Thank you for the great tips. I would add that diesel is quite a bit less than gasoline in Portugal. Diesel car rentals are more expensive but might be worth it if you're doing significant mileage. Also, some credit cards don't charge the additional 2.5% foreign conversion charges that most do. In Canada, Rogers and Home Trust, along with a few others, offer such credit cards . Cheers and thanks again : )
You have to be very careful about diesel and gasoline in Portugal as the names are very similar, it's not the credit card that charges but the point of sale conversion, just have the charge made in your home currency. Thanks so much for watching and commenting have a great weekend.
Olá Tina and Norm. Love the Toyota. I drive a Mazda2, even in our snowy Ottawa winters... I love small cars. I used to drive a bit further away to buy my petrol at Intermarche. Definitely a lot less expensive... and I too got a kick out of the drive up laundry machines. Such an interesting concept. The house I rented for 3 months had a washing machine so the only time I used a laundromat (lavanderia) was when I washed all the sheets and towels the day before I left... I wanted them all nice and dry and the house only had a small washing machine... (which was fine by me!). Great tips, especially with the Multibancos. I felt the exact same as you. €200 max!! It was annoying because you pay more bank fees. I only bought stamps once in 3 months and I just went in to the teller, inside Obidos. Speaking of Obidos, are you planning on exploring outside the Algarve? I lived near Peniche, about 20 minutes from Óbidos (castelo) and I had a car 🚙, so drove down to the Algarve twice. Once in early December and once in early February (as a matter fact Facebook has reminded me I was there at this time of year). If you haven’t been up to Óbidos, I think you two would love it! It’s a wonderful walled town. My Portuguese teacher had group classes their weekly so I was at the castle every week and of course when I had friends and family visit I had to take them to Óbidos. Just want to say Obrigada too. Thoroughly enjoyed this one! 🤗
Hi Jen thanks for the lovely comment we won’t be getting to Obidos this time that’s quite the way from here. We are looking at a possible 3 month stay next year looking for a 2 bed app or house to rent. Glad you are enjoying our videos and have a great day 👍🍷🍺
Great info and tips, Norm & Tina. Sounds like a good rate for the car rental. The outside laundry was cool. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your time in Portugal. Cheers.
Good morning Tina and Norman You still have beautiful weather out there . You seem to be quite happy and in shape ...must be fun to drive that tiny car 🚗 along the coastline does it have A/C ? It would be funny to find laundry machine outside like that in Canada ...Lol! 😂...quite unusual! 😮. Very useful tips once again for people traveling to Portugal 🇵🇹 Another nice video well done my friends ! Hope all the best for the rest of your stay Vos amies Hélène et Serge 👩❤️👨
Thank you Serge, we are having a great time a few overcast days but the blue sky has come back today 20°C today feels warmer though, the car couldn't be much smaller, does have a/c we used that today and a back up camera!! Have a great weekend Serge, say hi to Helene!! 🚗👍😎
That toyota Aygo is super cute, great for both of you! I think it is another kind of travel experience driving around new cities. Wow that's pretty cool they have a laundry next to the groceries. My first time hearing about stamp machines, that's really cool and good you don't have to go over the counter to get them. Hope you guys had a wonderful holiday there at Algarve!
Thank you for watching and commenting, the Toyota has been fun to drive. We still send postcards to our Grandchildren so always on the lookout for stamps! Have a great week.
