WHAT!? HOW?
You know Brook is serious when he says something breaks his heart and doesn't follow it up with his signature laugh
Indeed, he's *Dead serious*
Yohohohoho...
When Brook's dropping the mask of joyfully joking about everything, you know it went too far and you re fucked beyond belief
You know Brook is absolutely furious when he says something about his heart breaking and doesn’t make a joke about him being a skeleton. You’ve got to *really* piss Brook off for him to not be his usually jolly self
Brook was / is doing the whole skull joke thing to cope with his situation.
The fact that he is dead and a skeleton isn't exactly desirable.
And every joke and laugh about not having skin, eyes, heart etc... it is him essentially doing his best to laugh about it.
The moment he drops that... even for just a moment.
It is a sign of him being beyond laughing, beyond caring.
He is furious. He is horrifically furious.
its like Spider-man whene that wall crawler stops making jokes and gets quite *FUCKING RUN*

Ouch op comment
If this was Brooks vision when he began to hallucinate, then imagine how badly the guys on Robins end are going to get messed up when they realize that most of her life was nothing much better than misery and making her relive it was a terrible mistake. It’s just like with Superman when Mongul forced him to live through a dream where Krypton wasn’t destroyed and he lived a fake happy life and the heartless bastard got badly bashed around or Tanjiro in Demon Slayer was made to think his family was still alive, but slowly realized that it was fake and had to kill himself in the dream to shock himself awake and the demon that caused it all got ripped apart.

It makes perfect sense why Robin & Brook aren't affected by this. With Robin, she is completely calculated and logical and can easily see through something like this.
But BROOK... that man not only watched every person he held close to him suffer and die around him, but when he came back to life he spent the next few decades drifting around the ocean surrounded by the bodies of his fallen brothers... no illusionary magic is going to make him forget the utter horror he had to live for so long and how he was able to finally move on from the past
This man spent so long actually dreaming and drifting out of reality only come crashing back down that this trick will not really work on him, same for Robin honestly.
It's funny how Black Maria encountered and used this same trick on literally the three SH with the most trauma inside of them (Brook, Robin and Sanji), I think it wasn't done by accident
Actually, the ship seemed empty except for Brook when the Straw Hats found it, so I assume that, once he came back, Brook gathered all of the remains of his fellow crewmates and gave them a proper burial at sea. The place he built on Thriller bark is a memorial, not a grave, I don't think there are any actual bones IN IT (unless he bundled them all up belowdecks and took them out to bury later on the island.)

@@bigboynow7936 Still, everything else still applies.
@@Nyghtking Yep
@@Nyghtking that’s why he said imagine him as an old man, cause he’s a skeleton now
I like how one of the reasons Brook doesn't get tricked is because he's had many hallucinations/dreams of his former crew being alive while he was on that boat for 50 years.
i mean, if you watched each and every member of your family and friends get sick, bleed, die and eventually rot and decompose to nothing, no amount of illusions will trick you into believing they came back, especially if youre someone as old and wise as brook
Its not 50 years. Even though his crew are older than Roger, they belong to first waves enter Grand Line to find One Piece, so they meet Laboon and left it on the lighthouse of the doctor on Roger's crew. And Roger be executed 22 years before chapter 1, its safe to said that Brook has travelled alone for 15-20 years
@@superspies32 Brook's crew was sailing the Grand Line before anyone even knew who the Roger Pirates were. Remember, he only recognizes Roger's name as a rookie in Sabaody. Also, he literally says that he spent 50 years drifting alone in the Florian Triangle until finding Thriller Bark.

Out of all the straw hats Brook might have the saddest backstory. Choppers loss still left him with purpose and hope. Robin’s was pretty bad but at least she had something to hold on to. This was one of the many heartbreaking things I’ve seen in One Piece, both Anime and Manga, it’s something I wouldn’t wish onto someone I hate, it’s far too cruel
Its moments like this that reminds. Us that despite how Brook acts he has one of the most tragic past of the Strawhats, He's chronologically the oldest and has seen everyone he knew and loved die before he eventually died with a promise unkept.
The only possible ray of hope is that Yorky has never clearly been stated to be dead anywhere, his illness is very clearly the same from Norland and Calgara's story meaning there was a cure for it, so there's a very real possibility that he's still alive, around 90 years old, but alive

@@3spoons366 I think it's meant to show that, in spite of being resistant to the trickery, they're still wanting to spend some time at least facing their loved ones for a little bit, even if they're fakes. Like, Brook drinks in the good memories he had with the Rumbars before completely decimating the fakes.

