Kind of the same thing in reverse. A company I worked for in the 90's hired around 15 people newly arrived from Russia. They were sponsored by a church that helped them with living arrangements and we gave them jobs. About a year later, only one person was still with us. A woman who had been a doctor and now was a "change lady" explained that it was very difficult to adjust. Whereas before they were told where they were going to work, when they were going to work and for how much. Now they had to compete for jobs, shifts, days off, etc. Essentially they had to promote themselves and their qualifications and they just didn't know how to do that. I asked her why she had made it. She said that she knew she would never be able to be a doctor in the U.S. but was reasonably satisfied and made a reasonably good living. She made the best out of it. It was very interesting.
I think it is not that the oppressed classes overthrew the oppressing classes in history. The oppressed classes were too weak to do that. It is actually the oppressing classes evolved, spreading with new opportunities, finally splitting. For the winner within the oppressing class, they had to win the oppressed classes first, and to leverage their power to defeat it's opponent. The reason the capitalism does not end is because the oppressing class did not spread wide enough yet to split...
How is it forced altruism? Each individual provides one service, in return we all get a large and diverse society. It's just an extension of a small village or family where one person hunts, one person gathers, etc
Just so everyone is clear, we don’t work to pay “taxes”, rather we work to earn the government’s currency in order to pay off the tax liability that our government has imposed on us. Therefore government has to spend that currency into the economy first, before any tax payment or bond purchase can be made. Also, the government can spend unlimited amounts of its currency... simple stuff
Video point 09:00. Wait a minute. I think the assumption that all reason in anthropocentric is wrong. I believe that often reason is used to understand the universe for the simple joy of knowing; with no selfish desire to control. This can be illustrated in the book “The Pleasure of Finding Things Out” by Richard P. Feynman. This incorrect assumption that humans view and interpret everything in terms of their own benefit is cynical and leads the philosopher to deduce mankind as an exploiter and therefor he needs to be changed. This mistake could explain why the supposed “exploited” do not rise up against he “exploiter” because in reality there is no exploitation going on. In reality there is a free and voluntary trade of work for money that goes on only as long a both parties are willing. It also leads to the assumption that all relationships are hierarchical, as in a wife is always subservient to her husband therefor concluding that all marriage needs to be abolished. I believe that people seek knowledge for more than their own benefit and the example of reading the phone book is a false analogy. You can say that we don’t read it because we cannot exploit it but I counter that we don’t read it simply because it is not engaging or exciting. Based on the breakdown of the assumption the arguments that follow are also flawed.
Marcuse's wrong. Here's why...We are all workers and consumers under any system. We are slaves to life itself. And, to live we must work and consume. Humans are organisms. Complex ones, but organisms all the same.
In communism everyone would also have to work, the problem is that in capitalism, you have a hierarchical structure that makes it so a boss gains profit off of your hard work
it is not the same the basic consumption, for survival and cultural purpouses, than consumism just for the sake of ostentation. THAT type of consumption (the second) is the one that needs to be eliminated. We need to learn to stand out from the crowd via science, art, sports, and not by the shinny pile of coins that we have in the bank.
I would ask Marcuse which chains we could break to stop us from dying, or from needing food to live or air to breathe...Are these things we have been "conditioned" into as well? Isn't he just advocating for conditioning of another type?
These may seem nonsensical, but they are valid questions because his world view hinges on being a slave to certain things. In life there are lots of things we cannot change physically, biologically, etc. These are not insidious conspiracies to keep us enslaved, they are biproducts of our evolution to this point in our development. As we grow and develop as a species things change. We are just not long-lived enough to care about it on a lengthy timeline, of say 10k years or something.
He argues against the the systems that have freed us from often not having those bare essentials or not having enough of them around the world at this point although at the time it might have just been the first and second world + Switzerland that were prospering.
In the first chapter of his book, Marcuse differentiates between true and false needs. True needs are what our body needs. False needs are apart of the conditioning
Well i doubt that being pesant in middle-ages wass so bad. I mean, world wass simple: you plug land, you give 1/10 of to your land master. You plug your wife, have 10 baby's, same helping you with land plugging, same go to war, same to monestary. Earth wass flat and no one give a shit about that is not. Life wass simple then. People have same sort connection to their land to their environment and therefore to their job. Then there wass no question of meaning of life. And now...

for the longest time, i wouldn't reconcile the conflict between science and myth while reading the frankfurt school.. you solved my dilemma. thanks
Brilliant episode. I’m your newest biggest fan!!! Thx
hey thanks for this you do a great job sir!
Very true ... we seem to be profiled by our jobs and our consumption of "things." To be deprogrammed is difficult but not impossible.
Thank you for this timely episode.

Damn. You said the same thing, but better.
At no point does he srgue that we need to free ourselves from the bare neccessities of biological survival.

Oddly, Trump didn't have to spend as much money on advertising because he exploited the media's clickbait nature for free attention.
