I love your nice and honest reaction! Your comments show true knowledge of the art of singing. I’m an opera singer and vocal coach myself and have several students who sing non classical styles. You point out the differences in styles and how they are sung. I would recommend your video to my students as I think it’s important for people to learn the differences. Most opera singers study for many years, because it’s such a demanding style and in all honesty you hear the difference; especially in the pianissimo part (oh Dio) There is no ‘girare la fiatto’ in those particular tones. That doesn’t take away that Floor is an amazing singer and I admire her greatly when she sings her own music. Her performance on Dutch television with Henk Poort singing the Phantom of the opera was amazing.

Thank you for confirming my thoughts. I just got some flack from another poster for saying she was struggling and he accused me of not being a "true opera singer". So I really appreciate the support of another "true opera singer". :)

@@VocalSplendorStudios Also this recording is from 2010. Floor was 29 then and never wanted to sing opera in the first place... She had not performed for a popular televison program at all. Without a mic. even.... So I think she did a great job here. Again, Floor has always very openly stated that she is NOT an opera singer. She never aspired to be an opera singer nor does she claim to be one. She always wanted and trained to be a metal singer. For her the technique of singing in an opera/classical style is just another ingedient she can use in her vocal range. Nothing more. So there really is no point in 'juding' her pure operatic technique. Same goes for Tarja. Tarja never was and never will be a true opera singer. In fact Tarjs'technique is not as good as Floor's. Even though Tarja had a lot more training and dedication for opera than Floor.

Floor Jansen said several times in interviews that classic music is not her thing, She studied but, in their words, "not to a great extent" I think she does an amazing job on it despite of not being fully classic trained.

Floor is an amazing singer overall. I agree that she must have been quite nervous. It's not her usual setting, sure, but it's also not her usual crowd either. Those aren't her fans that will welcome her with open arms, plus she's on TV with all the attention directed on her, like you said.
Either way, it's a beautiful performance.
Just a side note, as it's not that important: Nightwish is her latest band, sure, but she only joined them in 2012. She's been active in the metal industry since 1997 (at age 16) with her first band After Forever, where she first mostly used her operatic vocals before expanding her horizons with more contemporary vocal training.

Good and informative reaction. Floor's voice is just incredible. I have goose bumps so often when she sings. I have a suggestion for you, again a operatic song called Stabat Mater Dolorosa performed by Epica with Floor. Recorded at an anniversary concert. Unbelievable how quiet metalheads can be. 😉.

Thank you for this reaction! What makes Floor so amazing is the fact that she is one of the few (rock-metal)singers that can do rock, pop, metal and opera style. Like she did in Ghost Love Score. And for a reaction, like others already suggested; Epica with Floor doing Sancta Terra live or Nightwish Poet and the Pendulum.

I don't normally enjoy classical opera, but whenever Floor hits those high notes, I feel like I've been punched in the chest and start to tear up. I wouldn't have noticed her nerves or tension due to my own lack of expertise, but it's nice to know about. It helps remind me she's a mere mortal like the rest of us. XD

Anneke van Giersbergen, former lead singer of The Gathering, now with VUUR, but you should listen to either her guest vocals on Amorphis "Amongst the Stars" or The Gentle Storm "The Storm" (which features Marcela on backing vocals, both awesome singers). The timbre of her voice is amazing. She's done SO many projects and guest vocals, and she is also just a ray of sunshine in person as well.

According to the dates, this was performed January 2nd, 2013.
She joined Nightwish in October 2012.
So she had only been with them for three months at that point.
But she did have her own metal band before that.
But I also noticed that this was not an optimal performance, although this might have something to do with the fact that this was a performance on a TV show with an interview.
You should also hear her sing Ave Maria with Marco Hietala (bassist from Nightwish).
An impressive fact about her joining Nightwish, is that they fired their previous singer during their US tour.
Then they asked Floor to join. On their next concert. In two days.
    She said yes.
She had to learn the songs and the set list on the trip over.
The Nightwish song you already reacted to (Ghost Love Score) was performed after the performance you are reacting to now.
At that point she had been with Nightwish for about ten months.
Here is a link to Ghost Love Score performed in Desember 2012:
    th-cam.com/video/3brcfttchzA/w-d-xo.html
Here she had been with the band for two months. If you listen to the audience at the end, you know how much gold the band struck with her!
You can also compare how she evolved into the role of front singer for the band.
Hope you have a nice day!

That was a part of the format for this tv program, to ask seasoned pop singers to perform a classical piece. Floor has also sang this aria on stage with her band Revamp, she seems more at ease there. That video is also on TH-cam. Btw in After Forever she was also great. A jewel is Monolyth of doubt (kopspijkers performance 2002). You Can see a young Floor there ;-). Thanks again!

Very good and informative reaction (I am looking for actual knowledge in reaction-videos). Thank you.
All Nightwish (Floor) songs are brilliant and worth to listen to.
The original singer is a male voice - very much what I would consider a Werewolf singing.
But Nightwish rose to (world) fame with Tarja Turunen as lead singer. Most of what Tarja does nowadays, on her own, is brilliant.
The old Songs of Nightwish "Nemo", "Over the hills and far away", "Sleeping sun" and many more are timeless Masterpieces.