Well it is 2022 now and there are a few changes- everywhere 😂! Petrol is dearer. 👀! My husband thought we might try two months next Feb/March or March/April. I'd like to drive to Portugal- that's a holiday all on it's own. We will see - closer to the time what's the best option. About the cards- and buying stamps. Don't know if Canada has this site: I use a card site, add a pic or two I've taken on holiday and send it via the post. Used this in France in 2019. Worked like a charm. Stamps automatically 'embossed' on the envelope and payment online. Thing is, the postage is local ( Country of origin) so it appears to come from your own place of residence- and delivered in a flash. Such a wonderful service. And the pictures you send in lieu of a postcard- is of actual sights you've seen. Anyway, just thought I'd mention this new possibility. Bet you didn't expect this 'blast from your past video'. Happy days. 💖 👍 🇳🇿 🙋♀️ 🇳🇱 🤩
Thank you for the great content! We're going to stay on the outskirts of Albufeira for a month in Dec/Jan with our two year old so getting a lot out of your videos. Loads of practical tips that we haven't found anywhere else. You're an inspiration so keep filming!💪 And hope we bump into each other somewhere in Algarve this winter 😊 All the best
Sounds great! we hope you have a wonderful time and your two year old has fun on the beach 🏖 There is a little train 🚂 that runs around Albufeira maybe check it out someone will have fun 🤩 Have a great week Cheers 🍷🇵🇹🍺🇨🇦
Hi Again Norm and Tina. Great hints for future travellers . We have those outdoors laundry machines in Ireland also. Hope to get back to the Algarve by Oct/Nov but only if its totally safe to do so.Take care good people. 🍹🍺
It was a novelty for us to see the outdoor laundry as in Canada winter would freeze them, makes a lot of sense though and Ireland has them too great to learn new things. We hear Portugal 🇵🇹 is opening it’s border soon but we have doubts about being able to travel there in January or February. We hope you can travel there this Autumn, our borders remain closed at least until the middle of June. Stay safe and well 😎😎🍻
Good little video guys, first time viewing. we also refuse the conversion when removing money but we also have a PT bank account here. We live in Central Portugal and always too buy on the farm to visit that far south. We have not long started our TH-cam channel about life on our farm, look forward to watching some more of yours. obrigado e ate logo!
It’s great to “meet” you on TH-cam, thanks for watching our video. We have travelled to quite a few places in Portugal 🇵🇹 unfortunately it might be a long time before we can return. We will check out your channel.
Brilliant tips for future tourists who are planning to visit Portugal. I will be visiting Italy this year and I'm a little nervous about it. Thanks for sharing these awesome tips. God bless and keep safe!
The car is so cute, we could only get two carry on suitcases in the trunk!! We love driving it and parking is a breeze. Thanks for watching and commenting!
When you said Jumbo went away, I was shocked 😳 But, a little research into what happened to the Jumbo chain of stores informed me that Auchan and Jumbo are one-in-the-same. Whew! Obviously, we are huge fans of the Jumbo hypermarkets. Whenever we stayed in Carvoeiro or Vilamoura we always did a bit of a shop and gased up in either Lagoa or Portimão. Prices were great and it was super convenient. My secret guilty pleasure grocery store was the Apolónia Supermercados.
TFW yes great grocery stores , we also like Aldi they get some great stuff. We like Pingo Doce for the cheap meals and awesome Pizza 🍕 with wine🍷🍺Stay safe and keep well Cheers 🍷🙂🌺
Yes Jumbo was the store name! which belong to Auchan the Group(chain of supermarkets) since day one! a while ago they dropped the name Jumbo and now it's just called Auchan, but same store! The ATM Machines in Portugal have alot of other functionalities, you can do alot of things, you can pay your taxes, your bills, pay for fishing and hunting license, transports system, activate Via Verde for the highway etc..etc! Portugal may be small but gives a big punch!!Thank me later! 👍
PT is such a beautiful country. We watched this video twice, it's so inspirational and triggers travel dreams in us. Thanks so much for sharing. - ✨ *Your Awesome Friends at The S'witty Kiwi Show* 💝
Great tips my friends to help others save money. That is a crazy small toyota first time I seen one like that . Great share my friends have a fun time big like 42 as always wishing you both a wonderful weekend. 👍😎 That is neat little Aygo . Wow so strange only 200 euros a day hard on tourist shopping but great for locals I guess.
Thank you for the tips. Question : The maximum number of days for car insurance covered by a credit card is usually 30 days. If you want to extend the coverage beyond that period, you might need to have a few days without a car and then rent again to continue the coverage?
Did you notice Problems with bathrooms in Portugal? For example not too many beachside public bathrooms or maybe smelly hotel sewage smells coming from toilet or drains?
