I watched this movie with my parents we do movie night every Friday and the day we watched it earlier at work that day I had customers that were deaf so that was super cool and when I got home after work I decided I was going to learn ASL for coffee shop baristas and found this Channel so thank you for your videos they helped me.
Your welcome the next time he came in I immediately went into signing and remembered the signs for coffee, ice and milk and his face when he realized I was learning Sign Language for him. I have really been enjoying learning it.
Thank you for taking initiative and an interest in learning. I have a few deaf coworkers and a large number of deaf customers who specifically shop at our location because our staff is one of the only in our city that knows sign. It's so important to know. Even for hearing people and parents. Babies who can't speak yet, still can understand us and they get frustrated in their lack of vocal skills. So if you teach a baby the sign for milk, toilet, more, food, hungry etc. that will make your life easier too. Also sign is awesome to know for hearing people too. Like when you need to communicate something to someone who isn't within ear shot. At work we all use sign and it's so much easier to ask for help via sign than yell across the store
flashing alarms aren't perfect...my college roommate was a *very* heavy drinker who slept right through high-wattage bulbs (yes- plural!) flashing away that pretty much figuratively blinded me.
I like this video. I'm deaf . I use a hearing aid on the one ear that isn't completely gone. I also have ADD . I struggled as a child to learn sign language. I struggle still today because, my brain. It has it's own rhythm. But I'm trying and I'm hoping I can learn more as I watch. Your videos are the very first that actually make me feel comfortable. Is hard because I'm the only one deaf in my family. Entirely. From my parents. My extended family. My husband. My kids. My in laws . I'm the only one . I've learned over the years to just nod and assume I'm gonna miss half of what is said . I enjoy watching everything with headphones. I try to find some that turn up the volume so I can appreciate the music otherwise is just noise sadly. This movie is so emotional. I am however trying to learn sign language. My deafness is degenerative. I was already born deaf but I'm losing what little hearing aids help over the years .
LOVED seeing this movie as an ASL student and I really hope there's a CODA 2 soon! The movie was so well done and really showed the perspectives of the deaf family members and Ruby as the coda.
This movie had me crying!! I love the culture! I am currently learning ASL. I think sign language is beautiful! I am a first responder and I had a patient that was deaf! I was only able to do little things but she was sooo appreciative of that, she had tears in her eyes! Thank you for this breakdown!! Please do more!!! :)
This movie was incredible and great to see as an ASL student. I absolutely LOVED it, and so glad this got recognition. Hope they make more movies of this type💜
My is Rami and I'm 42yrs my youngest has hearing difficulty. Fortunately enough her hearing can repaired. Regardless of this we as a family, father and 2 daughters have been following your channel to learn ASL all though we live in Australia we decided to learn ASL. We appreciate you.. Thank You ❤️
I once had the most beautiful experience in my theatre career working on 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' with 'shadow actors. Members of the deaf theatre community. The joy they brought, the joy they gave, I will never forget. We performed one week with them shadowing us and one without. I can speak for all of us in how we felt lonely onstage without our constant companions. And it was a marvelous experience to get the reaction from the hearing audience members and then the ripple of laughter from the non-hearing audience members. I have never forgotten this experience.
The movie led me to your channel a couple days ago, I just really wanted to start learning ASL.. and now this video.. Wow!🥰 I keep rewatching the "both sides now" scene to pick up some signs :) Thank you for your videos!!
I actually learned something with the 10 out of 10 statement. Very cool! I instantly wondered if a hearing person ripped that off after learning it and we hearing been using it ever since not even knowing what we're doing! Laugh's certainly on us! 😄
I haven’t see the movie, but it looks so beautiful! I’m learning ASL like 9 years I love it I think is a language of heavens! But I haven found a place like your mention where Signer goes to socialize! So I can share what I have learned! God bless you Thank you for helping Deaf community! And helping us to learn!
