wow the outfits are OUTFITTING this video I'm still watching but just wanted to comment that I appreciated hearing about Allison's journey and decisions around credentialing in the mental health field. I recently earned my MD and decided to not get credentialed to practice. There's a lot of good work being done in both the fields of mental and physical health by people who have decided to take less conventional routes. It sounds like this option fits well with you. I'm still figuring out what fits best for me. I'm excited to hear more about this development! I'm intrigued!
Since you've been to grad school, why wouldn't you do additional training to be a couples therapist (as someone who is also working towards registration as a therapist)? There's a reason why therapists have all these supervision requirements... there is a lot of harm that can happen and having someone with more experience to check in with is really important. I get the issues around self-disclosure, but therapists can self-disclose, they just can't make the session about them. Also, the reason therapists are more of a guide is to build autonomy in the client.
probably it has to do with therapists’ low pay (at least in the beginning) and all the red tape with insurance. I’m sure a coaching business is much simpler in many ways, I don’t blame her.
also Alison 3:48 I will say recently my therapist asked for me to connect with her more about my spirituality and I said I didn't feel comfortable talking about it more with her cause she wasn't also sharing her experience with that, whereas when I go to meditation group or speak with my meditation coach they do share and it helps me feel connected about our experiences in a way I can't do in therapy
Great question! Nothing and that's the beauty of it. We can touch, if we're qualified. I know a Polish coach who is also a licensed psychologist and published writer. I know a BDSM-niched fin-domme who was recently featured on Allure Magazine. I offer my clients with a meditation at the beginning of every session to self-regulate for clarity. We pinpoint what the client actually wants through the PLISSIT/MEBES model can provide guidance to an essual concern, such as LD (low desire), SDSD (social dating and sex deficit/fancy word for inexperienced or insecure), and with my BS in biology Minor in human sexuality studies, multi-certified sex educator AND ess working, I am able to help those who want to heal their essual trauma. I'm grateful for my clients, mentors, and peers!
Is this only for romantic relationships, or would you also consider coaching people struggling in queerplatonic relationships, platonic partnerships, or other personal relationships? (Not that I have any of the above, just curious!)
I am almost certain I'll be hiring Allison one day! I'm not in a relationship right now so I don't really need it but based on my last relationships I'm sure issues will come up one day that Allison will be a great person to help me work through. Help with communicating my mental health issues and needs probably would have been really helpful in my previous relationships 😅
Coaching is about where are you today and looking forward to the future, instead of therapy which is digging into the past and "working" towards a different version of yourself. Coaching takes you as you are today
Congrats Allison on your next career chapter!
I've never been this early to anything in my life, had an urge to watch old JBU videos, what a gift! Go Allison!

What kinds of ethical oversight is there in lieu of a professional license?

I mean she’s not doing therapy, she’s doing niche coaching and branding it as coaching which is different from therapy

There are therapy models that also focus on the present and future. It doesn’t always dig into the past.
