    And so Samwell Tarley is the first man to kill a white walker in thousands of years. Who would’ve thought that would happen back in the first episode when he was squealing on the ground. Love makes a man strong.

      Histories and Lore is more about world building, it doesn't really expand the current story, but it goes into more detail about stuff mentioned in the show, like Aegon's Conquest and the Dance. It nice and fun to watch and gives you something to do while waiting for Season 8.

      The Dance of the Dragons

    • @MrJH101
      @MrJH101 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neil Griffiths You don’t have to worry about the “Dance” story that he’s talking about. The Dance of Dragons is about a Targaryen power struggle that has nothing to do with the prequel series that HBO is doing.
      HBO wants to do a prequel series that takes place thousands of years ago. It’s going to either take place in _The Age of Heroes,_ _The Valyrian Empire,_ or _The Long Night._ All of these were not written stories in GRRM’s books and are mentioned only as footnotes or tall tales. Whichever ancient period HBO chooses, it is going to be completely unrelated to the main storyline. This is so that the writers can have more creative freedom to write their own stories, but still have it take place in the same world that George R.R. Martin built.

    The greatest mystery in GOT is not the Lord of Light, it's whatever Podrick did to those ladies at the brothel! :D
    The difference between Jamie and Sandor for me was that Sandor was ordered (by Cersi or Joffrey) to kill the kid, so he had little choice, while Jamie was caught doing something he shouldn't have and made his choice. But it is interesting seeing the difference in their personality when they're interacting with other people. Also, love your kitten asking for attention!!

    • @victorsixtythree
      @victorsixtythree 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I suppose you could argue that Jamie was following Cersei's wishes when he pushed Bran out the window. Cersei: "He SAW us!" (meaning "what are you going to do about it?") Jamie: "I heard you the first time."
      I think Jamie tells himself that he does whatever is necessary. Remember his speech to Cat about all the different vows he is supposed to follow even when they are in conflict with each other. "It's all too much really." The interesting question is does he actually believe it?

    • @dustfan

      @Mitsu2040 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MB.543 I agree, but if the Hound refused, he would be dead for sure. If Jamie refused, there was a chance of a scandal but his life would never really be in danger. If Theon refused, nothing would happen, really--they already didn't respect him. He didn't really get anything by doing that and had all the power to not do it.

    • @MB.543
      @MB.543 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Mitsu2040 I agree, and it can be chalked up to the fact that Theon was weak. He admitted he did wrong. And he suffered far worse for it than the other two. Jaime's "redemption story" is purely in OUR eyes. Jaime is who he has always been, we are just seeing him in a different light. He described his legitimate reasons for killing the Mad King and it changes our view of "The Kingslayer" but ... he ALWAYS had a good reason for doing it. George R.R. Martin wrote GoT with the idea that everyone is good AND bad and avoided stereotypical heroes. Thus, we get many many grey characters and just like us, they continually evolve.
    If you want to add more depth to your understanding of the GoT world, each season was accompanied by lore videos that, if watched after each season, do not spoil upcoming events and explain a LOT of super interesting backstory. Consider watching these... whether is it on or off camera, you won't regret it. :)

      Aeroangel. What you said. I could not think how to explain it. I feel it's the same with the Hound. I agree with what Steven was saying at the beginning. Stannis once stated to Davos _“A good act does not wash out the bad, nor a bad act the good. Each should have its own reward.”_ He reminded that to Davos as to why it was he cut off Davos’s fingertips on his offhand for being a thief and a smuggler, yet still personally knighted the man and raised him to nobility for coming to save them with supplies at the Siege of Storms End during Robert’s Rebellion.

    What Sam used to kill the white walker was called dragon's glass, or what we'd call obsidian. Sam not going back for that was so annoying...
    The great thing about this show is that characters that were apparently one dimensional originally are getting so much development as the seasons go on, so it kind of makes you rethink your impressions over who's a good person or a bad person. Jaime lost sight of what being a knight was supposed to be about, because of all the time he spent around his family and all the back-stabbing conniving people in King's Landing, as well as all the talk about him being a kingslayer...the time he's spent with Brienne, and seeing how she takes the responsibility of oaths and vows of a knight so seriously, it reminds him of what he's supposed to be, and makes him want to live up to that knighthood again.

    There's a lovely bittersweet moment in this episode, when Sansa wonders what would happen if she decided she never wanted Tyrion to share her bed. Such a painful thing to hear...especially after giving her total control over the physical side of their relationship. His reply? "And now my watch begins." He's referring to the oath of the Night's Watch and their vow to abstain from taking wives and fathering children. These fourteen-year-olds really know how to plunge the knife in...

