Scorsese has the disadvantage of a long, long career with a number of lesser-known films that were of lesser quality. That doesn't mean they were bad, but there are a few that may disqualify him. That being said, his absence is criminal.
I absolutely hate his early movies, it's like "Look at this shit, see the shit? Shit is bad, right? Well ok" Like they are almost pointless. Even he joked The Departed was his first movie with a plot.
Geeks and Cleats tad bit overrated haha. I was a filmpro major, so I respect the cinematography of just constant center frame like kubrick, but a lot of his films are so samey and rely more on the actors to pull the movie than anything else
Got to disagree. I might have to watch Life Aquatic again, but it wasn’t very good. Moonrise Kingdom was downright awful. Gran Budapest Hotel was beyond amazing though so it made me forget about Moonrise Kingdom.
Seeing what Disney has made lately, they should hire directors like these. I mean most of their movies these days were done by directors that have a bad reputation like Jaume Collet-Serra. I can't believe they didn't learn their lesson yet.
@@crimzonetheryt1661 Oh, come on. Tarantino could make a good movie with any studio. Either way, I'd be glad if Disney were to hire him. At least he's better than most directors that Disney is somehow choosing to hire. I mean for the upcoming Jungle Cruise and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, they chose Jaume-Collet Serra and Joe Johnston?
@@dmc1943 You do realize that Disney has allowed PG-13 films, right? If that's not enough, people can just talk out with Disney about allowing R-rated films.
According to Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, Richard Linklater has never made a bad movie. Even his less successful movies, such as Bad New Bears remake (2005) and A Scanner Darkly (2005) still had good review. I think that it was just an overlook, which is not a big deal. People don't automatically think of Richard Linklater off the top of their head, but he is definitely one of the best directors of this generation and one of the most profitable. His budgets are always manageable and always gets a return on the studios investment.
@@happysaffa8871 Depends on what you like of course. My personal favourite is Ingmar Bergman (if you’d like to know where to start with him, just ask me). Other than him the biggest giants are probably Federico Fellini, Andrej Tarkovsky and Akira Kurosawa. Even if you hate all of them (I don’t love everyone either), don’t be scared to try more. Maybe if you’re more into modern cinema, there’s of course multiple roads to go down there as well. But the ones listed above are people that might be good to have tried out, even if it turns out none of them is your style. Hope I could help :)
Stanley Kubrick is probably the best director of all time. It's a rel shame he died without giving us one last film. All of his films are masterpieces. I think Paths of Glory was his best film. I really liked Barry Lyndon as well.
Personally I hated Barry Lyndon, near enough 3 hours stuck with the most unlikable boring lead character ever. Everything else he's done is amazing imo
Xenopuppy Movies I hate all Wes Anderson hipster crap and fincher made aliens 3 and zodiac but everything else he’s done has ranged from good great or amazing
You added Edgar Wright but no Andrei Tarkovsky.. Not bashing this list, its a pretty decent list but Tarkovsky is an absolute Legend and all 7 of his films are considered as Masterpieces.. Some other Directors I would add...Wes Anderson, Wong Kar Wai, Sergio Leone, Richard Linklater, Nicolas Winding Refn, Satoshi Kon, Spike Jonze etc..
Satyajit Ray is missing from the list. A contemporary of Kurosawa, he is often believed to have written a script that rotted in Hollywood's development hell before influencing Steven Spielberg's ET... Oh, and Spielberg seems missing, too...
Not counting the 4 shorts Christopher Nolan has directed, he has only directed 10 movies. Out of those 10, how many of them are utterly fantastic? Well, it starts with Following, which is the only movie of his i haven't seen, but it's rated 7.6 on IMDB so lets just go ahead and say its alright. But he follows it up with Memento when he was 29 years old, which is a masterpiece, Insomnia, showing great performances from Al Pacino and Robin Williams, then he gets started on the Batman trilogy with Batman Begins. In between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, Christian Bale and Chris Nolan team up again for another marvel in The Prestige. He finishes The Dark Knight and moves on to Inception and brings a few more A-list actors on board, i.e. Leo DiCaprio. He closes out the Batman trilogy with The Dark Knight Rises, which is fantastic unto its own. I mean, you had to follow up The Dark Knight. Matthew McConaughey gets in on the action in Interstellar, which at the very least, makes you think, and then recently tops it of with the war epic Dunkirk. Who could ever dream of a career like that!? Not to mention his brother, who is the writer for HBO's Westworld, also wrote most of the movies that he directed, produced, and wrote screenplays for.
