I don't know much about sign language, but it seems that her translator also deserves a huge round of applause. He is a mental athlete! She was talking so fast and he could not only translate, but also convey her humor and emotions so well, he makes it look so easy !
Yes but no more than any other interpreter, interpreter of french or Chinese. It’s such an impressive skill, to translate while listening/watching the next sentence
He is a great interpreter, but also he has been working with Marlee for about 30 years now. They know each other very well, which helps.
I'm wondering how expensive it is to include the interpreter as part of her appearances, does he get a percentage of her fee or does the show pay him for his appearance?
Jack is extraordinary and they’ve been working together since Children of a Lesser God came out, and he is also her producing partner, so he understands how she communicates and has been vital to her work.

I'm glad they set up the interview this way. I used to get so irritated when the interviewer would ask Marlee a question and then look at the interpreter as they answered. I was like "Why aren't you looking at Marlee? She's the one talking!"
This was the way it should be, Stephen focusing on her.
And they kept the camera on her for the whole answer. People who sign got the full answer. Shows often cut away from a deaf speaker, and I've read that it's like when hearing people listen to a staticy radio.

Jack has been with her during her entire career. He practically knows what shes going to say before she says it! Nevertheless, he IS phenomenal for sure.
Marlee's smile and her energy lights up the room. Children of a Lesser God is an astounding movie.

@@pamelacass9642 I didn't write "IN THE REGULAR SCHOOLS" I specifically wrote IN THE SCHOOLS FOR THE DEAF. Many states have State Schools for the Deaf. I used to volunteer in one. Those schools will definitely show this.
@@caseyjones9716 And I wrote NOT IN THE "REGULAR" SCHOOLS. In my state, there is a school for the deaf and a school for the blind. Overly burdened with students, the continued proposal is to closed both and mainstream students. How many potential teachers go to colleges offering specialized training like that? How many classrooms spread the teacher "too thin"? There's more and more handicapped students, not less and less.
Throw behaviorally handicapped students into the mix-someone will be shortchanged.
I so appreciate how much Marlee has done over the years to raise awareness just by being herself and being awesome.
I was watching The West Wing, and thinking to myself: either she's really deaf or a great actress. What do you know, she's both!
Marlee inspired me to learn ASL in my 20's. I was the only florist who knew basic signs and I was also commended by clients because I would take time with my hearing impaired/deaf clients to make sure they were fully heard about their wishes for their weddings/events.

Jack Jason-he’s her long time interpreter
His name is Jack Jason. He's been with Marlee since the beginning of her career, and he's also her producing partner. He's not her only interpreter though. He handles public/Hollywood/business stuff with her. But for family/personal stuff (PTA meetings, doctors appointments, etc), she has a female interpreter. But yeah, Jack's amazing!

I love the way they did the interpreting on this, really allows focus on her. I'm so used to seeing sign interpreters interpreting other people's words, so nice to see this reversed. I don't understand ASL, only a bit of Auslan, but it was really easy to follow exactly what she was signing with the way this was interpreted & I noticed for the first time there are a few cross over words between Auslan & ASL, "interpreter" in particular I noticed is identical. A few signs the same but with completely different meanings in the 2 languages too

I was backstage at Spring Awakening visiting with Patrick Page when Marlee came up to tell Patrick that she was going to be out for tomorrow’s show and he introduced her to us. She was extraordinarily kind and spoke to us in her own voice and I’ll never forget her openness and lovely way of moving through her life. We need more Marlees in the world.

I knew Marlee since the day I was on the set at Children of a Lesser God (as an extra actor). Just recently, even though I already knew that she was very kind to everyone including myself---but just recently I was floored to hear that Marlee once told the interviewer that she was not interested in gossip about how great the kiss was when she got it from co-star in Mark Harmon during the filming. She even said this to the interviewer "I'm being paid to kiss." Nothing more. Plus Marlee told the interviewer that she felt so sorry for the interviewer's husband for gossip stuff. Now, Marlee has my big-time respect from that day.
Ugh I absolutely love Marlee Matlin, I've had a crush on her since the 90s when she was in picket fences. I'm so happy to see that her career has continued and she still in the spotlight because she deserves it!