She did say Deaf Coffee and Deaf Talk which is their 1x a month gathering. Wether you’d be welcome there or not would be up to the local chapter. Not that they don’t want to share their culture with you but it’s their time to not hv to teach or explain themselves, they can just be. Some drive long distances to ge to do this 1x a mo. There’s ways to get plugged in, you can always start with a local college to see if a deaf club is meeting on campus or has deaf faculty or teaches ASL, they’d be your segue into something more local and off campus. They usually will hv times for students, community members, etc to gather, practice and learn from one another.
I haven't heared about this movie until your video came out and while I was watching the video, I decided to watch the movie first. It's awesome! It's hard to understand the signing parts without looking at the subtitles, because I'm from germany, yet watching a movie in english and in asl. That was a bit tricky to look at the signs, same time at the subtitles and to get the connection which sign could have meant what. But it is worth it. I really liked the movie. Thanks for talking about it, because maybe I never would have heared about it elsewhere.
I am so excited to watch this!!! I actually really need to watch the movie but I love the breakdown and I am in awe that there are more movies being made to represent the Deaf community and the beautiful versatility of the language! I am definitely going to recommend this movie to my partially Deaf teacher from hs! This movie definitely looks like a tear-jerker! Getting the kleenex box ready. Like this is the type of movie I want to be in!
I absolutely loved the movie CODA it’s definitely one of the best films I’ve seen in awhile. I’ve been watching your videos for 3 months now and I’ve learned so much. I know about 375 signs in ASL. I’ve been able to effectively communicate with several deaf people all from what I’ve learned on this channel! Keep doing awesome work. Thank you
Im tearing up 🥲 This is my WHY! My hope is that every person who finds our channel can end up communicating with those who are deaf. Thank you for putting in the work, noticing others and taking thar step to use what you learned. 🤟
As I’ve mentioned before, it seems like Marlee Matlin has her own version of asl. She has her own personal interpreter and they understand each other perfectly. But every time I watch her, I’m at a loss. So, I believe I need more classes on receptive asl. BTW - TRIVIA!! She was the first deaf person to win an Academy Award and used asl at her acceptance speech. Then she vocalized, “Thank you!” It was very moving.
The years I was a full time interpreter, I encountered some clients that were just harder for me to understand. This can also happen the other way. It does take practice and immersion. And yes! Best trivia!!!
@@LearnHowtoSign I hired interpreters for an event with both Deaf and hearing presenters. There was some confusion because I hadn't informed them of that in advance. They teamed up more than I had seen in the past.
I started learning ASL because of CODA. Just last week my teacher taught the class the idiom DO DO. Hopefully there will eventually be an ASL Gloss version of CODA available. Thank you so much for making this video, and for (sort of) glossing the ASL in Frank and Jackie's NEVER BABY scene.
Fantastic film!! I just saw it last night. I like your video for its breakdown on what is being said in ASL as opposed the English captions, for the idioms, and for saying "God given talent" (amen), best.
That was great!!! I remember having to watch "Switched at Birth" as part of my homework in college. Attending ABC Story's when the actors came. It was truly amazing! Being apart of LHTS has revived a love all over again. Looking forward to more of this journey, nerves and all.
This movie found a special place in my heart. I don’t know anyone deaf or anyone who signs, but I have a new appreciation for that. This movie made me cry and laugh in all the best ways. Truly a beautiful movie. Edit: this movies actually the only reason I care to watch the Oscars this time around :)
Absolutely loved this movie and video of it! Found your channel because of how impactful the movie was. Thank you for helping grow this beautiful community.
Oh wow, this is full circle for me. I had absolutely no interest in ASL before, but when I randomly watched CODA, right after I went on TH-cam to start learning a few basics, this LHTS was one of those channels I watched a few videos on. Now I'm learning a tiny bit everyday!
I am learning nicaraguan sign language... the world of sign language is wonderfull, the deaf really care we respect them.... It's a great video and the movie too... more People should be Know about sign language is important too...
The developement of Nicaraguan sign language is a movie in itself . one of the youngest languages in the world created by children. the story of the discovery that Judy kegl found in Nicaragua would be very inspriational.