Take into account Rises follows The Dark Knight. I agree with you it is probably his worst film but let's take a step back and appreciate it for what it is.
I personally think The Dark Knight was complete shit and that Nolan has made one good film: The Prestige. When someone tells me they are a Nolan fan I assume they’ve never had a film class and just subscribe to No Film School to get their opinion.
Richard Vasquez Well each person is entitled to their opinion. I'm sorry you didn't get as much out of The Dark Knight as I did. You're a fool to think that paying for a class means you are more entitled to an opinion or that you are more knowledgable about a certain subject.
Dunkirk wasn’t a bad movie . I just didn’t like it. It had no character development or story arch .... and boring . Memento and the dark knight are his masterpieces ....
The Dark Knight is my favourite movie of all time, The Dark Knight Rises is my second favourite movie of all time, and Interstellar is my 8th favourite movie of all time.
10.) Edgar Wright 9.) Denis Villeneuve 8.) Quentin Tarantino 7.) Paul Thomas Anderson 6.) Hayao Miyazaki 5.) Guillermo del Toro 4.) David Lynch 3.) Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) 2.) Akira Kurosawa (1910-1998) 1.) Christopher Nolan
As much as I adore Nolan, he never takes risk, I mean never did comedy ( comedy is much difficult than most people think) it is easy to do a movie with dark tones and make people think that it is good ( because it is a highly conservative move)
@Ris Sid he's a 1 shot director he can do movies that have all the same theme he's like a professor of movies all his movies are the same philosophical snorefests that's it .
Stanley Kubrick and Akira Kurosawa are my two favorite directors. Except for number 1, I agreed with this list. I'd have had Sergio Leone in there somewhere.
Twimbo So? Tarantino is great and tends to recycle actors because he works well with them. Coogler and Jordan do phenomenally together, hence why all of their movies are critically acclaimed.
Alright, you've just mentioned the people representing the core of my storytelling inspiration. (altough I would add Jane Campion, Michel Gondry, David Fincher or Alfred Hitchcock in there haha).
I was going to say he hasn't made enough films but then I remembered his earlier masterpieces like 21 Grams and Babel. Even his first film is amazing. Definitely should've been on the list
Yo, Wright is too good a director to even have the possibility of a bad movie cross your mind when he’s involved! *edit: I like that this list acknowledges that these directors aren’t perfect creators but that none of their movies are objectively anything less than good.
Denis Villeneuve, PT Anderson, and Christopher Nolan are the greatest directors working today. if i had to rank them it would look a little like this 1.) Villeneuve 2/3.) Anderson 3/2.) Nolan
Anderson's great, but The Life Aquatic and Fantastic Mr. Fox were disliked by plenty of critics and movie-goers alike. I get that a lot of people think the former one of his best, but plenty of people straight up hate it.
Wes Anderson is one of the few directors who's style can transfer between life-action and stop-motion/animated films. He's an amazing director and adults/kids alike loved Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs.
No Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, Charlie Chaplin, John Cassavetes, Mel Brooks, Sam Peckinpah? Seriously, are these lists put together by teenagers? You'd think the world came into existence in 1999 judging by this list.
Mel Brooks, "Dracula dead and loving it" it terrible. Men in tights is only ok ish, Space balls is weaker that his earlier movies. Hitchcock has some weak movies early that people tend to forget exist
Are you kidding? _History of the World, Part 1,_ was absolute genius. And while _Dead and Loving It_ wasn't a classic, it's was still thoroughly enjoyable. I don't think any of the directors I listed ever made a truly _bad_ movie.
I'd add Mel Gibson to the list. Hacksaw Ridge, Braveheart, Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto were all amazing in different ways. Even his debut Man Without a Face was better than a lot of the worst movies in the list above. Though it has become dated.
