I don't see any comments (nor did it get mentioned in the video) about one huge potential advantage for this type of device - the ability to enable someone to get in via the app, but limit that availability to weeks, days or hours - or to revoke it at any time. It's a whole lot better than leaving a spare key under the doormat.
The app log out is actually just for extra security if you think about it, if you lose your phone or someone steals it they would have access to your home so be grateful that they added that feature
Then put a PIN code on the app like you do with your bank or if have a fingerprint scanner on your phone use that and to be fair who has their phone unlocked nowadays anyway most phones need your fingerprint just to get into it. That's a BS excuse it's lazy
NUK3MOOSE 8 Alexa is pointless on this lock as u have to lift the handle to engage the patches and then it would be locked anyway if u just lock the latch then it’s not secure
What this means is that Yale never offered to cover the lock for free so now he is going to give a shit review.. even though he has not had a bad word to say about it on his other channel

I was gutted when Yale replaced the Key Free Connected with this model. Out with the key pad (super useful if you airbnb your place) and out with the override key (super useful because these locks do break down). I've had five Key Free connected locks installed over the years at various places. I would never have this one installed.
As a cyber security researcher and pentester, I can probably tell you a good reason why they may have decided to skip “global” authentication/communication. While it is convenient - this opens a door for potential hackers (no pun intended). If someone was able to gain access to your account, they can access your cloud devices/locks. The data would need to be stored somewhere, and on your network is where it can start (could get nasty if they don’t implement the right security.) Another way could be key catching. Tricking the device into giving its authentication token (to match with yours) to a rouge device. As you described, it communicates via Bluetooth so sharing IS happening. Of course, there are ways RFID key authentication can be captured and etc. but they are more deterrent given the tool would cost a pretty penny and they’d need to be close to you. Don’t get me wrong, there can be great security features that can negate or harden the vulnerabilities I describe. Overall this could just be a feature they weren’t too keen on anyway.
why hack it thought the internet If he did't have that bit of metal around the letterbox, anyone could just pull the handle down from the outside to open the door. You might need a hock of some kind. I think the reason they don't have global auth might be because all the key are alike. As we say stop putting shit on the internet
Of course, the only people that a door lock will keep out is honest people. Any locksmith will be able to bump their way into any regular UK multipoint lock in about 45 seconds. This is a device for convenience, not security.
@@ACERASPIRE1 no he was using Locksmiths as a metaphor for people who are skilled with locks and a able to open locks easily and By the way it's rude to call people names if u don't understand what they are saying!!!
The Lock is a great piece of kit, ive owned one now for over 2 years and if you have the Yale Smart Home Hub, then you can unlock the door from anywhere in the world so not 100 % sure why he was saying that the lock cannot be opened when you are away as it can, i do this regular for my parents when they forget to bring there fob. I would highly recommend the lock but if you are not good with your hands and good with tech, might be best asking someone with know how to fit the system and set it up for you, The instructions are good and i set my own lock up, I am a robot technician as part of my trade so understand these type of devices Hope this helps and please ignore most of this guys bad points, the lock is normal size on the outside and is very sturdy looking - Build quality is nice
If you have the Smart Home Hub are you able to check that the door is locked remotely? I was thinking about getting a smart lock because I keep worrying that I've forgot to lock the door when I go to work, so being able to check remotely would be perfect.
I preferred the other model that Yale released for a short while around the same time. It had a digital keypad and you could unlock your door remotely and assign a temp pass code for the carer to use. You could then change the code and text the carer a new one. I preferred that method, rather than giving out key fobs.
They still make that one. It's only for the night latch locks, so it won't work on a PVC door with multiple bolts, but it'll do for my needs as I want it on the door on the inside of the porch.
Do you still have the lock fitted or do you use something else, I’m looking at buying one but I have pvcu doors and this looks like the only smart lock available.