He simply said that he is used to being alone and he's had so many moments where he hallucinated everyone being alive and it being a dream
BOI IS SAD AND LONELY MEETING THE STRAW HATS HAS BEEN THE BEST THING THAT HAPPENED TO HIM
It's true to life, speaking from experience. You DO kind of "break" from isolation, it causes irreparable brain damage. You learn to converse with yourself just like brook does in that scene, and being around people feels foreign and strange, some times anxiety-inducing, so you seek out a quiet place to be alone, even if you desperately desire company. People usually don't understand, think you're too strange and avoid you annnd then you're back to being alone! And talking to yourself. The constant back-turning and abandonment for whatever reason can turn into animosity and misanthropy, then you convince yourself "you don't like humans" while also desperately wanting their presence. TL;DR: it sucks and I get it.
What episode exsactly?

@@ieattrash6589 No problem~
You can see the moment Brook realizes, but instead of immediately going past it, he lets himself believe in the illusion just for a bit. Only long enough to play "That Song" and when it's over all the decades of loneliness and all the years of anguish come piling back up. Which causes Brook to be set into an almost monster like state where he is completely wrathful at those would dare attempt to use his comrades against him.
Brook's voice actors ability to effortlessly bounce between his trademark falsetto YOHOHOHO!! into a super deep and serious voice really is a thing of beauty
I love when Brook shows a level of maturity that fits his actual age. We often forget he is a very old man memtally at this point (despite being a skeleton) because his demeanor is one associated with youth. It's just really a really cool part of Brooks character and another example of Oda's exemplary writing concerning his characters.
You can tell that brook was pissed about this. He played along to savor the memories but he knows its not real. Thats a wrong move for the enemies from the start
And he didn't make a skeleton joke about not having a heart anymore
It really is freaky to see him like this, isn't it? He's normally the loud and humorous and warm man that makes laughs and puts a smile on everyone he around him. But in the face of those who use the image of those he held dear, those who dare manipulate his greatest pain, he shows them no such face. Like his use of his blade coated in the chill of the underworld, his rage is swift and cold. No shouting, no goofing around, no jokes. Just a terrifying calm hiding a raging storm fueled by the pain of regrets he still suffers through even now.
You know it serious when brook doesn’t make a skull joke about his heart
In the full clip, he does say that he didn't have a heart anymore. But he doesn't laugh after saying it, _because nothing about this is funny._
Though he does make a joke after beating the lady, telling her that if she wanted to show him anything, she should just show him her panties next time. _then_ he laughs!
Those guys get what they deserve. To toy with one’s memory of happier times is just cruel
I really wish we could see a little bit more of Brooks pathos and seriousness in the manga; I feel many of the characters lean into the humor/niche a bit too often. Glad the animation has improved as well, and I hope it stays.
I agree, but also part of the reason that his moments are so epic are because they leave us _hungry_ for more. 😆
he was already given a spotlight in wci bruh. He was so badass there
@@beastamaki7940 I dont watch the anime much, usually stick to the manga- it's possible the anjme had some extra somber content with him there that I can't recall the manga having.
@@beastamaki7940 yeah but that was like his only time to shine
But ....... Brook's entire thing is that he's always hiding his feelings behind jokes and a smile (even though he has no lips YOHOHOHO). It's 100% in character for him to be always joking, it's his way of coping with the fact he has been trapped with half a century with the corpses of his friends, and that's why when he gets so serious it's so jarring : it means that something upset him enough to have him drop the mask
Brook actually avoided doing his usual skull joke. That should tell you how furious he was.
I swear this moment is enough to make any person’s heart break. Brook is such a wonder character and when he reunites with Laboon, I’m not ashamed to say I will cry tears of fucking joy.
Lotus eater powers tend to be very cruel, especially if they are used as a short term distraction like here.
But sometimes the trapped character gets a chance to indulge, if even for a moment, before breaking out of the illusion.
But man, Brook having to actually cut down his comrades and captain and not just the environment to break out is hard.
Playing with someone's emotions and memories like that is like throwing fire on an unmarked container. You don't know if it's filled with something to easily burn...or something explosive that will consume you instead.
Should've stuck with just Captain Yorky; there's at least a chance that he's still alive, however small it is.
Completely overreached by showing Brook the rest of his crew; the guy spent 50 years drifting about on a busted ship with nothing but their corpses for company. He knows for a *fact* that they're all dead.