She is an absolute delight, worked with her on a TV show and my badly butchered ASL (learned from my sister who teaches ASL and deaf students) made her giggle and she was so forgiving when I botched it. Absolutley a lovely person! Marlee ROCKS!

@@itsflowerside Not quite so regular. Bill Obrien was immersed in the deaf community and could sign/interpret some on his own already, but not nearly at the level you'd need for that show, so Jack had to teach him the rest of the sign.
Seeing more deaf representation like with this movie just warms my heart so much. An old friend of mine was deaf and he felt extremely isolated since even his family didn't bother to learn sign language, even just fingerspelling. I learned so much about how ignorant I'd been, just like the rest of the world, about what it's like to be deaf.

This really touches me, because my Mom was a CODA. She does amazing work in representing deaf people.
I love what she did for the Deaf actors in Coda. As a visually impaired performer, I know from personal experience that that's a HUGE need for people with all KINDS of disabilities across the board. 💙💙💙

@@blaisemacpherson7637 Marlee doesn't get any cochlear implant. She only wears hearing aids. But I am not surprised of her getting pressures to undergo an operation for a cochlear implant. Such used car salesmen of the medical profession are relentless in selling needless cochlear implantations.

I have always love ASL .. It was my second thing in my childhood that fascinated me..first was anyone who wasn't like me.. special needs drew me in from the age of three.. then I found children of a lesser god. After I watched the movie the first time I then went and watched switched at birth with both Marlee and Daniel in it. We need more Marlees
People with disabilities have amazing stories and have been through a lot more than others. Should explore them more in media with the actual people.

I had a great aunt and uncle who were both deaf and they raised 4 hearing children including a set of identical twin girl's.
People of that time selflessly overcame a great number of physical and economic handicaps and were happy to lead honest, thoughtful, and productive lives. It's what they called successful.
@@ibinshkamed1586 I don't remember my great uncle, but my great aunt had the best sense of humor and she always made me laugh. I did know some sign language at the age of 10 and could communicate with her.

Wow, that was just incredible to watch. I don't know what I liked the most... She's just so expressive - even though I had to rely on the interpreter to fully understand it, her own gestures and faces made her speech so alive. Also she conveys her ideas brilliantly, and her charm, her humour... I'm dazzled. She legit made me want to learn sign language. I wonder if deaf actors have a tendency to be better actors because it seems like they have a different level of expressiveness. Anyway, what a great interview and amazing woman

Many many (MANY! lol) hearing people call what Jack was doing "translating". So, no worries. Translating actually means taking something written in one language and "translating" to a different written language. What Jack is doing is called Interpreting. It is literally the most difficult kind of Interpreting. He is seeing ASL (which is a completely different language than English) and interpreting it to spoken English. Simultaneously! It's hard enough to do that with two different spoken languages, ex Spanish to English. But, to do that with a visual language to a spoken language... well, some Neurolinguistic researchers have called it "impossible". Theoretically, of course. But, it happens and it's amazing. I've done it myself for the last 40 years. It's thrilling on so many levels.
I just started learning sign language! Glad to see more diversity in film.

I’d infer that her parents are hearing from this anecdote, but that’d be interesting to look up.
@@margaritadiaz7545 Very old comment to respond to but it is rare for Deaf parents to have Deaf children as well. Most Deaf adults with kids will have hearing children.

Thank you for actually keeping the camera on Marlee the whole time she was talking!! So many shows turn the camera on the interpreter more than they actually show the guest who’s signing and it’s so frustrating

This is an amazing interview! Steven Colbert has always been an accomplished interviewer but as we all know it takes two. Marlee Marlin is fascinating and her translator was just perfect in conveying her stories with humor.
I got Apple TV literally just to watch Ted Lasso. I watched Coda-a film I’d never even heard of-on a whim and holy shit! What an amazing story. So glad I discovered before the Oscars.

Both my parents are deaf (4 hearing kids) and while I haven't seen the term CODA in the mainstream until recently - we've known of Marlee for many years and are big fans!!