I loved the movie and it is why I would like to learn ASL. I don’t know what it is like for a deaf person to see your video and be frustrated . I can see their point but I certainly wanted to thank you for this video. I appreciated it and you.
I have not seen the movie yet, but this brake down of the movie was awsome. There are so many emotions involved the actors did a great job and you Meredith did a great job explaining it also. My favorite part was when Ruby left her home to peruse her dreams. I'm glad that her parents finally understood how important it was for her to live her own life and follow her dreams. Thank you so much
I don't understand why I haven't really heard about this movie until recently, but I guess it's because I don't get TV resepttion. I started learning sign language back in 1980 and I just learned some things in the last couple of minutes I didn't know all these years. I guess I will have to rent or buy a copy of the movie to watch it after all this time. 👍🏼👍🏼
I have not seen the movie (cannot afford the subscription on Apple), seen enough shorts and interviews etc. I saw one interview where Troy Kotsur says he had a father who was disabled , which he was helping look after and his father told him to go and pursue his dreams. So in a way doing this movie was a full circle moment, in which he allows his screen daughter to pursue her dreams.
I had never heard of this movie until a month ago. My oldest friend (since like 1st grade or even kindergarten) whom i havent seen for probably 20 years came into town and i met her at church(we go to the same one). She is an interpreter and i also met her husband who is deaf. She introduced me to the interpreters at church and after service i was invited to see this movie with them. (In theater)This movie is excellent and touched my heart, made me laugh & made me cry. The dead silence in the middle of the movie was a punch in the chest (dont know what words to use here). The next day i started teaching myself the alphabet in ASL. I have worked on learning more everyday since. I just watched it again last night with the same emotional reactions as the first time. I recommend everyone should see it. I now have 3 new friends that i sit with at church that also help me learn. I have also been invited to an ASL event in a couple weeks that i WILL be going to. Thank you Meredith for your videos.
This video is CHAMP! I'm so glad I found your channel. I have quite the crazy and peculiar background with this beautiful language, including my ABRUPT introduction to it in Ohio back in the early 90's. The same is true with my introductions and involvement with the Deaf communities in both Ohio and Florida, after moving there in 2003. Now having lived in California for over 11 years and not using any ASL for years, you forget SO MUCH! Somehow, as it always happens to me, I somehow meet or connect with a deaf person. It happened again a while back in Cali. Now I have several deaf friends. I've never gone to seek out the Deaf community, but somehow it finds me. Here in Cali, I've only been invited to a few small dinner parties and a few years ago, attended Deaf Fest - Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Guess I need to get back all that has faded in this old brain, and now I'll probably introduce myself into the Deaf stuff around here, instead of being pulled into it, as I was in Ohio and Florida! LoL 😆😂🤣😂😅😁
You are amazing! Thank you for making this video. I don’t know anyone in the death community, but as a young child I have always wanted to learn ASL. I learn with your videos 😊
@@aaronhobbs3195 you seem a little bitter! You are no one to come at me like that. I don’t take orders from idiots like you. Have a great day and a better life
I'm sure you have heard this before, but I'm older (80 yo) and considering legally deaf. My rt ear is dead and I have very limited hearing in my left. If its really quiet I can hear my someone talking, but if there is ambient noise forget it. Because of our ages my wife and I have trouble signing so we modify our signs to what our fingers can handle. Its actually kind of fun...I had no trouble with Ruby's signing in the movie or with most of the father's but I got lost on most of the mother's and brother's. And the dirty signs threw me for a loop...hadn't seen those before...great movie ...deserved the Oscar!
I have a friend who’s dad is deaf, and she is hearing. I don’t know much about her family other than her dad is a sweet man and one of the reasons I started learning ASL
Wow... Simply wow... ..working on relearning what ASL I started to learn decades ago. I have friends at work also trying to learn. I'm showing them this video and hope we can do a 'movie night' to watch 'CODA.' Question? I'm wondering if I should invite my Deaf friends to join us? They work all the time to integrate into the hearing world with so many hearing people half trying to learn ASL (I pray I don't stay in that camp.) I don't want them to feel like they are 'Exhibit A' on display. ...best I can do is share my concerns... Please oh please do more videos like this to back up your main education. ...As to service worker videos... I'm pulling librarian vocabulary from your videos to focus upon. A dedicated video would be even better.
