This song was written during the Vietnam war era, a time when a wave of love, peace and brotherhood swept over the world. This is such a beautiful song. This song was a huge hit. I like all the songs from The Hollies. ♥️

I'm 66 and still can't believe or understand why hate is still taught in this world. A child doesn't look at other children as being different. That seed of hate comes later from what they hear and see. As you said, we are all brothers and sisters and hating someone for being different has got to stop. We must open our arms and our hearts if mankind is to survive. I'm still waiting! PEACE...
I agree with you. I am 65 from south Louisiana and now it's like the government wants to go back to the 50's. I remember when they started to bus children to different schools. I still have friends from high school who are white, black, Mexican, from Asia. I am of American Indian, English, French, Spanish and Cuban. I just thought of myself as an American. When I moved to Texas and someone was talking about my mother speaking spanish so well because she was white. That is the 1st time I heard of someone calling themself brown.
@@toniharris2143 Hey Toni, I am from south Louisiana also. Arnaudville to be exact. Still living in Central Louisiana now. Loved your comment. Peace and Happy Holiday's to you and your family.
Absolutely, you put your “brother” on your back and carry him during his time of need. “It’s a long, long road, from which there is no return.” Life is that long, long road. There’s no going back, we only get one chance at this! Love the reaction!
One of the best songs written. Vietnam was devastating to our young men and this song was the only tribute to them. Those boys fought for each other. They came home to a country that wanted to forget them.
Goodnight Saigon may have come around much later in the 80s, but it was 100% a tribute to Vietnam vets specifically. This song on the other hand has a much more generic slant to it's lyrics, you could easily take it to mean wartime or peace time with civil unrest/riots and all sorts in between them.
So many of the 60s and 70s songs were about peace, love, & spirituality-No wonder so many of us prefer that time period of music. So many of these songs were about caring about the mindset of the people, and the state of the world. I wish people today would head back to these themes and learn from them. We are all members of the human race, and citizens of the world.. We need to remember that.
This one is one of the greatest songs ever made. From this one it gives many other versions. But - this is absolutly the best - THE HOLLIES - with one of the best - for myself the best pop singer of all times and most underrated - ALLAN CLARKE from THE HOLLIES.
The Hollies are an English rock and pop band formed in 1962. One of the leading British groups of the 1960s and into the mid-1970s, they are known for their distinctive three-part vocal harmony style💗
This song makes me tear up every time I hear it,and it's still to this day very popular among military veterans. In God's eyes,we are all brothers and sisters and it's our responsibility to look out for one another.
l no longer believe in God and I'm a woman with no brother but this song speaks to me too. I am brother and have brothers. I am a human. We are all related. You are my brother too, unless you separate from me by way of theology etc.
I lost my youngest brother in 2010 at the age of 42 in an accident ..he was the heavy brother in my family of 8 ..always there when needed ..on his football shirt he wore when he was layed to rest i wrote " he ain't heavy ...hes my brother "....miss him everday..💔😔🙏
I'm a baby boomer great grandma who grew up in the 60s and 70s with what I think was the best ERA of music... I love watching you young ones appreciate the music that we had that we grew up with and the meaning behind the songs back then when music and the words went together to make something really special... And that 99.9% of it all is still relevant today in 2024❤😊
'He Ain't Heavy, He’s My Brother' must surely be one of the most covered songs of all-time. Singers including (deep breath) The Ruffin Brothers, Glen Campbell, Gladys Knight and The Pips, Olivia Newton John, Al Green, Neil Diamond, and Barry Manilow have all recorded a version of it. Written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell, who was to die shortly after the song's release in 1970 from cancer.
What’s funny though it was covered by a lot of really great artists but when you think of this song the only version I ever think about is the hollies probably because they’re the ones who came up with the song first none of the other versions seem to really stick in my mind like this one…love it!
I have 3 beautiful sons.Robert had a car accident in 2008.At 21yrs old.He struggles with a brain injury but his brothers are right there with him helping and loving him.I played this song for my boys. They all cried
This is the song of the human journey...God made us all in his image. There are forces that have tried to tear us apart by pitting one against the other for thousands of years. But it IS a long long road. We just keep moving forward and making sure we keep the awareness of being humans first and foremost.
It’s a beautiful n beautifully sung statement of brotherhood and sisterhood, and caring for one another! It all starts in each of our hearts with a decision to be willing to care!
Back in the day my family was poor I'm White seventy one years old. My family worked the cotton fields and then the cotton mills. And we got along great we respected one another and loved one another. And all people should be that way now..
