Imagine being castrated with no anesthesia to be a palace guard. Then your eyes ripped out. You heal, now you get skinned. Then you get crucified. That's rough and brutal.

The worst part is that crucifixion is much worse than people think. You weren't nailed with your arms out like Jesus, your arms were nailed above you and you couldn't breathe so you had to pull yourself up from your nailed in hands just to be able to breathe. Even worse, you weren't 10 feet in the air, you were eye level so people could spit on you as they walked by.
Not as bad as watching Noble Son (2007)

*Fun fact:* The crucifixion of the 400 roman slaves was depicted in the Steven Saylor's novel "Empire", in which a Roman senator, convinced by his Christian brother, desperately tries to save the slaves. It is quite heartbreaking the way in which he ends up failing them. The use of Christians as human torches is also represented in the novel in a quite disturbing way, being the satisfaction of Nero and his friends for believing that they are truly doing justice and the enjoyment of the plebs with the horrible executions the most unpleasant thing to read there

@@goodoldbubba6620You should definitely read it, along with the other two novels of the Trilogy, "Roma" and "Dominus". They tell the history of the city through the eyes of the Pinarii/Potitii family from the duel between Hercules and Cacus on the Aventine in 850 BC. until the Christianization of the Empire by Constantine the Great. It's a pretty awesome Trilogy!

Actually, the crucifixion was due to Spartacus's rebellion running into an unsuspecting army that took credit for the capture despite the other general chasing them doing all the work. The general of the army that took credit crucified them to send a message and show power
(This is according to more common research but I love Empire since I read it a while back)

I think the answer is that people haven't really become better but have learnt how to hide their evil or don't act on their evil thoughts due to fear of being caught.