OperationBaboon Every fucking second was shit. Every frame, made or not into his cut, the studio cut, or for that matter even your cut of the film. He's a great director, just not in Alien 3
Yes his fault. Was Alien 3 the only film he made with a studio ?? Is every good film in history made without a studio ?? Are the two hours or so of Alien 3 the precise material he wanted and was prevented from not letting into the film ?? If directors are not accountable for their films then how the fuck is anyone either good or bad ??
Why does none of these "movie related top 10 list" channels ever mention Jim Jarmusch? That guy is probably the guru of indie cinema and never fails to deliver with his unique style. Dead Man, Only Lovers Left Alive, Broken Flowers and Night on Earth are all great movies. I get that his slow style might not be for everyone, and not all of his films are great, but he is very consistent. And his dedication to the art and his love for people make all of his movies worth watching.
I'm going to disagree on Quentin. I can't say his movies are horrible but he's got several that are just boring to me. Two I didn't even finish because of it. Except Deathproof; I hate that movie and I want to do to Quentin's face what he did to those cars.
Yeah i hated Deathproof, the story was in no way as entertaining as Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs, it felt like it was just an excuse for Quentin to indulge in his Foot fetish imo, also how the hell he managed to convince Kurt Russell to star in the heap of shit is beyond me.
I would have put Terry Gilliam on this list. I believe that The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus was still excellent despite the messy wrap up due to the unfortunate situation of having to finish filming without his lead actor.
Christopher Nolan is God's gift to cinema and will go down in history as the greatest director of all time! Scorcese, Hitchcock and Kubrick can suck it!
What you just said is one of the insanely idiotic things I’ve ever heard, everyone in this comment section is now dumber just because you wrote it, may god have mercy on your soul
David Zamora Nolan’s Following budget is 6k while Fear and Desire is 20k And don’t forget about the Inflation I get that Kubrick is a visionary but he also had his starting points (also a characteristic that he doesn’t have that time is knowing the limits)
I’d like to see a list of directors who have made movies centered on an “ alternative history” theme I.e.: inglorious bastard’s and once upon a time in Hollywood.
How dare you miss Martin Scorsese. There must be a law you just broke in there. Then I would also consider Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Terry Gilliam, Sergio Leone... but Scorsese is a big one.
Scorsese is overrated and most of his early work, by his own admission are plot-less. Wes Anderson made The Darjeeling Limited, and Terry Gilliam is, lets be polite here, an acquired taste.
Scorsese is my all time favourite director, but he's made so many films that there's bound to be duds here and there, like New York, New York and Bringing Out The Dead (which I didn't even know existed)
Sang-ho, Joon-ho and Jeong-Beom should all be on here. Those fucking Koreans know how to make a damn movie. Train To Busan, No Tears For The Dead, King Of Pigs, Man From Nowhere, The Host (2006), Snowpiercer, Okja all fucking epic masterpieces. Don't see that shit in Hollywood.
Alien 3 was not shit because of Fincher, but because of Studio interference. They threw out his version, re-shot a bunch of scenes and butchered it. His directing in the movie is still spot on. the end result and the qualities of a director are not the same thing.
They all made arguably one or more bad films. Bergman: The serpents egg (1977), Sånt händer inte här (1950) and För att inte tala om alla dessa kvinnor (1964), Cuarón: Great Expectations (1998), Welles: David og Goliath (1960), Too Much Johnson (1938) and Black Magic (1949), Fellini: La voce della luna (1990), Scorsese: Boxcar Bertha (1972) and New York, New York (1977)
I would also add Terry Gilliam to the mix. At his very worst, the films are at least an interesting and evocative view into the outskirts of society and at his best they're timeless classics. Even the much maligned Tideland is a fascinating view into the fantasy world of a child in absolutely heart-breaking and traumatic circumstances.
@@07nikhilchaudhari83 Ok that HAS to be a troll. These directors are not even similar. And as much as I love TDK, Kubrick and Scorsese are probably top 5 directors of all time.
On the other hand, you did forget Ozu. Amazingly consistent and in some respects better than Kurosawa (no disrespect to that master). And since you brought it up, it's "film", not "fillum".