We actually haven’t used many public toilets , if we are out for lunch we use the cafe or restaurant that we are eating in , the places we stay in are very modern no problems Cheers 🍷🇵🇹🇨🇦🍺
Hi folks love your videos, A few questions. Did you rent car before landing in Lisbon? Is there place that lists all the lodging rentals? Are you able to convert phone? 1st time visitors to Portugal make lots of mistakes but you 2 are crossing off the screw ups that will help. THANKS
Thank you, we rent a car from the same agency each time in the Algarve, so we fly into Faro Airport and pick the car up there. We look at Booking.com, AirBnB, VRBO and Expedia for rentals, a lot of hotels in The Algarve are apartment hotels either studios or one bedroom. In Albufeira shopping mall there was a temporary booth selling SIM cards quite cheaply for data and calls. Hope you have a great time, it’s easier than you think.
It's still the same store but we thought it was fun to say Jumbo had run away lol We used to get Linda McCartney vegan products from Jumbo, now Auchan is discontinuing this line.
It's similar in the.uk as far getting money out of the cash machine ATM when depending on what kind of account.you have you can.only get out £200 or £300 a time
We were told by locals in Portugal that the limit on ATM withdrawals was to prevent people being forced to take out money against their will as in coercion or criminal activity. Interesting to know the limits in the UK is similar.
Hey Tina and Norm!!! That's so awesome you got a rental car for only 12 Euros a day.. that sounds like an amazing deal! We always rent cars when we travel as well.. Through Costco.. They have good deals! That's too cool, they have a laundrymat in the grocery store parking lot. What a novel idea! That's interesting you can only get 200 Euros from the ATM at a time. But makes sense for bank fraud!! That's great they have stamp machine to make sending postcards easier! That was funny when Norm said "You need lots of money if you are married to Tina" LOLOL!! Glad to know Norm is the money bags between the two of you!! LOL Great video and lots of love to you both.. have a great day!
Good Morning Bears & Butters from a very sunny blue sky Portugal 🇵🇹Thanks for stopping by and leaving a great comment. We have seen Costco has rental car deals but never used them we should check them out for next time. We are always looking for that little joke in our videos put some fun into our movies, it doesn't always work!! The laundry machines outside grocery stores is a great take on a laundromat, put the machines where the people are. Have a wonderful Sunday. ☀️😎😎
Unusual for find a good car rental abroad and at 12 euros a day, that is good value, so good to find one. An ideal car for getting around and to be honest, for the two of you, all you want. 400 euros a day would do me to be honest and I think, regarding fraud, it is maybe a good idea. Good to hear a few tips from people in the know, cheers Alan
I got stung by that maximum withdrawal limit on an ATM in Lisbon when I had to pay over 300 euros for a flute service. It didn't occur to me to try again immediately afterwards.
What a bargain nice toyota all laundry should be outdoors ,the air in laundromats is terrible great idea thanks for the great tips have a super weekend
It's the only way to make the most of a location, we are lucky we found a car rental rep that looks after us here in Portugal, thanks for watching have a great weekend Kiran!
Wow at $12.00 a day that little vehicle is a beauty. I agree with fact that you can go where you please. I go with Freedom. Yes always check with your credit card companies as some do insurances. Great tips Norm and Tina. Yes Laundry is important too. Yep monies and stamps are important too, but who sends postcards these days 😂
Hi Peter and JoJo we are enjoying the 🚘 car it’s great fun, actually we send postcards to our Grandkids from everywhere we travel 🧳 to and they love getting them . We also get them snow globes and they have a great collection now. Have a fantastic weekend Cheers from Norm and Tina 👍🍷🍺
Hello Norm & Tina, what is your car rental agency name? And it is at the Faro airport? I understand the parking situation is challenging in Lisbon, is it better in Faro? I am visiting in November and hope the temperature is mild. Seems like it could rain a bit 😬
We aren’t recommending any car places Monica due to Covid prices have shot up and cars harder to get , there are many based at the airport just Google them good luck 😎🚗
Isn’t it great to learn new things , the first time we saw outdoor laundry we couldn’t believe it but thought what a great idea 💡.TFW have a great week 👍🍷🍺
Thank you for the tips. Would you be willing to give the name of the car rental company at Faro airport that you have had good experience with? Thanks in advance.
Great video! From which provider did you rent your car? Is it possible to get it in Lisbon and leave it in Lagos/Faro (different location from pick-up spot)? Take care guys and thanks for the tips!