I know filmmakers think there is no time to bother with small things like making sure people lock their car doors, but it always takes people out of the moment when characters just abandon vital equipment. This was a really heartbreaking episode. Sansa has one of the most heartbreaking story lines because of how long she has been used as a pawn at this point. To be fair, Tyrion will never harm her in any way, but.... sadly she is not really safe simply because TYRION would never hurt her :-(
    On the other hand, she used to be an annoying, selfish, spoiled and stupid little girl who had NO idea about the real world, and despite how awful it is that she has had to go through so much, at least she is now a young woman who is no longer so naive and trusting, and who is far more sensible and strong than she was before. She has become a FAR more likable and interesting character because of the hardships she has had to face. At the beginning of season one I never imagined that I would come to like Sansa, so that was a good surprise :-)

    • @sarah4hp
      @sarah4hp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, she was a slightly stupid with regards to getting out of King's Landing, and she could have saved herself a lot of pain and heartache if she had just gone with the Hound, because at that point she knew the truth about who Joffrey etc., and had no reason to stay.

    • @linnilotus
      @linnilotus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      sarah4hp she stayed because the Lannisters were losing at that point. Stannis was absolutely winning and everyone was panicking. She had no reason to believe that a sudden Tyrell host, who was last known to be allied to Renly, would join up with Tywin who was supposed to be fighting Robb and save the city at the last minute. She had every reason to believe she was safer locked in her room waiting for Stannis to finish taking the city then to go with the Hound, and escape the city without getting killed, and to escape they would need to have her and the Hound somehow sneak past 2 clashing armies.
      Staying was one of the smartest things she’s done, it’s not her fault fate has it in for her. She made the correct choice with the information she had at that moment.

      @sarah4hp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree that she was definitely expecting Stannis to win, and that she believed herself more safe if she stayed, but.... yeah, still feel she should have taken the opportunity to get the hell away from Lannisters and Baratheons alike.... oh well, hindsight is 20/20, and she couldn't have predicted what would happen if she stayed, so all in all I don't think she was wrong to say no to the Hound. Had she said yes she might even have been in attendance at the red wedding, so to be fair staying might have saved her life in the end.

    _Why does King Turd refer himself as a Lannister?_ Well, after King Turd succeeded Robert as king, he changed the heraldry/sigil of his House; House Baratheon of King's Landing (so did Stannis and Renly, with their own version), from a crowned stag, to a crowned stag and a lion combatant, giving equal standing to his mother's family, House Lannister - indeed, slightly more than equal standing, as the lion's tail prominently crosses over into the stag's side of the heraldry, and hovers over the stag's head, implying the superiority of the Lannister lion. Metaphorically revealing King Turd's "true colours", this reflects how he was never particularly close to Robert, while he was doted on and indulged by Cersei, *so* he always thought of himself more as a Lannister.

    Watching the discussion in the beginning of this video, I got a sudden urge to quote another TV show: "To forgive is an act of compassion. It is not done because people deserve it. It is done because they need it." Also, forgiving doesn't mean forgetting as if the past never happened.

  • @knuthenriksommer4982

    What you said about the Hound and Jaimie and redemption-stories is interesting. Maybe these aren't redemption-stories at all, just complex characters that we just haven't seen the complexity in. The Hound has obviously been a complex character the whole time. Jaimie appeared at first to be a villain, but apparently only because we only saw him in his bad moments before. I don't see any redemption in any of these characters only the gradual apperance of a complexity that has been there all the time but more or less invisible to us. To me Theon is closer to a redemption-story, even though at the moment I primarily pity him because of human empathy. I think his motives are understandable, to get the recognition he never got, even if his means to get it is deplorable. That adds some complexity to him as well.

    I have a personal theory that Joffrey is asexual. We've never seen him show any kind of sexual interest in anyone at any time. Only a sick pleasure in causing pain, fear and suffering. He basically recoiled that time that Roz tried to touch him. When he praised Margaery for her beauty in the Throne Room, to me it totally just seemed like part of the "show" for the court. Even when he threatened to rape Sansa, it seemed like the whole point of it was just for him to get off on scaring her.

    Dragonglass, or Obsidian is naturally occurring volcanic glass. Just how the mysterious person from Qarth in the second season said that "Dragons are fire made flesh, and fire is power." - Obsidian is fire made solid; it's appropriate that it has the nickname of dragonglass.

  • @JonathanSorenson204

    You made me think about Jamie differently with the commentary. I always thought of Jamie as needing to redeem himself from pushing Bran out the window. But if he didn't, the king would have found out through Ned, figured out his kids were Jamie's and slaughtered them all. So when Jamie said "the things I do for love" in S01E01, it wasn't just about Cersei, it was about the lives of his kids.

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is throwing Bran from a window was not the only option. He along with Cersei and the children could just have left Westeros. Later when Bran wakes up, Jaime tells Cersei that there is no reason to worry because they can outfox a ten year old. There was other options as well. Jaime placed himself in that situation in the first place, why did they need to have sex while they were in Winterfell? So Bran was paralyzed because Jaime and Cersei were horny. Jaime also doesn't show any remorse or regret about the situation.
      I don't blame Jaime for killing Aerys, he was mad, paranoid and dangerous. But even in that situation Jaime could have taken Aerys as his prisoner, he did not have to be the one to kill him. There are always a lot of choices in GoT, and it is often much more difficult to make the right choice.

    Also, I’ve wondered about the significance of all those crows before, too. Maybe it’s explained in the books, but I haven’t read them.