To those questioning her use of a male "voice"... and not to be such a geek but, I am always reminded of the Star Trek: TNG episode "Loud As A Whisper". That same person has been her "voice" for a very long time. He is only as good as she has made him. Listen to HER and not the voice that she is using to help YOU understand her.
Apparently it also helps people keep their attention on the subject, not the interpreter (that's the thought anyway). If it was a woman, you might start associating some of the speech to that interpreter in a weird way. With an opposite gendered voice, the contrast is night and day.
Yes, he HAS interpreted for her for a very long time. Her entire career.She chose someone she felt was skilled enough to work with her and she had rapport with, whether that person was male or female. (It's still most common to have same gender Interpreters for Voice Overs, public presentations, etc) And, we Interpreters owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Deaf community. But, with due respect, He WAS and IS an extremely skilled Interpreter and HAD been when he started working with Marlee. Or she never would've chosen him. These days he only interprets for her; he's now involved in other aspects of the film industry. As a producer, etc. But, I'm not sure you're aware that you insult him, and all Interpreters, to say he's only that skilled because of working with her.
@@Mediaright actually, it's the other way round. It's most often same gendered Interpreters working with Deaf people doing interviews, "Voice Overs" (Sign Overs? lol) etc. The goal is to match the voice with the person as best as possible to reduce distraction. Same as dubbed movies. You won't hear a female voice over a male actor in any foreign film.
As a disabled person, I have so much love and appreciation for actors with various disabilities. It is far too often that characters are written to be disabled and then an able-bodied actor “plays” disabled. I hope with this kind of representation that will become a thing of the past because truly the industry is missing out on so many talented people by overlooking them for their disability.

I LOVE MARLEE! It’s great that she is fighting for deaf actors and deaf people who work in the industry to get jobs. I’m deaf and we are fine! We just want to be treated like everybody else.

It was great interview to see Marlee. I agree it's about time. When she starred in 'Children of a Lesser God' I thought about time and she preformed so well. I figured we would see more of deaf actors. So now {2022} we will. They have skills and they are determined as a hearing actor.

Seems like the movie CODA was inspired by Beyond Silence, the 1996 movie about the girl with deaf parents who longed to become a clarinetist.
I love Marlee in everything! So happy she's met Stephen now. CODA is great. Switched At Birth is great. So much art with/about the deaf community is out now, it's brilliant. I'm a hearing person, also I'm Russian. And I appreciate Marlee soooo much. Watch and support. Educate yourself about the community and sign language. It's such a beautiful thing!

I first watched her in The West Wing and my god what a presence she had in that show. I found myself smiling every time she's in a scene. I was really rooting for her and Josh 😍

As long as disabled actors don't get picked for roles where the disability has little to no influence on the story, then able-bodied actors should not get disabled roles. Said by me, someone who uses a wheelchair at times. I still remember an actor in the series Las Vegas. A background character who used a wheelchair. Not because the scene needed one. He was just there.
I think it was Madam Secretary (one of those white house shows if not that one) had an office staff member background extra who was in a wheelchair too, clearly they just gave the part to a person in a wheelchair, cause, why not? That's how it should be! (but for main parts as well)
In the case of a Deaf character who signs in the movie, fluency is also a huge thing.
That is a wonderful interpreter they've got. Really does justice to her energy and charm. Way more natural than some interpretations I've seen done.
I will watch the movie as soon as I can, because it sounds wonderful!
But I think it is a kind of remake/inspired by the french film "La famille Bélier", which is also about a deaf family, kind of relying on their hearing daughter, who wants to follow her passion of singing. A very emotional, beautiful film that moved me to tears.
I am sure CODA will be great though, I am looking forward to watching it :)
“La famille Belier” is a decent movie in the eyes of people who can’t really tell the difference between hearing actors acting deaf and deaf actors in roles of deaf characters however “la famille belier” caused massive outrage as they were an all hearing cast, CODA has rectified this and included deaf actors in the roles they should rightly be performing and CODA has received many rewards and nominations whereas la famille belier did not fare as well. It shows what good and correct casting can do and the talent of deaf actors.

@@juliad368 They do give the movie a shout out. On the multiple press functions they mention the inspiration. Even at the Oscars the screenplay award stated the movie it was based on. A lot of American movies are remakes of international films, I also believe the creators of the original were producers on the American version.