they did send his body to ocean if i remember well
Captain Yorky died, Brook took over as Captain of the Rumbar Pirates when he passed before Brook and the crew died.
Yorky died before the rest of the Rumbar Pirates did though.
@@poro9084 i thought he only sent the sick members into the calm belt in hopes they reach the east blue so someone can cure them and they left it on a mystery , unless thats just a dubism/animeism and the jap dub/ mamga say otherwise
@@maverickdarkrath4780 This is what I remembered as well.
It's just sad that Brook never gets fooled by the trick but just wants to see his old crew again
It’s amazing that even with just a skeleton face to work with, the pain Brook feels when he sees his old crew is clearly evident. The old memory’s of his crew and their end causes him so much pain and sadness, he almost wants to believe they are alive. But Brook knows, he knows they are all gone. And while he came back from the dead, none of them ever will.
Mock a man who had mourned his loved and he won't be the only one
I love visceral reactions like this, similar to the rage Roy Mustang let lose when Envy impersonated Hughes. A very "how absolutely dare you" moment.
Don't mess with people's feelings
Brooks is sadly most definitely the most broken of the strawhats, the one thing that can truly being happiness to him is stuck in the first half of the world and his memories is truly the thing he treasures the most so im so happy he joined the Strawhats too make more memories
Dude we can't be in pain when brook's laugh is always present. It doesn't matter anything we say. We always end it with a joke with his classic laugh. It wouldn't be classic if we didn't add a YOHOHO
He laughs off his pain like Rick Sanchez saying "wubba lubba dub dub." Basically laughing to mask the pain.
the amazing part about brook is that he'll tell the next generations about how he was part of a random pirate crew and then suddenly became a crew member of the man who went to be the king of the pirates and was joyboy
This was fun, but in Robin’s illusions when she said “Denishishi” the first time I burst out into tears out of nowhere. I really love her characters growth
The amount of pain and suffering Brook feels already and the stress he went through to accept the terms of what happened to his crew is bad enough. Imagine trying to half ass making them seem alive right in front of you. Brook is truly a beautifully written character
"I am sad... and in pain..."
That line hit deep, yo
1:30 The way his voice breaks there is kinda terrifying.
Being highly depressive sometimes myself, the thing that I admire most about Brook is that he didn't throw himself off the side of the ship during that 50 years. He kept his joy, I think that's probably why hes my favorite
Unfortunately that wouldn't even kill him. Because he didn't know yet he could leave his body at any time, he would end up being a prisoner in his own body since, because he doesn't need to breathe anymore, he can't drown.
His body was at the bottom of the ocean if i remember correctly. He just had to find it, thats why hes bones if you remember. He took too long to find the body.
@@lockhart1433 No. His, and the rest of his crew's, remains were just lieing on the deck of his ship. The reason it took so long to find the ship was because the ship was randomly drifting through a massive mist bank in an area known for it's random seadrifts.

I really feel him when he said "Its really cruel". For me personally, brook have the saddest backstory follow closely by sanji.
Making Brook see his old crew and fight them is just all kinds of fucked up.
You can't fool a man with an illusion if he dreams of it nightly, and knows it will never be reality when he wakes up.
My favorite strawhat. He incredibly cool funny and underrated.
Feeling fory man
Maria messed with the wrong person. A person who completely live a decade with his own asylum surrounded by his friend's corpses and he have to deal with the most painful for his mental health.
Brook not only lost his crew, he relived it, everyday, for 50 years. To him, this illusion was just one of many, worse yet, it was a sad attempt at one.
My heart always breaks for Brook. Seeing your crew whom you loved die before your eyes, being in isolation for 50 years, still waiting on that promise with a whale to meet again. God!!!! Everytime j think of what he has been through i literally cry. (I am crying as i am typing these now) Sanji is my fave among the Strawhats but it is Brook that i hang a poster of in my room. The strength of his heart to withstand pain inspires me to be stronger emotionally too.
we all know Brook's first crew was watching him glad that he was able to see through the illusion just as angry as he was that they would use their memories like that
Brook has been stuck & traumatized with the corpses & skeletal remains of his crewmates for 50 whole years you knew damn well he ain't dumb & wasn't gonna 100% fall for this illusion💔 Black Maria really thought she was smart thinking these illusions would weaken Robin & Brook but if anything she just made them more pissed off & stronger🤣

Hearing this line without his usual laugh after making a dead-pun, it most certainly was one of his most emotional moment.