It's like her brother wants society to remove the glass ceilings for disabled persons. He is right that technically a 150 pound deaf man can lift the same amount as a 150 pound non deaf man in labor, but the idea is not about physical force. It's about intelligence in a way, true change for deaf people that can remove those perceptions and thus boundaries.
Thanks for all your videos. I can't watch this yet because I haven't seen the movie. But I work in a train station can you make a travel video with questions like what train are you taking or can I see your ticket? I practice when I can but a video like that would be super helpful thank you!
@5:55 she makes a gesture of floating, off the back of her other hand. In another movie _(Wild Prairie Rose, go watch it)_ Troy's character makes a gesture that's not explained, where he makes a cup shape with one hand and uses the tip of his thumb and index finger on the other hand in a pinching shape to "pull" something out of the "cup," which then wafts away similar to the way this girl's "me" hand wafts or floats away. What does it mean?
Just in case this video is going to make me 😭 like the movie did I'm going to watch this when I get out of work...but I'm going to Like 👍🏾 it now because I know it's going to be GREAT! 😃
Hi I live in rural area in Georgia I haven't found any deaf in my area I Sign Language I need to learn ASL from a deaf perosn in person. Thanks I have learned so much from this movie.
Life is funny sometimes…. -It started with the will smith slap around the world -I never watched the academy awards show -only to find out about King Richard and Coda winning awards -me and my wife watched both great movies -found your super awesome TH-cam channel -liked and SUBSCRIBED to your channel -learning how to sign -practicing and talking ASL at my retail workplace Loving and appreciating ASL through your channel
I so want to watch this movie. But I cannot afford to sign up for this app. I already have like Hulu and Netflix. I wish it would show on these apps. I am deaf in my left ear and very hard of hearing in my right ear which is declining quickly. I so need to learn ASL.
Haha! Don't worry too much about it. If anything it will lead to a good laugh. The deaf individual in that scenario would more appreciate the effort than the signs themselves. Love that you're learning! Keep going!
I have always tried to hide emotion from my face so it is hard for me to use the right expressions. I’m trying to learn as I have been losing my hearing, almost completely in one ear and moderate loss in the other and I have always wanted to learn anyway. I am related to Troy’s wife and have met with them but I am such a bad communicator anyway so it was awkward. I would really like to learn more and always participate with your videos. Thank you.
I learned SEE for my niece. Both my father and I are hearing. But I used to lie under when my father (a concert pianist) used to play the piano. By touching the frame of the piano, l could "hear" the music through my whole skeleton.
This was very interesting! I have a follow-up question. Can you see the difference in use of the sign language of Ruby (Emilia Jones) and her family? Since she only learned it for the movie and the other used it their whole life.
I think the actress did a great job considering how short a time she had to learn so many lines in a language very different than her own. That said, yes, we can absolutely tell she is not fluent. I didn’t find it distracting enough to break my suspension of disbelief though.
Dear Meredith, In a way the movie brought me to your channel but 20 years ago I learned how to sign in Spanish. I then moved to Sweden and I didn't practice it so, you know. I have discalculia but I'm extremely good with languages. I speak nine and now I want to ass ASL. *ONE SMALL QUESTION* How do I take notes so I remember the signs without having to WATCH the videos over and over again? Sometimes I don't have my phone at hand but I have time to practice and the thing is that I only practice the signs I already know so I feel stuck. THANK YOU!!!
