Just received my M17 R4 with the i9 RTX3080 32GB RAM 360Hz screen 2TB RAID 0 with an additional 512 GB storage on board. This is the first personal machine I’ve purchased in about a decade so for me, I love it. Plenty of power, and the Sonics of the machine don’t bother me during normal use, and when gaming I’ve got a set of Sony WH1000XM4/B on anyway which do a fine job of noise cancelling. Everyone’s needs/wants are different but for me, this fits the bill. Cheers!

Tiger lake H45 has new the architectural structural willow cove. 10nm+ Superfin lithography about as dense as the TSMC 7nm. 20 PCIe lanes, more cache, new memory controllers. So it will be a great launch. Also Ryzen 5000 has thermal density issues. Either the liquid metal is applied to it or you can't push it to the max.
Crucially the m15 R4 with the 360hz panel DOES have ADVANCED Optimus. So it’s G Sync and good battery life without having to reboot Ryzen version doesn’t have soddered ram
This is my perception based on the type of user I am: more for data science & software engineering than video games: It’s a solid laptop that’s very stable, generally quick, runs a little warm, & due to the beefy GPU the battery lasts 1.75h at best. However, it runs super quiet & performs consistently at a B+ level. The 17” screen with HDR+4K makes movies & 4K supported TH-cam videos look amazing. However it’s big, doesn’t fit in smaller to standard backpacks, & is also really heavy. I’d like an option to turn off the GPU when not in use, and default to on-chip Intel graphics.
Hey Lisa, I am looking for a dedicated desktop replacement. The r4 is intriguing but I am hoping for future proofed no compromise performance. So if it was between the m17 r4 or waiting on the x17 i9 w/3080 which would take? Bear in mind this is assuming the x17 will be good.
When I talked to DELL about the AGA connector, they informed me "We're replacing that model, we don't have any information about it right now but, we will keep you posted when we can". I suspect they were blowing me off.
My first m17 was purchased 3 months ago. Within the first week(5days) the mother board failed. Jump to today, we now have hard drive failure. When the computer is not failing on me, it’s great.
The white ceramic on my 5-year-old XPS 13 is yellowing slightly after casual use over the last few years. It is slight and subtle but noticeable. I am going to wait for the Allder Lake 12th gen. The preliminary numbers on 12th gen look promising. I just finished paying for my XPS 17 from Last year.
If I was in the market for an Alienware laptop, I would without question wait on the AMD 5000 variation that's coming out. At first glance they look clearly superior to these current Intel-based models imho since they have no RAM soldered to the board so it's upgradeable. And since Alienware has always been known for prioritizing performance over thermals, with their current thin chassis they would be perfect for the cooler-running AMD chips. Going AMD might put Alienware over the top this year in the higher end market.
Really looking forward to getting mine, been waiting over a month for it to go into production. My Oculus arrived three weeks ago and has been staring back at me waiting to be used...
Love the fact you compared it to Alienware 51m .. as other reviewers don’t compare the 51m. I have the 51m an it’s not worth buying this, but like you say if dell do a 51m r3 that would be interesting with 200watt gpu
That SoTR results is... abnormally low. I tested it on GE66 10UG (10870H + 130W RTX3070) and got 110-115fps. Normally a deviation of 5-10fps is understandable, but with a 165W 3080 it's very weird to get sub-100fps result like what I saw here Edit: nvm I'm blind, it's 3070 version that got tested
OOOOOOOOOH! Try not to watch too many laptop reviews. Get 'brainwashed' into thinking I need a powerful GPU for games, but I just don't play 'em! Sometimes the GPU helps, espiecally when rendering video though. Don't ever think of games when looking at my AW17 R5, which is good. It's for work, not messing around. Excited for this though. Great review. Just Window shopping, but Ahhhh (Gameshow buzzer sound). Soldered RAM? Come on! 64GB wouldn't go amiss. Otherwise great. Just better speakers & possibly room for a HDD, and it'd be awesome! MSi trackpad not quite good enough. Clevo with desktop has everything I'd say, over the Area 51. Even a 4 hour battery which isn't bad
3 things Alienware/DELL should improve: 1) NO flipped mobo (easy repaste) 2) no shiny reflective bezels around screen 3) provide localized keyboards (GER, FRA, ITA, SPA...) and not just the International US keyboard layout
Has nothing to do with the content spoken on his channel but since our cars now or days have computers in them that are connected to the internet by programs like OnStar what is it to take a dealership or car manufacturer to send false codes to your car so did you have to bring it in for so-called maintenance
Ok, Dell is getting really weird. Their M17 ordering page doesn't include the RTX 3080 on any config AND they took away the option of the cherry keys. Both, however, are still available on the M15 R4.
