This is such musical theater porn. The delivery, the technique, the way their voices blend, the way even their vibrato is perfectly in sync. It's just perfect.
Am I not sensitive clever well mannered considerate passionate charming as kind as I'm handsome and heir to a throne? You are everything maidens could wish for, then why no, then why no, the girl must be mad. You know nothing of madness, til your climbing her hair and you see her up there as your nearing her all the while hearing her ahahahah.
I absolutely love the subtle characterization the actors show with their body language. You can tell that Cinderella’s prince is more formal and reserved by his quick, tight movements while Rapunzel’s prince is more laid back or “wild” from his more exaggerated movements. Fantastic acting from both of them!
Exactly! But Cinderella’s prince is the future king so yeah you can imagine he’s being prepared for it. While the brother is the second son and can take a more laid back approach.
This is one of the best examples of how much funnier a scene like this is when the performers play the most ludicrous lines as though they are absolutely serious. Neither of them clowns for even an instant, no matter how funny the line is.
@@francescapatti2934 they were not talking about that. when they ripped open their shirts they were still acting dead serious. it's about when actors "act" the funny lines instead of just saying them
To me there is no better duet in the history of musical theater. Both of these men, these actors and musicians, are absolutely phenomenal performers. The material is brilliant, the story is fantastic, it’s relatable In spite of the fact that they are princes in a fantasy realm. I enjoy this piece so much, and if I ever audition for a musical this is the piece that I will use. If I can perform at half as well as these guys I should be a shoe in. Great stuff.
I've looked at a couple versions of this song, and this is by far the best. Many seem to perform this number as the two competing, but this one does it more as the brothers sharing the same simple mindset. A perfectly done duet.
Although I thought the movie was freaking wonderful and I enjoyed more than the production I saw on stage, had every scene had this style of acting on film, it would have sucked. Stage acting is different than film acting. The film did it great cuz the acting was able to be theatrical and stay within the limits of believable acting for film.
Brian, I agree. The movie was a disappointment for me, but this scene was SO outrageously different (and better) compared to every other scene that it seemed like an entirely different film altogether! If the entire movie had this sort of comedy laced into it, I probably would have felt differently about it.
One of the Princes: "Agony... far more painful than yours!" *the other gives him a 'Bitch please' look* XD Tell me I'm not the only person who noticed that they're trying to say that their pain is more hurtful than the others while giving the 'Bitch please, I'm more wounded than you are' look?!
I went to a college performance of this and the voices were so bad I had to leave!!!!! The orchestra also did not tune up to the piano. ALL WRONG EVERYTHING!!!
Relax the back of your throat. Now relax it more. Make the rest of your mouth as big as possible -- no matter what syllable you're singing, you want a really broad resonant space for this. And then sing Agony. Keep relaxing your throat and it'll turn out well.
LYRICS: [CINDERELLA'S PRINCE] Did I abuse her Or show her disdain? Why does she run from me? If I should lose her, How shall I regain The heart she has won from me? Agony! Beyond power of speech, When the one thing you want Is the only thing out of your reach. [RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE] High in her tower, She sits by the hour, Maintaining her hair. Blithe and becoming and frequently humming A lighthearted air: Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah- Agony! Far more painful than yours, When you know she would go with you If there only were doors. [BOTH] Agony! Oh, the torture they teach! [RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE] What's as intriguing- [CINDERELLA'S PRINCE] Or half so fatiguing- [BOTH] As what's out of reach? [CINDERELLA'S PRINCE] Am I not sensitive, Clever, Well-mannered, Considerate, Passionate, Charming, As kind as I'm handsome And heir to a throne? [RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE] You are everything maidens could wish for! [CINDERELLA'S PRINCE] Then why no-? [RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE] Do I know? [CINDERELLA'S PRINCE] The girl must be mad! I'm Cinderella's Prince and one of my best friends are Rapunzel's so it's so exciting to perform it. It's just so hard to hold in laughter, but it's such a fun song!
The both of them do this song the greatest amount of justice I have yet seen, both of their timings were very comical & they sounds clear as a bell together :) Fabulous
DogsWhoHuntLions Lol I'm curious how you came to that conclusion. Also, for someone trying to insult me, you're low enough to like your own comment since no one else would. XD
I just had a thought, why do you say they're complaining about the woman they want? They're complaining about not being able to be with them all while competing to be the one with the worse woes. I don't see how they're bashing the women in any way.
ZachJ367 I'm mostly referencing to Agony (Reprise). They're also sorta complaining about their situation, like how Cinderella runs away and how Rapunzel is basically isolated from the world.
I saw the original production 5 times on Broadway. All with Robert Westenberg, once with Dean Butler (Little House on the Prairie) as Rapunzel’s Prince. For me this all about the pristine cutoffs. Just perfect!

Hahaha I love this song
"Ah, yes. I believe this dressing room will suffice for CHUCK WAGNER!"
this version of the song is more elegant while the other version from 2014 has more emotion partly for the sound quality and scenery

They look like they could be Hans's brothers.
***** Perhaps they are. They are brothers themselves and married into a throne.
I'm sure Hans was modeled after the stereotypical "Prince Charming"

Their voices blend together so perfectly at times during the song it sounds like one person is singing! Bravo!

The current Broadway "production" guys sing this song with absolute CAMP, and it ruins it.
I disagree I really liked them being clowns and ripping open their shirts dramatically in the movie tbh😂

100% agreed. That was the best part of the movie.
Agreed! Best part and sadly, the only part I laughed at. I wish the movie had more humor and camp.

There's an awful lack of shirt-ripping in the stage musical.
🤣🤣
I live for this comment
The shirt ripping is what gets me most and I live for it 🤣
I'm sure the costumer disagrees with that, though.
In real life Robert Westenberg married his Cinderella from this production.
🥺🥺🥺🥺
Yep. Kim Crosby.
RIP Stephen Sondheim. Us mere mortals are so grateful to have lived in your presence

This and the reprise are THE FUNNIEST songs in the entire musical.
Chuck Wagner is Rapunzel's Prince, and Robert Westenberg is Cinderella's Prince.
***** Robert Westenberg is married with Kim Crosby. Not Chuck Wagner.
***** Yes, they did, and they have two wonderful children. Worked with Kim Crosby in Guys and Dolls and she is a GEM!

The movie was terrible, except for this scene. They got it perfectly. Chris Pine was hilarious.