This is totally offensive and disrespectful to the Deaf community. You are NOT an ASL expert! If one is to turn to an ASL expert for their knowledge on the language and culture of the Deaf person, that expert should be a Deaf person, not you! Here you are, jumping on TH-cam, falsely claiming to be the ASL expert so you could exploit the Deaf community and make bucks off them. Culture appropriation. I also see that you’re also an interpreter, so I will be filing an ethical complaint against you with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. The main premise of their codes of professional conduct is to do no harm, and you just did that, violating their CPC.
It's unclear whether she is even an RID member /certified through RID, since she is careful to explain that she's a "state qualified" interpreter, and an educational interpreter...
And your point is? I wouldn’t teach woman studies or Black studies and I’d not label myself an expert on those subjects, despite how much knowledge I have. (The creator had titled her video “ASL expert Breaks Down…”before changing it after getting backlash.) And you’re telling me, a Deaf person, why I don’t volunteer if it bothers me so much? You’re showing your privileges right there.
@@jdconrad like I said make your own video. Educate people, instead of talking shit about people. My privilege? Hmmmm 🤔 more like yours is showing by talking all this crap about a youtuber. Or the one video that might have been missed titled and corrected. Do something educating and productive with that negative energy and turn it into something positive. So people around the world can learn and be educated from your point of view.
This video isnt about teaching ASL, its introducing deaf culture and explaining how ASL is different to a hearing audience. She teaches ASL to hearing people. Shes advocating. Her other videos are about learning ASL. This is about experiencing and letting those experiences come, not from her as a hearing person, but from these actually deaf actors. Normally deaf people need an interpreter, this time we do. That showes her expertise so much more than signing along would.
Hello Meredith, my name is Savannah and I have enjoyed watching your ASL videos, and learning how to sign. I have also been so blessed hearing that you are a sister in Christ! :) I just wanted to encourage you with something, as a sister in the Lord. When I saw that you were to be going over this movie, I went and looked it up, and saw that this movie contains language, and sexual content. As Christians, the Word of God tells us that we cannot put these things before our eyes for entertainment. In Psalm 101:3 it says, "I will set nothing wicked before my eyes" and in God's Word He tells us what things are wicked. 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 (ESV) but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. 2 Timothy 2:22 (NLT) Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. … Ephesians 5:4 (ESV) Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. Exodus 20:7 (ESV) “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. Prov 4:23-24 (NLT) 23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. 24 Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech. Col. 3:5 (NLT) So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. …Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good" Romans 12:9 (ESV) and "Carefully determine what pleases the Lord" Ephesians 5:10 (NLT) May His glory and pleasure be our aim in all things, and may we say "no" to anything that grieves the heart of God, no matter how much our flesh may desire it. May it be our delight, for the sake of Jesus, to sacrifice anything that uses His Name for blasphemy, or contains anything He says He hates. 2 Timothy 2:21 (ESV) 21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work. Romans 12:2 (ESV) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Psalm 119: 37 (NLT) "Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through Your Word." I hope this encouragement came across in the loving way in which I intended it! God bless you! Your sister in Christ, Savannah 💗- Ephesians 5:8
Hi Meredith, I hope I am not bothering You if I, humbly, dare to ask You an advice: I am an italian man on his fourty, and I am looking fo r someone to practice what I am learning from You: You can easily imagine how it's hard to fond in italy someone signing ASL; could You suggest me how to find a co-signere to sign with and learn? Thank You for Your Kindness and Knowledge :-) Paolo
Do, all of us, recognize that our world has been shaken in the best possible way. Deaf people and their families now have center of the stage attention. I hope that we continue to learn from them and become a more deaf-friendly place.
I have a deaf uncle, he learned when he was younger to read lips. I tried when I was in elementary school to learn to sign-language. It didn’t stick with me because I learned to read lips better than sign language. But since deaf people are different from person to person it’s hard to read lips from another deaf person to another. But take the phrase “Olive juice” can be misled to “I love you” lots of questions to help read lips better can also help the deaf community to “talk” better to the hearing! Don’t be afraid to talk to someone you can’t understand, because they might show you the way to love someone different than you!