Del Toro? Really? He made Mimic dude... If you accept Mimic as a good movie you could just as well have added James Cameron to this list. It's easy to forgive him for making Piranha 2 as his first film. After that he has delivered milestone after milestone in cinematic history... And btw. David Lynch made Dune..
They would have 100 films between them of course they'd have a few bad ones. For reference, Tarantino, Nolan and Villenueve all have less than 10 films.
@Jim McCracken Quentin Tarrantino is the last director in Hollywood who has balls & doesn't allow society to tell him what movies should be made to what he's a literal genius
@Jim McCracken bullshit after gone with the wind the biggest & most famous western movie ever I'd say it's 2 behind only gone with the wind which I also think is the biggest movie in cinema history rivaled only by Titanic , Lion King , Gladiator , Star Wars , Dracula , King Kong , Wizard of Oz , Snow White & Godzilla .
@@stevenjones4059 the thing is, no matter how good he may be he still got the one movie wrong and that's enough to keep him off of this list. He really shouldn't be here. Scorsese has the disadvantage of a long, long career with a number of lesser-known films that were of lesser quality. That doesn't mean they were bad, but there are a few that may disqualify him.
That being said, his absence is criminal.
Mace OW
Hugo???
Lucan Reynolds shhhh 🤫
I absolutely hate his early movies, it's like "Look at this shit, see the shit? Shit is bad, right? Well ok" Like they are almost pointless. Even he joked The Departed was his first movie with a plot.
Wes Anderson, anybody?
Geeks and Cleats yessss
Geeks and Cleats fuck yeah
Yes
Sorry, a Tarintino MCU/Pixar/Lucasfilm/Fox film 😂😂😂😂😂😂. OK, maybe Fox
David Lynch actually made a Disney movie it’s called “The Straight Story”
@@crimzonetheryt1661 Oh, come on. Tarantino could make a good movie with any studio. Either way, I'd be glad if Disney were to hire him. At least he's better than most directors that Disney is somehow choosing to hire. I mean for the upcoming Jungle Cruise and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, they chose Jaume-Collet Serra and Joe Johnston?
@@CarloNassar i doubt he’d want to. He definitely would not have the creative freedom he wants and would have to make a kids film
Exactly! Just what I was thinking!
Linklater's movies just exude subtlety. Those moments aren't immediately noticeable unless you look out for them.
agreed.
This stopped mattering at "according to rotten tomatoes"

David Fincher...
I mean... he did direct Alien 3
Still not a bad movie.
Michael Baroma
Agreed
He doesn't even consider Alien 3 to be his own movie because of the studio interference.
Still better than Eyes Wide Shut
Nolan, Tarrintino, Fincher and Scorsese are my favourite directors.
Have you tried foreign film as well? :)
Not as many as I should. Any recommendations?
I know Tarkorvsky, the rest I'll have to give a go. Thank you for your help :)

Stanley Kubrick is probably the best director of all time. It's a rel shame he died without giving us one last film. All of his films are masterpieces. I think Paths of Glory was his best film. I really liked Barry Lyndon as well.
Kuddlesworth NA Huh? He died like a week after finishing Eyes Wide Shut. Could also make the case for A.I.
Wouldn't his last film... be.... His one last film? I'm confused...
so you like "Fear And Desire"?
[what i'm trying to say is "fuck you, fanboy!"]
Personally I hated Barry Lyndon, near enough 3 hours stuck with the most unlikable boring lead character ever. Everything else he's done is amazing imo
Paths of Glory is my favourite film of his too. No one ever seems to talk about it though. That ending is just top five of all time.
Was I the only one who was afraid to sleep after seeing that face in Mulholland Drive?
“Guillermo hasn’t received much love”
Look at the fooken oscars m8
This was before them obviously since he only talks about nominations
What about Wes Anderson & David Fincher
Fantastic Mr Fox was disappointing from someone like Wes, and films like Panic Room and Alien 3 are likely what kept David Fincher off this list.
No, the bad Anderson movie is The Darjeeling Limited. Plus not everyone likes his style, but I do so I agree there.
Lay off The Darjeeling Limited, I really like it.