It uses a different form of communication that does not get stopped by RFID blockers, this is because credit/debit cards use RFID and the key uses NFC. And or there is an outer pocket that he put the chip into
So running on batteries that lasts 6 months is a bad thing? What would the alternative be? Wiring the door to the mains? I agree signing into the app everytime would be annoying, but why say not to buy it because the app isn't good despite talking about using NFC tags to negate the need for the app.
Alex, I agree with your comments on this lock and have been VERY disappointed. I moved from Thailand where I had a Yale digital lock installed by Yale themselves and it was very good indeed. Yale do not provide such good local service here in the U.K. and I had to get a local locksmith to install it. This took two attempts! Not easy at all as some videos on this product suggest. It has worked adequately for several months but now the music it plays on every operation has suddenly changed and it refuses at times to open with the fob or with the key card. Have you noticed any changes to the tones played by the lock recently? The APP works occasionally but not now.
I've never come across this guy before, not a good review. If I were him I wouldn't bother reviewing home automation systems again. The lock isn't that big batteries last way longer than 6 months the app doesn't log you out very often The App is so simple - open app, touch lock - door unlocks. The speaker is designed to let you know when you have not locked it when you're inside. When you're outside, you know its lock due to the big red light on the front. There is various network solutions to Yale Home security systems and Smart Things that can be added if you want.I've chosen not to add network connectivity as I prefer longer battery life. My Recommendation - one of the best smart locks on the market. Very happy with it!
I bought one of these when it dropped from the standard price of £180 (on amazon) to 150. Firstly, so long as you aren't an idiot, you understand that the size of the physical lock on the front of your door has no relationship to the safety of said lock. Secondly, the app is now fine, no logouts etc. Thirdly, you can "unlock" it as you are walking to the door, you just have to press the top of the outside lock when you arrive, as you would if using a key fob or nfc chip on phone. I wish I never watched this video, it put me off buying the lock for around a year till it was on sale.
My app is always logged in (my phone is secure enough). 2 things.. if you’re a ‘tech geek’, why not have smartthings and a z-wave module. Then you could unlock your door before you reach it. Orrrr.. Load up the app just before reaching the door.. takes all of 2 seconds. Tap the door, press the button on the app. Done.
So, is this lock any better now, was on the verge of purchasing one .. I have a robot hoover too... so REALLY sat on the fence on this one, and theres cheaper locks out there, but you'd think Yale would of smashed this ?!
The support for this lock is terrible. When I lock my door the close chimes used to play once to confirm the door is closed but now it's started to chime continously at 30 second intervals. To stop it I either have to turn the internal knob clockwise once or wait unti it eventually stops itself, usually after several attempts and no it is not the low battery chimes it is the closed door chimes in case you ask. Yales trouble shoot manual and support are the very pits.
Good review. but now that it's the end of 2019, have they updated the app or improved other features? Please let your users know. I'm trying to buy a lock like this one but so many to choose from, I'm bit confused. The pricing is terrible here is the US for these locks.
If you were to change the lock, what would you choose? The locks on offer in England are limited. Do you think it is worth importing something like the Nest x Yale from the US?
I don't have the issue with having to log in every time although it is a bit horrible on iPhones as if your iPhone is not up to date the app crashes everytime you open it
So no keys to forget... but you might forget your phone, lock the door behind you, and then... uh oh... :( for me, the fob is the way forward but I feel that this might need to become some sort of wearable tech like a fitbit with it built in or a ring or something like that.
HUGE flaw. your outside and a friend wiggles your handle (or a kid) and your phone is inside. No Problem. Go to the store, get a 9v battery and smash a window open to get in. :D Three ways to unlock, and NFC, NFC or NFC. BRILLIANT
Any update on this lock Alex? Did Yale ever improve the app or did you go down a different smart lock? Maybe the Eufy Smart Lock Touch is something to review?
As far as i know, the majority of doors in the UK (especially newer doors) are UPVC doors which have a multi-point locking system, so deadbolt locks aren’t compatible, and this yale model is the only one i am aware of which is compatible with UPVC doors
Thanks for the review dude. For £200, I want the door to unlock and swing open for me as I approach with it saying "Welcome Marlon". Now that is the future. This is a complicated, expensive replacement for something that works almost the same way as a key but requires batteries.