If you are considering watching films that discuss the deaf experience then I recommend checking out “A Silent Voice” it is an anime film but I would not recommend watching it with your kids. It touches on depression and bullying as well, to the extent that I do not think it is appropriate for younger kids. Since it is Japanese it is JSL rather than ASL so it would be a cultural experience. I watched the English dub on Netflix.
Do those who're fluent in ASL ever stop translating the signs in English, as they're signing? I know this goes away when you learn another spoken language but I'm wondering if it's the same for ASL.
clearly you were telling us about the deaf culture, but you're not learning about the deaf culture that WE DON'T WANT HEARING SIGNERS TO TEACH ASL! Why don't you encourage the viewers to subscribe DEAF Signers? Such a hypocrite.
Hey why don't we just keep everything straight and only deaf people teach deaf people how are hearing people gonna learn that's my tough luck I guess you guys are making it very difficult for someone to try to communicate and maybe help you in life somehow oh well you don't need my help I guess ☹🖖
As a CODA this movie allowed people to see our perspective in life with Deaf parents. I love this movie!

beautifully compiled video. Enormously informative and insightful! Thank you very much
I cried. I felt the fear. And I'm amazed. New found respect to the deaf and coda out there.
Also the youngest woman to win best actress!
@@typemi actually, I think Tatum O’Neal still holds that record for “Paper Moon”. Check it out. It’s a great movie!!
@@eddietucker7005 sorry I didn’t clarify… Tatum won for best supporting actress Marlee won for leading role. In children of a lesser god.
I watched this movie without any pre info. I cried so much. It's really touching. Love this movie so much. Thank you for this video.
This is such a great movie! Thanks for making a video on it 🤟
I started learning ASL because of CODA. Just last week my teacher taught the class the idiom DO DO. Hopefully there will eventually be an ASL Gloss version of CODA available. Thank you so much for making this video, and for (sort of) glossing the ASL in Frank and Jackie's NEVER BABY scene.
Much appreciated the breakdown 🤟🏽❤❤❤❤THANKFUL
Thank you for pointing out this great movie. And for your comments adding to its context.
Fantastic film!! I just saw it last night.
I like your video for its breakdown on what is being said in ASL as opposed the English captions, for the idioms, and for saying "God given talent" (amen), best.
Outstanding, thank you very much for posting this video...a most dynamic film overall! 🤙
That was great!!! I remember having to watch "Switched at Birth" as part of my homework in college. Attending ABC Story's when the actors came. It was truly amazing! Being apart of LHTS has revived a love all over again. Looking forward to more of this journey, nerves and all.
I can’t wait to see this! I’m glad I watched this first!!!
Thank you , l am happy you made this post , this movie is amazing and l don't want it overlooked.
Everyone needs to see it!
All the feels in this movie! I am rooting for it to win Best Picture and of course Troy Kotsur to win Supporting Actor.
@@LearnHowtoSign AND, of course...next day it was all about "the Slap"!
What a world :(
This was a Beautiful movie in tears and thank you for what you do 💜
You are so welcome.
Brilliant movie, brilliant explanations, thank you for this brilliant video!
Absolutely loved this movie and video of it! Found your channel because of how impactful the movie was. Thank you for helping grow this beautiful community.
I laughed and cried and love this movie ....I'm encourage to continue learning g ASL with you.
Oh wow, this is full circle for me. I had absolutely no interest in ASL before, but when I randomly watched CODA, right after I went on TH-cam to start learning a few basics, this LHTS was one of those channels I watched a few videos on. Now I'm learning a tiny bit everyday!
Wow! That is so cool! Welcome to LHTS!
I am learning nicaraguan sign language... the world of sign language is wonderfull, the deaf really care we respect them....
It's a great video and the movie too... more People should be Know about sign language is important too...
Yes! Sign languages (all sign languages) are for everyone!
Thank you so much
my eyes watering watching the insight on deaf culture..thanks…
I don't understand why I haven't really heard about this movie until recently, but I guess it's because I don't get TV resepttion. I started learning sign language back in 1980 and I just learned some things in the last couple of minutes I didn't know all these years. I guess I will have to rent or buy a copy of the movie to watch it after all this time. 👍🏼👍🏼
This is great! Yes, please do more like this- maybe Quiet Place 2!!
