Because American record companies bombard the public with garbage fake music and auto-tuned shit singers. They make it more about show and fashion then talent. American music is as fake as the indoctrinated American people. Their more concerned with their image then anything else.

Well as a matter of fact Nightwish isnt even popular in The Netherlands. Im ashamed by that. Since a few years now Floor is becoming a bit famous over here due to some TV shows. She deserves so much more popularity over here. Im hoping it will grow in the future. My country is missing out so much of Floor. But nevertheless im a very proud Dutchy because ‘our’ Floor is simply legendary.

For another Symphonic Metal band like Nightwish and Epica, listen to "Within Temptation". They are the third of the big three Symphonic Metal bands. Like many really good bands, Within Temptation is at their best live. Try their 15 year Anniversary Concert in Antwerp. Good songs to start with would be: "Iron" starting at 5-40 - "Faster" staring at 16-30 and "Sinead" starting at 56-40. They had a full Orchestra on stage and it was an AMAZING concert.

Thanks for your reaction. Simone was not Floor´s student, but they are good friends, indeed. Although, another female metal singer Amanda Somerville (from the US, but she lives in Europe as far as I know) had worked with both of them and it is probable that she was coaching them somewhat. Not sure to what extent. They might have adopted some of her techniques or stylistic quirks without even realizing it. Another factoid is that Mark Jansen (no relation to Floor) who provides harsh vocals for Epica used to be in the same band with Floor for some time - After Forever.
I wrote this short summary of Floor Jansen´s metal career a few days ago to share with people who are interested in what shaped her vocal personal style and as (or if) you are going forward with doing more reactions to Nightwish with her, it could help.
She began her career as a vocalist for a Dutch band called After Forever when she was 16 in 1997. It was a symphonic metal band that would eventually dissolve itself in 2009. Floor wanted to gain some former musical and vocal education during her time in After Forever, but the problem was that music schools and conservatories offered only training in classical singing and music in Netherlands back then. However, Floor did not want to study primarily classical stuff, but rather more modern styles of singing. She eventually got lucky and became one of the first students to study at the rock academy in Tillburg, Netherlands. I think she actually performed with After Forever during her audition to the academy. She studied different styles of music and singing as jazz, pop, rock and probably others. She also studied musical theatre for 2 years and classical for 1 year. Floor probably got more interested in classical singing because of Nightwish´s first vocalist Tarja Turunen, but even so she wanted to incorporate those techniques into her own style, when she felt it suited a particular piece of music. She graduated in 2005.
After the dissolution of After Forever, Floor formed with a few other musicians a band called ReVamp. It was still symphonic in its approach, but far heavier and that also applied to vocal styles Floor utilized during this period. She even incorporated some false cords screaming into some of ReVamp´s songs. I think she got inspired somewhat by Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy to try this. And as a self-described "vocal nerd" she found a way to make it a part of her own style (a technique that worked for her). However, the amount of work (writing songs, touring, singing, events with fans) took its tool and Floor experienced a burn-out, which plagued her existence for more than a year.
When Nightwish fired their second vocalist Anette Olzon in 2012, they contacted Floor in a desperate attempt to get a replacement vocalist for the rest of their world tour. She was the obvious choice for them and probably the only person they could think of who would be able to learn a set-list during 48 hours. Floor´s confidence was still quite low due to the burn-out, I mentioned earlier. It was a risky mission. But it all went smoothly and so did the rest of the Nightwish´s world tour. The Wacken 2013 concert was a real highlight of that tour. Floor became a fully-fledged member and an official vocalist of Nightwish a month or so after that concert.
Floor was still able to finish recording of ReVamp´s second album and toured with the band for a while. The band dissolved in 2016, because Floor probably did not want to go through another burn-out. Not to mention that she was pregant at the time and with a child it would get even crazier. Probably, the main difference with Nightwish is that she is not involved in song-writing process, at all; this was not the case with either After Forever nor ReVamp. Nightwish made one album with Floor as a vocalist and they will start working on the second one very soon. They also went on a tour during the last year to celebrate Nightwish´s old songs.
Floor also made contributions to various other projects, but these three bands were her main focus throughout years. And she was also teaching courses on stage performances and worked as a vocal coach.
Here are six selected examples from Floor´s career as a vocalist (outside of Nightwish)

Why isn't this music more popular in America? That is certainly a question I have asked myself many times! The closest we have to Symphonic Metal is Evanescence, Amy Lee is a pretty good fit to the genera and certainly worthy of inclusion, but why Nightwish, Epica and Within Temptation aren't huge here as well is a real head scratcher. Also, slightly less well known Symphonic Metal bands like Delain are superb as well.

Evanescence is Alternative rock. Evanescence is not metal whatsoever. Back in mid 90s to early 2000s Nightwish was always in the shadows of Amy Lee's band Evanescence. Evanescence and Nightwish are completely different Evanescence had a rapper for one of the songs made them Nu-metal which fits them perfectly. Nightwish is pure metal.