You should listen to: "Phantom of the Opera" live with Tarja Turunen from the Nightwish "End of an Era" concert. She was the first Nightwish singer and her sound helped create Symphonic Metal as we know it today. Floor is more versatile and has taken them further, but Tarja is still the voice that started it. The performance is Symphonic Metal in style and quite different from the way it is done in musical theater.

    • @sarketalovic5645

Therion created symphonic metal as we know it, Tarja and boys were just kids in school when Therion introduced these elements. Also, you guys always forget about Vibeke and Helena Iren Michaelsen, they were operatic and they are Tarja's contemporaries. Tarja just got lucky to be in the band that was waaay more succesful in mainstream, and thus she gets all the credit ( undeserved)

Thanks for this reaction, i think it is pretty to the point. Yes, I think she was nervous and obviously out of her comfort zone. On the other hand she has done this more often, she even performed the aria during metal concerts with her first band After Forever. I've seen her do it live and there is a pretty good registration of such a performance on youtube as well. In After Forever she used her classical voice more than nowadays btw. I think she even said it that she has a preference for the rock/belting voice over the classical voice. When After Forever ended and she founded her second band Revamp, you could already hear her moving more to rock singing and that's what she continues to do in Nightwish.
If you want to do more Nightwish reactions then The Poet and the Pendulum is a great suggestion. Also great is the performance of Sancta Terra of the band Epica of their 10th annyversary show which features Floor as a guest singer.

I grew up with a grandmother that played the Piano and Organ for a church, and my dad played a lot of Brass and woodwind instruments, and when they recognized I started listening to Hair metal from the 80's, they told me that they loved I was appreciating well singed and played music, but that I should wait a few more years, to truly understand what was being sung and played about. If I have the backstory correct, she has only one year of classical training with the rest being at the Rock Academy (part of their conservatory). That training would have been about ten years before this performance. It would have been interesting to hear your review with that knowledge in mind. She was also coming off of a burnout and the stress of jumping onto a new band mid tour. Also, I interpreted her expression more of trying to add some emotional context to the aria, rather than from nervousness.

  • @madddog6790
    @madddog6790 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Very good analysis. I think you were spot on about her being nervous...I certainly would have been :). Bear in mind, Floor's only had at the most 2 years of "classical" training (she's mentioned it in interviews), and by her own admission, she's not that into classical music or opera. Couple that with the fact that she does very little actual opera style vocals in NW on any kind of regular basis, and it's pretty remarkable that she's as good as she is at it.

I would be intrested in you taking a look at Sharon den Adel the vocalist from Within Temptation. She has quiet range and a beautiful sounding voice. No other voice touches me like hers. The thing that i am so impressed by her is that she is completely self-thought.
A great song to listen to is the very touching song about her grandmother with Alzheimer called "Say my name" and her desperate attemps to try to connect with her onemore time. Her delivery is spot on except for a slight emotional tremor in her voice that makes it all the more beautiful. The song was never released on any of the studio albums but as a bonus track on the single release of the song called "Angels". The audience is also fully aware of the uniqueness of this song being performed because it so quiet that you would have been able to hear pin drop (quiet and achievement for 20.000 people sold-out arena).
The suggested clip is a complete concert registration but you can select the seperate songs from the attachted listing in the comments field or select the 45:30 minute mark. th-cam.com/video/KuMB2pTsZP0/w-d-xo.html

Great analysis! She went to Rock academy and after that had only a year of classical training, unlike Tarja (First singer) who had many more years of classical training, but lacks versatility. You can react to Tarja and Marco (the bassist) singing "Phantom of the opera". It's one of the best metal covers I ever heard! th-cam.com/video/8VgLKXD-BoY/w-d-xo.html

Tarja has two higher educations in the technique of classical singing, so in opera singing she understands better than Floor, that's a fact. Floor is good in a different style of singing.

Floor studied opera for a year but moved on to the ranges she now uses more. You should try the version she sang in front of a room full of metal-heads (th-cam.com/video/dcKrSpAxbnE/w-d-xo.html) where she was a lot more at home, would love to see how that stacks up to this version which was on LIVE TV.

I think your analysis is on point. It should be noted that while she did study music and opera, she started pretty late and never really sang professionally as an opera singer. So it makes sense that she'd be nervous and rusty.

  • @toonwiesas8742
    @toonwiesas8742 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Your opinion is undoubtedly fair and I appreciate that, however The Big Brain Singer and The Charismatic Voice are both opera performers and they didn't have any remarks about her singing and body language. Facial expressions are a tool to perform a song. it can be that see was a bit nervous but see is a pro and is used to perform under all kind of circumstances. See is a singing teacher herself and knows what a song needs. Thk's for your reaction.

Great reaction. Thank you for pointing out what's difficult to sing, like the ee-vowel. For a non-singer it's hard to tell what's difficult and what not what needs real practice and what not. Your reactions are really informative. Keep it up. If you want to get really busy, try something from Ayreon, there are a lot of singers. "The day that the world breaks down" has 11 singers (th-cam.com/video/oFuMKdrzPqU/w-d-xo.html)

Couldn't the "struggle with forhead" be her telling the story; she's an expert of doing all those with her face to express the feelings of the story, whilst still all the muscles for singing are doing their thing. (She also got education on theatrical music [cannot get the right words now] )

The reason is she doesnt do Opera and only recently found she has the voice for it. So she isnt practiced in it as she could be. Who knows how many times she had even done this. I saw an interview with her explaining it. Everyone assumes alot about her and her training and most are wrong. She is just that good to pull it off.