Oooo that would be fun!
I'll watch the movie again; I'm sure to get a lot more out of it with your thoughts/break down in my head. Thank you.
Great insight! Thank you!
Oh thank you! You never know when you'll meet a deaf person someday but now you'll be ready.
DEATH?!
Edit your comment, we are not DEATH. We are DEAF!

Im learning asl just because I watched Coda. Thank you so much
Wow... Simply wow... ..working on relearning what ASL I started to learn decades ago. I have friends at work also trying to learn. I'm showing them this video and hope we can do a 'movie night' to watch 'CODA.'
Question?
Its all about Deaf Can!
Love this movie🥰. Love this video
I speak 5 languages fluently.. and because of this movie became passionate about learning ASL.. 🤓🤟
Thanks for all your videos. I can't watch this yet because I haven't seen the movie. But I work in a train station can you make a travel video with questions like what train are you taking or can I see your ticket? I practice when I can but a video like that would be super helpful thank you!
Even when you aren’t signing, you scrunched your eyes down with the “W” question…”Why is this movie titled CODA?” I can’t wait to see this movie.
OH my goodness! I have never noticed this. ASL is so ingrained in me!

"Children Of Deaf Parents" ❤
Love this video and this movie. I’m learning sign.
Loved this video!!
Oh thank you! I hope you enjoy it.
Fantastic video!!
Hi I live in rural area in Georgia I haven't found any deaf in my area I Sign Language I need to learn ASL from a deaf perosn in person. Thanks I have learned so much from this movie.
Life is funny sometimes….
-It started with the will smith slap around the world
-I never watched the academy awards show
-only to find out about King Richard and Coda winning awards
-me and my wife watched both great movies
-found your super awesome TH-cam channel
-liked and SUBSCRIBED to your channel
-learning how to sign
-practicing and talking ASL at my retail workplace
Loving and appreciating ASL through your channel
I watched Troy accept his Oscar and that was enough for me.
Next morning: THE SLAP!!!! XD
I so want to watch this movie. But I cannot afford to sign up for this app. I already have like Hulu and Netflix. I wish it would show on these apps. I am deaf in my left ear and very hard of hearing in my right ear which is declining quickly. I so need to learn ASL.
It actually was just announced in will be in select theaters for a limited time starting April 1st.
Coda is a double entendre. First as a CODA you pointed out. But it is also a musical term directing the musician to repeat a section.
Beautiful. Thank you.
Learning how to sign online, but worrying about signing wrong like what Mr. V did in the movie xD
Haha! Don't worry too much about it. If anything it will lead to a good laugh. The deaf individual in that scenario would more appreciate the effort than the signs themselves. Love that you're learning! Keep going!
awesome breakdown
Love this❤
I lv this video!! Would you talk about Switched at birth, pls??
Coda is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever watched.
Alllllll the feelings in this movie!
Watch La Famille Bélier the French original (which Coda copied)
This is so cool. I was to see this movie.
Love it already🥰
I have always tried to hide emotion from my face so it is hard for me to use the right expressions. I’m trying to learn as I have been losing my hearing, almost completely in one ear and moderate loss in the other and I have always wanted to learn anyway. I am related to Troy’s wife and have met with them but I am such a bad communicator anyway so it was awkward. I would really like to learn more and always participate with your videos. Thank you.
You've got this! And what a cool connection to Troy and Deanne.
I haven’t heard of this movie (I don’t watch many movies). I want to see it, now.
Go see it now!!!!
awesome!....love this movie
I learned SEE for my niece. Both my father and I are hearing. But I used to lie under when my father (a concert pianist) used to play the piano. By touching the frame of the piano, l could "hear" the music through my whole skeleton.
I haven’t seen the movie yet. I will see it when I’m off from work. Wow, they are signing so fast. 🙂🙂👍👍
Hope you enjoy it!