Great review and spot on analysis about the vocals (IMHO)! Simone does have that angelic voice, here she was pregnant and her mic was turned up while Floor's was turned down to balance the presentation, especially since Simone had been singing for 2 hours already. They are good friends who duets often and are involved in several side projects away from their respective bands. Epica is more of a metal sound than Nightwish usually and often Mark's growling vocal are offset to Simone's angelic lyrics, but as you said the musicianship and stage presentation of the band is outstanding.
Symphonic metal never gets any exposure except on YT, even Evanescence is not a band you will hear on radios or on many playlists, so the European bands never get played, fact is they are much better than the label's software creations and LIVE just blow them away.

You asked "Why isn't this music more popular in the US". Well, a couple of answers as best I can tell 1) this music is not cheap auto-tuned garbage where the singers learn to dance first and be talented singers second. 2) Also, most of these songs tend to 5-6 mintues (or much longer) which makes it impossible for them to be put on the radio in the US ( 3 mins or less is the rule I think). But the good news is that Nightwish and many of these symphonic metal bands do tour North America, South America, Asia, Europe, etc so check em out when you can :).

Their first priority is music and to create good shows to their fans and after that is not to waste money for stupid things. They are on the list of the Finnish companies which are doing well. They are making pfrofit even on those years when they are not touring. Because they are consentrating on qualiy and good music they have been around so many years and now they are more famous than ever before.

Another *great* Dutch singer in the symphonic metal arena is Diane van Giersbergen, formerly with Xandria, now back with Ex Libris. She's actually more purely classical/operatic in her approach compared to Simone and Floor, as she has a lot more serious classical training--Master of Arts in classical vocals IIRC. The biggest problem for me with headbanging was the balance required. But then I do have poor balance. Windmilling is even more tricky in terms of that - I'd never even attempt this, I'd go staggering all over the place like a drunken sailor! Floor's a tall woman and I think that's why she leans forward so much when she windmills in particular - women are a different shape to men too (generally) - got to lower your centre of gravity or you'll flip yourself over! I've been able to headbang as part of a line though - my friends and I at a metal gig, arms round each others' shoulders - more stability. Just don't accidentally headbutt your mate in the face and you're fine. XD

Don’t forget this special year for (not only) Dutch metal fans: #25yearsAnnekevanGiersbergen This year marks Anneke’s 25th anniversary as a recording artist. She joined The Gathering in 1994 and in the summer of 1995 they released their legendary album album ‘Mandylion’. Before Floor, Simone, and all other great female singers we have today in metal there was already Anneke. She was (and still is) unique as a ‘metal singer’. She formed a new band called VUUR in 2017 (with the legendary Ed Warby, former Gorefest/Ayreon, on drums) and this years she won the Dutch Rock Award. This is Anneke today with VUUR: ‘Days Go By’, live (of course!). th-cam.com/video/hZUJcOLd86Y/w-d-xo.html

@@Immortall1408 Yes, before Liv and Anneke there was only Doro (as far as i know) and some typical 80ties hair metal bands like Vixen. Nice, but like all 'hair metal' a bit cliché. Or maybe it's fair to say 'very' cliché...? Anneke and Liv totally did their own thing. In that way they became an inspiration for a lot of younger singers like Floor. The amazing thing about Anneke is all the different things she did over the last 18, 19 years: Metal, powerrock, classical and even Americana-style (with the band Lorrainville). And it all sounds great. In my opinion her work with Devin Townsend Project is the best. Their voices sound almost perfect together.

You should check out DELAIN It's a symphonic metalband from the Netherlands. Charlotte Wessels ain't a soprano, but she is classically trained.
A perfect choice for a song whould be Nothing Left feat Marco Hietala(There's a official live video for it). Marco Hietala are the male vocalist of nightwish and since they sign a ballad, he sings without distortion so might be a interesting song to look up.
Another thing I could recommend if you want some happy-go-lucky metal, I whould say watch the whole Nightwish concert from either Wembly or Tampere during the 2015 world tour(there's official videos on youtube). It's the endless forms most beautiful tour, so most of the music got more a "folk-metal" feel to it. It's a rollercoaster of music straight trought. I whould however not do a full show reaction too it, since it's over an hour long and if you sit down to analyze vocals too much you will miss out on all the beautiful music.

Great to see that you're back with a reaction to two of the most talented female vocalists in metal. For this performance they mixed Simone's vocals louder as she was several months pregnant and had already been singing for two hours.
In case you are interested, you could also check out two more Dutch female goddesses on vocals by reacting to this LIVE duet by Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation) & Anneke Van Giersbergen (The Gathering, The Gentle Storm, Vuur, Ayreon, Devin Townsend, Timo Tolkki's Avalon etc.): Somewhere - The Best Duet Ever th-cam.com/video/IR_mBh5mqok/w-d-xo.html

I think Metalica may have been inspired by these bands when they did their S&M (Symphony & Metalica) concert. The problem with that is that their music was never written for an orchestra. They tried to tack one on to their existing songs and it didn't work very well. But I suspect that this is where the inspiration came from.

    • @arjan_speelman
      @arjan_speelman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Nightwish and Within Temptation released their first albums in 97 and there was some more progressive metal before that which was creeping close to something that you could call 'symphonic metal' as we know it now. I could very well imagine however that S&M pushed quite a few metal fans and bands into exploring the symphonic genre. Certainly the early Metallica stuff worked so well for it.