Can’t remember the exact name they are in the Algarve, not sure 🤔 if you rent then drop off at different location. You could get the train 🚆 then rent in Faro 🧐Cheers 🇵🇹 🍷🇨🇦🍺
I found this a wonderful content video. Do you plan on exploring other parts of the country? Also have you found other people to socialize with? Best wishes.
Good Morning, in the past we have been to Porto, Lisbon & Cascais on this trip we are just in The Algarve. We have found this hotel in the first two weeks to have very few guests.
Hello, do you mind to tell where you get the car hire ? What is the car rental company’s name ? We are going to Lagos in 2 weeks, hired a car with Avis, but there are many negative reviews about them. And the car we hired is an electric as I don’t know how to drive a manual car. Obviously in Europe it is very common to drive manual cars, but not in the U.S. would appreciate your input. Thanks ☺️
Sorry we havent rented a car since 2020 and can’t recommend anyone, if you don’t fancy electric you can get automatic but will cost more good luck🍷 🇵🇹 🙂🍻
At 7:12 you mention about the currency conversation “from this office ?” , I don’t quite understand what are you talking about, We are from US and plan to visit Algarve after the pandemic is gone.
What I was saying is about point of sale purchases, either using a credit card or debit card (bank cash card), these are the credit card pin pads or Bank ATM’s. If your credit / debit card is from outside the European Union, these terminals on the lcd screen will offer to do the currency conversion for you, meaning you are buying something for 50 euros, they will bill your credit in converted U.S. dollars or whatever your home currency is, but the conversion rate they use is worse than your home bank because they give you a less competitive exchange rate and add a small fee. So we always refuse that option and press the option to bill our credit / bank card in euros and we let our home bank / credit card provider do the exchange rate in our home country for a better rate. Hope this clears up the point.
Well done, Canadians, but what about the best benefits of all i.e. the good weather and cheap cost of living. Boohoo, a negative are the toll charges in the Algarve.
just wondering the name of the car rental place that you get your car from ? We re visiting the Algarve in April. Thank you for all of your wonderful videos.
@@ThisIsOurRetirement Thank you fellow Canadians ! .We will be flying in to Faro and staying for a week in Albufeira and planning a road trip for our remaining week. All of your tips have really helped as this is our first trip to Europe so much appreciated.
My wife and I are going to Albuferia next Jan - Feb we are from Edmonton. I've been checking car rental rates and they don't compare to the rate you got. Who do you rent your car from and how do we contact him so that we can get that rate?
Things have changed so much with Covid , that we don’t feel happy recommending anyone cars are harder to get and prices have gone through the roof 😱 we hope you understand have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🍷🇨🇦🇵🇹🌻🍺
Love your videos. We r also retired travellers who live in Calgary. We have two questions for you. Would you again stay at the Luna Solaqua? Can you provide the contact information for the car rental company please? Cheers
It’s expensive for what it is but a safe good choice for a first time visit. We are cautious about recommending any agency in case you have a bad experience. We are looking forward to future international travel one day.
No not really, you should get an International Driving Permit the CAA issues them, it is the law in Portugal but we hear of many who don't bother. Brush up on your roundabout (traffic circle) technique there are many at virtually every intersection. 🚗Thanks for watching we appreciate it.
That is interesting about the international drivers licence. I’ll bet not many have thought of that. Oh yeah, plenty of round abouts! That must be challenging to a North American driver! Myself, I unfortunately don’t drive anymore due to now being legally blind, but I still do hold a drivers licence! The authorities just haven’t taken it away so I get driven everywhere. So I can just picture my wife negotiating the roads in a completely foreign land 🤪. Most of my outdoor videos and photos are taken by point, shoot and hope for the best! I can’t see that digital camera or phone screen at all in the light of day. Indoors I can manage that a little better. 👍
So itty bitty! 😀 12 Euros sounds pretty cheap. 👍 Lego my Eggo. (Aygo) 😂 Food thing they don't have a homeless issue, that laundry situation wouldn't work in Los Angeles (when I lived there long ago).