Will do. 🙂
Another great movie to watch is A bridge to Silence.
Dear Meredith,
In a way the movie brought me to your channel but 20 years ago I learned how to sign in Spanish.
I've learned that seeing and signing is the repetition you need.
learn name for handshakes! it'll help
No one else is making a video like this. Why don't you volunteer? If it bothers you so much.
So people around the world can learn and be educated from your point of view.
oh man crying just watching this so you can imagine what i was like watching the movie
Why, as a signing expert, you are not using sign language?
I wondered the same thing! Geez I wanna see the person use ASL if they think they are an ASL expert. Let us Deafies be the judge of her ASL skills.
@@kristamckenzie8085 Watch her other videos!
@@alexanderhenby1362 Regardless, if teaching ASL, use SIGN LANGUAGE! Talking about it without using it is disrespectful to Deaf people.

Ephesians 5:4 (ESV) Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.
…Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good" Romans 12:9 (ESV) and "Carefully determine what pleases the Lord" Ephesians 5:10 (NLT)
May His glory and pleasure be our aim in all things, and may we say "no" to anything that grieves the heart of God, no matter how much our flesh may desire it.
Psalm 119: 37 (NLT) "Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through Your Word."
I hope this encouragement came across in the loving way in which I intended it! God bless you!
Your sister in Christ,
Savannah 💗- Ephesians 5:8
But what is that sign she does at the end. Like why is that one finger like that?

Hi Meredith,
I hope I am not bothering You if I, humbly, dare to ask You an advice: I am an italian man on his fourty, and I am looking fo r someone to practice what I am learning from You: You can easily imagine how it's hard to fond in italy someone signing ASL; could You suggest me how to find a co-signere to sign with and learn?
Thank You for Your Kindness and Knowledge :-)
Paolo
Do, all of us, recognize that our world has been shaken in the best possible way. Deaf people and their families now have center of the stage attention. I hope that we continue to learn from them and become a more deaf-friendly place.
Love sign language
my twin and I practice signing to each other
I have a deaf uncle, he learned when he was younger to read lips. I tried when I was in elementary school to learn to sign-language. It didn’t stick with me because I learned to read lips better than sign language. But since deaf people are different from person to person it’s hard to read lips from another deaf person to another.
But take the phrase “Olive juice” can be misled to “I love you”
lots of questions to help read lips better can also help the deaf community to “talk” better to the hearing!
Don’t be afraid to talk to someone you can’t understand, because they might show you the way to love someone different than you!
Thankyou so much for telling us what the crossed finger mean on I love you.
Sign language should not be a communication tool but an official language. It must be taught at all schools.
It’s already an official language
I’m an interpreter. I suggested a drinking game while watching this. Drink every time they break the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Thanks 🙏
If you are considering watching films that discuss the deaf experience then I recommend checking out “A Silent Voice” it is an anime film but I would not recommend watching it with your kids. It touches on depression and bullying as well, to the extent that I do not think it is appropriate for younger kids. Since it is Japanese it is JSL rather than ASL so it would be a cultural experience. I watched the English dub on Netflix.
I am a CODA and have been wanting to watch this movie so bad but don't have a Apple TV account.
Do those who're fluent in ASL ever stop translating the signs in English, as they're signing? I know this goes away when you learn another spoken language but I'm wondering if it's the same for ASL.
When you're truly fluent in ASL, you actually cannot translate everything into English as you're signing. That would lead to overloading the brain.
clearly you were telling us about the deaf culture, but you're not learning about the deaf culture that WE DON'T WANT HEARING SIGNERS TO TEACH ASL! Why don't you encourage the viewers to subscribe DEAF Signers? Such a hypocrite.
Hey why don't we just keep everything straight and only deaf people teach deaf people how are hearing people gonna learn that's my tough luck I guess you guys are making it very difficult for someone to try to communicate and maybe help you in life somehow oh well you don't need my help I guess
☹🖖
