Kai o Nehe is a new mini-series where rangatahi Māori try the delicacies of their ancestors.
Up first is tītī, also known as muttonbird. It’s a delicacy from the deep south of Aotearoa that has been harvested and enjoyed by tīpuna for hundreds of years.
These days iwi from Rakiura (Stewart Island) have the sole right to harvest tītī from the islands around that area.
For a long time kuia and koroua have enjoyed and devoured some pretty interesting delicacies across the country.
But do we still hold them in such high esteem today?
And can rangatahi in the 21st century hack the full on flavours of traditional kai?
This is part of our reo Māori series, Ohinga, created by Mahi Tahi Media, with funding from Te Māngai Pāho.
Stay tuned for a new episode every week.

Ahh so sad for these Rangitahi🤦 I just discovered titi a couple of years ago - MY FAVOURITE! Pay whatever they ask it’s DELICIOUS 😋 BUT - if you don’t like crispy fat on mutton roasts and fatty well toasted lamb chops then muttonbirds are not for you 😂 fresh unsalted birds in the pressure cooker 20mins in salted water then sprinkled with salt (be generous) and grilled on the bbq until the fat is crispy 🥳 I celebrate that little birds life with ever savoured mouthful - no one ever feels that way about chicken 🙄

Men don't even supposed to catch the muttonbirds unless they have to the woman catch them and the men work them, that's what I heard back when there were more of them.

Hink these kids had too much maccas and burger king, to appreciate the subtle more reflective nuances of our ancestral cuisine, this was not food you could pop down the shop and pick up ,to enjoy this food you had too work for it ,you had to hunt it down kill and process it, prepare it for the table ,pray over then eat ,you were taught about tapu regarding the hunt like not taking pregnant females or only taking what you need ,and the karakia to tangaroa,or tane mahuta for what we have taken ,,,,,any way guys i wanna see your dreaction to koura mara and not the one in coconut milk either,,the one in a buried bag for a week then shaken contents in a bowl with lemon juice ,onion ,green chilli and salt /pepper