I have one of these locks fitted and have a remote control which operates like a car remote, I can open the lock from 10 meters away and it remains unlocked for 30 seconds. I also have a fob and card key if required but the remote is far easier but costs extra.
Great review Alex👍 so it’s been 2 years since this review have Yale listened to your points and improved the app yet? Also this lock has been around now 3years!!! This in the tech world is a dogs age and surely they are looking at updating how it works wirelessly etc maybe an L2 may be on its way or maybe with these big traditional companies like Yale and honeywell they work far to slow for the progressive new companies like nest and ring updating products every year.
the YALE card is not exactly inconspicuous. if monkeyface's wallet is stolen with his drivers license in it and the yale card, it could easily be a few hours before he notices, giving the thief time to make off with his garish wares
I had a fort, the app is supposed to be difficult, sounds to me its for security reasons least you have a back up on your telephone hand set. WiFi could potentially recode a card from the Internet maybe.. don't know few smart people around. The key fob is your fast access key but having the app in case you've lost the fob will make it a grate idea to get access again no? Hope this made sense lol. I went a brought one then watched this video. Thanks
This guy is clueless. Also he recommends it and bangs on about it in his vlog and yet now doesn’t recommend it. His reviews are also pretty crap, I don’t know why or even if anyone takes them seriously, I certainly wouldn’t listen to this fool if I was looking to buy something. I have to laugh when he calls himself a tech geek and tries to back that up with the fact that he has a robot hoover, seriously? His tech geekiness is limited to doing “setups” and putting led strips everywhere. He can’t even set up his IKEA lights properly.
Totally valid point, if the technology is slower then why spend the money, I would also find the batteries an issue, but to solve that would need a electric latch release type system, which is a professional installation so more money
The major flaw with this lock is the thumb turn on the inside. If you have glass panels in your door, smash the glass, reach in unlock, open door. Or if you have a letter box, someone with small hands will get their hand in and unlock the door.
I got mine about two weeks and the handle on the inside is not opening the latch, it moves but basically doesnt open the latch, I think its broken inside, like me.
Thanks for the review buddy, great timing as I've been thinking of getting one of these. Could you revisit this with all the available add ons please as think it'd be interesting. I, like you would need to be able to unlock it remotely and would like it in conjunction with nest hello. Keep up the great work :-)
But if bluetooth opened your door while you were in proximity, rather than having to press a button, surely there would be no way to keep it locked while you were near it. You'd be well down the road before the house would be secure. Anybody waiting around the corner would just open the door and walk in.
Great review, mad how big companies like Yale still don’t get some the basics perfected. Yale should have used Apple wallet as access the key part somehow
I don’t Take what you say with a grain of salt because you speak a lot of Sense Alex your review was not negative but honest and positive and from every view point where every be weak or strong About the lock So STOP putting down ur Review good One ☝️
On the Yale advert video the lady unlocks the door from her work desk, is this not true? according to your video you have to be within a Bluetooth reception distance
Not secure. Easy to get locked out with a touch of a handle. Someone finds your wallet (or takes) and goes to return it and BAM doors are open. whoooo hooo
Cleron Powell - The bluee tooth key that is on the keys automatically unlocks the doors. Anyone that has that, or the one from the wallet, It would unlock the door for whomever has the fab.
Don't leave an NFC card for your house in your wallet along with a driver's license that has your address! Just buy an RFID sticker and put it on the inside of your phone case, then no more complaining about the app
Alex you need to buy the z wave module and a Samsung smarthings hub so it can work with alexa and google assistant and apple watch all with voice control

If it's bad why do u have it on your own door and say how cool it is on your vlogs?
What if it malfunctions? How do you get in?
were u made from the parts from the off cut bin?