The laundry thing wouldn't work at home in Canada either....would be frozen with burst pipes, The car is a great deal and so small it's fun!! Especially as it's a manual stick shift. Thanks so much for watching!
It is a very straight forward route on the toll road from memory we are thinking it might be around 25 Euros 💶 but it gets you there quick thanks for watching have a great week Cheers 🍷🇵🇹🇨🇦🍺
@@ThisIsOurRetirement Thank again for your insight. We have been enjoying your posts and like others who comment we have learned a lot about what to expect in Portugal. Keep up the great videos 🕶

@@ThisIsOurRetirement Have a great weekend also!
Happy Weeknd my dear couple 🤓😁💕👍🍻
Happy weekend edu, great to hear from you! 😎😎👍💕
Hi folks love your videos,
A few questions.
Fascinating facts ...thanks..
Hi Terry hope our facts help people when they visit , TFW hope you are enjoying a great weekend Cheers Norm and Tina 👍🍺
I used to like Jumbo! There was one in Cascais that is now called Auchan.
Love it 😍
Thank you
You're welcome 😊
Unusual for find a good car rental abroad and at 12 euros a day, that is good value, so good to find one. An ideal car for getting around and to be honest, for the two of you, all you want. 400 euros a day would do me to be honest and I think, regarding fraud, it is maybe a good idea. Good to hear a few tips from people in the know, cheers Alan
Hi Alan TFW the 🚘 car is perfect for the two of us have a great week 👍🍷🍺
I got stung by that maximum withdrawal limit on an ATM in Lisbon when I had to pay over 300 euros for a flute service. It didn't occur to me to try again immediately afterwards.
It also happened to us last year so we thought it was a good point to warn people.
Very interesting and useful my dear, dear friends! Always a joy following you! Nice weekend and a big embrace from me. Renata
Good Morning Renata, thank you for watching, we are having fun here in Portugal 🇵🇹We hope you have a great weekend!
@@ThisIsOurRetirement Thanks so much my dear friends! See you!
Yes, rented car helps to explore the region and save on transfer from airport. Best regards.
TFW we are really enjoying the freedom we get with the car 🚘 able to go where we want especially on sunny days😎👍🍷
Very convenient,do laundry and shopping at the same time
TFW it’s it a great idea enjoy your day 👍😎
What a bargain nice toyota all laundry should be outdoors ,the air in laundromats is terrible great idea thanks for the great tips have a super weekend
Yes you are correct the fumes can be strong have a great weekend.👍🍷
You should play some golf in Quinta do Lago, nothing tops that in the algarve.
Thanks we have heard that the golf 🏌️courses are wonderful have a great weekend Cheers 👍🍷🍺
Cute car. That’s what we do mostly rent a car and enjoy the freedom, convenience and privacy
This Is Our Retirement Yes now u understand how much your grand children would appreciate the post cards.
Sporty Seats? Let go of my Aygo ahhhahaha . Outdoor laundry? Wow I learn something new everyday
There have been so many changes due to Covid with huge price increases and shortages we aren’t comfortable recommending anyone Allan Cheers ☕️🇵🇹🇨🇦
What is the withdrawal fee per transaction the ATMs are charging for non- Portuguese cards?
We are not sure.
Some handy tips there! 👍👍👍
Hi Anthony TFW we hope it might make it easier for folk visiting Portugal for the first time. Enjoy your weekend 👍🍷🍺
Fantastic tips !!
TFW glad you liked the tips we hope they might help new visitors to Portugal 🇵🇹 👍🍷🌺
Interesting tips for the travelers
TFW have a great weekend Cheers 🍺
Very nice sharing
Thank you for watching have a great day 👍🍺😎
Hi
Thanks You, all clear now, hope see you after the pandemic.
@@DatNguyen-gi8pi Yes we will be back when it’s all safe to do so , enjoy your weekend Cheers 🍷🍺🇺🇸🇨🇦🇵🇹

Thank you for sharing this tips. Your new friend here. Left you a gift 👉🔔☺️
TFW and welcome to our channel have a great week 👍🌺
Ha ha! I vlogged in that very post office!! Hee hee hee! I usually buy stamps from shops that sell post cards.
We do buy at postcard shops but increasingly they are selling books of stamps, we only ever need three, so cool we have both vlogged from there!