Xenopuppy Movies I hate all Wes Anderson hipster crap and fincher made aliens 3 and zodiac but everything else he’s done has ranged from good great or amazing
zodiac is amazing fuckboy.
Agreed with everything you said, apart from Linklater. Boyhood was in no way a good film.
VB MUTT i could live with out Tarantino on that list
Linklater had made a few not good movies. And Neon Demon sucks bad
Aww I love Edgar Wright
Refn almost did it but, aside from the visuals Only God Forgives is a bad movie
Tarkovsky is the most continually amazing film director. None of his films are bad or even good, all are either great or masterpieces
Satyajit Ray is missing from the list. A contemporary of Kurosawa, he is often believed to have written a script that rotted in Hollywood's development hell before influencing Steven Spielberg's ET...
Oh, and Spielberg seems missing, too...
Spielberg made ready player one
He even has a honorary Oscar but truly underrated
@@bigpenny8223 It's a good movie. Not excellent, but good.
Ratchet Achenbach also crystal skull
Not to mention his brother, who is the writer for HBO's Westworld, also wrote most of the movies that he directed, produced, and wrote screenplays for.
nice career, some good movies, still greatly overrated.
Rises was shit. Easily his worst film.
Christopher Nolan is by far, one of my all time favorites. So many of his films are in my top 10 favorites of all time.
But the dialogues and action scenes in his movies can be a little hit-or-miss.
I find him to be horribly over-rated like Denis Villeneuve
Dunkirk wasn’t a bad movie . I just didn’t like it. It had no character development or story arch .... and boring . Memento and the dark knight are his masterpieces ....
The Dark Knight is my favourite movie of all time, The Dark Knight Rises is my second favourite movie of all time, and Interstellar is my 8th favourite movie of all time.
His movies can also be a little convaluted Too at Times.
10.) Edgar Wright
9.) Denis Villeneuve
8.) Quentin Tarantino
7.) Paul Thomas Anderson
6.) Hayao Miyazaki
5.) Guillermo del Toro
4.) David Lynch
3.) Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999)
2.) Akira Kurosawa (1910-1998)
1.) Christopher Nolan
As much as I adore Nolan, he never takes risk, I mean never did comedy ( comedy is much difficult than most people think) it is easy to do a movie with dark tones and make people think that it is good ( because it is a highly conservative move)
@Ris Sid he's a 1 shot director he can do movies that have all the same theme he's like a professor of movies all his movies are the same philosophical snorefests that's it .
Stanley Kubrick and Akira Kurosawa are my two favorite directors. Except for number 1, I agreed with this list. I'd have had Sergio Leone in there somewhere.
Ben Hill i liked it!! Its not a bad movie in my opinion
Leone made colossus from Rhodes, a bad first impression
TMW you realize Ryan Coogler has produced only 3 movies and every single one of them has Michael B Jordan as the main character -__-
Twimbo but he wasn't the main character in black panther though, he was the bad guy
He directed*
Twimbo So? Tarantino is great and tends to recycle actors because he works well with them. Coogler and Jordan do phenomenally together, hence why all of their movies are critically acclaimed.
Black Panther has Killmonger as the main character ?
And Nolan keeps casting Michael Caine in his movies.
Still love how he said years “yers”
Alright, you've just mentioned the people representing the core of my storytelling inspiration. (altough I would add Jane Campion, Michel Gondry, David Fincher or Alfred Hitchcock in there haha).
I say Sergio Leone should have been on this list somewhere

No, colossus happened
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu
Craig Perry
Good shout!
I was going to say he hasn't made enough films but then I remembered his earlier masterpieces like 21 Grams and Babel. Even his first film is amazing. Definitely should've been on the list
True

Didn't even consider him, damn.
Bear rape.
Yo, Wright is too good a director to even have the possibility of a bad movie cross your mind when he’s involved!
*edit: I like that this list acknowledges that these directors aren’t perfect creators but that none of their movies are objectively anything less than good.
Denis Villeneuve, PT Anderson, and Christopher Nolan are the greatest directors working today. if i had to rank them it would look a little like this
1.) Villeneuve
2/3.) Anderson
3/2.) Nolan
no wes anderson.