I thought Stephen did this interview perfectly. He talked to Marlee, not her interpreter. Her interpreter was amazing.
I did a representation of her in my English class and searching about her background, I realized how strong she was. It was an inspirational story to read. I recommend you guys to do so as it might be a motivation for you to overcome your obstacles as well.
Thank you, Stephen, for giving Marlee a platform to talk about the importance of Deaf representation on screen. Also, a beautiful interview! Stephen communicated better through Marlee’s interpreter than most interviewers I’ve seen. This is why we love both Marlee AND Stephen!
You know, people of all backgrounds are being held back as a unit, so there's no longer a stable baseline as to the notion that people of any background can do a wide range of things. Therefore, it makes more sense to remove the qualification that people who are deaf specifically are capable of doing anything and apply that statement to everybody as a unit. We must always make a part of our thoughts and our actions the idea that we are individually and collectively capable of great things.
This was an amazing movie . I've watched it so many times.. Marlee is an amazing actress. And the whole.ensemble was magical to watch . The actress playing Ruby killed it in her emotions.. ASL is more then just signing with your hands it's a whole body language.. and I felt it every single time I watch .

haven’t seen “CODA” yet but what she has told us in this interview about the film. There is a french film with the exact same plot already from the year. “La Famille Bélier” from 2014 if anyone is interested!
Can we take a moment to applaude....well....all the role players here?
1) Marlee...for being so easy-going, humourous, smart, and completely comfortable with the hearing world. It is more than I can say about the Hearers toward the deaf.
2) Stephen, for being so relaxed and gracious. Interviewed her like any regular guest. If the camera was focused on him only, I'd just assume it was a regular interview with a male guest.
3) The unsung hero: the interpreter. Need I say more? It was flawless. Always one step ahead. Articulate. And kept it flowing.
Was such an amazing, yet regular interview. You would have to credit all the roleplayers for the effortless synchrony.
I randomly decided to watch Coda and ended up in tears. Great movie. Engaging, funny, moving.

You mean for when Stephen is speaking? That's always a tough call. I'm quite sure it's something that was considered and discussed before the show. I'm going to assume that the decision was that the closed captions would be sufficient. Even though ASL is a completely different language than ASL. In this case the decision was made to go with focusing on Marlee as a regular person, albeit and incredibly talented and seasoned Actor. And not on the fact that she uses an Interpreter. These clips will have an Interpreter added in other media venues for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people who use ASL. Thank you for your recognition of the fact that ASL users won't see Stephens questions interpreted! I don't know if you're Deaf yourself, but if you're Hearing, bless you. That kind of recognition of what the Deaf miss out on is very rare.
@@dod2304 Thank you so much. I am not deaf, but my elderly brother is. Although Dutch sign language is sometimes significantly different from ASL, my brother and I could pretty much understand what Marlee was saying without interpreter as she used both signs and letters. I have downloaded these episodes so I could interpret for Steven, making the episode pause after a few sentences , because actually my brother doesn't understand spoken or written American English. He was very surprised when I told him this was the actrice playing Sarah in Children of a lesser God.
Marvelous show, I must say I am addicted to it, never a dull moment with Stephen. Pity the music inbetween can't be played on TH-cam (my guess), Jon & the band are fabulous.

Shouldn't someone mention that coda is a remake of the French film from 2014, La famille Bélier ?
Probably best not to. US remakes are usually worse than the original. ;)

Oh!! All y'all young'uns just stop! LOL Just because the French movie is the only movie that YOU know about a Deaf family, that doesn't mean that none others exist! There are a couple American movies about Hearing children with Deaf parents made long before La famille Belier! "Beyond Silence", and particularly "Love is Never Silent" with Phyllis Frelich who originated the role on Broadway in "Children of a Lesser God".
Being HoH from a family that’s various types of hearing/HOH/half-Deaf (and from a new england town) this movie hit me HARD. Loved it!! Go watch it now!!

It is wonderful. Don’t get me wrong I love action movies and all the comic book hero movies too, but a more contained, smaller scale family drama is a refreshing change.