One of my favorite songs of all time. Way before my time but a great song is a great song! Got to be honest my Mom turned me on to the Hollies...Love their music.
The song was written for Boys Town, a place for wayward boys. Spencer Tracy starred in a film by the same title. This song has since become an anthem among US Military members; especially upon it's release and the Vietnam War and Vietnam Veterans as it was released during that tumultuous time.
@B Gallagher James Wells, Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland, tells the story of a little girl carrying a big baby boy in his 1884 book The Parables of Jesus
funny thing is that this song came from an old poem that came from a story in Scotland looked this all up a few years ago when I sang this song for Memorial Day
It wasn't written for Boys Town, though the phrase has an earlier reference there and even much earlier. It was written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell. Mr. Russell was dying of lymphoma, and passed within a year or so of completing the lyrics. Elton John was the original pianist on the recording session.
The title of this song was the slogan for the famous Boys Town Center(subject of a 1941 movie with Mickey Rooney) and charity for many years, and by the late 1960s(when this was recorded) was ubiquitous and almost universal. The charity advertised in many magazines and newspapers. The lyrics are timeless and appeal to everyone, but were hugely popular and appropriate to the public at the time, because of the US war in Vietnam. The song is still appropriate and moving, to this day. Since I was raised Catholic, I remember the Boys Town ads, and I bet a lot of other people remembered also, when they heard this. Thanks for posting this and reminding me; the Hollies were contemporaries of the Beatles and also a great band.
This song makes me hold my breath every time. I knew you would love this. Every time I hear this I think WHY are we not there yet? And now I cry. I do every time I hear it.
You're so right Mel. It's not about blood, it's about love. And I love you both, I really do. I see your love for each other when I tune into your channel, and I don't miss any of em. The lead singer is called Allen Clarke. He unfortunately has had to leave the band in recent years, because, in Allen's words in an interview "the voice has gone". He couldn't sing anymore 😢 But, he has all of those wonderful hits from back in the day. And now the younger generation are showing a new appreciation for the old tunes, thanks to reaction channels like yours. Again.... I love you guys. Just keep doing what you're doing. 🔥🎙🎵❤🇬🇧
On this side of the pond, the Hollies were one of the most successful bands of the 1960s. They notched an unbroken chain of 21 successive top 20 hits between August '63 (Searchin') and October '70 (Gasoline Alley Bred) a feat that not even the Beatles could match. It's still a UK chart record. This chain also did not include two of their, now, best known songs: Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress ('72) and The Air That I Breathe ('74).
The Hollies telling a stoy of One solider caring another off Battle field in Vietnam. But song Pays Omage to All who Fought in any War. Honor, Respect, Compassion ❤️ ❤❤❤
One of the most beautiful songs the Hollies ever put out. Just tugs on my heart each time I hear it. We need songs like this today. Songs that unite us, not divide us. Great reaction guys❤️
I'm the last of 5 boys, 3 of us left. Thanks to our wonderful parents, we had a loving home, despite being poor. I always think of a picture they had on the living room wall. It was a "Boy's Town/Father Flanagan" ad or promo. It was two boys, one giving the other a "piggy-back" ride. The caption was: "He ain't heavy Father, he's my brother". Right before my father passed, we were at his bedside in the hospital, and he said that his one wish is that we brothers always remain close. This song hits the feels. 😔
You are so right about this beautiful song, it has touched my heart every time I've heard it. I love you guys and your reactions touch my heart as well.
You guys totally got this song. It is a beautiful song both musically and in meaning. Many other great Hollies songs. I believe you already reacted to "The Air That I Breathe." Also, "Bus Stop," "Carrie Anne," "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress." The lead singer is Allan Clarke and is one of the great, underrated singers in the game." For another song that echoes a similar message, you guys might try reacting to "Lean On Me" by Bill Withers. Love you two!
I can't hear this song without crying. Clarke's voice and the harmony is brilliant. Vietnam era..... video depicts troops carrying their brothers across the battlefield. Deep.
That was beautifully said Mel. This song always touches my heart. It reminds me of the Bible story about the Good Samaritan. A man found a man from another nation, on the road unconscious and near death. Beaten by robbers. Many people passed by him and could have offered help but refused to. The Samaritian man took the injured man to an inn and paid for someone to tend his wounds and visited him until he was well. The moral of the story was that all men are brothers. I always think of this when I hear that song. His voice is so pure.
I still get goosebumps hearing this song after all these years. This song was inspired of God and to bring unity and love to all of us. We should not know any person after the color of skin, politics, male or female, or class status because He created us all.