All about movies, tv shows, games, and starwars that movie is pretty good
Moath als
Iio somnia Paul Thomas is the best Anderson
Also, History of the World, Part 1.
Are you kidding? _History of the World, Part 1,_ was absolute genius. And while _Dead and Loving It_ wasn't a classic, it's was still thoroughly enjoyable. I don't think any of the directors I listed ever made a truly _bad_ movie.
Full Metal Jacket is one of the more respected war films and a great parody to get its point across
David Fincher. You missed this guy! Surprising!
I'd add Mel Gibson to the list. Hacksaw Ridge, Braveheart, Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto were all amazing in different ways. Even his debut Man Without a Face was better than a lot of the worst movies in the list above. Though it has become dated.
Passion of the Christ is fucking awful.
Where is David Fincher??👿👿
Ankit Pratap Alien 3
the original cut was not bad. it was ruined by the studio, not fincher.
OperationBaboon Every fucking second was shit. Every frame, made or not into his cut, the studio cut, or for that matter even your cut of the film. He's a great director, just not in Alien 3
again, not his fault. ever worked on a studio film?
Yes his fault. Was Alien 3 the only film he made with a studio ?? Is every good film in history made without a studio ?? Are the two hours or so of Alien 3 the precise material he wanted and was prevented from not letting into the film ?? If directors are not accountable for their films then how the fuck is anyone either good or bad ??
Perfect thumbnail for a perfect video, love it!!!
Ryan Brennan I was under the impression that deathproof was robert rodriguez and not him?
Nah, the weird not-zombie one was Rodriguez
I just went on a rant about how much I dislike Tarantino I forgot about deathproof... Ugh.. crap after crap with that man.
lemisanthrope That's how I feel about Nolan. Overrated as fuck, with only one good movie
Yeah i hated Deathproof, the story was in no way as entertaining as Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs, it felt like it was just an excuse for Quentin to indulge in his Foot fetish imo, also how the hell he managed to convince Kurt Russell to star in the heap of shit is beyond me.
i love how 95% of all the comments have no idea what they r talking about when talking about good or bad directors
sal brouwer 100% agreed ... “this movie is shit” ... “this director sucks” etc. ... what the actual fucking fuck?? 😀 everyone is now movie critic??
+sal brouwe Excuse us mr know it all.
I would have put Terry Gilliam on this list. I believe that The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus was still excellent despite the messy wrap up due to the unfortunate situation of having to finish filming without his lead actor.
Dark knight rises is my favorite batman. The first bane and batman fight is amazing.
Christopher Nolan is God's gift to cinema and will go down in history as the greatest director of all time! Scorcese, Hitchcock and Kubrick can suck it!

The Dark Knight sucked.

Under Capricorn, The Shame of Mary Boyle, Jamaica Inn, Number Seventeen, and Waltzes from Vienna

Kubric made fear and desire, a pretty bad movie..
With that budget, I don't know if he could have done something better...
Eyes Wide Shut is not very good.
David Zamora
Nolan’s Following budget is 6k while Fear and Desire is 20k
And don’t forget about the Inflation
I get that Kubrick is a visionary but he also had his starting points (also a characteristic that he doesn’t have that time is knowing the limits)

Alien 3 was not shit because of Fincher, but because of Studio interference. They threw out his version, re-shot a bunch of scenes and butchered it. His directing in the movie is still spot on. the end result and the qualities of a director are not the same thing.
Where is Ingmar Bergman? Cuarón? Welles? Fellini? Scorsese?

Bergman: The serpents egg (1977), Sånt händer inte här (1950) and För att inte tala om alla dessa kvinnor (1964), Cuarón: Great Expectations (1998), Welles: David og Goliath (1960), Too Much Johnson (1938) and Black Magic (1949), Fellini: La voce della luna (1990), Scorsese: Boxcar Bertha (1972) and New York, New York (1977)

I'm doing a 365 day, 365 movie challenge and I put every Christopher Nolan film in there, because I had to. His films are out of this world, and his characterization is almost unparalleled. So good.
a necessary condition for a director to not make bad movies is that they are both writer and director, or auteur film maker