Me: u don't have a heart YOHOHOHOHOHO
Brooke has had a loooooong long time to come to terms with the fact they are gone. This might have worked when the wound was fresh but never at this point in his immortal life. It's been too long... all this did was serve to anger him.
brook spent years alone at sea surrounded by his dead homies. you think you gon mess with bluds head?
Actually this scene is sadder than it looks like, Brook knew it was an ilusion for sure, but he was happy to see his crewmates again as when he named Yorky he was with a happy voice, he even played the piano like a memorial that he still miss them, Brook just wanted to enjoy this ilusión as much as he could just to see them but at the same time he broke when he knew that the happy part of the ilusion was over when Yorky attacked him and he had to kill them all.
You know it’s not good when brook doesn’t make a skeleton joke
I love how realistic this is. Brook enjoyed a second of it, enjoyed the feeling. But unlike the trope he didn't fall for it. He watched his captain die, he watched his crew die. He woke up and had to live on ship with their bodies for decades. By no means should that trick work on him and i love it
you can feel brooks hate and pain because he says "it breaks my heart", but there is no joke about no heart
Brook and Robin have both been through the closest possible thing to hell on earth, and have both come to terms with their pasts. My main take away from this scene was how strong both of them are mentally. They live for their fallen. Of course they wouldn’t get duped by that little party trick. Why else would they be here now if those people hadn’t died? TLDR peak fiction
I love these kind of eery scenes with Brook. I think his character and VA shine the most when it comes to moments of tension and thriller
It's amazing to me that I was uncomfortable during this scene. Seeing Brook's old crew made Bink's Sake sound so *wrong* like it was beating a dead horse or something. It's just so sad seeing a pleasant homely song being used in a scene that's intended to essentially bastardise the memories of Brook's dead friends just to catch him off guard.
The experience that Brook had been alone for fifty years makes him the strongest in this part. He never lose his mind.
Brook: Well... Actually, my head *is* empty... YOHOHOHO~!

Brook is the man
Man had 50 years stewing on his loss and going mad for it. Can’t exactly trick him on such stuff
So Brook is the best character? I mean, I already knew this, but the reminder is much appreciated.
In all seriousness, though, I really do love this scene, and it's up there with "what fool makes his death part of the plan, young lady?" as moments where we are reminded that this is a veteran of the old seas, and his confidence in the face of death is truly bone chilling... yohohoho!
The thumbnail looks absolutely horrifying
Messing with a person's heart is simply unforgivable
This is so messed up for Brook for the main fact that that was literally his life for 50 years...just living alone on a ship with your friends corpses.
Brook : b*tch please, i've seen the hallucination of my dead friends for 50 years while strangled in the middle of dead sea, this means nothing
Brook has suffered enough to know it was too good to be true, but still took advantage of the moment since it’s the closest he’ll get to relive his time with his old crew.
You know you're dead when Brook's voice started to become cold and deep
Six months later when watching this, I realized, despite how he is, he never made a joke about losing his crew breaking his heart even though he has no heart. Even in the heat of the moment in other episodes, he will make jokes about missing body parts but not hear when he remembers his dead crew.
Is is just me or is 0:41 kinda creepy
It could be because brook is well, has no eyes so he looks literally dead
"I'm sad, I'm in pain, it breaks my heart."
for unserious cheerful Brook to say these words...
HE OBVIOUSLY DOESNT HAVE A HEART YOHOHOHO...

This just shows what despite being looked down upon in this regard, Brook is a strong swordsman. He is stronger than pre-timeskip Zoro, maybe even stronger than early post-ts Zoro in these days. Its not that Brook is weak swordsman, its just Zoro is pure monster.