*You can't imagine how meaningful this song was to our young soldiers in Vietnam when it came out in 1969. Watching their friends become their brothers, then lose their lives and having to carry them off the battlefield. Imagine them hearing this on Armed Forces Radio while there!*
Shawn & Mel, their "Bus Stop", "Carrie Anne" and "On A Carousel" are next for you!! edit- Allan Clarke on lead vocals! oops, corrected the spelling on his first name and lost the heart ❤
One of the most timeless and uplifting songs ever. I've been enjoying it on FM classic rock radio for decades. Cheers for finding it. LONG COOL WOMAN IN A BLACK DRESS is probably their most well known song...I think it holds the record for the most "covered" rock song in bar band/cover band history. It's a flat out ROCKER.
One of the most beautiful songs that know. My chest aches for the love it took to write and perform. What a wonderful world this would be if everyone felt this way! Thank you again for touching my heart. Love y'all ❤️
Love this group. The Hollies are a British pop rock group formed in 1962 & known for their great harmonies. They had so many great songs such as "Bus Stop", "Stop Stop Stop", "On A Carousel", "Carrie Anne", "Just One Look", "Here I Go Again", "Look Through Any Window", "King Midas In Reverse", "Jennifer Eccles", "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" etc. "Graham Nash" was originally in this group & left in 1968 to form "Crosby, Stills & Nash". Neil Diamond also had a hit with this song "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother" in 1970.
I tear up every time I hear this song. I think of my brother who I love so much. We are both in our mid-60's and except for 5 years we have always lived together. When he was young I looked out for him and now that we are older and I'm disabled he looks out for me.
Thank you Mel, you totally caught the message. And the Road they're travelling is the road of life. we all have the same destination, so carry each other all you can.
This song is about brothers in arms. This was during the Vietnam war. One soldier is wounded and another carries him looking for help and safety. It's beautifully done. Thanks for playing it. Great TH-cam channel!
Such a classic 70’s era song that can be called an anthem for so many reasons - war, civil rights, women’s rights, it makes me cry when I hear this one. Used to sing along with my buddies back in the 70’s. Love & Peace ☮️🇨🇦😻
I was a young adult when this song hit the charts. It' important to realize how strongly people wanted to connect in the '60's. Whites with Blacks. Rich with poor. It's hard to overstate what was going on at the time. Those struggles still echo into the 2020's.
This song makes me feel like ...if enough people shared this sentiment...we could actually make it as a species.
This song was written during the Vietnam war era, a time when a wave of love, peace and brotherhood swept over the world. This is such a beautiful song. This song was a huge hit. I like all the songs from The Hollies. ♥️

In the 60's and 70's , we thought we could change the world. Sadly, it ended up that we just made good music.
This song always does two things: 1) I choke up 2) I think about doing a good deed. That is the power of great music.
Yes, this song goes beyond blood, race, color, religion, language, and everything else.
It's special because it is a Vietnam War Era song. So brothers in arms are also included in the overall sentiment. Beautiful song.
I always beleived that too.
This song touches my heart and soul since near 50 years, it's a classic song.

Yes yes and I love every one of those songs that I grew up with, The hollies may not be around anymore, but their music will live forever
Always always always touches me.
The song is timeless
Really appreciate you all Stay safe out there peace out
I tear up every time I hear this song.
Love that song it has great message in it
This song is about brothers in arms. This was during the Vietnam war. One soldier is wounded and another carries him looking for help and safety. It's beautifully done. Thanks for playing it.
Great TH-cam channel!
I love your intro. Yes Robert Palmer and this Hollies song. Awesome.
This is a tear jerker for me. But what a beautiful song
great tune from a tremendous band.
Amen .
So true he ain't heavy ❤ he is my brother the best anyone could ever ask for ❤😊
That lady’s hair is gorgeous ❤
A song for the ages. So glad younger people today hear it and love it as we did and still do.
Such a classic 70’s era song that can be called an anthem for so many reasons - war, civil rights, women’s rights, it makes me cry when I hear this one. Used to sing along with my buddies back in the 70’s. Love & Peace ☮️🇨🇦😻
I KNOW you're gonna love this one!
I was a young adult when this song hit the charts. It' important to realize how strongly people wanted to connect in the '60's. Whites with Blacks. Rich with poor. It's hard to overstate what was going on at the time. Those struggles still echo into the 2020's.
I dedicated this song to my younger brother after our mother died. He was 13, I was 17. He died a year ago. Thank you for the memory.
