      @@gokublack4832 Indeed! There are some late bloomers, fat 40-something smokers who clean up their life and turn into world class master runners (with perfect knees), but not Gladwell's story.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_Gladwell#Personal_life
      Gladwell was a national class runner and an Ontario High School champion.
      He was among Canada's fastest teenagers at 1500 metres, running 4:14 at the age of 13 and 4:05 when aged 14. In college, Gladwell ran 1500 metres in 3:55. In 2014, at the age of 51, he ran a 4:54 at the Fifth Avenue Mile.

      5:20 is my personal best at age 42, while breaking 6 will be good for me next Sunday at 53. I've confirmed my race (average and) maximum heart rate has dropped about 10 beats/minute in 10 years, so that's the age-factor at work, and age grading calculator says to add about 3 seconds/mile/year after age 40, 4 seconds/mile.year after 50, and 5 seconds/mile/year after 60! Ali (on the run) deserves a mention for great post-race interviews.....and the commentators for the all they added. Without the commentary this would have been like watching the last rep of a 5x1 mile session on club training night. Very impressed by anyone who can run a 5:15 mile at 57. Still runs like a runner - not that old-man shuffle that most of us get at that age.

  • @VideoNozoki

    I am VERY out of the loop here. I am familiar with Malcolm Gladwell as an academic (speaking passionately about society and later issues of marginalized groups. I have ALWAYS found him a very interesting/engaging orator and a person whose opinion holds weight (not some 'fame seeking blowhard').
    I fist found him through his Stephen Colbert interviews (and later looked for more lectures by him).
    So today, I am BLOWN AWAY to find that he is such an accomplished runner. [The people here do not seem to think a near 5 minute run is a big deal. But as an athletic student (various sports), my goal was always 'to stay under 6 minutes is a fine accomplishment.' So for me, seeing people approaching 5 minutes as if it is no-big-deal is VERY impressive. AND!!! Malcolm at 57 making 5 minutes seem like it is 'just the usual goal' .... I am SO impressed!!! (I really need to reevaluate my notions of what is an acceptable speed!)
    In short, one of my most respected minds of the 21st Century ALSO turns out to be a badass in a completely separate field!!! blows my mind. I guess I should have expected this: most of the most impressive people I have met, have always been impressive in more ways than one, on many levels.
    Kudos to Malcolm Gladwell!!! Still finding ways to impress an already impressed FAN of his!!!
    Keep up the good work. I look forward to learning even more about you in the years to come.
    AWESOME !!!!

      @@stevegeorge6880 maybe running doesn't get easier with experience, but with experience , the factors like regularity and determination play gradually bigger and bigger role than 'talent' (genetics). I mean that anyone without health problems, who trains all his life, for decades, can achieve very decent, impressive results, just like Malcolm. Another important thing is avoiding injuries, which unfortunately often lead to complete abandoning of sport at some point.

    I am also 57 but Glad would have Lapped me! However, I can bench press 225 lbs. and do 10 full range chin ups so I have not let myself go.

    We need a rematch... in the 3000m steeplechase. The Thunderdome of track races (two men enter, one man leaves). It's my favorite event (what's not to like about Emma Coburn) so we've got my vote.

    Love this performance from a 57 year old Gladwell. I started training for 1500 about three and a half years ago, after taking up competitive 5km cross country when I was 50. I won every event I competed in, but had to endure a herniated disc (healed ), a hernia and torn meniscus. My return to 5km was marked by another win and I decided to take up 1500m competition. I was so fit with a heart rate of 37 at age 55, but after 6 weeks of initial 1500m training, I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis, removing me from even my first competition. I have been waiting a few years now for a total hip replacement, and I want to do the impossible - run 1500m in sub five minutes. I have been training hard (around this condition) and about to get my hip replacement (about the time of Tokyo Olympics) and I will give it a red hot go. My heart rate is now 32 bpm resting; I just want to see what that translates into on the track - can't wait. I'm inspired, but I know it will even take more pain to reach my goal than it has to maintain this insance level of fitness as I approach 60.

      Dude are you sure your BPM results are accurate? Even elite young runners are usually in the 40s and many in the 50s. Never heard of anyone with a 32BPM except for I think like the worlds best cross country skier who is a cyborg Olympian.

    • @firstbornjordan
      @firstbornjordan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JesusChrist2000BC Checked BPM daily for 2 years manually. When visiting the emergency ward for one of my children and the nurse was doubtful so put me on a machine and confirmed it. Actually had it down to 28 BPM for a month, then stopped that training as during this whole time I was in need of Total Hip Replacement. You're right about Olympian's BPM. Eventually I did check into that and was astounded myself, but my friends not so surprised. In my 20's, I could not get tired from running 2 hours, so needed to supplement training with water sports and exercises on top. A "doctor" wanted to give me a pace maker almost 10 years ago. I said no way, I know my body. Cardiologist put me through the stress test and said they could find nothing wrong with me - "it must be a genetic predisposition." I think it's all about training and conditioning, a little genetics and most people cannot overcome a psychological barrier of pain (except through dreaded drugs unfortunately), which prevents them from pushing the limits of endurance.

    like most things Gladwell , above average, but not nearly as impressive as people want him to be or actually is. He's a popularizer of the somewhat interesting and is perfect for the NPR/PBS crowd, he's good at stating the obvious in an interesting, easy-to-digest manner. Indeed, you'll probably have a somewhat strong, but not-to-strong reaction to my comment,

    So where can you go to find the top mile speeds at the various age groups? 5:15 does not seem fast at all if you were young.

    • @OHanzo
      @OHanzo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a person’s running prime (aged 20-30) “advanced” runners average 5:50 and “elite” runners average 5:11. Of course then there are the record holders (super elite) who run a minute under that but they are some real freaks :) I encourage you to run a mile and time it with an app on your phone, it’s easy enough and then you will have a more accurate idea 💪 Olympic average mile times are 4:41 🤣

    ALL humans should participate in being active. Specialize (focus on a single sport or activity) or dabble in many but either way, we should honor our evolution and run, climb, swim, fight (strike/grapple) and throw to some extent