Well done, Canadians, but what about the best benefits of all i.e. the good weather and cheap cost of living. Boohoo, a negative are the toll charges in the Algarve.
Good point! it’s a shame about the tolls but we do love those blue skies and lovely beaches Cheers 🍷🍺🙂
just wondering the name of the car rental place that you get your car from ? We re visiting the Algarve in April.
Thank you for all of your wonderful videos.
It was Auto Algarve and we pick the car up at the airport no complaints, enjoy your stay here 👍🍷😎Thanks for watching our videos 👍
@@ThisIsOurRetirement Thank you fellow Canadians ! .We will be flying in to Faro and staying for a week in Albufeira and
planning a road trip for our remaining week. All of your tips have really helped as this is our first trip to Europe so much appreciated.
Hi
Did you prerent car at home? Is there a place to check out lodging rentals for each town?
We do pre rent a car at home, just so we can get from the airport to our destination.
😎 the more tips the better.
Thank you 😎😎
we prefer small car as well to rent whenever we go for travel
TFW the other thing is a smaller car takes less ⛽️ gas have a great day 👍🍷🍺
Jumbo is the same company Auchan , the change of name is due the have their products named as Auchan
That’s right but the Jumbo name was a bit of fun! Thanks for watching.
Nice tiny car for a lovely couple 👍😊
TFW the car is a lot of fun and easy to park enjoy your weekend Cheers 🍷🍺👍
Love your videos. We r also retired travellers who live in Calgary. We have two questions for you.
Would you again stay at the Luna Solaqua? Can you provide the contact information for the car rental company please?
Cheers
It’s expensive for what it is but a safe good choice for a first time visit. We are cautious about recommending any agency in case you have a bad experience. We are looking forward to future international travel one day.
You guys are great 👏👏👏
Very informative video. Who did you rent the car from?
We rented from Auto Algarve , stay safe and keep well Cheers 🍷🙂
@@ThisIsOurRetirement I cannot seem to find this rental company. Would you please share their website?
@@ernestopolimenineto900 We aren’t sure if they are still in business sorry 🌺

TFW we do love visiting but love Canada 🇨🇦 too Cheers 👍🍷
Im.lovimg thatvlittle car its really nice
It is a cute little car easy to park and fun to drive.
Those washing machines look handy.
Yes they are quite common here, we used the ones at the Albufeira Shopping Centre a few days ago and pretty cheap. That's why we travel with carry on.
Could you please tell me the name of the car rental? Thanks 😊
We don’t endorse any car rental company Ana have a nice weekend Cheers 🌺🙂🍷
Enjoy your appreciation😍lk♥️
Thank you! 💕❤️🌷👍
May I ask where can I find a rental car in Portugal for 12 euro a day? Planning to drive from Lisbon to Algarve when I go to Portugal?
The car rental agency is in The Algarve and you need to rent it for a month to get €12 a day.
Interesting video. That is a cheap car rental, about 18 Cdn $’s. Any issues driving in the Algarve?
What company exactly or person U use to rent the car ?
Sorry we aren’t recommending any after the pandemic due to increased costs and harder to find cars 🚗🍷🙂
Wow that is nothing for car rental, great set of tips and advice.
Yes we think it’s a great deal TFW hope you had a great weekend 🍷🍺👍
@@ThisIsOurRetirement We had a great weekend thank you, apart from th -4C temperature LOL
Hello…We will pick up a rental car at Lisbon airport and drive to Lagos area and are wondering about tolls. Do you have any advise?
It is a very straight forward route on the toll road from memory we are thinking it might be around 25 Euros 💶 but it gets you there quick thanks for watching have a great week Cheers 🍷🇵🇹🇨🇦🍺
Thanks for the quick response….just wondering if we should rent transponder for tolls on the A2 or are credit card payments accepted?

No we don’t tip anyone other than room maid
@@ThisIsOurRetirement thank! What is a range for that tip?
@@robinwild1 One or two Euro’s a few times a week.
What about road tolls, I had a hell of a problem with this
Our car rental agency takes care of it, the car comes with a transponder at no extra cost and we leave a credit card for any tolls