Heya, thanks for the nice review, one question- what do you mean when you say that the alienware graphics amplifier is of no use to anyone any more? thx
Thanks for the review Lisa. I recently just purchased the M17r4 and was debating to return it for the newer M15r5. My M17 has i7 3080 144hz with gsync, and advanced optimus. Not sure if it's actually advanced optimus or a mux switch? Before updates I was able to press Fn+F7 and switch to "advanced optimus" or dedicated graphics. Anyway I did decide to keep this one since I would just be trading a better CPU in ryzen for a lower TGP rtx 3000 series GPU. Thermals are alot better compared to a m15r3 i7 2080super max q 300hz I had originally purchased and returned for the M17.

Soldered ram in a gaming laptop is a damn crime... In tablet like ultrabooks? Fine whatever nobody uses them for anything high performance anyway... But in gaming laptop where RAM matters you don't get to upgrade it? That is big misstep
the biggest lie is that they claim they solder the RAM for saving space lol my ass, same response as Apple for removing the headphone jack on latest phones.
Are the thermals so low because of dynamic boost? Also, compared to the R3, how would you say they compare? I get low 80s on my rtx 2060, i7 (6-core) m17 r3 when using cool mode but if I put it on “full speed”, I’ve seen it go to 100. Kinda curious if I have a lemon. I don’t use a laptop cooler or have it lifted like you do.
@MobileTechReview, Hey MobileTechReview! Thanks for making this video! I was wondering if you make a new review video if you will make it about the new Lenovo Legion 5 pro model with an RTX 3070 I thought to suggest this because it seems to compete with the alienware m17 r4.
Though I did have to buy this one since Dell had a very limited review program, most things we review are manufacturer loaners that we must give back when done.
I want to pick up the M17 but M17 on sale is only with 16 GB RAM. Bigger screen size and better thermals is why I want to go with M17 but the M15 is available with 32 GB RAM. Is 16 GB good enough for real world usage (the gazillion chrome tabs) and heavy gaming? or should I get M15 32 GB to future proof it but sacrifice screen size and better thermals? portability is not a factor for me between the two.
I had a alienware 15 r3 but i sold it cuz the temperature goes up to 100 degrees all the time while gaming for just overwatch , inside the alienware look messy and old school unlike razer blade and its not easy to re-paste cpu and gpu . Now I have 2 razer blade 2017 and 2021 and my blade 2017 7700hq gtx 1060 still amazing after 4 years even firestrike score only close to 10k but I never have any problem and temp only 73-75 full loaded after liquid metal.
Why the CPU doesn’t maintain the full turbo boost speed ?? In the video it appears to be around 2.7 GHZ... If it sustains the maximum speed, it will probably thermal throttle, right ?

Ordered this beast on 7/7 and delivery estimate is 7/30, it's still only confirmed with 5 days to go. Can't wait!!
Just got delayed until Aug. 11th.
Bummer
@@stosh64 have you gotten it yet?
Great review as always. This is an underrated channel. You get my sub just because of your no BS style. Brava. Cheers!
Have u come across any difficulties w it? I'm thinking about getting the M17 R4 one as well
@@EpicNoobSofiya No difficulties. Battery life is poor as is to be expected with the spec and power usage of the machine but if you were looking for portable and battery life you’d be looking elsewhere I suspect. Performance is great.
@@jimbaker1982 Tysm!^^
are you getting good fps on games ?
@@peepeepoopoo18235 a lot of variables here, but yes. I don’t output to another screen so I use the native 1080p 360Hz panel and at that Rez I have no issues driving modern games at what I consider to be enjoyable, very playable FPS at more or less max settings.
Also have the bestbuy M17 R4. Thermals are fantastic. I did have to order a 330w adapter for home since the laptop does drain battery occasionally while gaming on the 240w adapter. This machine is freaking thirsty for power. Great review btw!
So it’s G Sync and good battery life without having to reboot
Ryzen version doesn’t have soddered ram
Great video as always. Will you also review Lenovo Legion 5 Pro when it becomes available?
13:36 I'd love to know which laptop stand this is!
I'm hoping to get this one soon. can't wait for the mechanical keyboard.
You do excellent reviews. Thanks
Didn't know the AMD laptops were dialed down on the power. Shoulda watched the vid first.
Plans to review the X versions? Really curious to see what your thoughts are on the X17 R1 with the new 4-fan cooling system.
Can you make a video about where you are getting your shirts?
I enjoyed this video :) Thanks! Will you be reviewing the x17 soon?
Really looking forward to getting mine, been waiting over a month for it to go into production. My Oculus arrived three weeks ago and has been staring back at me waiting to be used...
Nice review..Quite a comprehensive evaluation. Just purchased the i9-10980HK with the 16gb 3080 144Hz. Wondering how it would stack against this build
Been waiting for this one. "Gonna look at it (this video) now" ;-)
Love the fact you compared it to Alienware 51m .. as other reviewers don’t compare the 51m. I have the 51m an it’s not worth buying this, but like you say if dell do a 51m r3 that would be interesting with 200watt gpu
Legion 5 Pro it is... worth the wait.
It is a beautiful laptop, just got mine a couple of days ago.
@@justbecause3187 nice! What country?
