Yeah, instantly when they asked about favorite stages 3 came to mind. Last Blade with the burning building you are fighting in, Samurai Showdown 4 on the shore with the water lapping up to the beach, and KoF 99 with the rain storm. Those stages blew me away back in the 90s.
I was already subbed to her but never knew how she looked until now because she doesn't show her face in her videos and I gotta say, I am not disappointed. She lives up to her moniker.
Feel like the Gouketsuji Ichizoku series always had very underappreciated stage backgrounds. They put entire dance routines in accordance with the music in every stage!!

Baberuthless saying KOF 97 has the best stages made my day! I think so too! KOF 97’s presentation makes the tournament feel like a big deal! The cutscenes of the tournament bracket make it feel like a World Cup tournament.
So according to Terry's bio on the Official SF6 website, this Pao Pao Cafe is in fact a brand new one opened in Metro City and the whole reason Terry showed up. What's a little odd to me is this should be the 4th Pao Pao Cafe, not 6th. There's the original owned by Richard Meyer in Fatal Fury 1, the Mexican branch seen in King of Fighters 94, and Pao Pao West managed by Bob Wilson. Or if we're going by stage appearances, SF6 is at least 7th after Fatal Fury 1, KoF94, Fatal Fury 3, CvS1, KoF13 and KoF15, as well as the Pao Pao exterior stage in KoF11 and bizarre re-modeled stage in KoF94 Re-Bout. So I guess they're throwing out CvS1, KoF11 and 94 Re-Bout in that count? (Or are they counting the cafe(s) that burned down but were re-built?)
Definitely noticed how alot of MK1's stages were going for picture-esque beauty more than anything else, even if the dungeon stage is pretty gnarly. That game is tonally schizophrenic in every way; they mentioned how polite the characters are outside of the fatalities but I also think the tag system makes things weird with characters teaming up with sworn enemies to perform brutalities on their kid or whatever. Just feels strange, like every fight is some bizarro dream match. You could say the same for KOF and Marvel teams but it feels extra egregious with MK
9:10 I'm surprised Matt even asked Justin and Max about where to find AKI when they don't even play World Tour mode... And they're wrong. There's a quest line that where you need medicine, it leads you to FANG from SFV and he sends you to China to meet AKI and AKI only agrees to help because you've got a letter from FANG. So yes Mr Mateo McMusculoso, the current Chinese restaurant stage is not in metro city, it is indeed in China. Good job
For the record, Ken's SFA2 stage is a costume party. Those are not the _actual_ Capcom characters in the background, but randos in costume dressed up as them. In terms of backgrounds, NG/2I >>> 3S.
One of my fav stages is the Cairo Clocktower from Jojo's. It's just a great perspective with the city roofs bending in the background, beautiful colors, and crazy pixelart.
Love this episode as I'm also a big fan of fighting game background stages. Sometimes when I watch matches, I'm more focus on the background stages than the ongoing fight. I was never a fan on the Darkstalkers 3 side of the building stage until I realize what it was. Birdie's Alpha 2 stage I think is the same rrestroom in the Street Fighter 5 train station stage based on the poster shown when you knock out an opponent at the far left side of the screen.
In light of the primary topic of this episode, I’d like to namedrop the channel Fists Will Fly, at This Location. They have playlists upon playlists of fighting game stages without the fighters so you can just watch what all goes on for a couple of minutes or so. Favorite stages from a Capcom game that wasn’t mentioned, Tatsunoko vs Capcom? For me, it’s gotta be Yatterman’s Workshop, Orbital Systems Ring Cargo Bay, and the Uncharted Region of China. All of them have such great music and background elements in Ultimate, and China has the secret stage transition where you fall and are fighting on the broken section of the bridge you were on as it’s floating down a river. Then there’s MvC3 with the Daily Bugle with all its floats, the Hellicarrier at night with the dogfight, Tricell Labs with the containment breach when you deliver a ground breaking blow as all the glass shatters, the alarms are blaring, and the mutants are crawling everywhere, Bonne Wonderland with the servbots building the two snowbots over time, and Days of Future Past with the Sentinels shining searchlights looking for the fighters with the wanted poster in the back of all the fighters who got got or are on the lam. MvC3 may not have had the most diversity since a lot of them are just day/night variants, but the differences still make them pretty interesting and visually appealing, particularly the ones with a lot more dynamics in the background.
There is one stage ai always think about. I wanna say it’s in KoF 95’ or 97’. And I’m going to be so vague. It’s outside, and with each round the sun starts setting, the street lamp comes on. And it starts raining. The first time I played it, both my and the CPU team were both on our last team member. I just remember getting a real sense of TIME and exhaustion. The sun had set, it was pouring, and all the defeated team mates were sitting on the sidelines in the rain. It really drew me in

I know they're plain but I've always loved D.Dark's stage in EXpA and Cinder's stage in KI1. fighting in the ankle deep water in Dark's stage with that chill but mysterious jazz theme was awesome and Cinder's theme just paired so well with his stage like "YEAH MOTHER FUCKER WE'RE FIGHTING ON THE ROOF OF AN APOCOLYPSE DESERT FACTORY LETS GOOOOOO!!!"
If we are talking about underrated fighting game stages,my pick would be Hon-Maru from Tekken 4. Hands down the best in terms of a intimate/honorable yet brutal 1v1
I hate that MK Armageddon has my favorite stage fatality. It's in the tower stage where an uppercut can drop a fighter through the floor. The fatalitee gets pit-spiked... descends onto four blades that cut off their limbs... and then a rat (pre-pizza rat) just grabs one of the legs and leaves in the lowest resolution possible with no animation. It's beautiful.
I dream that one day, one miraculous day, SNK will finally fix Pao Pao Cafe's name to Pão Pão Café. It hurts my eyes and ears, being a native BR Portuguese speaker and seeing and hearing this being misspelled for almost 33 years of my life.
Thankful for BabeRuthless calling out Alpha 3's music (with an assist from Justin). Probably a big reason I don't vibe with 3 anywhere near as much as 2.

KI was the first game where I was really captivated by the stages.
