for full beans, make sure you select these settings:
    - Wireless > Channel Width=80Mhz
    - Wireless > Aggregation Frames=64
    - Output Power=(as high as needed)
    ...and probably some other tweaks I can't remember. All in all, great devices!

    Looks very similar to what my ISP supplies me with. I am off grid and quite rural. Their system is 5Ghz, and I beam to their AP around 7 km away. Beats my neighbor's satellite internet service by leaps and bounds.

    Makes me want to buy a cabin on a hill somewhere just to get one of these! I actually saw something that looked similar on a house down the street. They were probably beaming from one of the office buildings nearby to the house. Very cool.

    That wifi antenna would be great for people who live on the coast and have their own fishing boats, especially if you set up an actuated gps tracking pivot, so that it is always pointed at you.

    This is amazing, I can't believe it's so cheap! I was just yesterday trying to think of how to set up the wireless to cover the house better, since I have a pretty big house and it gets really bad in some areas. I think this might be really useful. And being able to cover the back yard would be awesome too. I will say that it would have been nice if you had had the technician come out so we could have seen the "right" way to set it up, rather than the "figure it out" way to set it up...

    • @since1876
      @since1876 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now that I looked at the website, it seems like it might not be quite so cheap. But I probably just put a whole bunch of options I shouldn't have. I'll need to look into it a lot better.