@@tomgillotti Australia
I wonder when they gonna let it be sold in the usa
That SoTR results is... abnormally low. I tested it on GE66 10UG (10870H + 130W RTX3070) and got 110-115fps. Normally a deviation of 5-10fps is understandable, but with a 165W 3080 it's very weird to get sub-100fps result like what I saw here
Edit: nvm I'm blind, it's 3070 version that got tested
Always loved ur reviews 😁
I love the temperatures
Your reviews are the best!
I was waiting for you to post🥰
3 things Alienware/DELL should improve:
1) NO flipped mobo (easy repaste)
2) no shiny reflective bezels around screen
3) provide localized keyboards (GER, FRA, ITA, SPA...) and not just the International US keyboard layout
4) Don't sound like a dentist drill inside your head when the fans are on at any speed
Heya, thanks for the nice review, one question- what do you mean when you say that the alienware graphics amplifier is of no use to anyone any more? thx
Just ordered a m17 R4, 3070, 1Tb 😫. I can't wait
Grandma is sick as hell!! Leggo gamps 😘😘😊😊😊
Gave video instant like when I saw the t shirt
Love to see the new Lenovo Legion 5 pro or the Legion 7, 2021 laptops.
I like this woman she very insightful and well spoken. Thanks will be buynig this laptop
Excellent review.
I just bought it from offer up for $1,500 and has 4tb of SSD boot + 512gb storage. 32 Gb RAM, intel core i9-10980hk. The Best investment!
Must’ve been used as hell
@@RuneBa1 Nope, it was used for 4 months, the guy had original receipts and Dell's customer support guarantee for 4 years, so it was steel. Last month I called them to change one of the 2Tb SSD and they did it no cost! :) satisfied with this laptop.
You need to up the volume of the video, without maxing volume, its difficult to hear and understand
Great review as always! Please review the AMD Ryzen version too :) Thank you!
I really would have like to see 1440p in a 17" laptop with a 3080. And yeah, AMD would be nice. Soldered NVME??? Soldered RAM?
Ordered mine what seems like ages ago, finally got an email from Dell today. Thinking it finally shipped! Nope, they cancelled my order and aren't selling it anymore.
Quite annoying.
Did you try to charge it with USB-C? Wondering what wattage is needed if GPU is on low consumption.
It's a very nice laptop I would get this when the price goes down at least 1k or if I can get on sale with at least a 3070 for around 1k ish....
I got one, cant wait.. DELL's delivery is so far out.
Hello Lisa :) I would buy Alienware laptop (size : 17") and I would know if it is better to wait this new model (X series) or buy this model ? Thanks !
I was waiting for a review of this!
Hello I’m a new subscriber , do you think a new Area 51 model will be released soon? And if so, are they going to be better than the m17 models? Thanks I really like your reviews! Have a good day.
Great review!
Thanks for this review. Did I hear correctly - Dell are discontinuing the external graphics card enclosure? Do you know why? Many thanks.
Forcing users to buy a new laptop instead of a new graphics card.
@MobileTechReview, Hey MobileTechReview! Thanks for making this video! I was wondering if you make a new review video if you will make it about the new Lenovo Legion 5 pro model with an RTX 3070 I thought to suggest this because it seems to compete with the alienware m17 r4.
Any notebook costing more than $600 should have ram slots and NOT have ram soldered on - as a consumer, give me CHOICE 👏🤗,
Ravi Peiris M.D.
Slow down lease! Otherwise good stuff
LISA WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR TECH? DO YOU PUT IT UP FOR SALE?
Which is a better buy, this with i7 3080 or the R5 with the R9 and 3070?
Why the CPU doesn’t maintain the full turbo boost speed ?? In the video it appears to be around 2.7 GHZ... If it sustains the maximum speed, it will probably thermal throttle, right ?
Really good reviewer !!!
This review made me purchase the laptop :3
Ryzen variant been gimpep? I'm shocked, SHOCKED! Stellar video as always. I lost interest in Alienware a long time ago -cough dell bough them cough- but I always like watching your vids.... and shirt. I do like their looks, but not for me. Specially since user maintenance like repaste and upgaradeabillity or lack off.
Have you been able to get hold of a ROG Flow? Desperate for you to review it - not buying one until you do, so no pressure!
I'm typing on it, it's a good laptop with lots of room for improvement. Go for it!
Nope, Asus doesn't have a review loaner for us and man it's expensive and hard to find.
@@mobiletechreview Damn ASUS! Thank you for the reply... hope ASUS change their mind about that and send you one.
Does the white panel get stained over time? I am asking this because they claim to have a 'High Endurance Clear Coat'
Is the display pantone certified on any of the sizes of this model?
I love your t-shirt!
Ux582 review please, maybe vs ux48w. Thanks
Been waiting for mine for 25 days now and Dell says there on it. I say they want my 4500 dollars bought it but no one can find it
So I just got off the phone with a Dell Representative and they are saying the CHERRY MX KEYBOARD IS OUT OF STOCK! Anyone else’s order was delayed because of this and now have to cancel?!?!