ITS SO OVEREXPOSED I HAD TO LOWER MY BRIGHTNESS!
Nice one thanks, I was half interested in buying one of these. Nfc tag is handy though.
Love the voda but please stop talking. Like your on “through the keyhole” just speak normally
the app has had loads of updates since, it logs in fine now with a fingerprint/touch id
Three ways to unlock, and NFC, NFC or NFC.
Look who uped their production quality!
My house uses Yale - Me, Mam and Dad all have the Yale app and it keeps us all logged in.
You are the very epitome of consumerism.
the YALE card is not exactly inconspicuous. if monkeyface's wallet is stolen with his drivers license in it and the yale card, it could easily be a few hours before he notices, giving the thief time to make off with his garish wares
Did you even buy this lock or did mummy actually buy it
The major flaw with this lock is the thumb turn on the inside.
Keep up the great work :-)
“HEY GUYS... I snuck in an innuendo at 2:15” phnar phnar
My lock locks by lifting handle too my handle was free with door lol
audio is all over the place as well...
But if bluetooth opened your door while you were in proximity, rather than having to press a button, surely there would be no way to keep it locked while you were near it. You'd be well down the road before the house would be secure. Anybody waiting around the corner would just open the door and walk in.
My door lock is the exact same as this just not digital, lift the handle and it locks fully and then you have to get the key to unlock it, easier
Great review, mad how big companies like Yale still don’t get some the basics perfected. Yale should have used Apple wallet as access the key part somehow
yeah cos we all have apple devices
@@leew8812 yeh exactly
I don’t Take what you say with a grain of salt because you speak a lot of Sense Alex your review was not negative but honest and positive and from every view point where every be weak or strong About the lock So STOP putting down ur Review good One ☝️
The Yale keyless has a keypad. So you don’t need anything to get back in-just a finger. It’s no longer made.
A back step.
Hi Alex, Would you recommend the app now with the recent improvements?
try using the Yale Assure Lock SL much much smaller and better smart lock, with better options , try the AUGUST model with it , good luck.
"No one has mentioned how big my lock is......" oi oi :D
I busted a laugh on that when I heard that too!
don't you have a stabilizer for the camera ??? It's shaky...
On the Yale advert video the lady unlocks the door from her work desk, is this not true? according to your video you have to be within a Bluetooth reception distance
Is there Apple shortcut available for this yet? Would like to see an update with the bridge?
Nothing wrong with the L1 mate...works a treat for my family and friends..
37% of reviews on Amazon are 1 star. That makes it complete 💩
Not secure. Easy to get locked out with a touch of a handle. Someone finds your wallet (or takes) and goes to return it and BAM doors are open. whoooo hooo
I want you to read your comment again.... If someone finds or takes your keys they could do the exact same thing?
Cleron Powell - The bluee tooth key that is on the keys automatically unlocks the doors. Anyone that has that, or the one from the wallet, It would unlock the door for whomever has the fab.
@@tompeters4234 anyone who has your keys can unlock your door! Your comment is completely irrelevant!!!
@@mikedinni6318 oh wow! Now you understand!
so, I am currently looking for something like this to buy for my house. What would you recommend?
Discounted this due to no finger print reader. Looking at a Simpled lock instead.
Don't leave an NFC card for your house in your wallet along with a driver's license that has your address! Just buy an RFID sticker and put it on the inside of your phone case, then no more complaining about the app
Did you ever buy a different door lock if so can you make a video?
He’s telling everyone how to get in his house
snab his wallet !! Or phone. May as well call his house FaceBook Safe.
Thought you found a way to hack it, these locks are not bad at all, fairly secure as you'd expect from Yale. Can't see why you are slating it so much?
Alex you need to buy the z wave module and a Samsung smarthings hub so it can work with alexa and google assistant and apple watch all with voice control
Do not buy if you dont live in Britain. The fixed distance 92mm for the mortise is only used in Britain or maybe EU. I got a set for 20 dollars and could not fit or find a mortise even from Yale for this lock
